Goodbye

This could not be happening.
No. It was unimaginable. How had it come to this? Only the other day he was lying next to her, enjoying a wonderful picnic . . . and now, she was getting dragged away to be burned at the stake for a crime she did not even commit! His father believed that he had been enchanted, and this could not be further from the truth. It infuriated Arthur that the king was being so dismissive about this; that he did not even consider the possibility that Arthur could have fallen in love with someone who was not of nobility. What was so wrong about that?! She was a person! A human being! And his father acted as if being in love with a servant was as sickening as a plague.
This could not be happening.
Arthur attempted, with all his might, to struggle free from the hold that the two guards had on him. "Guinevère!" He cried. His voice had reached a tone and pitch of desperation he had never hit before, and rather than angry, he was devastated. He had never been this vulnerable before, but everyone seemed to know what his weak spot was. Friends, enemies and now his father. And out of them all, his father's reaction angered him the most. He was barley able to see her and fought against the guards, knowing he had to get away and . . . and do something! Something to stop this horrific act! This could not be the last time he would ever see her!
This could not be happening.
Setting: Starts in the throne room, eventually to the dungeon Time of Day: Night time Timeline: During Queen of Hearts when Guinevère is arrested Tag: Guinevère and Alexander Notes: I'm just starting this thread to build the moment up and then you two can take over!

No! No! No! Guinevère started to panic. She had been brave until this point, not having cried nor begged like she had done last time however at this point she knew that she was going to die. Unlike last time, Arthur would not be able to save her. She started to cry, and her breathing came fast and hard as two of the castle guards whos job it was to protect the innocent came to lift her from the ground. She could not even fight them, for they were strong and gripped her arms hard.
The last time this had happened, she'd begged for her life but this time she had meant to be strong. Even when the king had back handed her, she had not cried nor showed him how deep her fear ran. However, Guinevère had known from the moment Arthur said he would give up the crown for her that the king would only see one way out of this.
"Arthur!" She knew she was begging now, like she had told her self she would not but rational thought did not enter her mind. She only knew she was about to die, and she did not want to. "A-Arthur!" She begged, her voice not as strong as the first time she'd almost yelled his name as her panic and tears were choking her; "Arthur pleass--" She almost got out the word please but her tears choked back the sound as she watched him fight ageist the guards who held him back!

Hearing her beg and cry for her life, and not being able to do anything about it, made Arthur more desperate than ever. They were taking her away! They were taking away the woman he loved to be burned at the stake! NO! Arthur fought against the guards hold, his mind too losing all rationality. He didn't care that this room was filled with people, he needed to get to her . . . one last time. He needed to tell her he loved her . . . one last time. He needed to kiss her . . . . . . . . one last time. "NO!" He exclaimed as somehow, he managed to break free from the guards hold.
He ran up to Guinevère and put his arms around her firmly, stopping the men from dragging her away. Without hesitating for a moment, he desperately pressed his lips against hers, knowing that they may never be able to do this again. This kiss was filled with more emotion than ever before, as it was filled with fear, devastation, and an unconditional love for her. He would steal these few moments with her that would forever last a lifetime.

Guinevère was trying to free her self but it was like fighting ageist the castle walls. The guards holds were too firm and with her hands bound she could no do much of anything but watch Arthur struggle as well. She was crying, tears pouring over her cheeks. "Arthur!" She begged just as she saw him break free. He ran up to her and she left his hands on her. For once they were not gentle and soft but in this moment she did not want gentle.
She kissed him back, trying to pull ageist the guards, knowing this was her last kiss. This would be the moment she thought of in the end. She felt one of the guards give a hard tug but on which one of them she did not know. One moment she was kissing him for the last time and the next they were parted. She wanted to call his name again but only the sounds of her sobs could be heard. She could only watch him get pulled back, as she was dragged to the door!

