The man's gentle question stopped Neav as though he had been struck by lightning. Sheer Folly stopped obdiently with him and used the pause to rest her leg off the ground. Neav bit his lips. How stupid he was not to have thought of money! He never had any money, unless you counted the coppers merchants sometimes tossed him for coaxing their stubborn mules to move. And he did not even have any of those with him. The slight colour that was left in his face drained completly. So much for his marvellous idea. In his borrowed status of messanger he had been given saddle-bags with food, but no money. There was no way he could buy a stable for Folly.
"No," Neav whispered, so soft it could almost be heard. He felt like crying. "I have none, sir. I did not think of it..." He gazed despairingly at his mare and she nuzzled him, worried by his emotions. "I am so sorry..." he whispered to her. Then he lifted his chin and turned to face the stranger. Neav knew that he could not just stand here feeling miserable. It would do no good at all. He would just have to manage... somehow.
"I thank you for your kindness, sir," Neav said as politely as he could. "If it is true that no wolves come into this town, we shall be safe enough." It was not worry for himself he felt, though the night was very cold. He worried for Folly and her swollen hoof and her need to lie down and feel safe so that he could work to ease her pain. It would be much harder to tend the swelling out here but Neav knew he had to try.
Notes: yes, that was magic though it was not a spell that Neav used. He does not yet know of his skills and Folly's need just kind of pulled the magic through him. Thank you for asking and I am sorry that I did not make that more clear.

Aaron Williams gave a sigh like a bear blowing a bee from his nose. "I see," was all he said for the moment. Well, did make sense. If it was a lie it seemed a smooth and practised one... and what reason would this lady have to lie? If Neav - Colla, she had called him - was her relative then it would make sense why she would want him. Otherwise he could fathom no reason for it. He was also glad - or perhaps relieved was a better word - that she would not take him away.
"Of course my lady, if you are related and Neav wishes for it then I cannot prevent his visit. I only ask that you do not keep him from his duties too often - Neav has many horses in his care and their needs do not stop just because someone wants a holiday," it was permission in a grudging, if-you-must kind of way. Now that he knew as much as he felt this lady could tell him, Aaron Williams was once again wishing for her to go away. He stepped back and made a bow with the clumsy grace of a dancing bear. "If you would excuse me, my lady," he said. "I have much work to do. More, if Neav is to be away tomorrow." That last was rather more pointed then politeness demanded but Aaron Williams could not help himself. He was gone before she had time to keep him longer, anyway.

The bushy eyebrows of Aaron Williams danced in surprise. "You are related?" he repeated, as amazed as a bear-man could be. For Aaron had found Neav in the forest when he was the smallest of children and they had never heard of any living relatives. Perhaps they may have if the boy had known his own name, but he had not seemed to. They had called him 'Neav' which was more of a sound than a name and had brought him up to be useful in the stables. Aaron had stopped wondering about the boy's family a very long time ago. And now this lady had turned up and claimed to be related! Then a thought struck him. If this lady was really related as she claimed to be... would she not know of Neav's parents? Would she not know his real name?
"'Neav' is our name for the boy," said Aaron slowly. "What is his birth-name? What happened to his parents and why was he left in the forest on his own?" And then he thought of something else, something much more worrying. "If he truly is yours, my lady... Do you plan to take him from here and have him live with you? Aaron Williams did not want that. The boy was so useful to him... though he hated to admit it, he could not find a better boy if he hunted a thousand years.

Aaron Williams was fighting the glare that threatened twist his face. Would she not just leave him alone? He had work to do, he could not waste his time talking with a beautiful, blue-eyed lady... No matter how gently she apologised to him. And she called him kind! Aaron did scowl then, dreadfully. He was not kind and he could not have people thinking that. Yet could he argue with a noble lady? No. Aaron clenched his teeth, willing her to leave him alone. His heart soared when she said she would leave him too his duties... and then came crashing down again, for she did not make good her word but instead asked another question.
Hearing her words, Aaron's scowl darkened. What was this? She wanted Neav? Why? She did not say way. Aaron Williams might not like the boy but he was in his care. Besides, he was good with the horses. He could not allow him to go wandering off with some lady-stranger no matter how gentle she seemed. "What do you want him for... my lady?" his voice was heavy with suspicion. "I answer to the Prince if he comes to harm." There. That made it sound like he did not care what happened to Neav, only what the Prince's reaction would be if he were harmed. Good.

