It had been a VERY long day. Merlin found himself juggling more jobs than before as well as having Cabal and Bohrs chase him for a good half hour around the castle grounds. He was meant to be exercising them! Not them exercising him! Then again Arthur had said he needed some muscle on him, and lately he was indeed looking more like ‘twiggy’ (as the Prince had christened him) than muscles.
Merlin was now slumped face down over the table and trying to gain some well-earned rest. He would hear Gauis would tut occasionally from where he was working. Merlin stayed face down on the table all the same. “Bench is on fire again” he mumbled without looking up “lafian” he briefly looked up towards the table, his eyes flashing gold for a few moments before resting his chin on his arms. “You’ve really got to stop setting things alight” he sighed.
“And you’ve really got to stop moaning Merlin” Gauis retorted and got a mop to clean up the water that Merlin had produced to extinguish the fire.
A knock at the door made them both look up and towards it. Merlin rose from the chair and headed over to the door, opening it and sticking his head out. His face turned into a grin when he was standing there and immediately he pulled the visitor into his embrace. “Mother!”

Arthur was hurrying towards Merlin, looking more like a man on a mission by the moment. This had to go right. This had to be the only way. Merlin knew he could do it. He had the power to heal Uther and that he would do. He wouldn’t let Arthur down – not this time. The conversation they’d had the night before had been heart breaking enough, without having to watch Arthur lose something of the same importance. That was why this alone was important to Merlin.
The Prince had already mounted his horse by the time Merlin had even finished saddling his own! "Come on, we've no time to waste,” Merlin quickly pulled himself onto his own horse, almost falling straight off the other side in an attempt to be quick. “I’m pretty sure an old man won’t have got far where we’re going” Merlin told him and straightened himself up. “What with all the hills and all”. Just trying to run down the corridors of the castle and escape the guards alone – last time – had proved to be tricky. He couldn’t wait to see the look on Arthur’s face though.
“Come on then carrot brain, we’re not going to get anywhere if we sit here on the horses all day” Merlin raised his brows. Dragoon was back in business!

Just as Merlin was considering calling it a night, Arthur appeared – he looked all warm and fuzzy (not that Merlin could tell what fuzzy even looked like) from the celebrations. Oh to be King and have everyone adore you. He’d got Arthur this far – that alone was a big achievement.
“I was…but I was just deciding on going to bed actually – mead makes my head funny” Merlin told him. He was exhausted by the events of the last week or so, Arthur –of course – wouldn’t know just how tired he was doing all the ‘background’ work and trying to make everything better. For Arthur it had got better, yes – but for Merlin the circumstances had got worse. He still blamed himself for Uther’s death, even if it was brought on by Morgana. But it was at Merlin’s hands.
Merlin scuffed the ground with his boot, unsure as to what to say next. “So…King eh? BIIIIIIIIIG responsibility”.

Ok, how had this happened?! One moment he was out picking things for Gauis and his disgusting remedies, the next thing that he knew, he was looking up at the trees as though he had shrunk! Merlin looked around him; there was no one in sight – just the birds and the breeze. Great. Here he was stuck in the forest as a midget. Well smaller actually.
All Merlin had done was go out that morning looking for whatever it was that the physician needed. Bored and wondering what other horrors Gauis had instore for him when he returned, Merlin knew he'd much rather be polishing some armour or shining a button on Arthur's jacket, than spending his morning stalking around the forest for plants. Next thing he knew he could feel something heavy slam into him, and then darkness. Coming around, Merlin had thought he was just lying on the ground, but found he couldn't stand. Well he could, but it was a funny kind of standing, as though he were crawling rather than...
Wait…
He looked down and studied his hands – THAT WERENT THERE! – Instead two black paws replaced where his hands should be. Oh no…
Merlin looked over his shoulder, that wasn’t exactly a shoulder, he could see a TAIL! No, no this wasn’t right. There was no way that he could’ve…that someone had…he craned his head around to try and look at the tail more closely, but ended up chasing it around in a circle. It was useless, not only had he shrunk in size but he was also an animal. And judging by the things that he’d already seen, it appeared that he’d turned into a puppy, and a small one at that. All he needed now was a mirror just to check exactly what kind of one he’d turned into – but Merlin was pretty sure that he was a puppy all the same.
“Gauis!” he called in the hope that this was some kind of joke. The name didn’t come out sounding like a name at all, it sounded like a bark! “Gauis!” he tried again, but still there was a bark sounding in his voice and no actual sign of the physician himself. Not that he could’ve got to the location where Merlin was as fast as Merlin himself had done. In fact he had no idea as to why he was calling Gauis at all.
He plonked himself down on the grass and sighed to himself. Great. He was alone, he was a puppy, and he needed to pee!

