Merlin looked down as her fingers brushed his, before looking back at her and smiling. It was then he decided that perhaps he should make this moment a bit more special. The blossom from the trees were swirling around in the air slightly before falling carelessly to the ground. He put up his hand, "chorgléo" he murmered as the blossom slowly started to take the form of a woman dancing, spinning and twirling around in the air in front of them.
Merlin looked to Freya and grinned, remembering when he'd made the lights of the candles float and dance in the air. The blossom woman continued to dance across the air, before changing into a horse - and one that was galloping. Merlin slowly lowered his hand and the blossom exploded sending a shower of it down upon the pair of them. He laughed slightly and shook his hair to shake some of the blossom from it. "That wasn't meant to happen like that" he told her sheepishly.
He looked down to where her hand was resting, slowly moving his across and placing it on top of hers. "I won't leave you" he told her, "Not until I have to." By which he meant that she would have to return to the lake. "I promise."

Half an hour? That was hardly enough time, but he supposed he had to make every minute moment count. After all, he wanted to see her again and he had got his wish. “You…you want me to leave?” Merlin looked back at her. He quickly shook his head, "No...no, no - I just...forget what I said.." he quickly brushed his earlier words off, realising that he was stumbling over them as much as he was trying to get them out.
"Are you hungry?" he asked and smiled knowingly at her, "I could always find some strawberries?" Yes. Strawberries would do nicely. They would always remind him of Freya. "Ooooor..."he plucked some bread from the basket he'd been carrying, "There's always this...it's not much but, well y'know" He shrugged, a little embarassed. He was acting just like he had done when he first met her. He half expected Gauis to yell at him tonight when he was wandering around humming again. The last time Merlin had done that he'd irritated the physician so much that he'd been forced to sit down.
"If we have only half an hour, then im going to make this the best half an hour ever" He grinned at her and passed her some bread. "You can have anything you want...Just say".

Merlin was becoming a little worried now. She was having trouble breathing, just like a fish out of water. Obviously the large adjustment to her environment was impacting on her body. She'd been in the lake for a couple of years, and now she was back on dry land. That transition would be a very hard one to make. “It’s….it’s difficult,” she was now trying to say. Merlin quickly shook his head. "Don't try to talk if it hurts..." however she carried on, “I’m not used to leaving….Just give me a moment….”
So she could leave the lake? How? When? Why? There were so many things that Merlin wanted to ask, yet Freya was still so very fragile. It all seemed to start to piece together in Merlin's head now. Freya could leave the lake to some extent. He wanted to know how long for. It seemed clear that it caused her some pain when doing so, and Merlin didn't want that. Not when she could have more time to grow stronger and adjust to her surroundings. Well, if she could. Everything was still so hazy to him and he was also becoming a little overwhelmed. She was still there, with him. But then again she wasn't. It was oh so confusing.
He sighed sadly, "Freya...if it gives you that much pain then perhaps you're not ready to leave yet." he looked at her, "Do you know how much time you have left?"

She looked weak, and it pained Merlin to see her like that again. "Freya?" he asked, taking her hands to steady her. She looked as though she was about to collapse! "Freya? How...how are you even here?" he asked, laughing a little with disbelief. He was more glad she was actually there with him physically.
“I….I’ve missed you.” he saw her close her eyes. It was as though she was fighting something or other.
"I've missed you too" he murmered and squeezed her hand, "Are you alright?" he asked gently. There was something not quite right about this. For one, Freya was actually on land with him, and two? Well...she looked like she was putting up a struggle with herself to stay there. "What's wrong?" he asked, cupping her face in his hands and looking worriedly at her.
Merlin bit his lip. He prayed that he wouldn't lose her all over again. She'd been so happy when she'd appeared to him last, and Merlin - no matter how surprised he'd been at the time - had been relieved to see her too.

