Arthur was hurriedly packing his things. He did not have much time to make a get away from the castle, so he had told Merlin to meet him around this time. The sooner they left, the sooner they could bring back Guinevère. Gwen. Arthur worried for her more than he would ever admit to anyone . . . other than her of course. With his growing love for her, he found the distance they were forced to maintain difficult to bear. Even Merlin did not know of his affection for her, nor did Arthur have any immediate plans to tell him. He would make up an excuse if Merlin was so curious as why the Prince was this desperate to find her. So far, he had not said anything which was good. Arthur wanted to focus on finding Hengist and bringing Gwen back to safety, for he absolutely refused to believe that she was dead.
He stuffed a couple more things in his pack before grabbing a coat and putting it on. They could not dress in full out armor as they would be going to Cenred and that alone was enough to cause a tremendous amount of tension. The kingdoms were not exactly on peaceful terms, so Arthur was going to try to sneak in as inconspicuously as possible. He looked around the room, making sure he had everything, when he heard a knock on the door. Arthur went to it and opened it. It had better be . . .
"Merlin!" He exclaimed in a harsh whisper. He yanked him by the shirt and pulled him into the room and out of the hallway. "Get in here!" He demanded while doing so. When he did a quick glance in the hallway to make sure no one followed, he closed the door behind him. "Did you get everything you need?" He asked as he began to fasten the sheath to his belt. Arthur was determined to bring her home; no matter what the cost.

jessie is a friend you know he's been a good friend of mine
He had been fast asleep, thank you very much. It was no mystery that Merlin slept like a baby—no, babies woke up in the middle of the night and Merlin slept more like a rock. Once he was out, he was out cold, probably because of the non-stop medieval drama and constant chores of the day before. Running from place to place and being used continually as a verbal and occasionally as a physical fruit-pelting punching bag, made him fall asleep as soon as his head touched his itchy pillow.
Needless to say, he did not appreciate being woken, ever and he appreciated it even less before his time for sleeping was up.
He had strolled casually down the hall, cursing sleepily under his breath as he went, until he reached Arthur’s chambers. Before he even bothered knocking on the door, he stretched luxuriously and knocked, one hand still stretched out comfortably behind his back.
The next thing he comprehended was a rough jerk from his chest and then a flash of an all-too-familiar face, a snarling of “Merlin! Get in here!” and then his face said a thorough hello with the floor, an entity which he now knew very well.
“Mrgggghhh!” He complained, rolling over onto his back and glaring at Arthur. He opened his mouth to say something stereotypically stupid or yawn pointedly, when he blinked, and shut his mouth.
“Huh?” He said, helpfully.

Arthur glared at Merlin. Did he not care that his good friend was missing?! Was it that easy for the idiot to find sleep right now?! Arthur knew he would not be able to catch a few seconds of sleep; he was far too worried, far too fearful of Guinevère's safety. "Wake up!" he demanded, still shuffling around the room, trying to get what he needed. "I told you to come here prepared to leave right away." And the idiot had fallen asleep. Big surprise.
"We're going to go find Guinevère," he finally admitted. He could play it off as if he was going for Morgana's sake, or because he considered her a friend -- even though it was truly something more -- but either way, he was desperate to leave. "But if you want to stay here and sleep then thats fine with me, but I'm leaving." Arthur paused, looking at Merlin, giving him just a couple of moments to decide because Arthur was not going to waste a second.

jessie is a friend you know he's been a good friend of mine
Something about waking up, leaving and Gwen needing finding and---oh, it would be so much easier if Arthur just shut up.
“What?!” Merlin demanded, uncharacteristically sharply. Arthur was leaving, going after Gwen, caring little that he, Merlin, idiot extraordinaire, was sprawled out on the floor, sleeping like a rock baby. This…wasn’t like him. First cooking dinner, then spending several nights alone with her in her house and all of a sudden, I’m-going-to-risk-all-and-go-galavanting-off-after-her. Well, Arthur had done it for him before, but Merlin had something to offer if Arthur kept him alive; grunt work and entertainment through his humiliation. Gwen and Arthur…how were they connected again?
Unless…no…Gwen was a considerably attractive woman, but no, certainly not. She was, like Merlin, a servant and he thought it would have been quite below princeyboy’s dignity to…
“No, no, I’m not letting you running off to serenade and/or save damsels in distress while you’re this drunk.” Merlin promised him, hauling himself off the floor, grabbing one of Arthur’s cloaks from a nearby peg and fastening it around his neck. He stood in it, letting the garment fall to the floor with fabric to spare. He was taller than Arthur by an inch, but Arthur was much bigger than he was side to side and that left Merlin looking like a boy playing dress up with his father’s jacket.

