The year is 2013. Arthur Pendragon, the once and future king, returns but enters into the modern world. After his death all those years ago, he was destined to come back when Albion's need was greatest, and while that was not when Guinevère ruled centuries ago, it is the case now. While his memory is in tact, most those he cares for have been reincarnated and hold no memory of their former lives . . . including Guinevère. What has caused him to return now? Why does he still recall the past when no one else does? And how will he adapt to the modern world when he has no understanding of it?
-----------------------------------------------------
Arthur gasped for air as his head finally emerged above the water level. Breathing had never felt so good. He had just woken abruptly at the bottom of whatever lake he was in, and instinct made him swim quickly to the surface. He had been used to moving in chainmail so at least that did not hinder him, it was the disorientation that really left him confused and frazzled. He moved his hand over his face to brush aside the water that was there so that he could see. Glancing around he realized that he was not far from the shore and so swam toward it. Once there he let his body collapse onto the ground, just takin a moment to catch his breath. He had no idea where he was or what was happening. But even in his state of disorientation, all he could think of was getting back to Camelot. He forced himself to rise to his feet, though he felt heavier than usual. He ntoiced that there was no sword in his belt and realized that he had no weapon to defend himself. As a warrior, he tended to notice that type of thing before the more obvious: that it was raining.
As if being wet from swimming wasn't bad enough, there was a horrible storm now Not letting that slow him down, he forced his feet to move forward, not even sure what direction he was meant to go in but hoped eventually the area would grow familiar. How wrong he was. As he walked forward, the ground changed. It became . . . harder and . . . odd. It was a different color. It was not earth but . . . there were mysterious lines on it. Arthur looked ahead and it seemed that the path went on for a while. Magic. That was the only explanation and it was too dark to see anything else. He slowly put one foot on the path and waited, as if expecting something to happen. When a few moments went by and nothing did, he put his other foot there. Strange. Very stange indeed. Having been distracted, he did not hear the approaching sound, until it was too close. He turned around and saw bright lights and a loud sound -- almost equivalent to that of a strange sounding beast -- until the creature hit him and he went flying back. His head hit the ground hard enough for him to be consumed by darkness again.
Setting: England Time of Day: Middle of the Night Timeline: Modern AU What If: Arthur returned to the modern world and finds Guinevère reincarnated, but holding no memory of their past life where as he remembers everything. Tag: Guinevère

"SHIT!" Guinevère Leodegrance slammed on her breaks and her older model bug fish tailed slightly before hitting the shinny man before her! "NO!" Finally the car came to a stop, and she used the parking brake to lock it, before getting out and stepping into the rain. "Sir?" She called, running towards him! "Mister! Please!" Kneeling down she tried to shake him but the metal . . . . WAS HE WEARING CHAINMAIL?! It made him too heavy! Slapping his face she realized he was out cold.
Thankfully, Gwen was a nurse! She was able to check over the parts she could get too, and make sure nothing was broken. Pulling out her cell, she tried to get a signal but out here, there was nothing! She was going to The Lake House BECAUSE there was nothing! She didn't want to be found! After everything that happened, after HIM, she just wanted to disappear for the long weekend. They were HOURS from anything! Nothing here but a lake, and a house.
Uther Pendragon's house. He was her boss, sort of--he was EVERYONE'S boss. Her direct boss, Gaius Wilson, had a key to this place and offered her the use since he knew that Uther would not use it. He understood her need to not face everyone for a few days.
Now she was stranded, with a body!
A few hours later--somehow--she had him in the house, and the chainmail removed. A frozen bag of peas over his head, and she was trying used her small flashlight to check his eyes. He was laying back on a bed, in nothing but his shirt and trousers. The house was so far out int he middle of nowhere, and the storm had killed the power. A generator backed it up but no wifi, no 3G, and no phones. "Please wake up!" She begged him, "Please! I need you to wake up!" And not be dead!