The few seconds he had were not enough; they were never be enough. He was forced away all too soon, feeling the guards literally pull him back against his will. Arthur was not ready to end the kiss but with them being pulled away in different directions, it was impossible to continue. "I will always love you," he said in one quick breath, though it was not lacking in sincerity. He needed her to know that. That he never meant for this to happen, though he would never forgive himself. He would die with her, even if he was still physically alive. He had given his heart to her a long time ago and so if she died, he would as well.
The guards continued to pull him back, creating more distance between them as Arthur stared helplessly at the woman he loved. He was fighting back his emotions, not wanting to break down sobbing in front of all these people, for it was still sinking in, despite the fact that she was being dragged away. He could not accept this was the last time he would see her. No. It couldn't be. He gave a pained expression, as the men continued to firmly hold him in place, feeling his heart breaking into millions of pieces.

Guinevère watched him as she was pulled out the doors. Her eyes only left him when she saw Morgana walking behind him. She looked there in a pleading glance hoping there was something Morgana could do to help her or comfort Arthur at the very least but the look on Morgana's face made everything freeze inside Guinevère. Even her tears stopped for a moment out of the pure shock of seeing Morgana looking at Arthur and . . . smiling . . . .
Guinevère watched her, unable to drag her eyes off of that smile even to look at Arthur and she was taken into the hall and beyond. In that moment she knew, she had to warn someoen before Morgana did Arthur some real harm. Before Morgana tired to do something bigger then kidnap her brother and frame her for this.
--A few Hours Later--
Gwen was so afraid she could not move. She could only stand there with her neck slightly stretched to watch as they built the stage that would be used to kill her. Merlin had just come and gone not yet an hour ago if even that long. She'd asked him to look after Arthur. She knew that this would hurt him, and she was wishing she had just left everyone with out a goodbye.
She had been packing when they'd came for her. She had not yet said goodbye to anyone, not even Alex, Brynn, nor any of her friends in the castle. She thought she would have three days for that, not a handful of hours. Everything had changed because of another poultice. The first one that had been found almost three years ago, and had almost gotten her burned at the stake. Arthur had been the one to arrest her that time, and Morgana had come in begged for her life.
This time everything was so very different. Arthur had begged for her life, even offered to give up everything for her. It had broken her heart that he would give up so much for her. This time, Morgana had seemed . . . .
Gwen felt her self shiver at the memory.

Goodbye

Post by Alexander on Nov 21, 2010 18:16:02 GMT -5
Alex broke a dish for the first time since he had come to work in the castle kitchens. He stared blankly at the pieces as the two gossiping servants turned to look at him. He shook his head slightly as if to erase the words said. Guinevère was in the cells, and she was to be burned at the stake for witchcraft. It was an odd hollow feeling in the pit of his stomach that only seemed to grow as the loud unnatural silence fell in the kitchens. Those who knew of their friendship seemed only to have pity stretch across their features. That frightened him, but the worst were the people who looked like they had already written Gwen off as guilty. It was that that drove Alex to turn on his heel and flee.
He left the kitchens without so much as a word and let his feet carry him to the stairs. Down he went, his face set in a stony countenance he wore very rarely. As he neared the guards he remembered he had forgotten to think of what he would tell them to get past. He approached and slowed his pace. Alex stopped in front of them and let his hands flutter in vague gestures as he tried to speak. He felt that it must have been both pity and impatience in the guards that allowed him entrance. He cursed in his mind that he had not heard the news sooner as he approached the cell where he could make out his friends figure in the dim lighting.
Kneeling at the bars when he reached the cell, Alex could not help but breath a bit shallower when he made out the beginnings a a stake through the cell's upper window. "Gwen.." He said softly. His voice was a bit raspy from his run down to the dungeon's but he cleared his throat. He found himself clutching at the bars futiley. The strong metal only caused him further distress. Gwen had been his first true friend here in the castle. He looked to her for advice when he needed it, and she had never steered him wrong. She was as a second sister to him and he could never believe she would be capable of using witchcraft for nefarious means. He had seen the way Arthur looked at her. There was no way it was a spell. That was something no magic could ever fake. Alex stuttered but could not bring himself to say anything coherrent.

