As Alexander spoke of his work in the castle kitchens Richard listened intently, storing all the new information away to be used when needed. He liked knowing about people - what they did, what they liked, what their strengths and weaknesses were. People were easy: give them what they want and then take all you can. Sometimes only a glimpse of what they wanted was enough, but that only worked on the extremelly gullible and greedy. But, at present, Richard was not interested in taking anything, and not from Alexander - who probably didn't have that much on him, and certainly not at the moment - no, Richard was already calculating the young man's usefullness. If he could keep him on side, gain his trust then the man might prove very useful indeed.
A ha! Richard had found the man's weakness - well one of them, Alexander seemed to be the sort of man who would have many - a dream, something to be exploited. This was rather impressive, even by Richard's standards as it usually took him at least an hour to gain this much information. Alexander wanted to be a cook; Richard could easily use this to his advantage. "Indeed," Richard nodded and then continued in a more philosophical tone, "One must always keep sight of the dream."
Richard gave a short laugh at Alexander's questions, simply because he was stalling for time whilst deciding what to do. He released Alexander by removing his arm from the other man's shoulders and stepped in front of him. He decided Alexander was not a threat, and if he turned out to be one then he could easily be disposed of. "I gave you my name, but I did not gave you my title." He paused for dramatic effect, and, with a swish of his coat, again for dramatic effect, most of his actions usually were. "As I said, I am Richard de Calys, Duke of Cantia." He gave another bow because he liked doing it. "But, alas - you do not see me at my best." He gestured to his clothing, which, although expensive was clearly not new. "You see before you an impoverished nobleman." And then he sighed, a much heavier sigh than was probably called for, but he was hoping for some sympathy, then he could really get to work.

Richard nodded at Alexander’s words. Hmm, the man could come in useful. It would definitely pay to keep contact with someone who worked with food. He stopped circling him, folded his arms and leant backwards slightly so his weight shifted onto his heels. A moment was taken to fully consider the man before him. Could he be useful? It was probably too early to tell, so he decided to just go with it and then perhaps cut his losses later on.
Alexander was clearly a cheery fellow, and likely to be easily swayed to Richard's thinking. This could become very handy, especially as through Alexander he could gain contacts in the castle...With his mind firmly made up he put an arm around Alexander's shoulders, in what he hoped would be seen as a friendly gesture of genuine goodwill. He already took the man to be a simple on, especially when it came to people, so he was sure his ulterior motives were safely hidden away.
He did have to choose his words carefully though, after all, he was judging the man's character on a few moments of speaking to him. For all he knew, Alexander could be as fake as Richard himself. That was a scary thought. So he took a few moments to decide how to fully take advantage of both the situation and his new acquaintance. From his over-detailed responses he supposed Alexander was a man who liked to talk, and he had known enough men to know their favourite topic of conversation was always themselves, so that was what he went with and required innocently enough, "You work in the castle kitchens? How very interesting. And how do you find it? A strong lad like yourself (compliments always worked in Richard's favour) must surely find it easy work?"

Damn. That hadn’t worked. He must be losing his touch. That was a depressing thought. Richard prided himself on his quick fingers but obviously that wasn’t good enough today. He looked down at the man’s hand on his arm, but didn’t try to break free; he probably wouldn’t be able to. While it was true that he was a gifted swordsman but he didn’t happen to have a sword on him, and he wasn’t any good at any other type of fighting so it was best if he just kept still. Besides, he was a thinker, not a fighter.
He grinned up at the man because he was forced to stand still, and he didn’t like not moving. A grin was doing something at least. Behind his hopefully convincingly naive exterior he was trying to decide how best to get himself out of the current situation and whether he could somehow leave with the man’s money. He was slightly confused by the man’s relaxed attitude towards him, but then he couldn’t complain. He had clearly chosen the right person to get caught by. If the situation was reversed Richard would certainly not be quite so calm.
He regarded the man’s words for a moment, and then decided he may as well take him up on his offer. He produced the purse from his pocket, which was slightly awkward as the man was still holding his arm and said “Well, if you insist. Seeing as you’re paying we might as well find something more...appropriate than a baker’s stall. Richard de Calys, by the way.” He tried to bow but it was hard to do so without one arm. “Duke of Cantia.”

OOC – Sorry it’s so short, Richard wasn’t talking to me. And I don’t mind when it’s set, as I said, Richard’s pretty flexible.
Richard took his hat of, extended his arm and bowed. It was not a gesture that befitted his new acquaintance, but Richard was never one to miss an opportunity for flamboyance. He almost bounced back into a standing position and grinned cheerfully, “Richard de Calys at your service.” He looked the young man up and down, pressed his lips together and continued. “It looks like you need it.”
He folded his arms, he didn’t recognise the man, which was a feeling he didn’t like. Richard liked to think that he knew everyone, it was vital to his line of work. A curled index finger tapped against his chin and he began to circle Alexander as he tried to determine was sort of man he was. “So, Alex, where are you off to on this fine day?”
As someone who made his living knowing people he had learnt a few things about them. Firstly, they fell into two categories: those who were useful, and those who weren’t. The question was, which one was Alexander?

