Everything had been going so well. Well, relatively good compared to what they had been the days, weeks, and months prior to finding Morgana. His father was ecstatic by her return to Camelot and while Arthur shared that joy, he was even more happy to see his father so relieved and jovial. He had even been drinking . . . apparently too much. But for some reason, that did not seem to be what the issue was. He had been crying! Sobbing! He had never seen his father cry like that and Arthur could only wonder how many guards saw him and how this would tarnish his reputaiton as a strong and confident leader.
Arthur sat by his father's bed, not quite waiting for him to wake up, but just wanting to be near him to ensure that everything was alright. Though he was in a deep sleep, he did not look like he was resting. Arthur hated seeing his father like this. He needed him to wake up. He needed the man's guidance for the sake of the kingdom. Whatever mental affliction had hit him, he hoped it vanished as quickly as it had come. What if this had been building up for some time? What if Morgana's long absence had pushed him over the edge and started deteriorating his mind, only to be noticed now? No. Arthur had to be more hopeful than that. He would never give up on his father. He was still breathing. He was still alive. There was still indeed hope.

Guinevère left Morgana's chambers feeling a bit off. Something was wrong with Morgana, but for the moment Guinevère was just going to say that Morgana was settling back in. She was tired. Frightened. She had been kidnapped and held there for a year! Guinevère could not imagine being gone that long. Besides, Morgana was worried for the king as well.
Guinevère turned down the hall that lead to the king's chambers and paused out side the door that was cracked open just a little. She pushed it open just slightly and peeked her head in, to see Arthur sitting beside his father's bed seeming deep in thought. She knew it would do him no good to sit here and watch his father suffer. She walked in a few steps and looked around before walking closer. She whispered, when she spoke so not to disturb the king. "Sire?" She did not know if the king could hear her, so she was not about to address him another way. The king was sick and he did not need this to push him over the edge. "I can sit with him if you'd like. So you can get some rest."

Arthur was so deep in thought he had noticed Gwen when she was already halfway in the room, and of course when she spoke. He quickly snapped out of his thoughts, silently clearing his throat as he looked up at her. "Guinevère," he greeted in a rather cordial manner. Morgana's disappearance had been rather hard for her as well and tensions had been high in the kingdom. This was not easy for anyone; and Arthur feared that people were going to lose their loyalty for the king if they saw him like this. He would have to find out what rumors were being said, and how quickly they were spreading throughout Camelot.
"No, thats fine," he assured her. He would not rest even if not by his father's side. He spoke in a low voice, though loud enough for her to hear him. "How is Morgana?" It was horrible indeed. After her and the king having been separated for so long, their reunion had been so short lived. He knew she had been rather upset as well, so did hope she was getting as much rest as she could.

Guinevère felt a little awkward being formal with him, however she knew this was how it was supposed to be. She needed to get more into practice and stop being so relaxed around him. He was the prince, and she was a servant. "She is sleeping. I think it will take some time before she can adjust to being safe and at home again." At lest that was what Guinevère hoped was wrong. She did not have a reason to think other wise.
After her kidnappings, both of which only lasted a few days. she had just wanted to sleep and rest. Morgana did not seem tired, but she seemed different. Guinevère was worried for her friend. She wanted to speak to Arthur more, as she was worried for him as well. His father being ill, but she knew better then to speak up here. She paused there for a moment before giving a bow of her head and turning so she could walk to the door. She wished so badly that she could comfort him, but if the king could hear them, she did not wish to get either of them in trouble.

Arthur gave a nod of acknowledgment when she said that Morgana was just resting. "Thats good," he said, a bit relieved that she was recuperating after her traumatizing experience. He had a few moments to speak with her shortly after her return and she seemed very disturbed. As she should be. He can not imagine what she had been through in the past year, so Arthur would hold into this one small piece of good news. Now all he was waiting for was his father to recover.
He watched Gwen head towards the door, and looked at her, knowing that he could not see her. He didn't want her to leave, but he did not want to leave his father's side either. "Guinevère," he suddenly called, not really sure what he was going to say. He knew it would be enough to make her stop from leaving, but only very temporarily. He also did not want to say too much, with his father lying hear for all he knew, could hear every word. Just as he once had when he was severely wounded and Guinevère had offered comforting words. He did not want his father to find out about them this way. "Has Gaius checked on Morgana today?" It was not really a random question, since they had just been on the topic of her. But it was something he said to mask what he really wanted to say to her.

Guinevère turned to look at Arthur after he called her name, and she wondered what he would say. She knew better then to hope for anything personal, but every word from him ofter held the hope she needed to keep going. "No, Sire, he has not but he has assured everyone that Lady Morgana is fine. All she needs is some rest and some time before she will be able to relax and accept that she is home."
Guinevère's heart held some doubt for some reason as to that, but she was not going to spread worry where ever she went. She was just being paranoid. Worrisome. Everyone was so over something it seemed right now. She watched him silently for a moment before speaking up again. "Can I bring you anything, my lord? Something from the kitchens, perhaps?" She knew it wasn't much but while he was at the king's side she could not offer more.