Gwen turned quickly at his soft voice. She had not hear him come up to the door for she was so lost in thought. "A-alex." She tired to force the words out before crossing her arms over her chest like she might be cold. She wasn't, it was fear. Taking the few steps that would bring her to the cell door she keeled down as well so they could be eye to eye. "You should not be here." The last thing she wanted was the king or knights to think Alex or Merlin was working with her. The king saw no reason when he thought magic was involved and with this he was more then angry.
Her cheek and arms where bruised from the events of the last few hours, and she was starting to feel the depression coming to hit from knowing there was no way out this time. "I don't want them thinking you are part of this." Merlin had come by to see her, but he'd been forced to leave her quickly. The king knew Merlin was close to her and him and Elyan were not allowed to visit her.
She looked at Alex though the bars and wondered if he believed any of this. She knew how gossips worked, and how the news of her father's 'guilt' and filled the lowertowns with in hours. It was shocking how much it hurt for people you called your friends to believe things like this. Alex's face did not looked betrayed, however, so she doubted he would. Alex was a good man, and she felt lucky she'd gotten to known him while she could.

"Since when have I ever cared about what I should and shouldn't do?" He said with a soft chuckle that was stopped by a quick breath. He found it hard to laugh when he felt like a cry would come out instead. Alex was aware that it probably was not best for him to be seen with Gwen now, but he could not bring himself to leave her here. She looked frightened and he could see the marks where the guards had grabbed her. It made him angrier whenever the dim light let him see them. He also could not tell whether she was cold or simply afraid. Either way, it was not an expression he liked seeing on her face.
"There is nothing to be a part of. You are innocent." He said strongly as his voice seemed to return. His whole being echoed with that statement. There was absolutely no way he would have Gwen even speak like that. Alex could not find it in himself to even consider his own saftey when it was Gwen in the cell. Alex was almost reminded of the anger and guilt he had felt when his father died. Anger at him being taken and guilt for not having known him better. He could not stand to think of another being taken from him. Not due to some pigheaded witchhunt which had no basis in fact.
Alex pressed his forhead against the bars and studied the floor as he tried to compose himself. He could not cry here and now. He would save his tears for those of relief. He could save them for when a miracle occurred and Gwen was let out. As Alex looked up his confident and eccentric demeaner of usual was gone. He was just a young boy who could not quite understand why everything seemed to be falling apart. "It can't happen like this. It won't. Arthur will... someone... It won't."

Guinevère was not overly surprised that Alex thought her innocent but the rush of emotions that hit her was enough that a few tears rolled over her cheeks. He believed her, and that meant more to her then anything else right now coming from a friend. She knew most would believe as they were told, and that they would wonder how she could have done this; but not Alex. No, Alex and Merlin were stronger then she was, and they would be there for her.
Til the end.
She knew she should take this moment to ask him not to allow Merlin to come to her 'trail by fire'. If Alex was keeping Merlin away then he would not be their either. She did not want either of them there, to see her like that. That should be no ones last memory of their friend.
Looking at Alex as he placed his forehead on the bars, her heart broke for everything she would not get to share with him. She would never know how things turned out with him and Brynn, nor any of the mischief that he would get into. "Alex," She said his name softly, before shaking her head slowly. Even that much movement made her left cheek feel the painful reminder of Uther's hand. "This is not like last time. Arthur can not find a monster to slay and blame. The king thinks I have enchanted his son. He thinks that everything between us is because I want revenge for my father. If the the king learns you were here, he might wonder if you were apart of this. Your being here could put you in danger."