Merlin thought about what kind of privilege that Arthur was actually offering him. Respectable – yes his mother had always taught him to respect his elders, but Arthur wasn’t exactly that. Merlin was sure that he’d have a run in with the King sooner or later by the way that he was going. Hopefully nor under the circumstances of magical use. He’d have to be very careful about where he kept his magic book that Gauis had given him.
He was pretty sure that it was an honour, but it was one that he just didn’t want. Surely someone else who was dying for the job would have it. Then again if he didn’t take it, Gauis would be disappoint and would spend weeks on and on at him and making him feel guilty. Merlin didn’t want that and he didn’t want to let Gauis down. After all – Gauis was the one keeping a roof over his head now anyway.
His eyes looked up to Arthur, who seemed to be awaiting a response from him. “I will” he said, “and fine – I’ll be your manservant, as much as you despise the idea” he shrugged slightly, “and I guess I should say I’m sorry for trying to take a swing at you.” Merlin thought it best to start with a clean slate with Arthur. Even if the Prince didn’t want to.

Merlin smiled and gestured for the barmaid to bring the pair of them another couple of drinks when Gwaine wasn’t looking. “They’re not that bad – anyway I’m sure they’ll come out soon enough, it’s been quite tough lately”. Merlin wasn’t about to emphasise on what he meant but everyone had been working incredibly hard and most nights, he’d often get in and not even make it to the door of his room where he was so tired. Gauis would usually find him slumped down against the door frame the next morning and shake him awake.
“Why would I want to leave when there’s more drink? I’m pretty sure you couldn’t say no to another Merlin shot a knowing look at his friend as the barmaid brought over their drinks. “Anyway, one more won’t hurt, I don’t have to go back to Arthur and Gauis will most likely be snoozing away when I get in – plus, you look like you need help standing” he spied Gwaine’s expression that looked familiar. Drunk.
“Anyway I haven’t had the chance to ask, how is all this Knight business going? Is it all you imagined and more” he made a goofy face. He knew Gwaine had wanted to be a Knight and now he’d achieved his goal he seemed more than thriving from the whole aspect.

Merlin had to laugh, without him then yes –Arthur wouldn’t be looking as good as he was – but then again he couldn’t take all the credit. “I suppose, but I’m only taking some of the credit. His image isn’t that important to him, no matter how bad I make it out to sound”.
Him and Arthur? Similar? Merlin frowned. Yes they clashed on some subjects but he wouldn’t say that they were…ok yes, maybe they were both stubborn and sometimes didn’t listen to one another, but it was on their own instincts. “Well we have one thing in common then” he smirked at Brynn. Obviously she’d been observing the pair for quite a while now. “Arthur does as he pleases, I just…well I just throw in some ideas now and then.” Yes. A lot of ideas.
Lost in his thoughts of just how far he’d managed to get Arthur, he was pushed out of them by the Martin once again looking for dinner. At least it wasn’t his ankles; otherwise the goose would’ve been served to Arthur that evening. He laughed at Brynn’s little image in her head. There had been many awkward times with Gauis and animals that he didn’t wish t delve in. The vicious dog which he’d locked in his room when trying to help expose Knight Valiant, the leech tank…Merlin could go on but chose not to.
“What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, besides – there’s plenty more that I can collect when I go back to the castle” he told her, before throwing another mushroom towards Martin. By now the rest of Brynn’s geese were all eager to try some and had taken to fighting over it. “Gauis probably won’t miss a couple of mushrooms anyway; he’s far too busy setting his bench on fire.”