Aaron Williams stared at the lady, that graceful curtsy taken him by suprise. Ladies of noble blood did not curtsy to him. It did not enter Aaron's mind that she was anything but a lady. Even if he was no judge of fancy clothes and manners, he was a judge of horses. No one less than a Lady would have such a creatue as her white stallion. Knowing this he was almost stuck dumb by her words that followed. My Lord, she had called him. Not knowing what else to think, Aaron Williams assumed she was mocking him and resisted the urge to close his black brows in a scowl. No matter how rude a noble was, even the highest ranking servants could not scowl that them.
He listened to the lady's soft, urgent pleading for his stable-boy. So Neav's lateness was her fault? Well. Well, that was interesting. But why was she so concerned for his well-being? Aaron did not see how his runt of a stable-boy could have so captured this lady's heart. When she rested a hand on his shoulder, Aaron Williams resisted the urge to shrug her off. In many ways he was similer to Neav, though he delt with it in different ways. The boy did not like people so he stayed silent and afraid. Aaron Williams did not like people and so he became an angry, bear-like bully. But Aaron did not see or think of this. Instead he harnessed his anger and gave the lady the only answer that was possible to give. "There will be no punishment," Aaron said. "If it was as you say, then the boy did no more than his duty." The words came as a growl but Aaron spoke true. He would not break a promise that he had made. Then he hesitated, knowing there was something else he needed to say, yet he did not want to say it. He wished with all his heart that she would take her soft hand from him and let him get back to his work. "Forgive a man the words that were spoken only in anger." There. He had said it. Now would she take her gentleness and leave him alone?((Short, basic biography of Aaron Williams if you would care to read. www.welcometocamelotrpg.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=minorcharacters&thread=958&page=1]Here. ))

At last Neav lifted his head to look at Lady Maeve again. Her voice sweet and her smile gentle as she asked him to call her just Maeve. As though I were her friend or small brother, Neav though with wonder. The old trust for her washed over him again. He had been as rude as he knew how yet Maeve had remaind sweetness incarnate. He did not understand it... but there were many things he did not understand in this word. Perhaps understanding was not needed. "I would be honoured... Maeve." his words were quiet as the whispers in the grass. But another smile lit his eyes and showed them to be true.
They were almost at the stables by now. The iron shoes of Comet and Rising Sun clattered against the stone. Aaron Williams heard the noise from inside the stables and guessed that it was his wayward stable-boy. "You are late, boy!" he bellowed in the voice of a bear. Neav paled and slid from Comet's back as Master Williams came hurrying outside. He was tall with shaggy brown bear-like hair to match his bear-like voice. His brown eyes glowered at Neav. "You are late," he repeted. "And where is your lunge-line? Your halters? Why are you late? You..." Suddenly he stopped. For Aaron Williams had noticed that Neav did not return alone. His voice and manner changed as smoothly as an olied cart-wheel. "My Lady," he addressed Maeve and made a sharp gesture to his stable-boy. "Get them inside," he muttered. "I will talk with you later." Neav bit his lip. He knew what that meant and he dared not disobay. With a quick glance back at Meave, the boy disapered into the stables, both great warhorses following him with their heads faithfully level with his shoulders. Behind him, he heard Master Williams say, "May we help you, my lady? Care for your mount, directions to the Castle?"

