Really? REALLY?! Arthur was not happy about this. Of all the men that could be his servants . . . his father had assigned the town's idiot. Granted, he did save the Prince's life, but Arthur's pride stood in the way of accepting him. Especially after he had called him a prat, and an ass. Arthur was not willing to forgive him that easily, and this was going to be apparent in which tasks he was going to make him do. He had to give him a tour of the castle, or well, the necessary places. He was going to give him hell! As if throwing him in the dungeon and fighting him with a mace was not enough. No. He was going to make him regret the day he insulted him. Oh how this was going to be so exciting!
It was morning, and the Prince was waiting for his new victim, aka servant to arrive. Though he was not late, Arthur would make a big deal about his lack of punctuality. Anything negative he could find to say to him, he was going to say it. He supposed the proper thing to do was to thank the peasant for saving his life . . . but Arthur was not that kind, not right now anyway. He felt like tormenting someone, and that someone would be Merlin Caradoc.

it's just a game when you're the boss and i'm just a slave and i just play to entertain
And just why did he have to save Arthur's life? He should have let the prat b pierced through with a knife, right then and there, but no, he had to be a good boy and push him around of way into a questionable position on the floor, which then had to be recognized by the entire hall, of course. And then that dreadful king had to go and pronounce them prince and manservant and seal it with applause.
So here he was, stuck with the prat, for who knew how long. Dragging his feet as he walked, Merlin gritted his teeth as he plodded toward his certain doom.
He placed one hand behind his head, slowly massaging the spot on his back where the stocks had dug into his flesh. Still, it did not prepare him for the physical pain and emotional frustration that the prince would later inflict upon him.
"You wanted to see me...Sire?"

FINALLY! The idiot had decided to show up. He just looked at him, staring at him with what strange expression expressing this strange situation. "I expect to see you every morning from now on. I should not have to send for you. You are my servant, you will come on time, every day." His tone was rude, authoritative, and spoken like a true spoiled prince. Merlin looked incapable; weak. How was he going to help with his training?! He had seen the man with a mace . . . it was pitiful.
"As my servant, you will be told to do many things. Cleaning my room, waiting on me, running errands, helping me train, mucking out my stables -- " Arthur said this last task with a smirk, knowing it was not the most ideal or enjoyable duty. "Now, these are my chambers. As you can see, a great deal of work already needs to be done: laundry, sweeping, dusting, everything." He was not by any means going to go easy on him. "But I suppose the first thing I should do is give you a tour of the castle, so follow me, and try to keep up." This was going to be a very interesting day indeed.

He nodded dully, a steer being dragged to the slaughter, but not directly to the knife; first he had to be dragged through a obstacle course of humiliating trials: driven to market, in other words.
"Yes, Your Highness." He answered, automatically, fearful that anything smarter would get him thrown in the stocks for another day while peasants pelted him with rotten the likes of which hadn't seen the light of day for weeks. His words were as dry as the rot stuck between the leaf and the intent the in the...they must have been apples.
Merlin felt his heart lighten a little as Arthur described his duties at length and they actually weren't that bad. Besides, his chambers were inside a castle and promised to be a pleasure to clean after the slums at home. In Ealdor, there were swine to clean up after, as opposed to mucking out stables.
"Yes, of course, Sire." He said, his voice instantly becoming more cheerful. So long as he put up with the prat, the work didn't sound half-bad. Not yet, at least.

Unfortunately, the more cheerful Merlin sounded, the more irritated Arthur grew. His servant was not supposed to be cheerful! What was wrong with this Merlin person! Arthur looked at him. What was it that had made this peasant so brave? He clearly had little to no combat skills, and yet he had quick instincts which was apparent when he saved his life. Oh great. The servant had saved the prince's life. Arthur was going to be forever indebted to this man . . . even if he never admitted it, Arthur knew it in his heart.
Arthur smirked at him. "Whats the matter? No new insults or name calling today?" In a way, he was indeed trying to provoke him so he would have a reason to punish him. It was just fun because Merlin did the unexpected, and that amused the Prince a great deal. Of course, at the time day, to some degree it angered him that someone he had not met before dared to call him less than flattering names. "I suppose your learned your lesson when you were thrown in the dungeon, put in the stocks, and beaten with a mace and broom," Arthur added on for his own enjoyment as he thought back to those amusing incidents.

