Arthur had not expected her to react that way, but it was of course better than what he had expected. He kept his eyes closed a little bit longer after the kiss ended, and opened them when she spoke. He lowered his gaze though. Merlin would never know just how grateful Arthur was for what he did. He would never be able to express that utmost gratitude. "You have nothing to apologize for regarding this." He didn't want her to apologize for him, or pity him and his inability to control his emotions. He was glad to hear that she was not trying to justify his attack on his father. He had not wanted that, and she was not trying to tell him that what he had done was okay.
"She not only wanted to bring down the king, but to see the kingdom in chaos." Since thats what would have happened if he killed his father. What would the knights have done? How would any the citizens have trusted him if he assassinated his own father? "She is manipulative, and cruel, and I fear for Morgana more than ever." It was why he was so desperate to find her, and why he would never forgive himself until he did.
Her confidence that he would not have killed his father only made him more embarrassed. "Guinevère, I had ever intention of forcing that blade into his throat." His hesitation had been much too brief. "I wish I could believe that I would not have, but at that moment, I was so filled with rage, his death was the only thing that consumed my thoughts and clouded my judgment." He was afraid, literally afraid to think of what would have happened if Merlin had not forced his way inside. "What kind of son, trusts the words of a sorcerer over his own father." While he was not going to cry, his tone was filled with agonizing sorrow. He owed his father everything, and this was how he repaid him.

What king of son trust the word of a sorcerer over his father? "The kind of son who believes in people, and trusts others. And mostly . . . " Her voice grew gentle and comforting, ". . . the type of son who misses his mother, and wanted her to be real enough that he would believe anything." She knew that his mother had died like hers had, and knew how it was to not have a mother.
"I think, I of all people have a chance at understanding how you felt. My mother died when I was born to. I could not imagine what it had to be like to see her." Guinevère wanted him to keep talking about it until he came to accept it better, this no speaking of it rule that the king or Arthur had given out could only hurt them. "What did your mother look like?"

Arthur was still not convinced. "Trusting so easily is far too dangerous. I lacked judgment. I was naive, and foolish to take the word of a sorcerer over my own father. That is not how a future king should act." Arthur was going to go into detail about how his father had been the sole parent raising him, and how much he respected him . . . but when Guinevère mentioned that her mother had died when she was born as well, he hesitated. She lost her father too, and he was not about to wave the role of a father in her face, when hers was no longer alive. "I'm sorry that you can relate, since I wouldn't wish that on anyone. But I'm rather certain you would have not reacted so . . . viciously." Arthur not only attacked his father, he had taken the proper steps too; throwing the gauntlet, drawing his sword, nearly killing him. It was a thought out process; not too impulsive, which only disturbed Arthur even more.
Her next question made him smile a little, even though his tone held great mournfulness. "She was beautiful," he said in a low voice. His mind went back to what she had looked like.m How could have Morgause known? Because even if Arthur had never seen her, he instantly recognized her as his mother . . . as the Lady Ygraine. "Fair, light skin. Golden hair. An aura of elegance and kindness." He quickly snapped out of his thoughts, looking at Gwen. "I feel like I knew her, even though I did not. How could an illusion created by magic, be so . . . accurate, and feel so real?" He did not expect her to have the answer, but he could not help but ask the question. He would never talk about this again, to anyone. It was hard enough for him to talk about it now, and was literally forcing himself to give the details of that horrible day.

"We will never know how I might have reacted. Perhaps I have a vengeful streak, that neither of us knows about." she tried to joke, "I must have gotten some of Morgana rubbed off in me with almost ten years as her handmaiden." She gave a slight tease trying to help him relax, but then grew silent as he spoke of his mother. Guinevère felt slightly jealous of the event even if it was born of evil and ended horridly.
"I do not know what my mother looked like. I often wonder." She spoke softly, "At lest you have something from this. You know what she looked like, and can carry that with you. You can keep that part close to your heart Arthur, and let the rest go. Do not keep blaming your self and start forgiving. Once you have done that, you can think clearer then thinking about her. If you do not then she is still winning."