Merlin had watched as the rose had sunk. He could feel the lump in his throat slowly shifting its way upwards. He hoped and hoped that she would know just how much that was for her. He sat back down by the edge of the lake, staring, wishing....waiting...hoping. He just wished that he could see her again. She wasn't like anyone he'd ever met. She had been more. So much more than that. At one point there was a time where he could have called her his own - before she'd gone that was.
Merlin had thought about her often after he'd sent off the funeral barge. The countless hours he'd spent shut away in his room looking for a spell that might just have allowed him to glimpse her one last time. There was nothing, and he had been angry at that.
It was only after he had launched the book across the room in frustration that the thought had waggled it's way into his head. Had he been in love with her? Merlin had no idea what love felt like. When he had been with Freya he'd felt free to be himself, anythng and anyone. There was no need to hide and no secrets to be kept. And he'd also kissed her, a couple of times acually. He'd regretted not doing so as she lay in his arms by the lake. There were so many things he wished he could have said to her. But he had to resort to speaking to the water instead in a hope that she would actually hear.
Merlin then realised that he was poking the ground so much with a stick that he'd now made a small hole. He looked up and around before back at the ground, but then did a double take.
No...no, it...it couldn't be...
She was there. On the shore? But how? Was that even possible to do that? Merlin stumbled to his feet, almost tripping up as he hurried towards her.
It was her. It was really her. Freya. His Freya.
He could feel the water prickling the back of his eyes slightly. "Freya?" he breathed, venturing towards her, with a grin that was starting to broaden across his lips.

She was right. Gwen always was. It wasn't in Arthur's nature to ask for something like that back, whether it had been his mothers or not. He nodded sadly, "Alright..." Merlin really couldn't think of anything to say. The situation was so delicate and so unfairly deserved that he just wanted to shout at Arthur about everything that he'd witnessed. With Lancelot, Agravaine - everything that had caused this to happen.
Merlin saw the tears fall from her eyes again as he produced the letter and told her what to do. "This is more then I deserve." At this he shook his head. "You need somewhere to go - I couldn't live with myself if I just watched you walk off with no path....You've been hurt enough, and it wasn't even your fault." He choked, "Please" he begged, "Stay there...not just for a little while but until I have said - I couldn't face hearing from my mother that you had left. I wouldn't be able to find you - Please Gwen, for me." He knew that Gwen was headstrong and would most likely choose to leave after a week or two, but Merlin had to know she was safe, for his sake, her own and Arthurs.
"You've been the best friend anyone could ever ask for Merlin. Especially to me. Especially to Arthur." He bit his lip and looked away, trying to hide his emotions from Gwen. He didn't want to upset her further. "Please..." this came out rather hoarse, "Please...don't go - Arthur will change his mind, I know he will, then you can stay." He looked back at her hopefully. "I love you. You've been there for me so many times. You will always be my brother, Merlin. Always." At this, Merlin shook his head, refusing to believe that he was about to let Gwen just up and leave Camelot because of some mistake.
"I love you too Gwen, Im so glad that I can actually call you Sister." Feeling the lump in his throat rise, Merlin stepped forward and pulled her into a hug. A few silent tears welling up in his eyes.