What would he have him do? What would he have him do! Merlin gave the prince a small smirk. “Well for a start, you can get off of your lazy ass and help me take back Camelot? Or you could sit here all day eating some stale bread and allowing Morgana to think that you’re not strong enough to win back what is rightfully yours?” harsh it sounded, but it was true. Arthur needed to come out of his weak and defeated depressive daze – he needed to be who he was going to become.
We. They. Them. All of them would fight the army – even if it seemed impossible. “Even villains have their weaknesses too” Merlin told him. He knew what he must do, but how to go about doing it? Well…he had no idea. “You need to do whatever it takes. Eradicate the source of her power or something” Merlin shrugged as though he had no idea what he was talking about himself. “We can’t do it in just this small group – we need to get inside that castle and down to the dungeon’s where they are holding the knights. You know what Lucan’s like – one whiff of rebellion and he’s the first in line, and I’m pretty sure that Leon wants to see Morgana’s crown knocked off as much as anyone else here does.” Merlin had to make Arthur see that his Knights were loyal to him and Uther. And only them.
Then there came the ‘what if’s’. “Don’t think like that” Merlin shook his head, “Gwen’s strong enough to look after herself and the others…” he trailed off. Morgana may have just got to some of the Knights already, but Merlin pushed these thoughts to the back of his mind. “…they are just as strong, besides – they wouldn’t have gone down without a fight and we would know about by now.”

The Prat wanted to reason with him? Merlin wanted to laugh some more. This had to be a complete joke. “The feeling’s mutual” he answered when Arthur said that he didn’t like it any more than Merlin did. Merlin didn’t like it at all – not one bit. Merlin sighed. Gauis would think better of him should he actually agree with Arthur on something. The old man wasn’t best pleased when he’d visited earlier, more disappointed. How on earth could Merlin’s destiny be entwined with Arthurs? He just didn’t understand it. He hoped that the dragon had it wrong. That he was supposed to protect someone else. But magic was very powerful and there were times when it would never lie.
“What kind of understanding?” he finally asked.
So this was how it was going to be? Merlin and Arthur, Arthur and Merlin. Two sides of a same coin. What Merlin didn’t know was that this was the start of something far greater than the dragon had anticipated. The start of a hazy and unusual friendship.

Merlin smirked at Arthur’s comment about being a bold and foolish manservant. It was true, yes, but then again Arthur didn’t know just how much he needed him. Not that Merlin was blowing his own trumpet or anything. He nodded, “I couldn’t let you go off all on your own, who knows what might have happened. For a start you don’t exactly sit pretty on a horse, for all I know you could’ve broken your neck, and then what?” he joked before turning serious, “anyway…I wanted to”.
With the conversation now turned once again to Balinor, Arthur was throwing out what he’d do should they actually find him. What would Merlin himself do? He didn’t really know in all honesty. Probably stand there and gawp like an idiot, letting Arthur do all the talking. “I’m not really good with words” he shrugged, “I’d just stand there and keep my mouth shut while you tell him about it all”. He paused briefly before looking across to Arthur. “But if I was? Then I’d ask him if he had a heart before asking for his help”
There was no point in seeking help from someone neither cared for Camelot nor the amount of lives at stake. Merlin would try again single handed if he had to – and even take drastic measures just to keep them all alive. He just hoped that the journey they were both making wasn’t a wasted one – especially with Arthur and the way he was. He was such a stubborn ass that Merlin just wanted him to stop and rest – even if it were for a few moments. But no. That was Arthur all over. Not giving up until he put himself into a comatose state.
“Are you sure that your wound is alright? It doesn’t look too good from where I’m sitting and neither do you…you look…pasty, milky even” he said trying to think up suitable descriptions to sum up Arthur’s complexion. “In fact, I might just think up a new nickname for you – personally milky sounds stupid, but snowy…I quite like that. Snowy.”

