Hello everyone!
Here are the entries for the June writing competition, please send me your votes by the 20th!
Entry OneTom looked into the mirror trying to sort out his collar and jacket. His wife would always giggle at him and say he had clumsy hands unless he was in his smithy. A sad smile graced his lips when he thought of her. He abandoned his collar and looked down at his children. His eldest, Elyan was attempting to tie his sister’s hair. The result was all over the place, but he was trying to cheer her up. Gwen had been crying all night, her only comfort being her brother's whispers of ‘it’s all right’ and ‘everything will be okay.’ Even now she held on to his hand so tightly with her small chubby fingers as if her life depended on it. His son was wearing black trousers, which he’d always hated. But they were all wearing black today, even his little Guinevère.
He bent down to his children’s heights putting a large hand on each of their shoulders. “Are we all ready?” He smiled warmly at them. Gwen nodded, returning the smile. His son’s face, however, was still stony and cold. Tom wished his children would never have to know the pain of loss but that wasn’t the way the world worked. Elyan looked into his father’s eyes with tears spilling out of his own and whispered, “I miss mummy.” It took all of Tom’s strength not to cry at seeing the pain in his boy’s eyes. “I know,” he finally said. “So do I.” He pulled his children in close and hugged them for all he was worth. When he finally let them go he smiled again, but shakily this time. “Come on, it’s time to say goodbye to your mother.” As he watched his children walk in front of him, he caught sight of a flicker of smile shared between them and watched Gwen squeeze her brother’s hand. It was then that he knew that through devastating loss and heart ache they could still be a family.
Entry TwoCatelyn Aubert was exploring. She had started out by playing hide and seek with her twin sister, Ellyn, in the woods by their home; but this was much more exciting. She had been the one hiding, but her attention had quickly been diverted by a butterfly which Catelyn had decided to follow. But that had all been hours ago, and now the fun, and excitement of adventuring and exploring was quickly wearing out. Looking up, Catelyn could see the sun was setting in the sky, and she knew it would soon be dark. The child was only nearing her fifth birthday, and she was quickly regretting running off from her twin. Catelyn did not like the dark, she wanted to go home, but she had no idea where she was, or how to get home. Stopping, she looked around, and bit her bottom lip as she felt it quivering. She could only see trees, there was no sign of her home. She felt tears welling up in her eyes, did anyone even know she was missing? After all, Catelyn did have a lot of brothers and sisters, perhaps her parents hadn’t even noticed she was missing. She slumped herself down by a tree, and hugged her knees close to her chest. Perhaps she would just be lost in these woods forever, by herself. It was then that Catelyn began to miss everyone, Ellyn, Esmae, Arthur, her parents, and even Alfie, even though he always annoyed her. She started to cry gently, and it was then she heard a noise in the distance. “Catelyn!” Brushing her tears on her sleeve, Catelyn scrambled to her feet, and sniffed back, looking around her. It was then she saw a figure through the trees, “Catelyn?” This time she recognised the voice and she sniffed back her tears again,
“Daddy?” She croaked and the figure turned around, and ran straight towards her. As soon as Griff Aubert reached his youngest daughter his arms were around her, holding her tightly. Catelyn couldn’t understand why she was still crying, but she hugged her father back, realising that she hadn’t been forgotten at all. Her father drew back from her and held her shoulders tightly,
“Catelyn, are you alright? We were all worried sick, what were you thinking running off like that?” Catelyn nodded, but she was still upset and her father drew her into his embrace, and held her scarlet hair against his chest,
“I’m sorry daddy, I didn’t mean to make you angry.” She whispered in a high pitched voice, and Griff bit his lip,
“You didn’t make me angry Catelyn, I was scared something had happened to you.” The young child just nodded, and wiped the last of her tears on her sleeve. Griff slipped his arms around Catelyn, and lifted her up with ease, giving her a soft smile, “Come on, let’s get you home.”

Arthur lies awake, while his wife lays in slumber, resting. His hand gently caresses her swollen stomach and he remembers the night she told him her news.
Arthur is glad that the blasted council meeting is over. He hasn’t seen his beautiful wife all day and he misses her.
Finally he arrives at their chambers and opens the door, only to see that there are candles alit all over the room, casting a wonderful glow about the place. He walks in closer and sees that Gwen is nowhere to be found.
“Guinevère,” he calls out and he hears her behind the screen, before she appears from the side, a little surprised.
“Oh I thought you were going to be longer,” she tells him a little disappointedly.
“Yes well, I thought it was time I saw my wife so I ended it early.” He smirks at her and walks closer giving her a kiss on her cheek. She smiles and he continues, “And now I’m glad I did for it looks like you have a surprise for me.”
Gwen blushes and nods, “Indeed I do, Husband.” She tells him before taking his hand and leading it to the table where they dinner is all set out. They sit down and eat while talking to each other pleasantly about their days. She is really good at prolonging her surprise and it’s not long till Arthur’s patience runs out and he asks her about it.
Gwen sighs and giggles a little at his impatience, before she stands up and sits herself on his lap. For a minute Arthur’s distracted with how beautiful she looks -- not that she does not always look beautiful -- but tonight she seems to have a glow about her. So he kisses the side of her neck, making her sigh before she pushes him away.
“Hey,” he complains before she sighs at him, “That was not my surprise.” She then gently picks up his hand and guides it to her stomach. Arthur looks at her confused and Gwen finds it totally adorable before she announces to him happily. “I’m pregnant.” Then she waits for his reaction. He looks shocked and Gwen is scared that he is not happy for he just stares at her. Her face falls a little and she turns her head away, too scared to look at him any longer. And then she feels his hand on the back of her neck, pulling her closer to him and his lips fall upon hers.
Eventually, they break apart and Arthur asks her, “Are you sure?” Gwen nods her head and Arthur pulls her in a hug.
They had been married for five years and while he was relieved that they were having a child, for Arthur what made him happy was that he was finally going to have a family -- a child of they own. And finally everything felt more complete.