Gauis had sent Merlin out that afternoon for, well? what else? Herbs! That was all Merlin had appeared to do lately and on top of that, run around after Arthur who was acting King. With Uther still in low spirits and keeping to his room, Arthur was now on a journey to what Merlin knew would be the height of his position. Despite not legally gaining the title, the Prince was certainly more of a King now than Merlin would've ever thought of him.
Merlin had decided that this afternoon he would pay another visit to the Lake of Avalon, purely for the fact that he would come here sometimes to clear his head. He would talk to Freya in the hope that she would hear him, whether it would just be ranting about Arthur or if he wasn't sure of what choice to make. He would try to make his visits frequent, but as he was in demand then they wouldn't be as frequent as he would have liked them to be. Freya had been the only one who he could actually relate to - in both terms of magic (and what it felt like to be different) and affection.
There were so many things that they could have done had she not have left him. It had been a nice surprise to see her and listen to her advice when they had been hiding out from Morgana and her army, but there had not been much time for them both. She would always hold a special place in Merlin's heart though, which is why he would sometimes come and talk to the lake. To her. He hadn't yet really let go of her.
He sat down and sighed, looking out onto the lake. At least he wouldn't be disturbed here, and the only witnesses he had when talking to himself were the birds and woodland animals. "I told you that i would be back" he chuckled and ran a hand through his hair, knowing that he probably sounded mad. "Gauis has me running around on errands again. I guess...well, I guess I just needed some time to myself". He shook his head, "I'm probably boring you with me moaning about what Arthur and Gauis put me through, I bore myself! But...I guess it's just nice to come here and know that you're here...listening." he finished and looked down at the dirt, tracing circles in it He hoped he was right, and that she was listening, because all that he had left of her now was his belief, and as strong as it was - it saddened him to know that she wasn't there anymore.
Merlin clasped his hands together, "BlĂłstma" he murmered and opened them. It had been the same spell that he'd cast when he'd been trying to conjur up some strawberries for Freya. Except, he'd produced a rose. He stood up, clutching the flower in his hand and walked down to the edge of the lake, setting the rose down so it floated on the water. "Astyre" he muttered putting his hand out, and guiding the rose along the top of the water before it finally sank into the depths of the lake.
Hopefully Freya would know that it was for her. It was all for her.

It had only just now decided to rain as Merlin was hurrying along street, ipod on full blast and dodging various pedestrians, including one little old lady who had almost run him down on her motorised scooter. He was on his way to Arthur's and technically should've been there half an hour ago, but once again he'd overslept and was woken by Gauis hammering on the door and telling him to get out of bed, and to also turn the deafening music, that his alarm so gratefully provided, down. Breakfast had, like always, been eaten whilst walking out of the door. Merlin really wasn't a cereal person and always opted for toast or a couple of pop tarts depending on his mood.
He pulled the collar of his jacket up against the rain that was now falling harder. Even his ipod was now playing some miserable song, just like where his mood was heading right that very moment. He wished that he could've just stayed on the bus, and that Arthur didn't actually live too far from him. Oh well, Why Arthur couldn't have just gone to his was another story. It would've made life easier. Then again, Gauis would have them both cleaning the fish tank and Merlin could only take so much of the old man until he had to either shut himself in his room, or leave the house and escape to Arthurs.
The private road that led to Arthur's house was quite missable, so much that Merlin had now actually walked past it and had to turn back. He knew the code to get through the gates, that surrounded the large house. Merlin didn't know why Uther Pendragon needed such a big place for just three of them - the three being Uther, Arthur and Morgana. Then again he was technically a millionaire, so Merlin guessed it came with the lifestyle. Catching his breath, he pressed the doorbell, hoping that Arthur was indeed still in bed and had forgotton that he was coming round today. Merlin switched his ipod off and pulled the headphones from his ears, waiting for someone to answer the door.
He was soaked, oh well - that would teach him for being late in the future, a towel would be quite nice right now - oh and some straightners for his hair. He huddled under the porch a little more to protect himself, a smoothie was definatly in order when Arthur finally let him in.