Arthur was unsure how much time had passed, not that this was the first time he had been knocked unconscious. In fact, it seemed to be a rather frequent occurrence whenever he was facing an attacker or was in the midst of battle. Eventually, he felt himself slowly growing conscious. He heard a voice, urging him to awaken. Before he could see, he could sense that presence. For he would recognize voice and touch anywhere. It was Guinevère. He moved his head a little, forcing himself to open his eyes so that he could see her. He didn't know how long they had been apart, but in his heart, something told him it was a little while. He wasn't sure where he had been, how he had gotten there -- or even where he was in the present.
He only knew that she was with him, and that was all that mattered. He slowly opened his eyes, seeing her beautiful face -- though blurred -- looking down at him. And there was a shiny light which was most probably an aftermath of his getting knocked out. He didn't want for the image to clear, because he knew it was her. "Guinevère," his said, his voice filled with so many different emotions, and where words often failed him, actions made up for it. He raised the upper half of his body, and wrapped his arms around her, holding her in a hug, and nestling his head in the crook of her neck. Taking in her scent, the feel of her in his arms . . . everything. He may not know what was going on, but he knew that they were together, and that was all that mattered.

He began opening his eyes and she breathed a sigh of gratefulness! HE WAS ALIVE! SHE HAD NOT KILLED HIM! He blinked and she smiled down at him, so glad to see him moving! However, before she could speak in her nurse tone, he spoke a name. Not just any name--HER NAME. Her full name, no one ever called her by her full name. Half the people she knew didn't even know what it was.
To make things more odd, he was hugging her! Gwen used her arms to keep herself up, so they didn't fall back on the bed. Had she need his nurse before, and not remembered him? "No one calls me that, you can just call me Gwen." Sh said, pulling back from the hug. "Lay back down, mate, I think you hit your head really hard. I want to make sure you're ok." Pushing on his shoulders, she tried to make him lie back.

Holding her in his arms, made him feel like he had departed from hell and risen to heaven. It felt so wonderful to have that familiarity, even though it had not been too long since he awoke and then fell unconscious again. He must have been near the city . . . or he was just unconscious for quite some time. "No one calls me that, you can just call me Gwen." Arthur smiled at her playful tease -- clearly still disoriented enough to not quite be able to read tones, nor look at her properly . . . or even gaze at his surroundings. No. He was far too distracted with her. With being with her. She often told him how she liked the way he said her name, so found her words rather amusing.
Her next ones were a bit odder -- mostly the use of the word mate but he did not dwell on it. This was his wife. Always caring, always worried for him, always wanting to make sure he was alright. He had never felt so cared for and so loved, than he did when he was with her. He moved his head back, refusing to lie down right now. Unless of course she joined him. "I'm fine," he said softly, gazing into her eyes with soft longing. How beautiful she looked, even under his hazed vision. She was still radiant, and the most exquisite women in all the world. Unable to restrain himself, he slowly leaned forward until their lips touched.

Gwen couldn't budge him. He was too strong! As a nurse she was used to doing things like moving men twice her size, but he was resisting. Glancing back at the heavy chains she wondered if that was why. It had been so hard to get off! She might have done him more damage removing it then with her car. Turning back to him she was surprised when he loses her.....KISS HER! A STRANGER SHE WAS TRAPPED WITH!
"No!" She yelled, falling back and scrambling off the bed. "Stay back!" Holding up her hand as if that had the power to stop him she tried to calm her thoughts. She could leave him here. Go back to the city. Let the police find him......but if he hit his head he could not fall back asleep. It was dangerous. And she owed him. "Look, Mister, I am a nurse. You hit your head, well......I hit your head. Not me, but my car. My car hit your head." Sort of. "You were in the road, and it was raining, and dark, and the only reason I even saw you enough to stop was because of all that metal. So just stay back, and I won't be forced to hit you again. "