Goodbye

Post by Alexander on Dec 2, 2010 16:39:12 GMT -5
Somehow Alex's mind couldn't quite grasp the concept of a lost cause. Instead he shook his head as she spoke as if the shake such thoughts away. There was no way he would ever let something happen. He was positive there must be some way around the horrible events that seemed to unfold in front of his eyes. He raised his eyes from the floor only to see Gwen was crying. After a brief moment he realized he was as well. It was a strange thing to cry in front of someone else. Or to cry at all for Alex. He could not recall the last time he had ever felt so helpless.
"Then we have to get you out somehow. You have friends who know the castle like the back of their hands. And don't even try to tell any of us not to help you and to stay out of trouble. We're a bit to stubborn for that." He said with a fierce determination that surprised even him. He knew many ways in and out of the castle and he also knew there were others who wished to help Gwen just as much as he did. He bitterly realised that Uther highly underestimated the people who worked for him. That happened to also have been the reason for Gwen's imprisonment to begin with, for he could not see how his son could love a servant, and so it was fitting that would be how they got her out.
Inwardly Alex knew what he was saying was impossible. Even if he did know how to get her out of the castle and city, there were still guards at the end of the hall here. Alex might have fought an undead skeleton once, but he was pretty sure that two normal guards would have no trouble stopping them. Alex didn't even have a pot shield this time. He searched frantically through his mind for something that could help Gwen, anything that could help Gwen, but he found only despairing thoughts. He had been to an execution before. He could not watch another.
"There must be something I can do..." He spoke softly. It was the pleading voice of a child.

Gwen's heart broke when Alex cried, for she knew he was hurting. She reached though the bars and wiped a few of them away before letting her hand slide back to her own side. Out of everyone she'd gotten to know while in Camelot, Alex was one of the better people. At first he had reminded her of so many people, but now all those people reminded her of him. He was so special to remind her of anyone but him. Merlin was like her brother, and her dearest friend in the city; but Alex was as well. She hated he had to see her like this.
"No!" She said firmly but also remembering to keep erh voice down so no one could over hear them. "Alex, no! If you were caught you'd only burn next to me! I can not allow you to risk your life! You have to think of your sister and of Brynn! Even if you did get me out, you'd be outlawed. You'd be on the run with me. I can not let you do this." She loved him a million times over for the offer, but she could not let him.
He asked if there was anything he could do and she gave him a small nod. "There is something you can do for me." Her voice broke with the emotion of what she was about to ask. "Elyan my brother; either he has yet to hear about this--" Which she HIGHLY doubted "--or they are not letting him in to see me." Which seemed to fit more, "Can you tell him something for me? Can you tell him that I love him, and tell him to stay out of trouble." Which would be hard on him. Elyan stayed in trouble, which worried her.

Alex felt Gwen wipe a few stray tears from his face and he let them raise to search her expression. In that moment he believed with every part of his being that Gwen was the bravest person he knew. Not everyone could face this situation and still put their loved ones first. However, this just made him break a bit more. He was losing a sister. One who he had known would be important to him from their first meeting. Even among the suds and while washing dishes he knew that Gwen was truly something else.
"I will find him and pass the message on. Although, this time tommorrow you can tell him yourself." He said with a hope beneath his words. There were no such things as hopeless cases. Alex would never be able to think that way. He did not believe in no win scenarios (<3). There was always the chance that things could get better. If there wasn't, then what hope was there for the rest of them? Alex could feel the cold ground through the knees of his pants and found his anger growing at the harsh conditions of the cell. Could the king not even spare that mercy? He pushed the thoughts away quickly. He would not let this moment be clouded with an anger that would do no good.
Alex looked into the wall for a moment. He found it took him a few seconds to pull his self back to the present. The feeling had a surreal and dizzying effect. For that spot in time, Alex did not know what to do. For all his words, he could not find any now. What was he to say to her? Now, just as it seemed his life was on the right track it was to all be ruined. He had friends, he was in love, and he had another sister. His hands fiddled with the bars and his voice dropped to a hush. "I am fortune's fool." ((End it with a bit of shakespeare. Seems fitting.))