Merlin shook his head at her words. "You are not to blame for all of this, don't ever think that Gwen." he told her, "Arthur will come around, im sure that he will - he can't live without you, and anyone can see that."
Merlin uncovered what Gwen had just given him. Arthur's mother's ring. He looked down at it and then back to Gwen. "If he hasn't asked for it back then that must mean that he still cares?" Merlin wondered out loud and covered the ring back up. "If you want me to give it to him - then I will". He wondered how on earth Arthur would react to that. He'd already decided that having Gwen leave would 'help' him to move on but Merlin suspected that wasn't the case.
"Take care of him. Keep him safe? Keep YOU safe!"
Merlin half laughed and half cried at the same time. "Don't worry Gwen, i'll make sure that he's safe - I promise." he murmered and put the ring in his pocket, exchanging it for a letter, pressing it into Gwens hands. "Go to my mother's and stay there until I send word. I've explained everything in the letter, so you've no need to relay anything to her that will upset you." he looked at his friend desperatly, "In the meantime I'll speak to Arthur and make him see the biggest mistake that he's just made. I know he's already regretting his actions Gwen, I can see the pain in his eyes, I just need to convince him that you shouldn't be punished like this." Merlin was thankful that the penalty hadn't gone with the tradition of adultery. Death.
Merlin ran a hand through his hair. "my mother won't judge you, but promise me now that you'll go straight to Ealdor and stay there like I told you."

He'd sat there for hours. Too many hours in his opinion. Still he felt numb and being numb gave his body no chance of movement whatsoever - well apart from running his hands through his hair out of frustration a few times. Why? Just why? and Why was the only question.
He finally saw Gwen's door open, and her emerge, throwing a few things onto the cart before pulling it out from the side of her house and into the street. Merlin rose suddenly feeling his body act on impulse again. He had to see her, to stop her or at least convince her that there was still hope - whether she wanted to believe it or not. He did. He knew for a fact that without Guinevère, there was only a half of Arthur that remanined, and that the other half was now turning back to look at him.
Merlin gave her a painful look. She had to pull her own cart.
He half expected her to at least come to him, but instead she turned and started pulling the cart down the quiet street, where no one could see her or witness the humiliation. Merlin took a few steps forward and was just about to call her name when she suddenly stopped and walked back to him. He gave her a smile, but instead that was turned to confusion when he noticed something in her hand.
"I kn---" Merlin quickly fumbled through his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief and passed it to her. Biting back a few tears himself. He didn't want Gwen to see him cry. "I know I have no right to ask you for a favor . . . . but might I?"
"You've no need to ask" he told her, "I'd do anything for you Gwen - anything at all." He was telling the truth, "If there was anyway that I could've stopped this from happening then I would've done. I tried to convince Arthur to see that this is some kind of mistake - that you still love him and that he still loves you, but he wouldn't listen to me." he shook his head and shrugged as though he had no clue why Arthur had chosen not to listen. "I tried Gwen...really, I did."

This was wrong, it was wrong - it was all wrong. If Agravaine and Morgana hadn't have got Gwen and Arthur into this mess then they would be celebrating on the eve of their wedding.
He shouldn't be here. His feet hadn't stopped him from walking right to her door though. He hadn't the courage to knock, and she wouldn't have wanted to see him anyway. Everyone had turned their backs on her. He hadn't. Guinevère was his friend, the most loyal and humble and that anyone could ask for.
So why couldn't he just knock on her door and tell her that?
Because he was scared that she would push him away, tell him to remember her. Merlin didn't want to remember. He wanted his friend. He wanted to see her everyday like he always did. He wanted to talk to her, confide in her - even rant to her about Arthur making him do the most horrendous jobs he could find for him. They couldn't have it anymore, no matter how much Merlin wanted it. He didn't believe that all ties had been cut loose. They were still going strong in his mind. He tried raising his fist to the door, but found that it would just fall limply to his side. After a while he gave in, choosing to sit and wait.
To sit and ponder
To sit and mourn
"There is just one thing, you don't have too but . . . remember me." Merlin shook his head as her words echoed. 'No' he almost choked quietly to himself, but managed to supress any hurt, anger or pain that he was feeling right now.
How could he have not stopped this? Once again his own judgement (and somewhat lack of it) had let him down - and now people were hurt, again. He should've just come straight out with it and raised his suspicions about Lancelot to Arthur. But no - he'd been too much of an idiot to even do that!
Merlin looked over from where he was sitting, to Gwen's door again, knowing that he could never bring himself to knock.