The words had rung clear and true all day. ‘Long Live The King’. Arthur was King, now was the time that everyone had been waiting for – including Merlin himself. The circumstances that had surrounded and brought on this whole event had not yet left his mind, but as Arthur had said to him before. It was a new day. And a new day meant knew challenges for them all to face.
Merlin wasn’t going to admit it to Arthur, but he was proud of him and what he had achieved. Yes Arthur had unknowingly had his help along the way – some ‘help’ that Merlin wished he could forget about – but everything had been down to Arthur’s decisions and strong judgement. His friend seemed to be currently embracing his new found status with such a calm manner that Merlin surprised that he hadn’t been nervous before hand. Arthur had always said that he never got nervous but Merlin now knew him better than anyone else. Even if Arthur had been nervous before the coronation – would have never had admitted it to Merlin.
He was currently leant up against the wall casually in a quiet corner, whilst friends and courters around him laughed and drank until they were merry. It was a joyous occasion and one that Merlin himself should be taking advantage of – but there was always the threat of something happening, and Merlin needed to make sure that nothing did. He watched as people danced and smiled to himself. Who knew what tomorrow would bring? Tagged: Arthur Pendragon Timeline: S4 Setting: Great Hall – Mid Afternoon[/color]

Ok, this was going to work. Merlin would make this work for Arthur. For Camelot. As much as he knew of the risk that he was taking, he was determined to make Arthur see that magic could be used for good – rather than the wrongs that Arthur had seen during his lifetime. Today Merlin would turn himself back to eighty years old and help Arthur to heal his father. He could change Camelot for the better if Arthur was willing to receive his help (which by the sounds of it – he really was).
After having some sort of heart to heart with the Prince the night before, Merlin knew he had to help. Had it have been his own father, he would’ve tried every way possible to save him, and Merlin wished he could have done more when his father died. Now they were riding to find the ‘sorcerer’ who lived in the forests. Merlin remembered the charcoal makers’ cottage in the forest, It was perfect as now it was uninhabitable and Merlin could easily sneak round the back to change himself without Arthur noticing. Of course he’d have to come up with something so that Arthur didn’t suspect, but he’d cross that bridge when he came to it.
He’d now prepared the horses and was waiting for Arthur to appear so as they could ride out and track down the sorcerer. “It’s a big day today” he told the horse and stroked its mane; the horse butted Merlin lightly with its head, as though it were responding. Merlin patted it’s back and waited. It was a big day, everything that happened would be once again on his shoulders, and he was prepared to mess it up. Merlin thought about Gwaine’s question for a while. Yes, what would the likelihood be? He’d never seen any of the other Knight’s in a tavern, mostly because Merlin himself never really spent any time there. He thought of a few Knights and then looked to Gwaine.
“Some of them might come out? I know that Lucan sometimes likes a drink and I’m sure that Sir Leon wouldn’t say no” he replied, “What about Percival? You two seem to have formed some sort of brotherly bond since you were knighted?” Come to think of it, there were quite a few knights who might actually go to the tavern more than Merlin thought. The atmosphere within the castle had lightened now that Camelot was getting itself back together.
Merlin liked having all the newest Knights around and he had seen first hand of what they were capable of. “Anyway, you should ask them – you train with them, patrol with them, so what’s drinking with them going to do?” apart from make them very merry that was.

No matter how much Brynn was right – Merlin knew he had to keep his head about this. “I pretty much just pass him his sword and clean his socks” Merlin shrugged, “even on our ‘adventures’” he gave a small chuckle, “the only achievement I have is getting the armour so shiny that Arthur can see his face in it – no, there’s pretty much nothing I’ve done that can be considered that” he told her. Apart from saving Arthur’s butt from everything that was thrown at him.
Merlin sat down on Brynn’s suggestion. He was pleased to see that she was getting back to her life after everything that had gone on. “Ah, I suppose I can’t complain really – Arthur’s a good king, and I didn’t think that I’d ever say this but, he’s a good friend too – even if he doesn’t listen to me when he should”. He shot a knowing look towards Brynn and grinned. “I’m glad Alex is well – everyone’s been working so hard, I haven’t seen Gauis as much as I usually do and that’s saying something!”
Merlin shifted slightly to get more comfortable and looked out over the fields. “Everything’s changing Brynn – for the better. “He smiled to himself then noticed out of the corner of his eye, mad martin sticking his beak into the basket. “Hey!” he took the basket away and pulled out what Martin was hunting for, throwing it so that the goose could waddle away and eat it in peace.

