Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ Gwen sighed in a restless manner as she strode in the courtyard of the palace, taking in the afternoon sun as she picked some flowers to place in the bedchambers. She was feeling particularly restless today, her usual routine not doing much to sooth her internal debate. It was the same one that had been plaguing her mind for the past few weeks and she was no nearer to finding the answer then when the debate begun. Gwen knew that her and Arthur couldn’t be together, he was a prince whilst she, was a mere servant. It would be frowned upon by others, Arthur’s father especially. But it didn’t make the feelings go away, if anything it made them intensify. As one could say, the one thing you cannot have is usually the one thing you want most. Either way, she had no idea what to do or how to stop the feelings from fluttering up.
Maybe that had been why Gwen had been avoiding the Prince. It was probably obvious to anyone paying attention to her movements that she wandered out the room every time he entered, or well stared for a second longer than appropriate before flushing and muttering apologies before making up some task she needed to do. It was the only course of action she could do, at least until someone invented some kind of way of turning off a feeling. Until then, Gwen had to just stay out of his line of sight and not hear his wonderful, charming voice. Oh no, she was thinking about him again! She cursed this as she knelt down to place the lavender into the basket and smiled to herself at how pretty it looked.
It would be considered a tad ironic from an outsider that the one thing she was thinking about constantly, the task she was doing constantly, was the one thing she had failed miserably about. She was thinking so much on new ways to avoid Arthur that she probably left herself wide open to the fact that she was currently in the courtyard of the castle he lived in. Maybe if she’d thought about that he probably wouldn’t have seen her clipping the lavender.
Gwen was blissfully arranging the lavender in the woven basket when she heard footsteps coming closer. Far too close to be someone not approaching her. Gwen turned around with a flush,

Arthur Pendragon's mind was constantly finding it difficult to focus on one thing. He was always distracted with fleeting thoughts about . . . well, it was always focused on one thing. Or one person he should say. The hardest part of this entire complicated situation was that he had to pretend like it was nothing, in front of other people anyway. He could not let his father know, nor anyone else . . . and that made it worse. It made it seem that he was embarrassed over the fact that he had fallen in love with a servant . . . which could be nothing further than the truth. But his actions of keeping this hidden contradicting these beliefs. Besides, Arthur could not discuss such things with anyone . . . not even Merlin who was the only one who knew -- as far as Arthur was aware of -- .
He decided that perhaps some fresh air would do him some good, as his father had no tasks for him at the moment, and Merlin was busy with his own list of chores. As Arthur stepped foot in the garden, he suddenly stopped, as he saw her . . . the same woman who had constantly been on his mind: Guinevère. He did not say anything, nor did he make an attempt to move further towards her. He stood there, watching her, well, technically it could be considered spying but Arthur did not care at this moment. He had not seen her for what felt like ages . . . then again, even if he had seen her, he was not sure what he would say to her. He knew that he was not being fair and that if he had any decency, he would just distance himself completely. But he couldn't . . . it was something far easier said than done.
He watched her pick flowers. This image truly was the epitome of perfection. For a brief moment, all the complications, all the problems that surrounded them, seemed to vanish and all he could do was watch Gwen pick each flower. And then . . . the moment ended, for Arthur quickly snapped back into reality. If someone came by and saw him staring like a fool at her . . . or if he was caught by her . . . it would just make things all the more awkward. Awkward. Yes. Their interactions seemed to be just that lately. But it was not incentive enough for him to walk away . . . he had to talk to her, though he was unsure what to say.
He started walking towards her, getting closer, but maintained a distance between them. "Guinevère," he greeted, trying to sound as causal as he could . . . but it was nearly impossible. He stood in front of her, still trying to limit any sort of discomfort though he felt his heart beat slightly faster. "What are you doing?" . . . . . . Arthur had to restrain himself from making a face at his own question. What a stupid question indeed! It was obvious what she was doing, but what else was he to say? What else could he say? . . . Well, there was quite a bit, but surely there had to be some sort of limitations . . . then again, Arthur had never quite been in a situation like this before. He maintained his composure . . . or what was left of it anyway.

Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ Gwen could quite safely say that avoiding Arthur would probably be impossible in this moment without looking either rude or well, un-servant like. She picked up the basket and stood up with a small cough as he said her name. “My lord.” Gwen said with a quick curtsey as she blushed gazing down at the lavender to avoid meeting Arthur’s gaze. Gwen didn’t do awkward well, how could anyone? This was just made more awkward by the fact Arthur looked really good today. Gwen flushed heavier at the realization she probably shouldn’t think those sorts of things about a prince.
Gwen gazed upwards at Arthur’s question and resisted a small smile. “I was just picking flowers for the arrangements in the castle.” Gwen said in a formal manner due to the fact that if she acted to casual around him, it could be considered disrespectful. Gwen brushed the front of her dress self-consciously worried that maybe some of the dirt from the garden may have stained it. Nothing worst then walking around unaware you have a giant brown stain on your good dress. “I thought I should do so seeing as the weather is so pleasant.” Gwen said before mentally kicking herself. Talking about the weather? Really? She wished she could just bolt for it at this stage, she was so embarrassed.
The last time the pair had spoken this much had been when he and Merlin had come to rescue her. Of course that had been one of the most weirdest situations in her life and she’d felt suddenly torn between Lancelot and Arthur. She had never felt that torn between two people, why? She was saddened by Lancelot’s sudden departure and hadn’t seen the man since, which was more than she could say for her encounters with Arthur. Though the pair didn’t tend to speak when they ran into each other, there were usually muttered apologies and blushes, mostly from Gwen’s end. So why was he talking to her now? Not that she didn’t like him talking to her, she just had no idea what to say to him.

Arthur hated seeing her courtsey in front of him. He knew that it was something she had been taught to do . . . it was something everyone in the kingdom had to do . . . but it was also a painful reminder to Arthur. It was something that emphasized their differences, when he wished there was nothing standing in their way. Even hearing her say My Lord . . . no. It could not always be like this. Things would change . . . they would have to. It was not entirely unrealistic, was it? The more he looked at her, the more beauty he saw. He was practically memorizing every feature on her face, as he felt he had not been able to rest his eyes on her for quite some time . . . and while he shouldn't, he could not help it.
He knew he had to say something to break the silence, and so stopped his intently focused gaze on her by looking at the flowers in her basket. "It is indeed lovely weather for picking flowers." Damn it Arthur! Think of something more productive to say!. Why was this so awkward? Why did he constantly have to monitor what he said instead of being able to speak freely and without hesitation. "How have you been?" He was asking about her well being, and while he was always concerned about her . . . it seemed like such a generic question, not one that he really wanted to be asking her, for he did not want to feel like he was talking with a complete stranger, though that is what their circumstances seemed to force them in to.
"I apologize, but I'm not disturbing you am I?" He quickly asked, wondering if she preferred to select her flowers in his absence. Probably she would have . . . but Arthur was not sure he could leave her company just yet. They were alone, something that was very rare . . . something that he should not be encouraging . . . and yet something he always longed for.

Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ “Well I’m glad we see eye to eye on that subject.” Gwen said with a small sense of odd pride at the fact they were holding a mildly normal if not awkward conversation. It was better than nothing one could argue. Gwen just hoped it would get easier to talk without flushing so much, Gwen never use to flush. Now it seemed to happen all the time. It was a nuisance indeed. One which she would dearly wish to get rid of.
“I have been well, life as usual pretty much, how about you?” Gwen asked trying to keep the conversation from hitting a lull, which would in turn make this encounter even more awkward. Gwen tried to remember what things were like before the....kiss....but now everything before it seemed, insignificant of such. She couldn’t even remember what had her thoughts so entirely before now. But she did know what had them now. And he was standing closer than he had in a while.
Oh no of course not, my lord, I was merely finishing up and trying to decide where to start placing them.” Gwen explained hastily as not to bring off the wrong impression. She really did enjoy Arthur’s company, now she knew the true side of him. Gwen knew he would be a good king one day, still it couldn’t help but wound a bit to think of the dashing queen who would sit aside him. She would be far perfect than Gwen would ever be. I was a thought that Gwen couldn’t bare to think for too long.