The young nobleman was coming closer, and was apparantly unaware of Richard, or his intentions. But then why would he be? Richard had quickly learnt the art of the pickpocket, and prided himself that he was quite the expert in such matters. As he continued to walk towards the man, scanning his person to find where his purse was, it occurred to him that a few years ago he would feel sympathy for him. He was, after all, doing nothing wrong, he was simply wandering through the city. But Richard was a starving man, well, not exactly starving, but near enough. He needed whatever was in the man's purse more than he did.
It was not that long ago that Richard was able to wander so freely with a full purse. The fact that he was doing so right at that moment didn't count, because he'd earnt that money that day. His latest mark could hardly boast the same feat. Just one look at the man told Richard everything he needed to know about him: he had never done a hard day's work in his life, he had far more money than he knew what to do with and he knew how to dress well. Richard liked that, being someone himself who took pride in their appearance. Still, he needed money, so he approached the man with confidence and loose morals.
"Excuse me, I'm looking for a bakery." He said to the man while quickly sliding his hand round, taking the purse and depositing it in a hidden pocket of his cloak that had been designed for just such a purpose. Sometimes it was just too easy.

OOC - thought it'd be a quick way for them to meet if Richard walked into him, give us a pm if you want anything edited. Also, the thread name is rubbish haha, I'm awful at thinking of them. Camelot was probably one of Richard's favourite cities. When he had still had plenty of money he would often visit other cities because his father had made him. It would educate him, apparantly. But he had never experienced any of those cities like he experienced Camelot, probably because he wasn't surrounded by an entourage. Here, Richard was forced to think for himself, luckily he was rather good at that. Indeed, he had been left with the clothes on his back and little else, well, not the exact clothes on his back, he'd managed to steal them from the castle whilst posing as a servant. Still, they suited him better than they would suit anyone else in the world.
He strolled down a busy street, casually taking his time. He'd already made a fair bit of money today and so was in no rush to make anymore, although he wouldn't say no if the oppurtunity presented itself. Passing a young woman he doffed his hat - it was deep blue and velvet and had been a rather good find. It was simple gesture and he didn't bother to see if she appreciated it or not. It was more out of habit than anything else. While he could no longer enjoy the luxuries and securities of a duke he could at least retain the manners and attitude of one.
A thought occurred to him, so he delved into a pocket in his coat and produced a small, folded piece of parchment. It was written all over with lists in a scribbled, fluid handwriting. Hmm. He did have work to do, which was a shame. He was rather enjoying himself at present. Still, it would do no good to upset his clients. With a heavy sigh he changed direction and collided with something hard and probably human shaped. He stumbled backwards, but quickly regained his balance and repositioned his hat. He tilted his head, observing the object that had been blocking his path. "Awfully sorry, are you alright?"

The street was horrendously busy, but that was something Richard de Calys approved of as it provided him with an almost invisibility. He walked - no, strode through the crowd with all the airs and costume of a gentleman (which he was) but the morals and scruples of a felon (which he was). It was a city of idiots and fools, he had always thought, full of people who were just begging to be taking advantage of. Well, if they would insist...
Richard was on top form today. He'd already relieved several young ladies of their valubles and, perhaps his greatest acheivement all week, found himself a rather fetching hat. He was after all still a duke, even if he didn't have the riches to show for it. But he had his title and his reputation, and of course his wardrobe to prove to the world just how important he was.
Speaking of important, he spotted a young man walking towards him. He walked with the arrogance of man who clearly had too many possessions in the world and needed some assistance. Richard was perfectly happy to oblige. He started weaving in and out of the passers by, picking up a few extra trinkets, as he made his way towards his target. There must be something of interest in the man's pockets...