What's the matter? What's the matter?!
Apart from the fact that he had just been made slave to and practically chained to the single most conceited brat the universe had ever produced and being made to follow him around like a puppy being collarbroken, Merlin was doing swimmingly, thank you very much. And apart from having to address his new owner as "Sire" and "Your Highness", everything was going his way, thanks so much for showing your concern. He held his tongue, however, until his personal overgrown toddler took it even farther and Merlin suddenly found himself speaking.
"You forgot the part about getting thrown in the dungeons, getting my arm nearly bent off, oh, and apparently one of your guard's mastiffs thought I was a lady-dog before Gauis finally set me more chores. So, my brain is merely comprehending the good thrashing. But don't be disappointed," He added, his sarcasm finally going into high-drive, "I'll be back to my regular, punching-loving self soon enough. Is this the room where I peel your victims' skin off and dip then in boiling salt while they're still alive?"

Arthur just looked at his idiotic servant. He had to admit that he was surprised by his words. He had not expected Merlin to say anything in return, and Arthur was just going to taunt him and provoke him . . . but the Prince's plan backfired when Merlin did not keep his mouth shut. He held back a laugh when a dog mistook him for a dog. And his laughing mood ceased when Merlin just kept rambling. He stayed quiet for a moment, just staring at him. He considered throwing him back in the dungeon, but no. There were going to be other ways to torture him. He was now his servant, and Arthur was not going to show him any mercy at all.
"That mastiff is rather intelligent then, more than you of course, because he was not far off from what he believed you to be." He now took a couple steps towards the bold peasant. "Merlin, I think you may have forgotten what happened when you spoke so boldly, or stupidly I should say. If you thought the dungeon, stocks and beating were bad?" He stood close to Merlin, in a threatening way. "You are now my servant, and you will serve me, and I will make your life a living hell." With those words, after a moment's pause, he drew his sword out of the holder, and positioned the side of the blade at his neck. He froze in that position for several seconds before shoving the sword at him, though of course not stabbing him. He just pushed it towards him with as much force as he could, hoping it would cause the weakling to stumble. "Polish my sword." That was just the beginning.

it's just a game when you're the boss and i'm just a slave and i just play to entertain
"Oh, I see how it is," Merlin quipped, before he had the self-restraint to shut his mouth, "you don't merely want a manservant, you want a bitch too. You and that mastiff--."
He broke off, his eyes widening as he realized what he had said. He was exhibiting a old streak that only tended to come out when he met someone really insufferable and usually, bu now, he would have blown that insufferable person to smithereens, in the privacy of a mud-hut away from prying, magic-hating eyes. But, for the first time in his life, he was being watched. For the first time in his life, he was dealing with a real, life prince and nobody would be particularly thrilled with him if Merlin blew him to smithereens, despite the almost overwhelming temptation to nail him, via magic, to his ceiling and affix a pair of underwear to his head.
He backed up, slowly, not liking a metal blade on his neck in the slightest. Common senseless and death-defying he might be, but he liked being alive, thank you very much.
"Y-yes, Sire." He said, quickly, nodding his head obsessively.
Had he not been pinned under his new-master's blade of certain death, Merlin would have rebutted with the comment that real hell would be better than the Tartarous Arthur inflicted upon him, but, given his current situation, all he did was nod, then jerk back violently and fall onto his backside as he felt the blade shift against his neck. He let out a whiny groan as he hit the floor, then pulled himself into a sitting position, supporting himself on his long-bony arms.
"Polish my sword."
Merlin was surprised to hear himself squeak like he was thirteen again.

Arthur was eyeing Merlin very closely . . . and strangely. He was such a peculiar man. Surely there was a better servant, better suited for Arthur than this moron. "Thats more like it," Arthur said rudely when Merlin simply acknowledged the Prince's command. "And while your doing that, do the rest of my armor." He proceeded to pick up the different pieces of metal and shove them into Merlin's hands.
"Oh, and don't forget my chainmail," he added, shoving that on top of the already building pile of metal. "I need that first thing tomorrow morning, but you can't start now. Once you're finished holding it like an idiot, then I will show you the rest of the castle so that you can carry on with other tasks." Show no mercy. Thats exactly what Arthur was going to do. He was going to show Merlin that he could not get away with calling him names. "Hurry up then, you move slower than a snail." Arthur was already at the door, impatiently waiting for him. He was purposely moving quickly.