Her reaction to his embrace was far from what he expected. She pushed him back, but not in a way that showed she was too concerned for him and wanted him to rest. But rather . . . in a way that made her leap back away from him, and seemingly want nothing to do with him. He blinked a few times, caught of guard by her reaction -- though It seems that she was more caught off guard than he. With him now trying to focus on his surroundings, his vision began to clear up as she spoke things he did not understand. Mister? Car? What on earth was a car? Was his mind distorting the words, or was she speaking another language? Why was she threatening to hit him? Wait . . . what was she wearing?! Arthur just stared at her, unsure as to where to even start. "I . . . don't understand," he began to say. He looked around the room, everything looking so unfamiliar. He was no where in the castle, that was for sure. He stumbled out of bed, catching himself just before he fell, and standing up once again, still trying to gain his balance and stop his head from spinning. "Where am I? What is this?" This place. This trickery. This . . . he couldn't get over her clothes. While he wasn't exactly into a woman's fashion, surely this was not the latest trend. And Guinevère always dressed so exquisitely, yet now . . . and . . . she looked different. And of course sounded different. And . . . where the hell was he?!

OH! Good he was sort of coming too! No longer trying to hug and kiss her but noticing this wasn't a dream and he was no longer in the woods. Sighing with relief Gwen dropped her hand. "This is a Lake House, near the lake that you were at. It belongs to my boss' boss." She explained, "When I hit you, I brought you here to get us out of the rain."
"You should lay back down! I hot you really hard, and you seem a bit . . . . unsteady. Do you have friends out there? Is someone going to be looking for you?" She noticed that he had looked up and down her, and while she was wearing respectable clothes, Gwen got the impression he did not approve of her shorts and tank top. "Do you want some water?" Or something stronger, she thought to herself.

She may be answering his questions and trying to explain, but he didn't understand anything. None of what she was saying made any sense. She spoke to him as if she had no idea who he was. Why?! What had Morgana done now?! Arthur couldn't speak, but rather, he tried to focus his racing mind. There had to be somewhere to get answers because . . . this wasn't his Guinevère. He could tell from a single moment -- a single action -- that it was not her. Granted, he had been quite oblivious for all that time Morgana had her under her dark spell -- but this was different. It was far more obvious. She asked if he had any friends and he tried to think. Was there anyone out there looking for him? An entire kingdom most likely! If they knew he was here. How long had he been missing for? And of course, there was the most significant person that would be looking for him: her. Only she didn't know it.
"Merlin," he stated, the name suddenly coming out. YES! Merlin! He had magic -- still to Arthur's shock but that was just one more complicated and shocking thing to add to the current list. "Where's Merlin?" This all had to be because of magic. Arthur refused to sit down. As soon as she told him where he was, he was going to go out and find the warlock. He just . . . needed for things to go back to normal. Would they never find peace? Would there always be one attack after the other? Arthur was tired. Worn out and tired from all this, and he'd only been conscious for a matter of moments. He sincerely hoped that Guinevère knew who Merlin was. But he knew there was a chance she didn't. For if she did not even recognize her own husband, would she remember or know who Merlin was?

He didn't move to lay back down but instead stood there looking very tall and strong, which made her realize she should be feeling unease about this strange man in a house with her while she was ALONE and SO FAR from any sign of help. No one would hear her scream out here. No would would even know to look for her for days. The only one who knew where she was was Gaius and he was not expecting to hear from her until next week. Yet for some reason she trusted that he would not hurt her, but she didn't know why. The knowlage that she had faulty judgment made her edge away from him.
Merlin? That was who he asked for? "Merlin? As in the old wizard?" She asked, and looked at his clothes before looking back at the links of chain he had been wearing. Was he one of the men who re-enacted things? Or was he a fan boy who coplayed and didn't know the real names of the others in his group. "Is he in the woods too?" She asked, trying to find out if he was alone. "Do you know his real name? It's storming too much for anyone to go out there and look for anyone." But she did worry. If someone was caught out there, could get they shelter? She had no way to call for help if they got injured. "Is he the only one with you?"