Arthur couldn't imagine Guinevère ever threatening someone's life, or even come remotely close to killing someone she loved. "I highly doubt that," he said as he gave a slight smile. He knew she was joking, but he could not encourage a joke that was just so . . . unlikely. "You are far more calm and rational than both of us. I'm not sure what we would do if we did not have you there to comfort us." He knew it was a fair assumption to make that Morgana turned to Gwen when she was troubled, as they were good friends. Arthur of course, did the same.
While he knew she was right, it was far too difficult to do. "I'm sorry," he apologized realizing that perhaps he should be lucky to have even caught a glimpse of his mother when she had no memory of hers, and did not even have a father to tell Gwen of her. "It is too difficult to think of her, without thinking about what I almost did to my father." Had Morgause forever tainted Arthur's memory of Ygraine? "Either way, she has won some way in another." She had Morgana, and feared how she was manipulating her. "What do you know of your mother?" He asked, wondering if Tom had talked about her more willingly than Uther does.

"With time, Perhaps you will be able to think on this with ease." She told him, "Maybe once you have gotten a better handle on the memory you will take what you need from it and let the rest go." She hoped he could, his thoughts of his mother should not be ones tainted with this evil touching it. They should be happy, if they could. Peaceful ones.
"My mother." She said slowly, and trailed off at the end. She did not know any memories of her mother. She only knew her father. He had been both parents to her. When she was frightened and in danger, he was the father; the one who chases shadows away. When she was sick, and feeling emotional, he was the mother; the one who was kind and had soft words meant to entourage her. "I have no memories of my mother. No stories." Her father had taken everything with him when he died.

Arthur hoped he could. Right now, it was too soon . . . too recent . . . too freshly embedded in his mind. And with her having taken Morgana, he could only focus on the cruelty of Morgause rather than be willing to let what she did go. He listened as she spoke of her mother . . . well, not really. She seemed like she had been at just as much of a loss as he had, prior to this encounter with Morgause. His heart did ache for her in that sense. He knew what it was like to have no memories, and with her father being dead . . . there was no hope to hear stories from him. He wondered whether to ask if there was anyone else who could have known her mother, but he advised himself against it. It was not an easy topic to discuss, it had been difficult enough for him to force out.
"I'm sorry," he said in a sincere voice. He was not sure what he was sorry about. The fact that he had no tried harder to prevent her from being an orphan. Or maybe because he felt sympathy to her for not having been able to get to know her mother. "I wish I had something more to offer you rather than just words of condolence," he said rather honestly, and regretfully since he had nothing to ease her pain.

Guinevère gave him a soft smile, before giving him a light shrug as if trying to down play it. Making it not as dramatic as it sounded. "My brother might have some, but he is not here to share them. Maybe one day." She knew this was a hard topic for them both and she did nto want to add more sadness to this day.
"What will we do now?" She asked, knowing they would began to screech for Morgana, but not sure how many of his knights were awake and how long before he would ride out. She also used the word we, so he would not feel so alone but they both would know what she meant, what would HE do now? It rested on him for this and she wished she could share that with him but knew she could not.

Her . . . what?! "Brother?" He asked, having had no clue that she had a brother. Where was he? Where had he been when Tom was killed? What was her relationship with him? Arthur took an interest in all such things because of his concern for Gwen. She had been alone in this time, no family around her; where had he been? Maybe he had a legitimate reason for his absence but then again, maybe not. The tone of his question was surprised, but calm . . . as he was not sure if her brother was a sore subject, and would only cause her more grief.
Arthur had no answer for her next question. He did not know. He was not sure where to go from here. "I must start a search for Morgana." He would have to briefly ensure everyone was in good health and the kingdom was stable -- and awake -- once again. "Before she is gone for too long," he added, praying that it would not take too long to find her. But Morgause was tricky; that much was for sure.