Merlin felt a growl rising in his throat when Arthur expressed with approval at Merlin's compliance, but the servant suppressed it, though he made a face as Arthur told him to polish the rest of his armor.
What did he look like? A personal servant? Oh...yeah...
Chainmail? Merlin only had fuzzy memories of knights and warriors passing through his village dressed in full armor. How was he supposed to polish this guy's armor in time for the morning? He barely knew the difference between a helm and a gauntlet, though he supposed Arthur had dozens of each.
Other tasks? Merlin's breathing increased very slightly, an early sign of the stress that he would not escape for many years to come, though he didn't know it yet. Other tasks? When was Arthur expecting him to sleep? He probably wasn't, knowing him. And the scary part was, Merlin barely did know him.
"Right." He muttered, bad-temperately. He looked, with a rather rodent-like air, around the room, searching for a rag, but seeing as this was the prince's chambers, he doubted there would be cleaning rags lying around.
"Erm...what do I use to clean your wonderful sword of wonderfulness?"

Arthur ignored his question. He really did it to make things more difficult for the man . . . even if in the end he would give him a rag to do it. For now, he was going to give him as little information as he could about how to do the tasks he was listing off to him. Instead, he decided to focus on how he asked the question. Arthur looked at the poor excuse for a human being. "Do I detect sarcasm Merlin?" He asked, in a curious voice. "Surely you can't be that stupid to continue to test my patience." If he thought this was bad, he was in for quite a surprise.
Arthur folded his arms across his chest, looking at him. "Do you plan on carrying that all around the castle, or are you going to put it somewhere until I'm done showing you where to go so that you don't get lost. Although, you probably will anyway . . . you don't seem to display any signs of intelligence." Yes, Arthur was going to continue to abuse him. It was quite fun for the prince; he was a bully after all, he was just living up to that image.

Oh, no, surely not.
Surely yes. Stupid prince.
Things had just gotten about ten million times worse in the “my personal slave” department, for apparently, his royal ass was going to make him clean swords without cleaning materials. And watch, if Merlin went to put it down, he suspected Arthur would tell him to first clean it and then not to leave it lying around. “Put it somewhere” wasn’t exactly the most direct instruction in the world and Merlin knew Arthur well enough, just for the net fifteen minutes or so they had spent together, that the man pathetic excuse for a eunuch, was going to make his life a living hell. Oh, wait, he had said that to his face, hadn’t he?
The bottom line was: damned if he did, damned if he didn’t.
So, he did the stupid thing that anyone would do, and thrust the sword through his belt, making himself look like the most mismatched (and stupidest) servant to ever enter Camelot.
“Oh, no, Arthur.” He assured him, his voice positively dripping with sarcasm. He made a face and opened his mouth to say something, but resentfully bit his tongue. Serfs weren’t supposed to be smart. He was a member of the group known as lesser mortals. He wasn’t supposed to use long words or know how to write, which…come to think of it, he didn’t.
“Yes Sire.” He said, dully, “I am a monkey-brained simpleton. Do with me what you will.”

Was there someone truly this stupid who existed? Arthur could not believe it. He gave Merlin a quizzical look, especially when he put the sword in his side . . . the sword looked like it weighed more than the lanky man. Arthur was going to have to put him in shape if he expected him to keep up with all the training he was going to make him do. And that was when he found yet another thing to get angry at Merlin about; his lack of title when referring to the Prince. "I'm not sure if you've noticed . . . since you clearly lack any hint of intellect, but it seems you need to be reminded, yet again. I am the Prince of Camelot," he said, in a boastful manner. "You do not address me by my first name, ever."
At least when Merlin referred to him again, he said Sire, but still. Arthur was going to give him a hard time for it. "Sire, My Lord, those are what you should be saying. Not my first name. Is that clear?" Since Arthur was already on a roll . . . "And your sarcasm will land you in the stocks again. Apparently, it takes you about three or four times for you to learn your lesson."

it's just a game when you're the boss and i'm just a slave and i just play to entertain
There it was again; the blatant disrespect for any shred of the most remote brain activity he might have. But did Merlin expect any different? Of course not, this was Arthur, Prince of Albion’s feather-brained jesters; said prince could not be expected to treat him with any sort of human regard.
Merlin momentarily considered drooling or arranging his lips so it looked like he had buck teeth. Maybe a cross-eyed stare would make His Highness happy.
“Yes,” And here Merlin had an overwhelming urge to say “ma’am”, “oh-god-of-my-very-life-force.” He said, innocently, through nashed teeth. What? Wasn’t that what he wanted to hear? Maybe Arthur liked to talk more than he liked to listen. Yeah, that sounded about accurate.
And so, struck mute, Merlin did the only thing he could do, and crossed his bony arms over his scrawny chest and rolled his eyes, obviously, then fixed the wall slightly to the left of Arthur’s shoulder with a bored glare. And then, in spite of himself, he let one more quiet sentence slip.
“I have a name too, you know.”