Gaius had also asusred Arthur that his father was fine, but he knew differently. He knew his father was far from fine. That something was gravely wrong. And he felt completely helpless to aid him in any way. There was nothing he could do, but sit here. Was there some sort of cure he could seek out and find? This was not a physical ailment, but a mental one and that was something that Arthur was definitely not used to seeing or helping to try and cure. "I hope the same can be said for the king," he said, giving his father a sad look.
He looked back at her when she offered to get something for him. "No, I'm alright." He had absolutely not appetite. While he still did not want her to leave, he still was not sure what to say to make her stay. It was easier when they were alone; and yet he wished it did not have to be that way. He wanted to think of something, but also wondered if it would just be keeping her here when she probably had a great deal to do. So he just sat in silence, seeing what her next action would be.

Guinevère knew he was going to be stubborn about this, for he was worried and that was how Arthur got at time. Besides, if it had been her father, she would not have left his side either. She gave him a soft smile and walked around the bed to claps his hand for a moment. She gave it a soft squeeze.
After a long moment, she let his hand go, gave a small dip of her head in a bow, and turned to walk out. she did not want to leave him but if the king could hear then staying to long, or saying the wrong thing would draw to much attention. She pauses at the door to look back at him, before giving him a soft smile and then walking out of the room. She knew what it was life to see your father ill, and being unable to help. She did not wish that feeling on anyone.

What had he done?! A million thoughts and questions were racing through his mind, questioning his judgment and decisions. Had he done the right thing? Had he just condemned the kingdom? He felt as if he had done what he felt would be best, but with others arguing his choice, it made him wonder. What would his father have done? He did not want to show weakness and give Camelot that reputation. But he did not want his people to due because of Camelot's pride. Arthur was horribly conflicted. He did not even know if he had made the right decision, sitting in his father's chair and accepting the role of acting king. But what choice did they have?
He gazed out the window, lost in thought and terribly fearful of the fate of Camelot. Had his father made this decision, it would have been very different. But Arthur was feeling far too much pressure and stress at this moment. If this is what it took to be king, would he ever be ready? Did others trust him? Would they show that same loyalty to him that they showed his father? He needed the king to be in good mental health again so that he could continue to lead the kingdom and Arthur could continue to learn from him. He could never admit how horribly fearful he was though. When he made his decision, he had done so with confidence and sureness, and acted as if he was so certain that what he was doing was the right thing to do. When in actuality, he was reluctant, insecure, and terrified.
Hearing a bit of a knock at the door, distracted him from his thoughts as he turned to see who it was.

Word was spreading like wild fire, and even if you lived under a rock you knew what was coming. War. Guinevère finished making sure Morgana was prepared for bed and then she left. It was awkward, this distance between them. She'd heard from another that Arthur had taken his father's seat and given orders meant to protect them.
As she walked past an open door, she paused seeing the prince standing there looking out his window. She looked up and down the hallway for a moment before knocking and entering. He looked like he was lost in thought, or had wanted to be alone. She knew this was weighing heavy on him and wish that there was some bit of good news she could bring him that would lift him up. "I am sorry." She glanced back at the door wondering if she should go, "I did not wish to brother you."

When he saw who it was, he was immediately relieved and glad to see her. She was the one person who he would never reject the company of and someone he would never not want to see. With everything that had been happening the past couple of days, he had not had much time and therefore, not spoken to her. That did not mean she was not constantly on his mind . . . for she was. Almost every moment, even when his father was ill, and the kingdom at war . . . his thoughts of her were constant.
He found himself wondering what she thought of his decision. Did she agree? Disagree like most others probably did? "No, thats alright. He said, controlling his tone and composure so that the urgency he was feeling for his need for her to stay was not as evident. "Please, stay," He added, turning so that he was fully looking at her thought he did not yet take a step towards her.

Guinevère watched him as she walked into his room. He looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and not just the fate of the kingdom he loved so much. But for Arthur they might as well be one and the same. She knew how his father's health was troubling for him. And wished there was something she could do to help him get well. She'd heard from Merlin that it had been magic doing it; and that the king would be well soon. She hoped so for Arthur's sake.
Part of her wanted him to be king now, and rule this kingdom the way she knew he would; but she knew what it was life to loose a father and she would not wish that sadness on any one. Especially Arthur. "How is your father?" She asked, wondering if he was indeed getting well, or if this was something he worried about still.

How was he? Arthur wished he knew. Gaius seemed to think he was getting better but Arthur still could not understand the explanation of his sudden outburst. It made him terribly worried and now here he was, ruling a kingdom as acting king. He was not ready and it just terrified him even more that if something sudden were to happen to his father . . . that he would not only be acting king, but permanent king of Camelot. Of course, these fears were ones that he could not show. Then again, he did not hide a lot from Gwen, especially where his emotions were concerned.
"Gaius tells me he is doing better," Arthur said, still unsure if he was convinced of this fact. He looked at her before looking down at the table of scattered with papers. "I could do with him here though." He added in a solemn voice.