Guinevère heard him ask about her brother was decided that some conversations were best left for another time. Her history was something that no many knew, and even less knew details. Perhaps time would tell the true story but for now, this was not the time to dwell on things. She could not even speak her brother's name. (cause I don't know it!)
She knew he was going to push himself to find Morgana, and she wished she could help him by giving him more information. "I will look around her room, see if there is anything the woman left here for Morgana that might give us a clue to where she'd gone to." Though Guinevère doubted that she would find anything, for she was the one who cleaned this room every day. There was a faint sound coming from outside, but with everything in chos she did not think twice about it.

Her silence in regards to her brother assured him that she was probably not ready to talk about him. Or perhaps did not know too much about him. After all, there was a reason he was not here with her, and was not there when her father passed away. "Thank you. Any help that you can give . . . would be greatly appreciated." He knew that Gwen wanted to find Morgana just as much as he did. The next few days would be difficult. Little did he know just how difficult they would truly be.
He was not that ready to ignore the sound coming from outside. It raised his curiousity, but not wanting to break from this moment, waited. Of course, the knocking on the door was enough to interrupt it anyway. He took a few steps away from her, and towards the door, when it was suddenly flung open and one of his knights stood there, literally out of breath.
"My Lord! There is a matter of great urgency."
He paused, looking at Guinevère, maybe wondering whether to continue. If it was that urgent then Guienvere would hear about it soon enough. "Go on," he said, waiting to hear what it was. What more could possibly go wrong?!
"The great Dragon my Lord. He has . . . escaped from imprisonment."
It was worse than Arthur had imagined. His eyes slightly widened. Did this mean he was out there, attacking the city? "We must gather immediately," he said, referring to all the knights. They needed to strategize because if it was as bad as Arthur feared, then they were going to need a grand plan indeed. The knight nodded and after another bow, hurried off to gather the others. Arthur waited a moment, allowing the information to sink in before returning his attention to Gwen. "I must go," he explained to her. "Stay in the castle Guinevère," he told her, and this time, it was not for him but for her own safety. "If the situation escalates then the castle will be the safest place in the city." He feared for everyone, but especially her. He had thought he lost her due to Morgause's attack and he was not willing to risk that again. This time, he had to do a better job of protecting her, and would do whatever he could to make sure she was safe.

Guinevère, who had still been kneeling on the floor, stayed were she was when Arthur stepped back and only lowered her head. It might appear she was just waking up, from the recent events. When the knights spoke her mouth feel open in shock and fear. Not fear for her self but for the prince, and the kingdom he loved so much. What would this mean for them? How would they recover from this? Dragons had been known as monsters who killed many! She did not have to be told to stay indoors, she knew it was her place.
Many were going to be injured in the fight, she knew she could seek out Gaius and offer to help him since Morgana was missing. . . . . Morgana. . . She stood up and looked up at the prince after his knight left them alone. She wanted to say so many things, but could not think of any of them. "Be careful." She begged, knowing he did not have time to stay and talk.

He gave a short nod when she warned him. "You too," he urged in a soft voice. What did this mean for the kingdom? How vulnerable would they be against a dragon's attack? With Morgana missing, how were they going to deal with this as well? The King. This was going to drive him mad. The possible destruction of the kingdom and his missing ward. What would he prioritize? There were far too many questions and he needed to acquire the answers, quickly.
Arthur took a deep breath and headed towards the door. He paused in the doorway, turning back to look at Guinevère. "I'll find her Guinevère," he said, swearing to both Gwen and himself. A time like this was when he imagined Gwen would really be impacted and miss the presence of her friend the most. And with that final promise, he turned to try to solve one problem at a time.

"I know." She whispered, after he had spoken to her. She stood there and watched him walk out before she raised her hands to cover her mouth as a wave of fear hit her. She knew that in the next few days, everything would be dangerous and many would be hurt and die. A dragon was to powerful, to dangerous. How did one kill such a beast she did not even began to know.
She was worried for Arthur, and the battles he would face next. She feared he could die in one of them, and wasn't quite sure how to handle it. She was also afield for Merlin, and Leon and the knights who would be out there with him. Not in the same was as the prince but still there was fear for them all.