Guinevère tried to smile when he told her she could tell her brother her self but she knew better. The first time she had been framed for witch craft, Merlin had ran to Arthur and gotten help proving that it was not her but some creature in the wells below the castle. Morgana had come to her aid as well, and with both his son and his ward speaking of proof the king had let her go. This time, Morgana would not be coming to her aid, and Arthur was . . . .
She did not want to think about what might happen with Arthur. She did not want him to see her die! She did not want him to hear her if she had to scream. Gwen closed her eyes and forced the thoughts away that would lead her down that path. She was trying VERY hard not to think about what would happen in a matter of hours.
Alex spoke again and she forced her mind to think on his words rather then her own thoughts. "You are no one's fool, Alex." She told him, thinking these would be her parting words to him. "Do not let anyone tell you other wise. Ever! You have the kindest heart that anyone ever had, and you have a way with words that I envy; but you are no a fool." She knew he had not meant it quite that way, but she wanted to make sure he knew. "I love you like you were another brother of mine. Thank you for being my friend. For making be feel special ever since that day in the kitchens."

The words Gwen spoke were perhaps the highest praise Alex had ever recieved. His hands tightened further around the bars and he felt a sting where small scrapes started. He was almost bitter as he thought. What use were a way with words and a kind heart when they could not help Gwen now? He found himself shutting his eyes just to banish said thoughts from his mind. He would not leave Gwen here with those kinds of feelings coursing through him. Truly it was the kindness she herself was showing that pained Alex the most. only Gwen would think of others when she knew she was to die.
"You are my sister. Perhaps not in blood, but in spirit." He said softly. His voice rasped slightly and he felt the effects of his run down from the kitchen and the chilled air of the dungeons. Alex felt that the worst feeling he found in himself was that last bit of hope that refused to be extinguished. It was silly, but he would not let it go.
"You did not me to make you feel special. You are special, Gwen. Arthur loves you, I love you, and many others also love you. Please do not give up hope. There is always a way." He said. His eyes looked at Gwen unblinkingly as he tried his best to plead with her to not despair. Alex could not take the unhappiness of those he loved, and he was trying his best not to be overwhelmed by his own feelings as it was. Like a child, he was still not used to seeing the world for as it was. The shadows still remained as beings who lurked in the corners. It was dissillusioning to a point where Alex was unsure if he would ever view things quite the same.

Whatever she had done right, to earn Alex as a friend then Gwen wished she could do again. Whatever actions granted her this brother into her life should be repeated. Instead of worrying about what this might cost him, or how others might look at him for his actions; he only seemed to care about trying to give her hope.
It was a bit odd, for normally she was trying to give Arthur hope. For someone to say the words to her, made her wonder if she should at lest try to pretend to have hope for Alex's sake. His last memories of her should not be of this. She opened her mouth to tell him he was right, but at the moment he spoke of Arthur loving her and no words came out.
She knew Alex knew of her feelings, however it was not ask they spoke of it often. Hearing others tell her they knew was always a surprise, even if it was Merlin. She knew Arthur loved her, and she had known the risks of meeting him in the woods. "I will not give up hope." She promised, trying to make her self believe it, if only for Alex. "I do not wish to die, Alex, and I will try not to give up hope." However, she knew that she was not getting let out of this with out something drastic happening with in the next few hours.

Perhaps what pained Alex the most was that, after his father's death, he only nightmares had always been about losing his mother or his little sister Lita. After his step-father came into the picture, the nightmares had stopped. For a while Alex had not thought that he had to worry for his family so much. Now it was as if the world had decided to play a joke on him that was not even remotely funny. The ones he had worried over for so long were not the ones that he had needed to fear for. Lita might be safe, but he was still about to lose a sister.
Gwen's words helped Alex a bit, but it was only a shallow comfort. It was still an ugly reminder that he could do nothing to help but hope. Alex felt a bitter resentment toward the king and towards the whole kingdom as a whole in that moment. During the great Dragon attacks Alex had seen Gwen doing her best to help the injured people of Camelot, and now they abandoned her. How quickly those you trust seemed to ready to fail you. Alex did his best to hide the feelings from his expression and tried to give a reassuring smile. It could not have looked like much of a smile, and most likely came out as a bit of a frown.
"If I stopped making a fool of myself in front of Brynn then anything is possible." Alex said with an attempt at his usual humour. It fell a bit flat. His voice shook slightly and he still felt the threat of tears right above his lower eye lashes.
"This time tommorrow we can laugh over the dishes. I even promise I won't juggle them this time." He said. This time a sad smile managed to grace his features momentarily. He felt a tear leak but made no move to wipe it off. Alex also felt his hands slip off the bars to rest on his knees where the knelt into the ground. He knew he must look a bit of a mess in his disheveled state, but he doubted anyone would dare to speak to him when he left. Perhaps out of sympathy, or perhaps because they knew they would recieve no jovial answer as per usual, and that was to chilling an idea to contemplate.