Arthur was very relieved that she was doing well. She indeed a brave woman . . . after going through everything she had, and yet still being able to smile over simple things like the beauty of a flower. It made him love her even more. "I am very relieved to hear that Guinevère," he replied very genuinely, in regards to her answer to his question. "Especially after everything you went through with what Hengist did to you." If the man had not been dead, Arthur surely would have killed him. "I can not even imagine how difficult that must have been for you."
She had done nothing to be captured and held captive in such grim circumstances . . . and no doubt fearful for her life. Arthur hated thinking about her being anything but happy . . . not to mention thinking back to that situation reminded him of another man, apart from Hengist. "I too am well, thank you." Though his primary concern was not himself. He was much better now that she was safe and back in Camelot . . . but of course, to say these things may be crossing some boundaries . . . though he knew he had already crossed a few too many.
And yet again, Arthur was relieved to hear that he was not disturbing her. Of course, perhaps she would have been too polite to say otherwise, but Arthur would not turn down the opportunity to spend a few moments with her, even just a few seconds. "They will surely light up whatever room you plan to put them in," he told her, still, not really paying any attention to the flowers, but rather, the woman that was picking them.

She hadn’t been sure anyone would even attempt to help her, except of course Lancelot. “But I’m just trying to put all that behind me now, my father use to say that it was unhealthy to dread on the past.” Gwen said, realizing that the statement could be taken with a double meaning, especially concerning the events that happened on the trip back to Camelot. She knew of course trying to withdraw the words would just make the possible double meaning a whole lot worse and make this conversation far more uncomfortable. It was true though, she had been trying to put what happened behind her, trying to push both Lancelot and Arthur out of her mind. Her attempts though had been unsuccessful. “I’m glad to hear that.” Gwen replied as Arthur said he was well. Again, this statement was honest, she wouldn’t know what to do if harm was to become Arthur.
“That is pleasing to hear, seeing as by the looks of how many there are, they may be appearing through out the castle.” Gwen said blushing slightly as she noticed him gazing at her. She was like a little child, the kind that would go red whenever they noticed a certain someone even blinking their way. And the problem was, Gwen kind of liked it that way. Only a bit, the rest of the time, it was a right pain in the behind.

Arthur could not help but think of Lancelot . . . and how he had gotten there to help her before him . . . and how she cried for him when he was gone . . . and just every other thing that seemed to raise insecurities. "Of course Guinevère. We would never have let any harm come to you." He was speaking collectively, meaning him and Merlin of course, though he really wanted to say that he himself would ensure no harm would come to her. He had lied though, that night, by saying that the only reason he had come was for Morgana's sake . . . and while he was fairly certain that Gwen knew that was not true, there was no point going back on his words now.
Was she dreading on the past? How much did she want to leave in the past? Arthur could not ask all these questions, so had to resort to menial conversation. "Wise words," he agreed, unsure as what else to say regarding that. "And I understand. I apologize if my words have brought up a past that you wish to securely bury as a distant memory." This was ridiculous. Arthur never felt so flustered and so much at a loss for words. Surely . . . it is not that difficult to maintain a conversation. And he had to as well, since he had been the one to approach her in the first place.
"I hope they do, as they will most definitely add some color to the dull walls." Were they still talking about flowers?! "You certainly do keep yourself busy," he began. He was saying it in such a way to see if she really had been avoiding him, and that was why he had not seen her more often. Or perhaps he was being paranoid and she really was busy with her chores and various tasks. It was odd, how he had never really noticed her in a crowd before . . . and now, every crowd he saw, his eyes were always searching for her. "It is very dutiful of you, to be so meticulous in your tasks . . . I just hope you are not working too hard?"
And yet again, he was still trying to find out the reason he had not seen her. . . because he was curious. But almost as quickly as he said the words, he instantly regretted them. He did not like pointing out that she was a servant. He did not like focusing on their class differences . . . and so, he felt as if he should say something to redeem himself, then again, he would probably only make it worse. Next time, he should just bloody well think before he speaks. And then again . . . maybe she would not be offended or care, and once again, he was just acting like a paranoid fool.

Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ “That is definitely comforting to hear.” Gwen said with a small blush, the words warming her heart. She knew that he meant both him and Merlin, even Morgana, but still the most she got from that was that he would protect her. That was the most comforting thought overall for Gwen. She gazed up at Arthur with a smile as she fingered the bud of one of the lavenders stems in an absent manner.
“Oh no, by not dwelling on the past, it also means to be able to move on one should be able to speak of it, which we are. It’s actually helping.” Gwen defended, stuttering slightly. Gwen didn’t think that Arthur should apologize for anything. He hadn’t done anything wrong by her, he had just done what was right for everyone.
Gwen picked up the underline wording in what Arthur spoke. He knew she’d been avoiding him, she coughed slightly as she thought of a suitable response. “Keeping busy, well it, keeps my mind of things.” She responded, one passing by wouldn’t read anything into that comment whilst Arthur would probably understand what she meant. Keeping busy, kept her mind off of him. Maybe he would, maybe he wouldn’t notice.
Gwen nodded at Arthur’s next words, unable to find a response to them. “I try not to, but for Morgana, I do not consider it work.” Gwen said honestly. She considered Morgana more as a sister and best friend than someone she served under. That was probably frowned upon by anyone that found out but she did not care. It didn’t make her slack on her job, it made her work harder.

"Well then I'm glad it provides comfort to you, and puts your mind at ease." Arthur needed to think of something better to talk about . . . not that he did not place priority on his comfort. It was just such a strange conversation. He said one thing when he really wanted to say another, and meant one thing when on the surface, it wasn't quite as deep as he wanted it to be. It was troubling him, and yet . . . he did not have the strength to walk away before he makes things any more uncomfortable for her. Though she was smiling . . . a beautiful smile indeed, and it made Arthur feel that in this moment, just for that one expression, made every step towards her worth it.
"Is it helping? I'm relieved to hear that. Anything that helps distract your mind. But if you need to talk or . . . if you need anything, anything at all, do not hesitate to ask." He said said very similar words to her before, when her father passed away -- or rather, was killed by orders carried out by Uther -- but now, there was a different sentiment behind his words. They were as sincere as they had been before, but it could not be denied that their relationship had substantially changed since the last time he said these words, and so he wondered if now . . . she would be more likely or less likely to take him up on his offer.
Mind off of things? Unfortunately for Gwen, Arthur was reading into every word, and his over analytical mind was presenting different meanings as to what she really meant. Was he perhaps placing too much emphasis on himself and overestimating how much she thought about what happened between them? Perhaps he was. Should he ask? Would that make him seem rude and inconsiderate? "I hope it is nothing too serious?" Not a very considerate comment to make, but he did not want to ask specific questions, just in case that would get offended and reluctant to answer. Instead, he resorted to short little comments that had secluded purposes to them.
What a nice thing to say about her job! Of course, that did not surprise Arthur. She was indeed a very genuine, optimistic person who seldom complained. Why did she have to be so perfect? "I am happy to hear that; that your work is not tiring you too much." Arthur knew that Merlin probably didn't feel the same way. He tended to dump a bunch of things on him, and never once stop to ask if it was too much. "And that it is not too much of a burden to you." He added, rather uselessly.

