Tam stared at the knight. He rested his hand on his sword in the same casually threatening way she had her's on her dagger. Tam's quick brown eyes took in his amour. If it came to a fight... well, the length of his sword compared to her knives would give the knight an advantage, but the amour would make him slower than she. If it came to a fight, Tam supposed that she had better run. She watched him silently, waiting for him to speak. Either he was just out for a wander in the woods, or he hunted her.
And then his words told her that he was indeed hunting the thief. That disarming smile he gave meant nothing. She had seen many guards and nobles act friendly to a kid, get them to confess and then take them away to be killed. But this knight did not need to know it. Let him think he had fooled her, perhaps. Tam returned the smile with a sunbeam of her own. She would never admit to having stolen the thing, but it was all for the better if the knight thought she trusted him. Her mind was whirling, though you could not have known it from her easy face. If she resigned herself to loosing the treasure, she thought she could get away with her life and both her hands.
"You mean this?" Tam asked innocently, holding up the necklace. It glinted in the dappled forest light. "Guess you are mistaken, Sir Knight," the lies flowed from her lips as easy as truth. "Bought it myself, but few moments ago. Some man and his kid was passing this way, guess they'd been selling cheap pretties like this down in Camelot market and had one left over. Seemed glad enough to be rid of it!" Tam gave an easy grin. "Whatever you've been looking for, Sir Knight, it gonna be worth more coin than I paid for this! This pretty can't be more'n glass, though my sister will like it all the same." Tam finished, in her mind replacing the truth with this new story. That was the secret to good lying. You thought up a story, made yourself believe to be true, and stick to it. That way you did not end up loosing yourself in your web of lies.

...before judge and jury next morning both of us did appear a lady claimed her jewellery the case against us was clear.... - Black Velvet Band
The afternoon sun spilled through the trees, casting shadows and dancing light over the forest path. At a twist in the path, hidden from both directions, Tam Piper sat with her hood pulled over her head. It was not cold, but the hood made her feel better when she had done something stupid. Today she had been stupid. In her thin brown hands Tam held one of the most beautiful necklaces she had ever seen. It was made of delicate silver links, each linking studded with a diamond or sapphire, alternating. It was the work of a master craftsman.
Tam poured the pretty thing from one hand to the other. The light glittered of the jewels and was almost hypnotising. "Stupid," Tam softly cursed herself. "Stupid, stupid, stupid..." Tam was not a jewellery thief. Normally, she was smarter than that. Money was the thing to steal, because when money was in your own hands, your own purse, it was impossible to prove that it was not rightfully yours. Jewellery was different, dangerous because it could be claimed. And to get rid of it you had to know someone secret, someone you trusted with your life. Back at home, Tam might have known such a person, but as a wandering thief... it was almost impossible.
Tam sighed. The whole of Camelot City probably knew about this theft, now. That was why she had left and was sitting here alone. Maybe she would head to Mercia, sell the pretty to some traveller on the way, or take it into Mercia's black underground markets, where no one would know where it came from. She did not really want to. Camelot had seemed nice... she would have liked to spend some weeks there. But she had spoiled things now. The rich lady she had taken the necklace from was bound to kick up a fuss, and any stranger would be searched. At least no one had seen her do it. Maybe she could....
Suddenly Tam froze. Someone had come round the bend in the path. Her fingers closed tight over the necklace - no time to hide it now! How stupid to sit in a double-blind bend! The other hand she rested on her dagger-hilt but did not draw the blade. She would not be hostile until she had too. Timeline: ? Tam Piper is a Thief looking for some threads! She is also a Nomad, so can be almost anywhere. She is pretending to be a boy, so is unlikely to steal anyone's heart... I just wrote it in the subject because it sounded interesting.
However, I am open to any thread ideas. So if you are interested, please reply!