"If I stopped making a fool of myself in front of Brynn then anything is possible." Gwen found her self giving a honest laugh at his words. It was small and there was a strong sadness in the sound but the little half laugh came out anyway. She wanted to badly to know how that would all end one day.
She prayed silently that when that love story ended it would be when they were both old with children and grandchildren there to celebrate their long lives together. She knew that if Alex's little sister could wrap her self so tightly around him, that any child of his would utterly consume him and she wanted to see that. To see the little daughters that he would be the perfect Dad to. Alex was like her own father in a way, the happy and good man. She wanted to see the son's he'd raise to be good men, and the daughter's he'd spend his whole life trying to protect.
She reached though the bars to gently wipe off his tear. She'd never really seen Alex cry, and it was so devastatingly different from his normal wonderful and happy self that her heart broke. She blinked quickly to hide her own tears, not wanting him to see her cry. She forced her own smile at when he promised not to juggle the dishes. "Tomorrow." She promised, pulling her hand back to rest on the bars. "It's a promise." She knew she was lying, but she knew that sometimes lies were kinder then the truths. "And then we can supper at my home." Her home . . . . What would happen to it now?

Hearing her laugh was almost sadder to Alex. Even now she tried to make him feel better. He could simply not imagine not seeing her everyday in the future. Who else would straighten him out everytime he got jealous of other men around Brynn? Alex could not imagine a future where Gwen wasn't the cool aunt that his children insisted on seeing every other day. Alex could see the way Lita would grow up always trying to emmulate Gwen and Brynn in whatever they did. Lita was already enamored with the two older girls, and Alex could not see himself explaining why Gwen could no longer see them.
"And then we can supper at my home." Gwen had said. Alex knew that it was silly to play pretend like they were, but he could not bring himself to shatter the illusion. So instead he nodded.
"I'll make something nice, and you can have the night off. You work too hard anyway." He said. He could do no more then give a half hearted chuckle, but he tried none the less. He already thought of what he could make. Perhaps he could convince the head chef to let him use the spices from the kitchens. Plus there were always nice ingriedients to be found in the markets near their homes. Of course he would bring fresh bread from the bakery.
"We'll invite Brynn and everyone else we know. It can be a welcome home party." He said. Perhaps it was silly to hope, but it was all they had left. He felt her wipe away a few of his tears and smiled gratefully at her. He could not think of a greater sister to have found.

He was describing a casual and fun evening between friends and it was nice. It was something that on any normal day would make her count the hours til supper when they could all just be who they were and not have to hide anything nor mind their manners. It was heaven, but right now thinking on it; only made her heart hurt more. Would she ever have that evening again?
"You could bring your sister, and I could invite Gawain and Emma. The girls can play." If she was thinking of this for real she would point out that they all could not fit into her small home and they would need to host it else were. Her table only fit two comfortable, four if you sat close. You could almost fit six if you used stools but she did not have but one.
"Alex," She knew that this would ruin their little game but she has to say this now. "I don't think my brother will stay in Camelot should the worse happen. If he leaves, Gawain will care for the forge but. . . . " She knew what she wanted, she wanted to know that the one place that held memories of her father and brother always remained with someone who would give it more memories. Build a family in it. "You should take the house. It would be a nice little pace close to your parents. Perfect if you took a wife."
