Guinevère was cleaning Morgana's room, thinking over the conversation she had just had with Arthur. Even if the queen asks that the servants not clean as much, Guinevère was going to make sure Morgana's chambers were spotless. It was Guinevère's small way of rebelling against the queen. Even if no one would know that was what she was doing.
She picked up the dirty sheets and went to take them to get washed while getting clean ones from below. As she was approached the servants only areas of the castle she noticed more and more that a few servants were standing around looking horrid. Guinevère walked up to a few so she could ask what was wrong however before she could speak they spoke first. 'Is it true, Gwen?! Is the prince dead?'
Guinevère felt her heart beat painfully in her chest, and she dropped her basket of clothing she had just been holding. "I--I--I-b-b-b-eg your pardon?! What has happened?!" She barly got out.
'Amira the maid who cleans the royal hall over heard Giuas telling the king that the young prince was just found dead in his chambers! Have you not heard?'
Guinevère stood there for a moment before turning to run up the steps, she arrived just shortly after Uther had. She stood in the servants door, and covered her mouth as she watched the king cry over his fallen son. Guinevère felt her world stopping and her heart breaking. NO! NO! Arthur had just been so full of life. He had been yelling and trying to turn things around. He had been ALIVE!
She held her breath so no one would hear her sobs, She could hear the new queen trying to pull the king away. Had the troll queen done this?! Guinevère looked over and noticed something . . . Uther seemed just as shocked and repelled by her as everyone else!
Guinevère heard someone coming up the steps behind her and she ducked behind some of the hangings in Arthur's room just as Merlin entered from the servants steps. He waited until Uther had called the guards before he ran to Arthur's side and . . . . what was Merlin doing?!
The confusion was enough that Guinevère had only momentarily stopped her sobbing even while her heart was breaking. When Arthur began to stir and even got up to fight for his father's life she felt something she had never quite felt before. A joy so strong she only cried more. Her eyes were so filled with tears that she thought she hear Merlin say something, a whisper but by the time she cleared them and opened her eyes, she only saw Arthur stabbing the troll. It was a horridly awful smell that filled the room.
Guinevère could not leave the room, with out giving her self away so she stood there, waiting for everyone to leave first. It was a while before it was so. As first the guards checked on their king, and then servants were called to drag the body out, and start getting the smell out of the room. After what felt like forever, and silence filled the room, Guinevère stuck her head out. Only to see Arthur alone in the room. She waited a moment before running to him, and wrapping her around around him. "I believed them." She whispered, burring her face into this shirt "I believed them when they told me you were dead!"

As soon as they said he would have the appearance of someone dead, Arthur was very reluctant about this whole plan. But he could not risk the safety of Camelot because his father was married . . . to . . . a . . . troll. If Arthur was not so concerned about the kingdom, he would have burst out laughing at the thought of all this. If everything worked out, then he probably would. He just hoped this ridiculous sounding plan worked. Otherwise . . . he may die for nothing. And if Merlin did not give him the antidote, then he would most certainly die. But, everything in the end worked out. Merlin gave him the liquid just in time for him to stand up and fight off the evil troll from his father, who now seemed in shock about what was going on.
That mean the spell worked! Her strange little henchman was also putting up a fight, but it did not take too long for both of them to die. Once Arthur stabbed the troll . . . a horribly foul smell filled the room. Everyone was trying not to throw up. He covered his mouth and when she was dead, he motioned for the guards to take out the body. He then looked at his father. He just looked at him. Uther looked back. And after a moment's stare, he quickly left the room. He looked completely disgusted and why shouldn't he . . . he had been sharing his bed with a troll for the past few days!
Arthur looked at Merlin, thanking him by just nodding his head. He would give him a proper thank you later, but right now, he just wanted the troll to be taken out so that he could catch his breath and not have to hold it anymore. When everyone was gone, Arthur remained by himself for a few moments . . . or that was what he thought. Very shortly after the room was vacant except for him, Gwen suddenly came and ran into his arms. He was surprised, but her presence would never be an unpleasant one. He put his arms around her tightly when he heard what she said. He had never wanted her to find out about this . . . he had not even thought about who may have heard about his 'death', no matter how temporary it was.
He pulled away slightly so that he could see her face. She had been crying. He had made her cry! "I am so sorry Guinevère," he said, brushing aside a loose strand of hair from her cheek. "I didn't want you to have found out, or even seen what happened. It was just to break the curse that my father was under. I apologize that it upset you. I should have told you about it, but it all happened rather quickly." He would never have felt obligated to tell anyone else, or apologize for having to do something to protect Camelot . . . but he needed to say it to Gwen. He loved her too much to allow himself to be the reason she was so upset. And she would not have run to him like this if she had not been.

