It had been quite a boring day if Merlin was honest. He’d done all of his chores, including cheating along the way when his mother wasn’t looking. He knew she didn’t exactly take too kindly to objects moving around the home by themselves, but he couldn’t help it – nor could he control it fully. Sometimes they’d just wander by themselves. There were times when Merlin really wanted to ask his mother if she was afraid of him, about whether she thought he was a freak because he was different to the other children in the village. The only real friend he had Will – and even sometimes he’d make jokes about it.
Merlin had taken some time to sneak off to the woods that surrounded the village – it was the only place where he could truly be alone to actually practice this power. He’d always been able to do it, from his earliest memory – perhaps even earlier, but no matter how many times Hunith told him that he was special, Merlin knew he would always be looked at differently because of what he could do. He’d spent most of his afternoon levitating a large log and had made it stop mid-air just by thinking. By the time he’d played around with this a few times (all of it witnessed by a very bemused squirrel) he decided he should be getting home before his mother worried – Merlin wasn’t about to launch into his afternoon playing with a log.
“I’m back!” he called as he kicked open the door with his foot, arms piled high with sticks for the fire which he’d searched for on the way back. “And I found some sticks!” he tried to sound upbeat and excited by this revelation. Sticks could be fun when they wanted to be. Putting them down in the corner by the fire, Merlin put his hands on his hips and looked down smugly at his work. “I think there’s enough there to last a week if I say so myself”.