Arthur still was not appreciating the bold servants sarcasm. He was not used to people talking to him this way, and he did not want to get used to it. Oh well. He would make him suffer for it. "I warn you, stop the sarcasm. Thats an order." Honestly, Arthur just wanted to use the word 'order' to remind Merlin that he was under his full command . . . that he could not defy him, and if he did, he would be severely punished. Oh this was going to be rather fun after all. He would have to thank his father later for this.
"Your name from now on is Idiot for it is a very accurate word to describe your actions and stupidity." Arthur was not going to concern himself with being nice to a servant . . . especially one like him. "Now follow me," he said, beginning to lead him out of the room so that he could give him a tour of the castle. He was going to make it as confusing as possible. "And try not to trip over your own feet," he added, emphasizing the man's clumsiness.

Merlin growled before he could stop himself. He admitted he had a problem keeping his temper, and his words, in check, but so would anyone, if they had to deal with this…this…this…THIS! He screwed his face up in attempt not to explode and get himself thrown into the stocks again and took a deep breath. As he exhaled, he forced two words through his clenched teeth.
“Yes. Sire.”
Mentally, he was cursing, his brain privy to the filthiest swear words he knew and growing up alongside Will, Merlin knew quite a good ones, though he had better manners than to let them go flying pell-mell everywhere. Idiot. Well, if Arthur wanted an idiot for a manservant, Merlin would give him exactly what he wanted; just as Arthur was planning to make his life hell, Merlin would return the favor.
Resigned, Merlin plodded after his new master, his entire body rigid with suppressed anger and on the way out, he tripped on the door jam. Pain exploded through his foot and he hopped around, crashing into the wall and biting his tongue in an effort to keep from lashing out.
“Sorry.” He growled, not meaning it.

Arthur was enjoying every moment of this. Every time Merlin said Sire was just like smacking the moronic servant in the face. He loved it. He would regret ever calling him anything but titles of authority. Arthur's smirk vanished when on his way out, Merlin hurt his foot. Arthur just stood there, watching him in disbelief. The Prince was at a loss of words to verbalize how ridiculous he thought the man in front of him truly was. Arthur stood in the hallway, just outside the door, just staring.
He didn't suggest that Merlin go see Gaius to get his foot checked out. Arthur actually didn't provide any comfort or seem to express any concern for his injury. "What the hell are you doing?" he asked, his tone of voice making his thoughts clear, for Arthur talked to Merlin like he was a complete and total moron "Are you done dancing around or do you need another moment?" He said sarcastically. What a fumbling oaf.

Merlin made an odd hissing sound in the back of his throat while hopping up, quickly silencing the gurgling that had preceded it. Finally, he gingerly put his foot down and staggered around, fighting to get his words to come out without sounding like a monkey learning to speak English.
“Toes…hurting…” He managed, wildly gesturing in the general direction of his legs. “Feels like they shattered on your damn doorjam.” He gasped, his words coming more freely now, although whether that was a good thing or not was up for debate. And then, without thinking, again, he spoke.
“Are we getting a tour of Gauis’ chambers now?”

This boy was going to be a problem. "You must really love the stocks, because from the way your talking, you'll be spending quite a bit of time in them." That was a far more entertaining punishment than the dungeon. It was humiliating, and exhausting, and . . . Arthur would have to make a special appearance the next time his idiot man servant ended up in it -- which would be rather soon with the way things were going. "Well if your toes are feeling better then," -- Idiot -- "Then lets get a move on. I have a feeling its going to take a long time for you to understand everything." Arthur was clearly insulting his competence and mental capacity, which was nothing new.
"Aren't you staying with Gaius? You can give yourself a tour of his place. I'm going to show you where you will be spending most of your time, and you'll be lucky if you get to have a good night's sleep in the comfort of your room." That was a bit of an empty threat. Even Arthur was not that cruel . . . . . . . . or was he? "Come," he said commandingly, speaking to Merlin as if he was a dog. He then began to walk down the hall way, trying to be quick so that Merlin would not be able to walk at a leisurely pace.