"A cruse?" Guinevère asked but she already knew. No one had said anything about Uther being under a spell but she could see that now. How else would you explain his actions. You could not. She felt rather silly now, for not having thought of it sooner. Leave it to Arthur to keep a clear head and be able to handle things. Guinevère did not want to pull back from him but she knew someone could enter at any moment. She should not risk them getting caught but could not force her self to move backwards.
It did not make complete since either, "You had to die to break the cruse?" Or not die. Pretend die. "You faked your death. Everyone below in the servants hall was so upset. When they told me I ran here not believing it until I saw your father hugging you and crying. I thought I would die too in that moment." She knew these words were forbidden, she could not say. "I should go and tell them there was a mistake." But she still did not move. Did not want to move.

This was going to be one of those things that everyone was going to laugh about behind Uther's back . . . Arthur included. Right now though, he was not going to laugh until Guinevère was feeling less . . . upset about what had to be done to lift the curse. "I am so sorry Guinevère. It happened so quickly. Gaius and Merlin told me that the only way to break the enchantment was if he were to cry, and they figured the only way to do this . . . was my death." He did not think it was going to work, since his father's last words to him led him to believe that he no longer cared for his son.
"I truly did not want to upset you. I had not even thought about others reactions. All I could think about was protecting Camelot from the troll." He had not had time to think the whole thing through. He had been lucky enough to find out about the antidote. "I did not mean to cause you any pain," he repeated. While she said she had to go, he hoped she didn't. He hoped that she stayed here, just for a moment longer because such moments like these were extremely rare. Oddly enough, they only seemed possible when something went terribly wrong.

Guinevère held on him him while he spoke, and slowly felt her racing heart slow. (Though when he spoke so kindly to her, it did not slow to much). She was so glad he was alive but reason was coming back to her slowly. "You do not need to explain. I am simply very glad to find you alive. I feared the worse." And she had. She had known he was to alive the last time she had saw him for his death to be natural. She had feared someone had helped him along. She had been right but she never would have guessed that someone would be Merlin!
"I am also glad that you free-ed your father. Surely now we know that his actions were not his own? They were just the spells?" She was asking more then telling him, "He will name you his heir again?" She hoped for Arthur and for Camelot that was true. Uther needed an heir and Arthur had just killed the kings wife, the former heir. For a few hours, Arthur had not been a prince, and for a few hours there had been hope for them. Now he would be a prince again, and there was rules between them. Guinevère could not bring her self to be truly sad over these turn of events. Camelot needed Arthur, and she could never be the reason they lost him.

He did feel the need to explain it to her before it happened, but he was not going to argue. Everything worked out for the best. He was alive. The troll was dead. His father was free from the spell. Camelot would be in safe hands once again. "I do believe so. The troll had been using a strange spell on him. Judging from his reaction when the spell was broken, and his lack of remorse when I killed her, the spell has been broken." When Gwen brought up him being reinterhirted, that was when Arthur remembered about that whole thing . . . about how his father acted towards him.
"I believe so. I mean, he has not said as much but I doubt he remembers all of his actions. I'm sure they will slowly come back to him." Which was going to be both a good thing and a bad thing. "Seems you were right Guinevère. I should not have lacked so much faith in him. I should have believed you when you reassured me." When he had gone to her and ranted about everything, he was convinced that his father no longer cared for him. She had tried to convince him otherwise, and so he would keep this in mind for next time.