Though Neav tried to be calm, he was skittering like a nervous horse. It was well for him that this stranger spoke softly. The calmness was catching and some of the fear began to die from the boy's eyes. You have to look after Folly, he reminded himself. You have to be calm for her. She needs to be out of the night...
Neav's heart sank when the man said he was not from this place either. Oh, it was bad luck! Neav glanced anxiously back at his mare. She could not afford to limp through the town looking for a place to stay. Neav was afraid if Sheer Folly walked much more on her leg, she might never heal... "An Inn," Neav said softly, scanning the street. Inns always had stables and though Neav did not have the money to pay for one he did not think of that. All he thought of was a place for Folly. Not far away ahead there was a torch blazing away the night. It lit the peeling paint of a wooden sign, showing a waltzing fox. The words over it named the Inn as 'The Dancing Fox' but no one had never taught Neav how to read. However, he did reconside the kind of sign.
Neav raced back to Sheer Folly's side. He whispered in her ear and then crouched down to rest a hand on the lame leg. His touch was light and gentle and seemed to do some kind of good. For when Neav stood again she limped forward, seeming to be in less pain then she had a moment ago. Soon they were level with the stranger-man. "She can walk as far as that dancing fox Inn," Neav murmured. "It is not traverlers season so there should be room..."

Name: Aaron Williams Age: 45 Status: Head-of-Stables in Camelot Castle Physical Apperence: Aaron Williams is a bear of a man. He is six feet tall with brown rough-cut hair, brown eyes and the voice of a bear to match. He smells like horses (as any man in his trade) and though his clothes are as practical as his work, they are of strong frabic and well-made. Protrayed by: Gordon Kennedy Personality: Aaron Williams is once again like a bear. He roars loudly and strikes out with his big, heavy hands. He has a hot temper and it does not take much to anger him. He sorns weaklings and cowards and has no patience for fools. Aaron Williams is very prideful. He does not like to bow to nobility but understands what must be done and is good at acting humble toward them. It is this pride which makes him so dislike the stable-boy Neav. Aaron Williams prides himself in his handling of horses. When he is working with the animals, it is the only time that he shows a more gentle side of his nature. But he hates the fact that something that took him years to learn, Neav seems to know naturally. Like he was born with the knowlage of horses in his heart. Aaron Williams respects and uses this knowlage because of his love for the horses, but it irritates him that he must get the knowlage from a tiny, parentless scrap of a boy. Aaron Williams also believes that boys who are treated harshly when they are young grow up to be stronger men.

Neav had not known what he had expected from Maeve after his rudeness to her, but it had not been an apology. Nobles did not apologise to servants. Not ever. Neav had thought perhaps she would be angry with him and more than a little afraid that she would turn and ride away... but she had done neither. And the way she asked him for his forgiveness made him feel guilty. Neav darted her a glance. Why did she sound like she understood so well? That she understood some feeling that he did not understand himself. Neav chewed on his lips again. He wanted to say that she did not need his forgiveness. She was a noble lady and should not even care what he thought of her! But a whole heavy part of Neav was glad that Lady Maeve had stopped asking her questions. And the shyness had come back to swallow him, and Neav could say no more on this subject.
He looked ahead over Comet's dark eyes, watching the city grow close. When they were almost at the gates he slowed the war-horse to a steady trot. Rising Sun copied their movements like a shadow. "We are here, my lady" Neav said rather needlessly. "The stables are just by the castle... if you still wish to meet Master Williams, my lady, he will be there..." Neav bit his lip, remembering that he was late. His horses felt his urgency and wove through the streets as fast as was safe.

Neav shrugged uncomfortably. This was not a conversation he really wanted to have. Besides, he was quite sure that he had no worse treatment than any small stable-boy deserved. But he was also sure that Lady Maeve would not see it that way. He could not see any way of stopping her asking the questions. Neav could not lie about what happened - he was so bad at lying that even if he did tell untruths he would be caught. Neav did not know why he was so desperate for what went on between him and Aaron Williams to be kept private. All he felt was that somehow he had to keep Lady Maeve from knowing, keep her from asking these such questions. "Nothing," he said and would not meet her eyes. "It is not your business, anyway." Neav tried to sound rude but his eyes were that of an anxious child. Neav was as bad at being rude as he was at lying.
He shrugged again when she called him brave, still not meeting her eyes. He had been so happy before. Why did she keep having to ask him these questions, tell him things he knew was not true? When a boy is called coward almost every day of his life, it takes more than one person telling him he is brave to make him believe it. Even if he trusts that person more than he ever trusted anyone. But Neav would not argue with Lady Maeve. It was not his place. He murmured softly something that could have been anything and asked Comet to quicken his pace. Neav should have been back in the city by now.

