Guinevère had the morning to her self, and most the day free. It was rare Guinevère had a whole day off but today was one of them bright and sun shinning days. Guinevère guessed it could be in thanks to the king's new . . . . wife. She knew the woman was making things harder in Camelot and one of her 'changes' was that Guinevère not clean as much. It was odd but because of that she had some spare time.
Guinevère was arranging flowers that she had picked in a vase so it could be sat on the table. She hummed a soft folk song while she worked and it made her little home seem less silent. Guinevère thought back to times when the silence was filled with her father's talking and part of her longed for another voice to fill the room. Someone to help remove the silence.

Arthur was furious! Well, more confused then anything else, but still angry! Angry. Hurt. Bitter. How could his father do this?! Uther had been furious with him time and time again, but never had he threatened to disinherit him, and now . . . he had just done so. Arthur could not believe it. Had his father truly had enough of him? Did he care so little about his son? He knew that Katrina no doubt was influencing him, but knew his father not to be a weak man . . . so clearly, some of what he was doing was by his own choice. And the people of Camelot. They were going to suffer if Uther continued to make outrageous demands of them.
He could not believe this! What was going to become of the Kingdom?! Arthur could not stand by and watch it deteriorate but he had just lost the ability to do anything about it. He left the castle in a fury, needing fresh air to think and allow what just happened to sink in. He was no longer the Prince. He was disowned. Stripped of his titles. Would his father even permit his own son to continue living in the castle?!
Arthur did not know where he was going . . . well, subconsciously he did. He had not quite planned going to Guinevère's house but thats where he found himself. He had not seen her for quite some time. She probably knew about the taxes. Even though Arthur had tried to help, he even publicly disobeyed his father's orders but still, it was not nearly enough. He was helpless . . . powerless to help anyone now. He opened the door and without even knocking or checking to see if she was even home, barged right in. "You will not believe what just happened!"

Guinevère jumped at his entrance and the looked over in shock at him. She was suddenly very glad she was dressed and clean and not doing something like cleaning or bathing. She turned set the flowers on the table before looking back at him with concern. It must be horrid if Arthur came here to tell her. Seeing one another in the castle was one thing but him seeking her out here was all but asking for trouble with his father. If work got back to Uther Arthur spent his days here, or any time here he would began asking questions. The last time Uther had questioned her and not been pleasant.
"I heard the king had called the court to meet. I assumed this was about the tax you had refused to collect." She walked over closer to him and then noticed how he looked. "Has something happened?" She asked with worry in her voice, "You don't look very pleased." What had Uther done now? Guinevère would never speak against the king, even to someone like Merlin or Arthur, but in her thoughts she did not like the man.

He was pacing. He did not know what to do with himself. He was trying to maintain composure as a Prince should . . . WAIT! He was no longer a Prince! He was just . . . he was no one! He was a dishonored son of the king! "You heard about that?" She knew he refused to collect the tax? Was she there when he told his men to give back the people's money? Arthur did not regret his defiance to his father. But how was he supposed to help the people at all now? He couldn't. There was no way! He was no longer a Prince!
"I can't believe he has done this! Not only has he increased the taxes, but I just can't believe he would do such a thing!" Arthur was so irritated that he could not even speak in fluent sentences. Everything was boiling inside of him and he dare not express it in front of Uther. Who knows! His next order may be to execute Arthur! He would not be surprised; apparently, his father felt he dealt enough to a disappointing son. What if Katrina was to get pregnant? What if they were to have another child? So many thoughts were racing through Arthur's head, he did not even know where to begin! He could not even sit down, or stop pacing back and forth, back and forth.

Guinevère was so very much lost on what had upset Arthur so badly. He was talking in circles and Guinevère did not quick know how to get him to make since. She watched him pace and tried to remain calm but he was making her nervous. "Arthur!" She called to him trying to make him hear her over his thoughts. "Please, stand still for a moment." She blocked his path to make him stop and reached up to put one hand on each of his shoulders.
"What has he done to anger you so?" She asked trying to make since of Arthur's reaction. So many horrid things had gone thought her mind that she feared for someone's life. Had he ordered someone to be burned as he had almost done with her, or would someone lose their head at dawn?