Guinevère smiled when he said she had been right. It made her feel better knowing he no longer doubted in his father. "I am sure he will correct his mistakes soon. I do not know him well, but I hope he offers you some fort of an apology and thank you as well. You saved his life, the kingdom as well by risking your own. It was no a small thing you did. I hope he realizes it."
"I will admit, when I came in the room and saw you father crying over you . . . . you were not moving . . . " She closed her eyes to keep the emotions at bay, "I thought you were lost. I never thought I would feel sorry for the king, but I did. My heart was broken, and yet it was breaking again for him. No one should lose a family member like that. I know all to well how the loss is. I would not wish that on anyone. Even the king." . . . . . "Especially the king."

Arthur hoped his father took back his previous actions. "Well I certainly didn't do it on my own. It was after all Gaius and Merlin's idea . . . I would have had no clue what to do in order to break the curse he was under." Gaius always surprised him with his knowledge of sorcery and what not. It was always of great use too. "He does not need to apologize," his father had far too much pride for that sometimes. And in this case, even if he had been wrong, he had also been under the influence of magic and could therefore, not be entirely blamed for his actions. "I think he's been through quite a bit already." He had after all been sleeping with a troll . . . that was certainly traumatizing enough. He would have laughed a little had their next conversation not had such a grave subject.
He pulled her into another hug. He deeply regretted not having told her and even more so when it reminded her of the pain over her own loss. "I wish you never had to experience a loss such as that, and I truly wish I had not caused you to remember what loss feels like." He knows that seeing him dead, was nothing compared to her father's death. The death of a father was something unimaginable and Arthur feared the day he would have to experience that. Its why he felt so bad for what Guinevère had to go through . . . because of his own father. "Whatever happened, the worst is over now. You never need to fear for me. Apparently, I don't die that easily," he said, trying to lighten the mood with a bit of a joke, since he had in fact had many near death experiences and yet. . . he was still alive. "I just should have done more to ease your mind about any worry you would have had over our unexpected plan." He would feel guilty for that; even if he did not have time to tell her, he should have made time so that she did not have to witness anything that caused her such grief.

Guinevère knew his words to be true but did not find comfort in them. The king should public apologize to his son for this. She knew he would not, but she wished he would. It seemed that every time the king publicly shamed his son, nothing was done to show that the king was wrong. They just ignored it. "He might have been though enough, but I will still hope that he apologizes to you. Even in privet. I think after risking your life, and faking your death that you have earned something."
"I know. Between you and Merlin I am forever worried on which one of you will risk you life this time, or which might fail in the risking." She worried for Lancelot as well, but dared not speak his name while here alone and with in Arthur's arms. "You two seemed determined to die for one another." She tried to joke, not pulling away from the hug. She loved the feel of his strong arms around her. Made her feel warm and safe. As if nothing could hurt her. "You did not have to. You can not run to be every time you have to do something." Even if she wanted him to.

"My actions have only served my title justice." As a knight of Camelot, he swore an oath to protect the people and king, and that was what he had done. He did not expect reward. It was reward for him to rest assured that he had done everything within his power to make everyone in the kingdom safe. "The thought that he is alive, is enough of a earned reward." He was not trying to sound selfless. He was genuinely relieved. He had helped his king, his father, and now he could have that peace of mind.
Arthur gave a bit of a smile when she pointed out how keen they were to die for one another. From the moment Merlin drank the poison for Arthur, to when he drank the goblet during his test of purity . . . to many more moments beyond that. It was strange, but it was also something Arthur never hesitated in doing, and he knew Merlin did not either. He did not want Gwen to worry so much, but he understood the feeling for he could completely relate. "Be more concerned for Merlin. I've seen him with a sword. His chances of surviving dangerous environments are not too high." Arthur too was joking around, for Merlin did not prove his bravery with a sword. He had shown it many other ways, and Arthur was of course, not blind to this. They had a strong loyalty to one another, and had been becoming more and more apparent to others. "I would protect you with just as little reluctance." Those were the kinds of decisions that he never second guessed, for even if he were to die because of them one day, he would never regret it.
"There are certain things, certain explanations that I owe you . . . to spare you any grief that you may feel." He could not help it. He felt just as obligated to explain things to the woman he loved, as he did to protect the kingdom. It was a different king of obligation of course, but never the less, he did feel the necessity to keep her in the know, so that she would not have to worry.