"It never hurts to learn properly Merlin. You do need a reminder in how to polish a sword after all. I trust George to be thorough and diligent in teaching you so." Over his dead body! Merlin wasn't ever spending another hour with George again - he'd rather be savaged by wild dogs! "No, no way is he teaching me how to polish, you already know that I can do that so you can see your face in that armour!" Merlin really wasn't going to allow Arthur to have the satisfaction this time. No way. Not now or ever - he was welcome to George.
Threaten? Threaten? He was serious! "I mean it" he told Arthur, "and i'd glady take that option if it were a choice of being with George and that." he argued back. "There is no way that you can make me spend the rest of the week with George, because if you do then im going back to Ealdor." No doubt that Arthur wouldn't believe him, but perhaps the look on Merlin's face right now would make him think twice. "Like I said, I hope this teaches you a lesson. Well, one of many since George is planning to teach you quite a few,"
At this Merlin began to become little angry. "Fine, if he's that great then make him your man servant, but im not being made to spend everyday with him for something that I didn't even do!" He referred to Gauis' lie about the tavern. "I quit" he said casually and folded his arms. "I quit - so there, go and run to George and tell him the good news"

He rolled his eyes at Arthur's comment and then looked down at his goblet, swirling the liquid around a little. "I am not an alcoholic" he told Arthur stubbornly, "and i don't drink that much - and I didn't spend two days in the tavern." he emphasised to show Arthur that he really wasn't who Gauis was painting him to be.
A small groan escaped Merlin's lips. "ergh, but they're so pointy and fussy to polish" he replied, "can't you just not wear one and say that your big head wouldn't even allow it to fit?" Merlin drank the rest of his drink down and leant back casually against the wall, watching Arthur's expression and smirking. At least now he could still joke despite the change of rank. Merlin had thought that his friend would change ever so suddenly with the death of Uther, but was pleasantly surprised when he'd emerged from the hall after a night of moarning his father , and had said that it was a new day. It had been, and Arthur had seemed to have done a lot of thinking that night. Merlin had just slept outside the door waiting for him. He knew his role, he knew his duty. It had been a new day, but the same Arthur.
"I might go for a walk soon, being in here with a room full of drunken knights and nobleman is putting me on edge" he shifted himself from the wall and turned to Arthur. "And you know what i'm like when I have soooooooooooo many friends offer me drinks" he chuckled.

Merlin woke early the next morning - well, defining 'woke', it was more like Gauis dragging him from his bed and telling him to get up and have some breakfast. That was when Merlin remebered that he had Arthur to attend to! He jumped up, threw on some clothes - almost strangling himself with his scarf as he tied it whilst trying to shovel some breakfast into his mouth. "Merlin, really?" Gauis winced at the scene unfolding, "You're hardly late". Merlin turned to him. "I am NOT becoming Arthur's target practice because im late, now I need to get down to the training field, although I really have a bad feeling about this." He raced to the door and skidded out, before poking his head back in. "Oh, and if you could get me some warm water ready for all the bruises im going to get then that would be great!".
Merlin raced down the hallways and outside. He could already see some people on the field and quickly hurried towards them. One of then, unfortunatly, was Arthur. "Im...sorry..." he panted as he finally arrvied, "I...the stairs...they..." Oh forget it - Arthur wouldn't believe him if he said that he was dying let alone excuse his lateness this morning. Merlin straightened himself up and clapped his hands together. "Soooooooooooooooo, what's on the agenda for today?"
He really didn't have to ask, because he already knew what Arthur had in store for him. Hell.