"Merlin? As in the old wizard?" YES! Exactly! Though, Merlin wasn't really old. He was around Arthur's age. Her following questions made him realize that while she seemed to know who he was, she didn't really know him. With his one question, she had answered with a series of them, and he didn't know the response to any. One thing he did determine was that she had no idea where Merlin was, and that certainly didn't help his situation. He wanted to go back into the woods and search for him but . . . no. He had to. Merlin would have all the answers. Though, despite her strange behavior and bizarre clothing, he didn't want to leave Guinevère. He wanted to stay with her. For her presence alone was a mere comfort, even if she did not recall him as her husband. "He was the last person I saw before . . . " He tried to remember what happened to him, tried to recall the last moments before darkness consumed him.
"I need to find him," Arthur said stubbornly as he grabbed his chainmail. He didn't care if the weather was bad, he was used to traveling in severe conditions. So long as that creature didn't hit him again . . . wait, Guinevère said that she had hit him! It didn't make any sense. "I know that he will have all the answers." Didn't he always? Arthur paused, looking at her. He took a few steps toward her as he spoke. "Guinevère . . . you really do not remember who I am?" He asked softly, his voice trying to mask the pain at such a reality. Before, Morgana had used her to try and kill him. That was enough emotional trauma for Guinevère. Now, whatever magic had caused this, wiped Guinevère's mind clear of who he was and who she was to him. And apparently, of Merlin too.

He picked up the chain shirt thing, and seemed like he would leave. "You can't go out there in that weather." He was talking about Merlin, and needing to find him, but it was still storming hard. Then he stepped closer to her, called her Guinevère and then asked her if she knew who he was. "My name is Gwen." She told him, trying to shake off how intimate he made her name sound.
"Not Guinevère." It was, but he didn't need to know that. "And we have never met before. I live in London. I am a nurse, perhaps if we did meet it was there? Have you ever been in the hospital before?" Perhaps in the metal ward? She knew that was unkind, but he wasn't behaving like he should. "What's your name, mate? Way you are dress like a knight from the darkages?"

He wasn't sure what to say when she said that her name wasn't Gwen. He didn't think he could bring himself to call her that. It wasn't as if it was a big deal, but it was just something they shared. He was one of the only people who ever called her by her full name, and he knew that she liked that. Yet now, she was asking him not to call her Guinevère. She said that they had never met before and the words made his heart break. She had no recollection of him, of them. Of everything they had been through. She spoke of how she was a nurse in London . . . which kingdom was London? He didn't understand anything she was saying, yet knew he had to give some sort of response. And then she asked him why he was dressed like a knight from the dark ages.
Because . . . he was a knight. And he knew that they had been through a dark period, but dark ages? That was a bit much. "Because I am," he said confidently. "My name is Arthur Pendragon, not Mate." Why did she keep calling him that? Where did she get that name from. He knew that he would have to reintroduce himself to her, perhaps speaking of who he was would help her remember. "I am crown king of Camelot," he added. But most importantly, the most significant thing . . . was that he was her husband. "I must find Merlin. He will know what is happening." He put the chainmail on over his head, still wishing he had a sword. "Which kingdom am I in right now?" He asked. She said she was from London . . . was it far from Camelot?

"My name is Arthur Pendragon, not Mate." Oh good! He knew his name! It was a bit old fashioned, and she knew there had even been a king once named that but as long as he knew his name--"I am crown king of Camelot," OH NO! OH DEAR! CRAP! She broke him! She was going to jail for sure! "I must find Merlin. He will know what is happening." The wizard from the King Arthur tails. Great!
"Which kingdom am I in right now?" What? "There is no kingdoms any longer." She said, "Looks . . . . 'Arthur' . . . . This is the year 2013, and we live in countries. This one is called England. Arthur Pendragon, the king of Camelot lived in the year 500 or 600. That was thousands of years ago." Or at least one thousand. "You are not a king from the middle ages."