Well finally! The idiot seemed to be getting some sense . . . for once. "I am not drunk," Arthur argued defensively. He would have to explain these actions to someone . . . especially his father who was going to notice that he risked his life for a servant . . . again. The last time Arthur had done that, he wound up in the dungeon. He could only imagine how much worse it would be this time. But he didn't care. He would do it with as much determination as he had done for Merlin. In a different way of course. Merlin was Arthur good friend, though Arthur masked this by his poor treatment of the man. Guinevère . . . he would this because he loved her.
He could also use the excuse of Morgana being the reason he had done it, and others would believe is as they knew of Morgana and Gwen's close friendship. Arthur gave him a look as if to say 'you look ridiculous' and then just grabbed a few things to ready for their journey. "Come on then, we can't waste a moment." He had some rope and tied it to the bed post, as tight as he could and then went to the window. Damn. The bed was too far from the window. He untied the rope and looked a this servant. "Will you be able to hold the rope if I climb down?" Arthur asked, doubting Merlin's physical strength.

“Riiiiiiiight.” Merlin mocked, disbelievingly, but he said no more on the subject of Arthur’s supposed wastedness; not yet, anyway.
He was not the sort of person who picked up on things; the observant type, so to say. In fact, it had been noticed by almost everyone who dealt with him that Merlin missed the finer points in life or at least he would miss half of the point, as much as he would accuse Arthur of doing just that. Still, he could not help but notice that this was not normal Arthur behavior. The last time he had wanted to go rushing off into the forest was for a girl…Sophie the sidhe. On that occasion, Merlin had had the privilege of convincing his master that he, Merlin had knocked him out cold with a simple piece of wood after the fact, and Arthur, needless to say, hadn’t been pleased.
Was this about some femme fatal who had gone prancing around Arthur’s chambers, captured his heart and was know luring him into a lake with the promise of a civilized dinner. Not again, not on Merlin’s watch.
“This isn’t about a girl again, is it?” He asked, slowly, then added, hastily, “Sire.”
He looked at the rope, then back at Arthur, then back at Arthur.
“You can’t be serious.” He said, his tone deadly serious. No need to mention the tragic combination of his scrawny arms and Arthur’s weight problem.

Arthur glared at Merlin when he asked his question. "Yes, this is about a woman. Its about Guinevère!" Arthur was able to say it, without hinting too much. He was being sarcastic, altering the meaning of how Merlin had meant it. Ironically, it was about a woman . . . but not in the way Arthur could admit to his friend. "Morgana will be devastated if anything happens to her, and I'm rather certain you would be too, so stop asking ridiculous questions and lets get a move on!" Arthur's impatience was growing. Hengist was not going to wait too long for the ransom. He hated thinking of what they could be doing to Gwen at this moment . . . . .
Focus. He had to focus.
"Do I look like I'm kidding right now?" Arthur said in a very stern voice, with a very serious expression. "You can come out through the front since it doesn't matter that you're leaving at this hour. But for me, I have to be more discreet, so if you don't mind . . . " Arthur took hold of the rope, and slowly began to make his way down the window, taking each step at a time, and being as careful as possible. Until he came to a bit of a stand still. He rolled his eyes -- even though no one was there to see him -- and looked up. "Lower the rope!" He demanded in a very harsh whisper.

Merlin raised his eyebrows, disbelieving. Gwen was far from femme fatal or lady in shimmering silks and she was a peasant on top of it. If the way Arthur treated him was any indication, the prince wasn’t exactly thrilled to socialize with the lower classes, so why was he fretting over rescuing her? Morgana? - And Merlin felt an increasingly familiar rush of pleasure at the sound of her name – no, he had ignored her before, in the throne room, Merlin had seen it with his own eyes.
“No, no.” Merlin said, hurriedly adjusting his facial features to resemble an expression of speed, but internally, his mind was still whirring. Arthur…Gwen…no, surely not…
He grasped the rope against all of his better judgment, but having no choice in the matter. Arthur was going, like it or not, and Merlin didn’t like it, but he really had no choice. Well, he could stay here and one of two things would happen that would further make his life hell: Arthur would go charging off into his sunset and get killed or he would return alive and skin his manservant for not aiding him in his quest for riding off into the sunset of certain death.
“You know, I don’t think this is a good—.” And he felt his body lurch forward as Arthur put his weight on the rope. He bit back a curse and dug his heels into the floor. This slowed the process considerably, but Merlin’s body was still dragged, millimeter by millimeter, across the floor. Quickly, Merlin hooked one of his legs around Arthur’s bedpost and let out a groan of pain. His migration towards the window had halted, but it felt like his body was being slowly torn in two. He let more of the rope through his burning hands.
“Hurry up!” He implored, not louder than a pain-filled whisper.