Merlin was pretty sure that Morgana wouldn't be returning to Camelot for a family reunion anytime soon. She was bitter and cold and now Merlin seemed to be number 1 on her hate list after all that had gone on. "No, it's too dangerous - Arthur wouldn't want you putting yourself in danger sire. Camelot needs you here." Merlin agreed. With Uther in the state that he was, Morgana would seize the opportunity to break him even more.
Merlin could feel a small laugh tugging at his lips. "Sadly. I have no idea what he sees in you. He does well fighting...ruling...poorly with servants." with that he shook his head. "Believe me, if i knew why then i'd tell you myself" Sometimes Merlin did wonder why Arthur kept him around, but he also knew that without one another, they were both lost. Two sides of the same coin. "I guess...I guess I just understand him" he shrugged, "about his choices and stuff...." he trailed off. Having a conversation with Uther so openly like this was awkward enough.
CLANG!
Merlin saw the King toss the water aside quite unexpectedly. What on earth? Did he always have outbursts such as this? Should he call Gwen? He was now being accused of trying to kill him! "I don't know what you're talking about" Merlin looked at him a little shocked, "Believe me sire, if anyone was trying to kill you then they'd have to cross Arthur, myself and the knights first. Trust me - I don't want to kill you." He looked at Uther calmly and with truthful eyes. There had been a time when the dragon had told Merlin that Uther's time to die had come. Merlin had prevented it - knowing that the King deserved anything but that.
"You're tired sire, you need to rest " he stated, "Which is why Gauis told me to bring you your sleeping draft" Merlin could be going round in circles trying to explain this to the King. "Would you like me to get Gauis himself?" he asked, perhaps then Uther would trust his old friend if he had not gained Merlin's trust yet.

Merlin shot Arthur a shocked look, "Hey! I like cheese! And bread for that matter....mmmmmm cheese and bread - I could really use some of that now" he remebered that Gauis had packed them a stash of food for the journey, although neither had bothered to delve into it yet.
He could see Arthur's face again, when he spoke about seeing a god in the mirror, and was quite offended when he begged to differ."Then you were clearly dreaming. Either that, or Gaius needs to check your eye sight," Merlin glared at this, "my eyesight is perfectly avaerage thanks, how's yours? Oh that's right, delerious...because you're getting kind of chubby there" "Alright then. Let's look at the facts Merlin. Fact one, I will beat you senseless with my mace if you keep talking like that." Merlin poked fun at him and then sighed. "Alright i'll stop with the fat jokes - I know how sensative you are, speaking of which...when's lunch?" But no, Arthur was now on one of his 'Lets put Merlin down in so many ways' rambles. "Here's another fact. You can barely move in chain mail and armor. So when I do beat you mercilessly, then you will have no protection nor the agility to move."
"Hey! if you remeber rightly I was very good when you were whacking me around the head with a mace!" he defended himself, "And fact number three." Merlin rolled his eyes, "of course, there's always a three" he muttered. "You're an idiot." Merlin looked to Arthur, "Are you quite finished with insulting every little thing about me?" he asked, not waiting for Arthur to even answer, "good, now shut up and find a spot to stop, you're eating even if i have to force it down your throat." If Arthur wouldnt let him look at his wound, then he'd sure as hell eat lunch.

Merlin couldn't quite make out what Uther was saying, as he was speaking of all different things at once. Moragana, Morgause, enemies. Wow, he had really been shaken by the whole thing. Merlin listened to him, piecing together what he could. He swallowed - he knew having to lie to the king could get him in trouble, but if it lifted his spirits then what harm could it do?
"You're right" he agreed - knowing full well that Morgana had done this of her own accord and not for Morgause, "She must be under some spell, it is confusing - but im sure that she will come back the same old Morgana that she was."
Of course he was going to think the drink was poisoned - Uther trusted nothing and no one these days. He looked into the cup, shrugged and then drank some of it. He waited for a few moments before spreading out his arms, "See? Unfortunatly for you i'm still here" he grinned and passed the goblet to Uther. Merlin sat himself down on the chair opposite the King, "My mother tells me to keep my chin up, because there are better times ahead - even when it's at the most darkest point of your life."
Note: Hope you don't mind that last part - couldnt think of what to write!