Neav stared, incredulous. That Merlin was repeating his words like a bewildered parrot! Surely he could not be as stupid as he sounded. Neav did not think Merlin could be so clever if he was riding Redberry while trying to lead a horse like Tempest, but he could not be a complete idiot. They never would have let him near the horses if he had been. Besides, he had used a spell! Idiots did not do magic either. Spells were very difficult things to learn.
Neav watched him drop his reins onto Redberry's neck. He had the sudden, wicked urge to ask the mare to throw him. She would have done it, and then Merlin would have been off with forest dirt on his stupid grinning face. But Neav did not do it. Getting Redberry into trouble would only make him feel worse, after all. So he only glared, eyes like twin chits of ice. "Don't pretend you don't know!" he cried. "You did magic and sank Tempest to make him move. You do that again and I will get Redberry to throw you and - and - and Tempest will bite you!" Neav finished triumphantly. He Normally he would never have dared to threaten such things. Not only was he being rude, he was also giving away the curious talents he had with the horses. But for someone to use a spell on his horses, even if it had not hurt them...! It made him flare with icy anger.
It did not cross his mind that he might be in danger. That he had seen the powers of a magician and could be killed out here for that knowledge. He did not think that Merlin might worry that Neav could betray him to the King.

Neav considered this, once again chewing on his lip. Really, he did not think he could stop Lady Maeve from meeting Master Williams if that was what she wanted to do. But it was nice of her to ask his permission... and though he did not want her meeting him at all (because of that man's attitude) he could not think of any good reason to say her 'no.' "I - " he started, without being sure what he was going to say. "I - he - Master Williams is not very nice..." he said softly. Perhaps if he warned Lady Maeve then she would not be so surprised over it. "But - he will be polite enough to you." Neav added. And that was true enough because Aaron Williams was always polite to the people who society said deserved his politeness, even if he scorned them behind their backs.
But worried as he was over this meeting, Neav could not help smiling again. She said she would not leave him. She would be there - Mirshann would be there - for whatever wonderful thing he would see that night. But the next question took him by surprise. Did he feel safe in Camelot? Neav gave a small frown, thinking. His herd was in Camelot and he always felt safe with his herd. But then there were the endless people flowing in and out, watching with eyes like wolves. And there was also Master Williams with his quick temper and hard hands and the teasing grooms who followed his example. "I... my herd is in Camelot." Neav said at last. "With the herd, I am always safe. But there are people who - " Neav broke off with a frown. Then he forced a grin. "I am not brave at all, really," he admitted and tried to sound as if he did not care about the fact. "People make me scared, but it is just my fault."

Neav nodded his head. He was not certain and so he could not say that he was because he knew he was so bad at lying. So he lifted his spirits in the special way the Comet could sense and know meant to move forward and began to lead the way back to the city. Rising Sun followed him, needing no guidence or leading-rein. At least there was no need to skip around lies to answer the lady's next question. "Aaron Williams is head-of-stables," Neav told her. Because he never even suspected this lady of magic, Neav had no idea of her intentions. But he did wonder what she could possibly want to show him. It was all so strange! It was like a story that could not be believed.
"I will not be scared if you are with me," Neav said simply. From any other lips these words must have sounded like false, honey-sweet flattery but for Neav it was the truth. For him Lady Maeve was all gentlness, all goodness and kindness. And as he was thinking this, Neav had a suddenly flash of remembering. A dream he had had, months ago now. That terrible time when there had been the drought on all things people ate but nothing else. That time when he had dreamed the death of the unicorn over and over until he had dreamed that it was alive again. He had been told by a gentle maidservant he must never speak of the unicorn creature because it was magic. So he had not. But Neav had thought of the creature so often and when Maeve said he would see things that were beyond the world he thought of the unicorn again. Neav sighed whistfully without knowing that he had done so. Of course he was not going to see unicorns. That creature was forbidden to be anywhere except in his dreams.