She would not comment on his father needed to show signs of remorse again. She wished he would, of course, for his son's sake but knew better then to speak against the king to his own son. Even if they were growing closer, and speaking freely towards each other, there was some lines Guinevère would never cross. Even if the imposable happened and they could be together openly, she would not cross that line out of respect for the son, rather then respect of the father's rank.
She wanted to tell Arthur she was not his to protect but, in truth she knew she was. Both as a citizen of Camelot and . . . because her heart belonged to him. She did not want him to die for her, but she liked knowing that he was there. With Arthur as prince, she was safe. "You can not run a kingdom while checking your ever move with a servant. Next time I will not jump to believe the worse until I have heard it from someone I trust. Unless Merlin tells me himself. Hopefully, you will not have to fake your death again, however."

Her words were, once again, a painful reminder of the status difference and biggest obstacle of them being together. He would not however, just let it go. If he was able to let it go, he would not be here right now with her, speaking to her so openly, and expressing his concern for her. "Not a servant," he began to say. He would not seek the approval of a servant, but she was obviously more than that to him. "A woman that I care a great deal for." He respected her opinions, even if he did not always agree with them. He knew they came from a good place, and it was one of the reasons that he could see her as a perfect Queen that could rule Camelot fairly and justly. Of course, right now, that was just a dream that felt so out of reach. "I hope I will not have to either," he added, breaking his intent gaze at her. "Thats true, leave it to Merlin. He usually knows when I'm in danger and when I'm not . . . its a little disturbing at times." Merlin had after all been the first to tell him that his temporary mother in law was a troll! He hated it when that idiot was right. "I hope nothing will ever come to having to fake someone's death again. Its too risky." After all, what if Arthur had not gotten the antidote in time? While he did trust Merlin . . . it was still a legitimate what if question.

She felt a silent thrill at his words, and a smile spread on her face. He seemed to want to tell and share things with her. She thought back to that secret conversation she had held with Lancelot not long ago. He had told her things might come to this. Told her Arthur would began to share things with her. Her honest smile became softer and less true as she saw that Lancelot was right. She had almost left with him that night, would have if he had been less honorable.
Now she saw what he saw. Things would never be between her and the prince, but they were heading to a deeper, more powerful place. Could be been the princes' mistress? Working as a servant by day and spending her nights in sin with him? No, she could never do that, but as Lancelot had explained, even honor would suffer one day. "You are very luckily to have Merlin as a friend. He seemed to think the same of you." Even the king seemed to have questioned that relationship at times. Why Arthur would die for his servant. The king never seemed to question Merlin dieing for the prince however.

Arthur rarely spoke fondly of his relationship with Merlin, though his actions dictated how much he valued him. And Arthur knew that Gwen was aware of this . . . everyone seemed to be, perhaps even his father. "I'm not sure if lucky is the right word." He was making fun of his servant, but at the same time, he knew what she said was true . . . Arthur did feel lucky for Merlin had helped him in ways that exceeded his duties as a servant. "But he has indeed helped me more times than I can count."
Arthur did not feel the need to go into detail over all those times. "This for instance. If he had not gotten the remedy to counter the first substance they had given me, we would not be having this conversation." Funny how Merlin had failed to mention that small 'unimportant' detail. "And he was after all the first one to warn me about Katrina. He had said she was a troll . . . I thought he meant it as an insult, not literally."

That was frightening. knowing that if Merlin had failed then Arthur would be dead. "I will make sure to thank Merlin then, perhaps with a supper invitation . . . I could make him his favorite." She said softly as she held on to him. Merlin had never said anything, but Guinevère wondered if Merlin knew how she felt about Arthur. He sometimes just sent approving looks. Guinevère knew in this, Merlin held no odd feelings for what they had almost been. It was nice to know that she had not hurt that friendship, like she had with Lancelot.
"As did I for a while. Perhaps we should start taking him litterly for now on." She joked as if Merlin was a child and they his parents, "He's a good kid." And teased trying to lighten the air. She was still reeling from the thoughts of Arthur being dead. "Maybe tonight someone else should much out the stables."