Arthur needed to wake up and smell the daisies; clearly he needed to learn that he wouldn’t always get what he wanted – even if he was the prince. “Oh goodie” Merlin droned at Arthur’s comment. Of course he’d be living on scraps for a while, this wasn’t an inn. He was surprised that Gauis’ words hadn’t yet come true – about a worse outcome this time. He’d already been in the dungeons once for trying to punch Arthur, Merlin knew that he could win a fight with him standing on his head with the help of his friend ‘magic’ of course, but he wasn’t about to turn Arthur into a toad and step on him – no matter how desirable that sounded. No he’d let the Prince stew for a while . Merlin actually laughed out loud at Arthur’s next comment. “Ha! Jealous? Of you? “ he asked. That was laughable, “why would I be jealous of a spoil prince who likes nothing better than to push others around?” it was true. Merlin would never swap places with Arthur if his life depended on it – for a start he wasn’t a prat and secondly – he was better looking.
“So what now?” he asked, “I’m sure you’d love the idea of having me flogged again or even lopping off my head”

Merlin was currently stewing from the conversation that he and Gauis had earlier. He was still sat in his corner with a numb back and behind, if he ever got out of this one alive then he wouldn’t be walking for a week. Prince Prat was most likely staking about the castle and moaning to everyone about how much he hated Merlin – Merlin didn’t care, the feeling was mutual.
The sound of the door opening was enough to make him look up from his spot on the floor. He was expecting Gauis, but instead got the bad end of the deal. Arthur. Coming to gloat obviously – the look on his face said it all.
"Had a pleasant day then Merlin?"
“Yeah...Fantastic” Merlin replied with a sarcastic drawl, “The bread and water they sent down was…well it was delicious” he gave Arthur a dorky thumbs up and leant back against the wall. If Arthur wanted another showdown then he’d happily give it to him. Gauis had practically told him that this time would be very different so what was the point. “and how was your day sire? Full of girls and glory as always?” he asked, Judging by Arthur’s expression – it was certainly a day in the life…

“Err…yeah” yes, he’d go with that answer about Arthur and Gauis. “Well I wouldn’t say it was an adventure” he fiddled with his scarf uncomfortably, “more of a duty than anything”. The whole showdown of taking back Camelot had been just that – everyone had gone that extra mile to ensure that it was won back to the right person.
He couldn’t help but notice how Brynn’s hand travelled up to her shoulder. She was reliving painful memories of that time, obviously. Merlin frowned slightly, “but have you recovered?” he asked. Being out here alone may have helped Brynn in some respect but sometimes it was always best to open up about the things troubling you. Merlin did that all the time. To Gaius, Gwen, the dragon – and on a few occasions, Arthur. He smiled when she mentioned Alex – hopefully his presence was helping Brynn. Merlin had seen the servant a couple of times, but everyone was so rushed off of their feet that there was no time to stop and have a chat. “How is Alex? I've barely seen anyone since…” he trailed off, “…yeah…”
Merlin looked to Brynn. It was strange seeing how everything that had happened had changed everyone’s lives. “you do know you can always talk to me don’t you? Besides…Arthur bores me enough so it’s nice to have someone to complain to. Gauis doesn’t even listen anymore” He smirked.