She could tell he was worried, and she wished she knew how to help him. She knew nothing of ruling a kingdom; but she trusted in him and knew he would do what was best for the kingdom and the people he loved so dearly. "You should have more faith in yourself." She told him, "Worry is not a wise council. I trust you, more then Uther more then any man. You have to do what you feel is right." She told him, wanting to at lest help him believe in him self if possible.
She had always looked forward to seeing Arthur as king of Camelot; and getting a glimpse of that now was not disappointing. Yes, she wished his father was well, and this worry was not on his heart but seeing him stepping up made her so proud and glad at the same time. She knew this was a small look at what everyone was waiting for; King Arthur Pendragon of Camelot

Arthur listened carefully to her words. There was indeed some comfort in hearing them. Her words were always filled with sincerity and not that false assurance that others felt obligated to give him. Still. It did not alleviate any of the pressure and insecurity he was feeling in the decisions that he was making for the entire kingdom. Would his father have done this? Would he have made a bolder move? Was Arthur just showing how weak he was as a leader?
"I've committed everyone to a siege." He said, assuming that she had already heard the news but saying it anyway. He looked at her, worry in his tone even if his expression looked composed. "There will be causalities." There had already been so many deaths in the past year, starting straight from the dragon attacks, to the desperate search for Morgana, to all the battles that occurred since then. Would it never end. "What are the people saying?" He asked, wondering if they thought his decision was wise and they would therefore be supportive of it. Or if they thought it was completely ridiculous and therefore their mistrust for him grew.

He was always worried about what the people thought. Uther would not be so, he would act and not care what others thought or how he made them feel. Arthur was always wondering what the people thought, what his father thought, if he was doing a good job. Shew knew that he would never be harsh with the people because he cared; and he cared allot. She often wondered how Uther raised Arthur. Then again; he had been a jerk before Merlin came.
"They are glad you have taken charge," She told him, stepping closer to touch his arm. She did so with out thinking; only reacting. She was getting to informal with him and it was going to get them caught. She did not think of his now however, just of him. "You have to forget everything else, and do what -you- believe is right."

Arthur continued to listen to her, relieved to hear her say that they were glad he had taken his father's position. It was more truthful when he heard it from someone who the people spoke openly in front of. He felt that sometimes what he believed was right, was not actually the right choice. And that in the end, the people would suffer and it would be at the expense of their pain that he realized his mistaken. This was where the pressure came in. No matter what decision he made, there would be casualties and there would be those who strongly disagreed with him. Every day, he was learning more and more about the strength one had to possess in being king.
He remained silent, looking down to see her hand resting on his arm. An even more comforting action. He looked at it for a few seconds before bringing his hand up and resting it right on top of hers. A silent way to keep her hand there, and an innocent way to touch her and have that closeness to her. He then looked at her, his eyes locked on her beautiful face, as he began to have lingering thoughts; familiar ones about how much he wanted to lean in. He had been doing that fairly frequently though in the past year, he felt that they rarely had any time to be in each others company, and only each others. So moments such as these were even more precious to him.

She glanced down at their touching hands and then up at his face and she knew that had been a mistake. She should have not crossed that line between prince and servant. She was becoming to familiar with him, and she knew that would only cause both of them more trouble then they were looking for at this point. She slide her hand out from under his, wishing she did not have to.
Stepping back she looked up at him and then kept backing up. "I should go, Sire." She told him, trying to be more formal then she normally would. She needed to place the distance between them that she was forgetting about. She wanted to be close to him but if she did not start to watch ehr self then she was going to bring them more . . . well, more then what was.

He wished she had not moved her hand, but he understood why she felt the need to. Anyone could walk, and while they said that they had to maintain that distance, even if they did physically, Arthur knew he could not emotionally. He could not just pretend that the feelings he had for her did not exist. It was far too great a denial, and one that he would never engage in. Not only had she removed her hand, but she said that she had to leave, putting a title on at the end of the statement.
Again, he wished she did not, but understood why she felt the need to. At others he would demand a title, demand to be spoken to with respect . . . but with her, it was not necessary. Why? Because it was painful to hear. It was as if there was emphasis on their class differences and thus, their greatest obstacle in being together. He did not like this reminder, even if it was always there. "There's no need to call me that," He said, vocalizing how much he wished she could just refer to him by his first name, and therefore, avoid the stress placed on titles.

She turned in surprise when he said that, and she just watched him for a half moment before she brought her self to reply. "There is every need, sire." She said it softly, trying not to make it harsh but making sure it was there. She loved him for telling her she did not have to but if she allowed her self to be that informal then she would get into the habit of it and she did not wish to ruin everything.
She gave a smaller then normal head tilt of a bow, so not to rub it in, but to be formal and turned to leave. She did not want to leave him, but with his door open, anyone could walk by and see them. They would wonder why Morgana's servant girl was in the prince's room at night.