Arthur did not have to see Merlin to know that he was having issues keeping a firm hold on the rope. He was losing his grip and the sudden drop, only to be abruptly brought to a hault, was a clear indication of that. Arthur made an annoyed face as he hung in the air, half way down the castle walls. "Lower the damn rope!" he demanded, his voice still in a harsh whisper but this time a bit louder than before. "Merlin, I swear to god if you let go . . . " Arthur could think of many threats he could make and each and everyone was tempting at this moment.
Unfortunately, he had not time to narrow it down. The rope was loosened and Arthur lost his grasp, falling to the ground and lying in a pile of hay, right next to . . . oh disgusting! Arthur lay there, looking up at the window, just daring for Merlin to show his face. He was not sure what he would do to him, but he had the entire journey to Hengist's place, the rescuing of Gwen, and the journey back, to decide the most fitting punishment for his idiot man servant. Right now, he needed to concentrate entirely of finding Guinevère, which meant he needed to get up off the hay and away from the . . . manure.

Merlin's hands felt like they were burning as the rope slid through them at an agonizing pace. He whined pathetically in the back of his throat as he realized another handful of rope. His skin was raw and red, or at least, that was what he was guessing, as he couldn't very well open his hands to take a look. And Arthur wanted more? Faster? Now?
In a desperate attempt to escape both the innuendo the scene was providing and the impending lecture once Arthur got his fat hands on him again, Merlin did just that--lowered more rope...more than he had to lower, that was.
"Sh--." A curse flew from his lips as the rope wiggled out of his grasp and slithered down the stone wall, taking the unfortunate Arthur with it. There was a loud thump and Merlin only stood there, stupidly, his hands over his face, afraid that Arthur might be lying in the courtyard with a broken neck, or worse, alive. After a moment, he inched over the window and peered out, not quite sure he wanted to see what he saw.
It would have been quite funny, Arthur lying there, with horse manure all over his face. But it was not funny and Merlin was torn between running down to help his master up or jumping out the window in a suicide attempt.
"They say manure baths keep your skin from...wrinkling." He said, in a small, high voice.

Arthur had been waiting for Merlin to lower the rope . . . not lower him! But in an unexpected slip of the rope, Arthur went flying down and landing in a big, massive, heap of . . . . . . . . Arthur was going to kill him. Not just kill him; murder him in a slow and painful death. Of course, Merlin had until they found Gwen and brought her home to enjoy what little remained of his life. Idiot. Arthur just lay there for a moment, glaring up at his servant. His words made it even worse, for Arthur in that moment, wanted to stuff the manure in his mouth.
"Merlin," he said through gritted teeth, trying to control his anger and irritation. If he yelled too loudly, someone would surely wake up, and he was still trying to sneak out since his father had not exactly granted permission for this mission. "Get. Down. Here. Now."

jessie is a friend you know he's been a good friend of mine
Merlin did not say a word as Arthur glared up at him, but quivered under his gaze like a small child who had been naughty and was expecting a beating. Instead, he slowly nodded and backed away from the window. Arthur was going to beat the living daylights and other four-letter words out of him, and he knew it. Five feet from the window, he turned and broke into an all-out, as fast as his long legs would carry him.
Down two flights of stairs and he skidded to a clumsy halt, but he had stopped too late. Flinging his arms out on either side of him, he waved them wildly for a moment, fighting for balance. And then, as if his situation could not get any worse, he fell over the earth-bound, horizontal Arthur. With a girlish squeal of terror, he scrambled off of his master and landed, with a satisfying squelsh, in wet manure, right alongside him.
Weakly, he lifted a hand and waved at the prince, his entire face in cruel cringe.
Well, at least Arthur couldn't complain that Merlin didn't know the delights of rolling around in warm, wet animal leavings.

While Merlin was scurrying down the stairs -- or that was what he had better be doing -- Arthur stood up, making a disgusted face at the material he was currently covered in. The texture, the smell, the . . . everything about it was revolting! And Merlin had caused this. He watched the clumsy oaf stumble in and also fall into the pile of manure. Seeing that was rather satisfying, but Arthur was disappointed for he had been planning to be the one to push him into it. "Well look at that, you're right where you belong," He commented, making a face.
"Here, let me help you up." Was Arthur really going to provide Merlin with the necessary assistance to lift himself from the pile of fresh manure? Not at all. Instead, Arthur leaned forward, taking a handful of it and smearing it all over Merlin's mouth and then the rest of his face. Standing in a straight posture once again, and rubbing his hands on a cloth he pulled out from his pocket, he was now more satisfied with his servant's state. "Now hurry it up; we've already wasted too much time," He said as he began to walk away.