Once upon a time I was falling in love But now I'm only falling apart ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾ Gwen couldn’t help but flush a slight bit when Arthur asked if it was anything serious on her mind. She couldn’t out right say it was him, that might either freak out any passing person or make this conversation even more awkward. “Nothing you should worry about.” Gwen said before mentally slapping herself again. “Not that you should be worrying, I mean it’s my thoughts. It doesn’t affect me too much. Well not all the time anyway...Just most of the time....” Gwen didn’t blabber. So why was she doing so now? She felt like a complete fool. Gwen ducked her head to hide the increasing blush that spread on her cheeks.
Gwen tried to figure what to say next as she heard what Arthur said and her blush only intensified. This was why she’d been avoiding him. She couldn’t even share one conversation with him without this. It was embarrassing. She stumbled for her next words before managing, “So what brings you out here, my lord?” Gwen asked sighing in slight content that the question didn’t sound to silly. She could have done worse. Gwen finally managed to meet Arthur’s gaze again for a moment before turning them back to the flowers.

Arthur couldn't help but smile a bit at her rambling . . . he found it rather adorable of her. He had heard her speak so many times before, for the years that she had served Morgana, and it was as if he was truly discovering who she really was for the first time. "If it is at all affecting you in negative ways . . . then I do believe that is reason for me to worry." Whether these thoughts concerned him or not, anything that upset her or made things difficult for her, was reason enough for Arthur to be concerned for her. Knowing that she felt awkward though . . . not that he was helping with that at all . . . he would have to restrain from telling her the real reason he had decided to stop in the garden.
"Just enjoying the day and all its beauty." It was no coincidence that his eyes locked on her when he spoke the word beauty. But he quickly looked away. "Things are quite around here for a change, which is nice. Gives us some peace until the next problem arises." Now he felt he was the one rambling. He was just trying to carry on the conversation to distract himself from saying what he really wanted to. "Guinevère, would you . . . like to take a walk around the garden with me?" It was a rather large one, and though the question itself made Arthur nervous, he tried to show confidence, wondering how successful he was in that since Gwen seemed to know him rather well. "That is, if you are not in a hurry to return to Morgana," he added, not wanting her to feel like she was obligated to accept his invitation and neglect her duties.

She hoped that Arthur didn’t realize it was him that was distracting her. And not really in a bad way. She hated it, but she didn’t really like it any other way.
“It is indeed a beautiful day, as I mentioned before.” Gwen said with a duck of her head. She nodded at Arthur’s words. It was indeed nice to have nothing happening for once. It seemed as though the drama didn’t stop in Camelot. “Yes I cannot help but agree with you on that one. There usually is something eventful happening. It seems oddly quiet of late.” Gwen agreed as she gazed back up at Arthur then automatically regretted it as she heard his next words. She tried not to grin too widely. “I would love to, Morgana will not miss my presence.” Gwen said. She really did not have much to do of late, a pleasant change.
Gwen wondered where Merlin was, usually he was trailing after Arthur for something. It was odd without that third presence, but nice. She liked spending time with Arthur even if it was as awkward as can be.

Arthur was ecstatic when she accepted his invitation. He had no idea what they would talk about . . . as their conversation so far was clearly awkward. But it was strange, for at the same time, he felt completely comfortable when he was with her. As if . . . he did not have to maintain a certain reputation, and that he could be his complete self when in her presence. It was a strange feeling indeed, and something rare. But from the moment she had spoken very openly and bluntly in front of him, criticizing him, he knew that she was honest and would not dwell in fear for saying something to him, just because he was the prince.
"I can not complain about the calmness of today. For it at least allows us to spend some time together." Wait . . . perhaps that was not the smartest thing to say, though it was the truth. "It allows many people to enjoy other people's company." Arthur felt his suaveness diminishing . . . so much for remaining an elegant prince. He began to walk towards the more open field, keeping his position alongside her. "So everything is well with you?" He know he asked it before, but was hoping she would go into more detail, as he was still very concerned about her well being -- and this concern would never cease to exist. "You really should take some time for yourself Guinevère. I am sure Morgana can manage. After your traumatic experience I feel that perhaps you should take a small vacation . . . you would certainly deserve it."