Though Neav had dared to run after this man, the part of him that was always afraid of people was certainly not gone. That part of him expected the man to shake him off in anger... and so when he was met only assurance he was glad. The way the man called him 'little one' was what put him most at easy. Most people just called him 'boy' as though they were spitting out the word. And Neav was very glad when he said that the wolves would not come for them here. The boy had a fear of wolves that ran as deep as his horse-senses. "It is really safe here?" Neav forgot to call the man 'sir' in his mixture of worry and fear and gladness. "I thought we were going to be eaten because we could not run..." Neav trailed off. He let go of the man's sleeve, took a step away and a deep, shuddering breath. He had to be calm. This man had asked him a sensible question and he had to answer it.
"I do not know anyone here, sir," Neav admitted. "I just saw the lights and thought it would be safe... but sir, I can care for Folly myself." He glanced back at the mare waiting so patiently with her hurt leg lifted. "If only there is somewhere safe for her to stay... sir." For of course Neav assumed that the man lived in this village, and so thought he would know where he could take the mare.
Note: do not worry about the lateness. And thank you, your post is clear to me! It is a very good post.

Neav chewed on his lip. It was a nervous habit of his and sometimes he got so worried that he actually made his lips bleed. He was trying to decide if he could let this lady talk with Master Williams... He did not think that he wanted her too. The head groom would never let him just go out at night, not even for the word of a noble lady. Perhaps if he thought that the lady had some need of a horse-boy in the night... but it did not sound like Maeve wanted Neav to work. She said she wanted to show him something. Besides, he did not want this gentle lady knowing how Master Williams thought of him. Neav knew it was the right way, the way that all boys were treated but he was worried Lady Maeve would not see it as such. He remembered the trouble there had been when Kazria had seen Neav hit across the face. Even though it had been his own fault for forgetting his job, she had been very unhappy. Neav did not want this lady to feel the same. Even if she only spoke to the head groom his attitude was so obvious that she might start to wonder where the boy's bruises had come from. Neav did not want that at all.
So he forced a smile onto his pale face and tried to chase the worry from his eyes. "There is no need for you to talk to anyone, my Lady," Neav said. "I will not get in trouble." It was not really a lie, his mind tried to excuse itself. If he was careful he would not be caught and then he would not get in trouble and his words would prove true.
Then Lady Maeve suggested he might right Mirshann back to the city. Neav felt a thrill of delight. But then he carefully pushed it away. He could not ride the lady's horse back to the city. Comet and Rising Sun were his charges - if he did not arrive back on them he really would be in trouble. "Thank you," he said with a shake of his head. "But I should ride Comet, my lady." Neav scrambled onto that stallion's back. He was so curious about what Lady Maeve wanted to show him... he really wanted to ask what it might be. Normally he would never had dared but Maeve had been nothing but kindness from the moment they met... "What are you going to show me? My lady?" he added hurriedly, almost forgetting that politeness in his wanting to know.

Neav was delighted by the coin Sir Lancelot had given him. He slid in into his left boot to hide it - the right one had a hole in the side and Neav did not want to loose the money. The only time he had coins to spend was when a knight or noble tipped him.
Neav grinned when Sir Lancelot came from the crowd. He dismounted the great horse and gave him a finger-nibbling of thanks. Neav took the two coins and quickly slid them into his shoe with the first. He had never been given so much before and though a small part of him would have liked to argue... it really was a very small part. Neav was not so rich that he could afford to pass over any coin that someone might give him, even though he would have groomed Sher-Fore for nothing.
"Thank you sir," he said. Then he grinned again when Sir Lancelot said that Sher-Fore was his better half. In Neav's opinion, the horse was the better part of any partnership but not many knights would have agreed with him! "He is the most beatiful horse," said Neav and he did not just mean the stallion's looks. "Sher-Fore will gladly do anything you ask. Even if he is afraid, even if he is so tired he can hardly move, Sher-Fore would run to the end of the world for you." It was a strange, serious thing to say. And strange that someone as shy as Neav would dare to say it. But the boy had been looking at Sher-Fore as he spoke and had said it almost as if he were dreaming. Then he suddenly seemed to wake to himself. Neav blushed and handed the horse's reins to Sir Lancelot, murmuring some kind of apology.