Arthur gave a hint of a smile as she started planning to do something kind for Merlin. To invite him over, plan a meal. "Let me know when you decide to do that. I will be sure to give him the night free from his duties." He would do it for Gwen, more than for Merlin . . . that did not mean deep down, Arthur thought Merlin didn't deserve it. He just didn't show it. Guinevère was different though. She would of course, go out of her way to express her gratitude, where as Arthur's expression of this mostly consisted of a few words, an awkward look, and it was forgotten.
"He has his moments," Arthur agreed loosely, though he did fully agree with her words. "I guess I could relieve him of that duty . . . just for tonight though. I can't have that job open for too long. And plus, I don't want him to get too spoiled." Arthur said, somewhat kidding.

"Per--" She paused for a moment, as if debating on wither or not to say something then keeping speaking, "Perhaps it will be a night you are able to slip away as well." She said softly then gave a shrug of her shoulders as if to make it seem like a casual statement, or one that did not have as much meaning behind it as they both know it would.
"I doubt you would ever let Merlin grow spoiled." She reassured him. "I am sure you will find something else to keep his hands busy with. Between you and Gaius, Merlin works enough for two people and still has time to save his prince from evil step mothers." She knew it to be true, but she said it as a joke. Most servants were over worked and under paid, it was something she was hoping that when Arthur was king would help correct. Give the people more money, so they could buy more and in turn be able to do more. Farmers could buy more seed, plant more crops and make more money.

Arthur wanted to, he really did. He wished it could be that easy, that he could leave whenever he pleased and visit Guinevère. But it was not that simple. He didn't want to say a flat out no, because it was only a painful, vocal reminder of why their relationship was more complicated than he would have liked it to be. "I think if I'm there, it won't be much of a night off for Merlin." He was trying to make a joke about his absence, since he could not commit to being there. That, and he wondered if it would be strange for the three of them to have a meal, especially with Arthur knowing the truth about them, as he was the only one (besides Lancelot).
He did not blame her for defending his servant . . . it was natural; they were friends. But at the same time, Arthur never really eased up on Merlin. It was far too fun, and necessary. "Sometimes I don't know how he gets it all done, but he does. Which is why I have confidence in him that he can handle a great list of chores . . . he is so used to it by now, that he would be rather bored if he had nothing to do. Besides, keeping him busy keeps him out of trouble." Arthur was of course just playfully mocking Merlin.

"No, Merlin sees you as a friend. I bet if would shock him to see you sitting at the same table eating the same food." She encouraged, "Maybe one night you can tell everyone your going hunting and spend a few hours with Merlin and I. I could plan the dinner for then. I would serve you both." She knew he had been trying to gently let her down, a prince would not eat at his servant's table even if he was brave enough to openly call them friends. He would be laughed at for doing it.
"Poor Merlin. What did he ever do to anyone to have earned your friendship," She joked backed, knowing that Arthur saw Merlin as more then just a servant. It was why he had gotten him out of Camelot before anything could happen to him. Merlin and Arthur always looked out for one another, she was glad they had each other.

Sitting at the same table . . . eating the same food . . . the way she phrased it, and the way he pictured it, only emphasized the class difference. And while he always stressed it in front of Merlin, Guinevère was one person he hated saying such things too. It was too painful to think about, for it was the major obstacle in allowing them to be together. Her suggestion to lie about his whereabouts only made him feel worse. He would have to lie to spend time with her. He hated the thought of that. It should not be such a way. But it also showed him that she truly did want him to join them for the dinner, as unfamiliar as the situation would be.
"It should not be too much of a shock to him, since, he knows . . . " About them. So far, he was the only one. "I'll be able to get away for a few hours," he told her, not wanting to admit that he would indeed have to lie about it. It would be worth it if he got to spend time with her, but . . . still.