| ~ • ~ | Character Basics | ~ • ~ |
.:Name of Character: Born “Tamasin Smithie”, now gives her full name as “Thomas Piper” or “Tammy Piper” if she is dressed as girl. .:Nick Name:. Tam .:Age:. 17 .:Status:. Born a Citizen, is now a Nomad and a Thief.
| ~ • ~ | Appearance | ~ • ~ |
.:Physical Appearance:. Tam is, nowadays, almost always dressed as a boy. She knows how to disguise herself well, and no one would suspect her for a girl. Her thick, dark brown hair is cut short. (If Tam finds that she does need to play a girl, she covers her hair with a scarf or the one of the little caps which peasants wear.) Her eyes are also dark brown, almond-shaped and framed by double-folded eyelids and black eyebrows. Tam moves with the grace of a cat. Though she does not look strong, Tam is thin enough to make her ‘boy’ disguise convincing, so long as she is careful over what she wears. Her normal clothes are a loose shirt with a sleeveless tunic over. She wears brown breeches, sturdy boots and a belt with a visible dagger. Her other weapons – seven knives in total – are hidden in sheaths under her clothes. (One on each forearm, one beneath each armpit, one on each calf and one below the back of her neck.) She also carries a small pack with her wooden flute and various other importants.
.:Height:. 5 feet 5 inches .:Portrayed by:. Anjali Jay as Djaq
| ~ • ~ | Personality | ~ • ~ |
.:Personality:. Tam’s personality is a curious mix of harshness learnt from a life as a street-thief, and a natural love for life. The Thief-Lord has taught her to be unfeeling, to trust her gang with unquestioning loyalty yet to look after only herself if things go wrong. Tam has grown up stealing for the Thief-Lord and fighting for her life. Though her expression may seem sleepy or even sulky, Tam is always alert. As a thief, she has to be. And yet somehow, despite this hard life, Tam is filled with a radiant, irrepressible cheerfulness. She has a great weakness for mischief, and loves her work as a thief. For Tam it is not only a way of surviving, but a wonderful game of which she is champion. She treats life as a game in which the goal is to stay alive. Her morals are curious. Obviously, she steals and lies. But Tam never steals from people who have little. She never kills unless she has too, and has never enjoyed taking a life. Tam never makes close friends, though she might pretend to. She has to believe that everyone would betray her. It must be that way if she wants to stay alive.
.:Strengths:. Bravery. Boldness. Excellent fighting skills, unarmed and with knives. Endless cheerfulness. Skill with her Flute.
.:Weaknesses:. Distrusts everyone. Loves all kinds of mischief. Rudeness. Steals, lies, cheats and enjoys it. Sometimes uses people.
.:Magic Abilities:. None. Tam does not trust magic. It cannot be seen, caught and held or killed with the cut of a knife. She sees it as an unknown danger.
.:Special Skills:. Excellent fighter with knives and fist-fighting. Plays the wooden flute beautifully.
.:Accents:. Tam’s voice is curiously husky for a girl, which helps with her ‘boy’ disguise. Her words are riddled with street-slang, but Tam is a very good mimic and can speak like a noble if she chooses.
| ~ • ~ | History | ~ • ~ |
.:Birthplace:. Caerleon – Capital of Gwent .:Family:. Mother: Naimh O’Conner (dead) Father: Jacob Smithie (dead) Younger sister: Lily Smithie (dead) .:Occupation:. Thief .:Current Location of Residence:. Anywhere except Caerleon .:History:.
Tam was born “Tamasin Smithie”, first daughter of Jacob Smitie, Citizen of Gwen and well-known blacksmith. When she was seven years old, her entire family caught scarlet fever and died. Tam escaped the disease, but was put out onto the streets by the landlord of their house. She was allowed to take nothing more than the clothes she wore and the wooden Irish flute which had belonged to her mother. The Thief-Lord found her three days later, playing her flute on a street corner in hopes for some coins. She made a sweet picture, played well for her age and many people stopped to watch. The Thief-Lord offered her food and protection of his gangs, in return for her working for him. First Tam simply played her flute, distracting the people while pickpockets took their money. Then she learned to steal herself, and fight a deadly battle with knives and fists. As Tam grew older she learned of the undesirable fate of too many street girls, and began to dress as a boy to keep herself safe. Luckily, she fitted the disguise well. Even ‘Tam’ (the shortening of Tamasin) was a version of the boys name ‘Thomas’. When she was fifteen, the Thief-Lord involved her in a plan for murder. Tam was not happy. She did not like to kill, even in a fair battle. At the last moment, Tam failed to complete her part, causing the plan to fail and several of the Thief-Lord’s people to be caught. Tam found herself fleeing Caerleon with the Thief-Lord crying for her blood. Now she wanders the Kingdoms, knowing she can never go back to the city in which she was born. She has taken the last name ‘Piper’ to mimic her wooden flute.