He froze when Uther demanded where Gwen was. The king usually paid very little attention to him (except the times when he’d ended up in the stocks and had covered Arthur’s back on occasions) but it seemed as though he was now wary of anyone unfamiliar who entered into the room.
“She had other duties to attend to sire” He said, not quite knowing if this was true or not, or what ‘duties’ she’d actually gone to perform. “Gauis only sent me to deliver your sleeping draft, that’s it” he shrugged. “I can always go and find Gwen if you want?” he pointed to the door.
Merlin could hear faint sounds – the same he’d heard the previous evening when they’d explored the town that had been slaughtered by the ‘faceless’ ghosts. He hoped Gauis was ok – he was out making the last of the day’s deliveries and wasn’t exactly the fastest of people. Merlin had never even seen him run. The sounds were coming closer now, Merlin edged to the side of the room. He remembered the light had repelled them before, so perhaps it could do so again. His magic was useless so he couldn’t use it in front of the King anyway, even if he wanted to.
An ear piercing scream broke his thoughts as the same ‘ghost’ appeared from nowhere and headed straight in the direction of the king. Merlin sprang into action, grabbing one of the lit torches from its place on the wall and running to shield Uther. He waved the torch in the direction of the creature until it left them well alone; Merlin knew that they would be back, and in numbers. Something needed to be done and fast – yes Gauis would know about them, but how to defeat them was a different matter. Merlin turned around. “Are you alright sire?”

Merlin hoped that any negative thoughts would disappear from his mind. If the ride was that long then that would give him enough time to contemplate and think up a plan b. he didn’t think that Arthur had one anyway – apart from returning to Camelot and fighting until the death. He couldn’t let that happen. Not now. Not after how far they had come together.
“I know we will” Merlin told him, if anyone needed an ego massage at the moment then it was Arthur. “Because we have you, and the Knights”. He almost wanted to throw up at the cheesiness of the line but if he couldn’t take on a dragon with magic, then hopefully there was some hope with what they had left. Even if it had cost them some well-trained men already.
Merlin felt very much like he had a split personality of the subject at the moment. It was all well and good, but he knew now he needed to focus, just like Arthur had told him to. "I suppose I can't send you back to Camelot on your own. You'll get yourself killed," he was now saying. A small smile tugged at Merlin’s lips. “Oh, you have no idea”. With that he tugged on the reins of his horse and the pair of them moved on. “What will you do?” he called back to Arthur, “if we find Balinor?” Merlin knew what he had to do, but if Arthur went about this the wrong way (which he very much doubted) then all would be lost.

No one ever saw the King nowadays. Since Morgana’s failed attempt to unleash a reign of tyranny across Camelot, the King had taken to secluding himself in his chambers. Often Merlin would see Gwen going in or coming out from the room, she’d taken to caring for him – but insisted that it was for Arthur. He smiled at the thought, dear Gwen – always so kind hearted. Everything was a blur to Merlin. Some days went so quickly he could hardly remember what he’d done or whether he’d eaten. Both Arthur and Gauis had him all over Camelot with various tasks, so he was always kept busy by something.
In his hands, Merlin clasped a vial. Gauis had given him strict instruction to take it to the king that morning, as he was making his rounds in the town. Merlin wondered what on earth could possibly be in it. Morgana’s sleeping potions had never looked like that. He was straying cautiously towards the King’s chambers now. Merlin didn’t know what to expect, for he hadn’t laid eyes on Uther for a while.
His fist connected with the door, giving a small knock before Merlin pushed it open and walked in slowly. The room had a cold feel to it, even if it was a warm day. Then again The King had never been one for sunshine, rainbows and puppies. “Sire…Gauis asked me to bring you your remedy” he shifted awkwardly to the table by the bed. All he had to do was set it down and leave, but Merlin couldn’t help but look at the King. He barely recognised him. It was like a shell, and empty shell that was still.
Now he had to leave as he knew he’d outstayed his welcome. Merlin headed towards the door and glanced back at Uther one more time. Merlin still couldn’t help feeling a little sorry for him, even though he shouldn’t. Uther was still human, and human’s had souls. Morgana had already destroyed Uther’s so it seemed, but how many more would it take before she was finally satisfied?