Of course Neav thought that Lady Maeve meant the horses when she said that he was not alone. The boy had never truely trusted any human. This was the first time he had ever been so open, so joyful in a person's presence and though he did wonder why Maeve might affect him so, he did not even consider that she might be Faerie. Or that he might be a hild of magic himself. But as for someone always being there for him... he supposed that she had to mean the horses again. It was they that comforted him when Master Williams grew angry and beat him, or the other grooms were merciless in their teasing. And so he did not answer Lady Maeve, gave only a soft smile. Of course someone as noble as her could not understand the life of a stable-boy. She must have had people caring adoringly for her since she was born.
He bit his lip when she asked if Neav might be able to come away that night. If he was caught, he would be beaten... but it was possible to get away. He was the only person who slept in the stables and he had sneaked out once before to ride under the moon. Neav did not even consider saying 'no.' He felt that he would do anything in the world for Maeve. "I can get away tonight," he said and tried not to think about what would happen if he was caught. "If Mirshann will wait for me outside the wall, I can get to him... what is it you want me to see?" What could a noble lady possible want with a boy in the middle of the night?
((No, I cannot understand it. It is only based on Finnish; the grammer and the sounding of words is something the same, but the words are all different. Like you say 'mirshann' is angel but in Finnish it is 'enkeli'.))

Neav returned the stirrup leathers to their proper lengths and unknotted Mirshann's reins. "Thank you, angel-horse," he whispered, almost to soft to be heard. Mirshann dipped his head as if in reply. Comet and Rising Sun pressed themselves close to Neav, asking for his attention and nibbling at his hair. Neav smiled and pushed them gently away. "I wish that I will, my Lady Maeve," he said when she assured him that he would meet more horses like Mirshann. But if he did, he would not take the horse to Camelot's stables. Neav did not agree with the way many of those knights rode the animals.
Neav was not afraid of this lady. Even for one as shy as him, it was impossible to be afraid. She was so gentle, so smiling that it called to his natural happiness and let it fly free. But when she asked the question about his family, shadows gathered in Neav's eyes. "I have no parents, my lady." he murmured. "I have no family." Most of the time this fact did not worry him. Neav's head was filled with horses and that was enough family for him. But when someone was asking these questions it filled him with unease. As if something terrible had happened that he had chased from his memory. "I was found in the forest when I was maybe four years old," he told her, still in that same low voice. "Master Williams found me - he is head groom of the stables. Two years his Mistress did look after me... and then I became the stable-boy. I live there now," he added with a small grin. "In the hay-loft." In his mind, the best place that anyone could sleep. So close to the horses he could even share their dreams.

It was curious that the one time that Neav would not care if he was punished, was the time that he did not seem to be in trouble. Though to be fair, it was rarely the Prince of Camelot who found him fault. Neav sneaked a glance up at the Prince, just to make sure, and saw that he still did not look angry at all. Neav could not guess from his express what he was feeling... but then, the boy never had been good at that sort of thing. He stared back down at his feet.
And the Prince's next commant surprised him. Neav suddenly had a rush of an idea what it must be like to be a Prince. Everyone would know everything that you did... you could never crawl away and hide, never walk invisible and private in a street. If you made a mistake the whole kingdom would blame you, not just one angry master. Neav suddenly realised that the Prince probably had the most difficult job in all the world. Childish, the boy had never thought of such things before. He was not sure what to do with the idea when his head was so full of sadness for his friends.
"Most people... most people say that you will be a good king," Neav whispered. He was not sure why he said that. It was quite true. Most people did believe such a thing, some even whispering that they looked to the time when King Uther would die. Neav did not mention the slain horses again. Having shouted out his anger, he now wanted to keep that sadness private. He would cry again at night, on his own and he would never ever forget a single one of them... but now he wanted to keep those feelings buried deep inside himself. Neav felt suddenly much older.