| ~ • ~ | Character Basics | ~ • ~ |
.:Name of Character:. Richard de Calys .:Nick Name:. Most people refer to him as de Calys, unless they are particularly well acquainted with him, in which case they are allowed to call him Richard. .:Age:. Twenty six .:Race:. Cantian .:Status:. Royalty
| ~ • ~ | Appearance | ~ • ~ |
.:Physical Appearance:. Richard is of medium height with a slim build and pale complexion. He has blue/grey eyes and brown hair with a fringe of such a length that it’s constantly having to be pushed away from his eyes, or simply combed to one side.
Being a duke he is used to wearing expensive and flamboyant – but always stylish – clothing and takes pride in his appearance. Since living on the streets however he has had to change his wardrobe dramatically. Everything he wears has been rather expertly stolen with the exception of a silver ring on his right index finger that belonged to his late father. For the first year or so of life without money he had to resort to wearing whatever he could find, now however, he steals only from the wealthy and so has returned to the clothing of his pre-street days. He has a particular fondness for hats, and prides himself in that he looks rather fetching in them. .:Height:. 5'9 .:Portrayed by:. Luke Treadaway
| ~ • ~ | Personality | ~ • ~ |
.:Personality:. Having been brought up the eldest son of a duke, Richard has spent his earlier years in his father’s shadow, trying desperately to learn all he could so he could live up to expectations. He is incredibly aware of his social standing and uses it to his advantage, even more so when it is the only thing he has left.
Richard has quite the inability to stay still – talking with his hands, bouncing on the spot etc, much to the annoyance of those around him as they are often accidently smacked in the face during his bouts of enthusiasm. He is extremely flamboyant and likes people to be aware that he is around – even if subtlety is called for. He has more than enough confidence in himself and his own abilities, which makes him take the risks that he really shouldn’t. He likes the whole world to know of his achievements and so will purposely seek out any enemies to gloat – and then run away very fast.
Richard always pays his debts, albeit reluctantly and whilst trying to find a loophole. He is has his own view of morality, and will gladly give his services to whoever buys them. He therefore has no specific affiliations, except to himself of course. He does however draw the line at mass murders and those who wish to rise up against the aristocracy – after all, he is still a duke, just an impoverished one. .:Strengths:. Persuasion and charm – which is how he got to where is now. Whenever he makes deals he almost always manages to take favours as his payment and make sure that they are fulfilled. Anyone who reneges on their payment will know about it, but only for a few minutes. He takes pride in the fact that all of his are paid, and so regards those who do not pay with very little empathy.
Sword fighting – taught to him throughout his childhood by the best swordsmen of Cantia, as a duke should always be able to defend himself.
Reputation – not many who have heard of him would dare cross him. He has spent many years building it and uses it to his full advantage whenever he can.
Despite his ‘loyalty for hire’ work ethic he has an ability to make himself seem trustworthy and reputable and would make friends very easily, if he didn’t go and remember all their debts, that is. .:Weaknesses:. His many enemies – in his line of work he manages to annoy many people, many of them quite powerful. His carefree attitude towards this probably doesn’t help matters much, and just serves to anger them even further.
His vanity – he likes his foes to know when they have been beaten, and to beat them in style and would quite readily risk his live in order to let them know just how well their plans have been foiled, and just how easy it was for him.
Richard does not have a forgiving nature at all. He resented his father after his second marriage, and has always hated his stepmother for remarrying as well. He sees mercy and forgiveness as a weakness, especially when he has a reputation to consider.
He is also somewhat of a loner, despite his vast amount of connections and clients he does not trust anyone and would sell anyone out if it suited him. .:Magic Abilities:. None himself although he regularly deals with those who do as well as specialising in buying and selling rare magical paraphernalia. .:Special Skills:. He is a skilled swordsman, and an even more skilled salesman. He can pretty much sell anything to anyone. He’s also been known to steal it back and sell it to them again. .:Accents:. Southern English
| ~ • ~ | History | ~ • ~ |
.:Birthplace:. Cantia .:Family:. King Edmund of Cantia – uncle Henry de Calys – father (deceased) Isabel de Calys – mother (deceased) Ector de Calys – younger brother .:Occupation:. It’s not so much an ‘occupation’ but he can find you whatever or whoever you want .:Current Location of Residence:. Camelot .:History:. Richard de Calys is the oldest son of the late Henry de Calys the previous duke. His mother died of a fever when he was fourteen and was quickly replaced, much to Richard’s disapproval, with Susannah de Molton. Richard’s brother, Ector, is the son of Susannah and ten years old.
Henry de Calys died a few years later after a hunting accident, resulting in an infected wound. It was shortly after this that Richard discovered that his father had managed to gamble his entire inheritance, leaving the family facing poverty. Susannah quickly married the richest noble she could find to secure her and Ector’s financial security. Richard, however, was left alone and with his rather useless title. He was forced to leave his home and live on the streets – reduced to the status of a beggar.
But all was not lost. Richard found himself able to quickly adapt to his new life and became quite the pickpocket. Pretty much everything he stole was then sold on for far more than it was worth thanks to Richard’s charm and persuasion, earning him a reputation as the sort of man who could get anything for anyone, but for a price. Over the past eight years his reputation has been increasing and he has managed to make many connections and build up rather a lot of favours owed to him across Albion.
Richard never stays in one place for too long; he’s too busy acquiring favours from every aspect of human, and non-human, life. Despite the loss of his home, money and brother, he has come to enjoy his life and excels in his ‘dodgy dealings’.