What did she mean no longer any kingdoms? What a ridiculous notion! Where did they live . . . what the hell was a country?! She was speaking English it seemed, yet Arthur did not understand any of what she was saying. This spell placed on her was oh so powerful, and he wished he could break it. He didn't know anything about magic though. The only way he knew how to break a spell was through true love's kiss, and it was clear that she did not remember that she loved him. This was why he needed Merlin, to establish what spell this one and determine a way to remedy her of it. "It can not be 2013. That is impossible," he said stubbornly. He was not going to let this spell consume his mind. "I will break you of this spell, Guinevère. I promise." With that, he walked out of the room, determined to find Merlin, and . . . nearly froze at what he saw in the next.
Nothing looked familiar. There was a large black box . . . a bit of an odd mirror, for Arthur saw his reflection in it but it was not clear. He walked up to it, waving his hand in front of it as he wondered if it was some sort of creature. But it didn't react. What a terrible mirror indeed. As he backed up from it, he bumped into something else, nearly knocking it over but catching it just in time. It was a strange looking object, with a candle in it for it gave off a light. Arthur looked under the covering . . . and saw no candle. But a strangely shaped, something. It still gave of light and once again, he was fascinated. He reached up to touch it. "OW!" He yelled when the object burned his hand. Frustrated, he threw it to the side as it collapsed into pieces on the floor. "What is this place . . . " He asked aloud, wishing he had his sword to protect himself. For clearly, this place was wreaking of sorcery.

He said he was going to break her from this spell. He thought she was under a spell? Guinevère watched him walk out of the room while she stood there in a mild form of shock, and used the moment to attempt to sort out her thoughts.
There was so much conflicting information that she had seen and he had given that she wasn't sure where to begin. He thought he was a knight, but it was 2013. She had hit him with her car, but he was dressed the part. He---was that a crash?
Running into the next room she paused there for a moment, "Oy!" Gwen called, running to pick u the lamp. "This might cost more then I make in a month! Don't touch anything!" Was it broken? What had it looked like before? Looking back up at him she knew she had to do something. "Look, 'Arthur', why don't you just sit down and let us talk about this, k? Please?" Before he broke something she could not replace.

How could Arthur deny any request from Guinevère? She may not remember him, but his memory was completely in tact. He loved her and so when she asked him to do something, even in her current enchanted state, how could he go against her wish? He couldn't. Simple as that. Besides, this area terrified him. For he didn't know what anything was. Everything was clearly enchanted. He gave a small nod of compliance as he looked around for something that looked similar to a chair. He went over to it and sat down, practically sinking into it. What was it made of?! It was . . . rather comfortable, yet a little awkward too. He fidgeted around in it, trying to get comfortable yet clearly not knowing how. It was making a strange sound too whenever he moved about on it.
It almost felt like the same material that his vest was made out of . . . but not really. When he finally felt somewhat . . . well adjusted, he looked back at her, focusing his entire attention on her. "What is the last thing you remember, Guinevère?" He asked, wondering if she had any recollection of their home. Her mind was clearly in a different era -- one that didn't exist. But did she remember her father? Her days as a maid? Most likely not if she didn't even recognize him. "What about Morgana?" She knew Merlin, did she know Morgana too? And if so, where was the last place she saw her? Arthur may have watched Morgana die but that didn't mean she hadn't found a way to return. Who else could be responsible for such powerful sorcery? He knew this wasn't Merlin's doing, this curse was far too evil and twisted.

It was almost amusing to watch him attempt to settle in the arm chair. Had she not been stressed about his mental state then she might have laughed. Maybe. "I am not under a spell. My name is Gwen, I was born and raised in London. I have parents and a brother. I went to school. Made friends. Went to medical school and became a nurse. There is no holes or gaps in my memory. I am not. ...... who you think I am."
Nor was he. "Look if you think your this king from a thousand years ago, then why are you here?" Why was she humoring him? "Arthur Pendragon is dead. He has a grave sight near Cammalann or something." Didn't he? "Your not him!"