Arthur did not plan to stop pacing . . . that is until Guinevère stood right in his path, and gently placed her hands on his shoulders. He tried to calm down, but even Guinevère's reassuring words would not be able to comfort him in this situation . . . which would be one of the only times. He looked at her, trying to take a deep breath and calm down. But it was far too difficult. How could his father do this?! He thought he was being fair . . . his father and his views often clashed but to go to this extreme?!
Arthur just looked at Gwen, knowing that several moments of silence passed before he was able to speak. News of this would spread quickly. She would find out soon enough; he may as well be the one to tell her. "My father has disinherited me." It was a loaded sentence. He could not get much more out than that, as when he said it his voice was not above a normal tone, but it was not entirely calm either.

Guinevère would forever feel guilty that her first feeling (for a whole ten seconds) was hope, before she felt the full weight of the statement. She had been blinded by the hope for what this meant for her and Arthur that it had taken a moment before she realized what this meant for Camelot. Quickly after that, what it meant for Arthur. If he was no longer a prince, they could be together openly.
However, all the hopes that Camelot had put in their prince was now gone. Everyone who was just waiting for better days, would be crushed. Along side that, Arthur had to be beyond hurt over Uther's actions! How could the man be so evil to his own son! Guinevère's face showed her anger, and shock. She had known he was a cold man at times but this . . . this was so much more then cold. "W--whh---I-i-i-- . . . . . No. No that can't be true."

The day that Guinevère lacked the words to comfort another -- whether it worked or not -- was a day worth dreading, and that day was today. Arthur looked at her for a moment, before reacting, his voice this time slightly raised. It was not to yell at her, but he could no longer control his frustration over the situation. "It is. He has stripped me of my title, of everything! I am no longer crowned Prince, I am no longer am next in line to be the heir."
He feared for the kingdom. The people were going to rebel. Their loyalty was going to shift. No one was going to stand for this. How could they pay when they could barley survive?! How could Arthur stand by and let this happen?! "The Lady Katrina will be next in line. The ceremony is taking place later today I believe." He was bitter, but his words were filled more with sadness and devastation rather than the desire for revenge. "I do not even think I am his son anymore." If Uther disinherited him . . . it was disowning him.

Guinevère began to come slowly out of her shock. She took a few steps back and sat down at her table, so she was still facing him. "Uther can call it what he would like but you will always be his son. How could he do this?!" Guinevère didn't understand. Was this even allowed? "I didn't know you could change it so someone else got to be an heir. I thought it had to be the first born son?"
Then again, she didn't know much about the laws of nobles. She only knew the ones that she had to know and obey. The simple ones for the lowerclassmen. Such as being loyal to the king. But if the king was Uther, that law was very hard. "What will you do? Surely there is some way you can stop this? He can not be in his right mind, Arthur. He loves you! FOr all his faults that is not one of them. Everyone knows your his weakness, and his pride." Knowing Uther loved his son was one of the reasons keeping Guinevère from truly hating the man.

"The King can do whatever he likes. Now that Lady Katrina is his wife, he can give her all the titles he so desires." Strip the titles from his own son who he raised, to a woman that he barley knew. Arthur did not understand it. He thought he knew his father better than this! "I can not stop this Guinevère. What is done is done," he said in a sad voice. He could not even sit. He had to stand . . . but at least he stopped pacing.
"There is nothing I can do. He has already made his final decision, announced it, and it will all be confirmed by the end of today." It was so soon . . . too soon. "Apparently, I am not either of those things." He was not trying to evoke sympathy . . . he was just trying to understand where his father was coming from because it did not make a lick of sense. "I fear I have disappointed him one too many times. And refusing to carry out his orders, was perhaps the last of his tolerance . . . for me."

"No!" Guinevère spoke up, trying to keep him hopeful. "I have lost a great deal of faith in the king over the years, Arthur, and I will admit that sometimes it's hard to see much good in him but I know--I KNOW--he loves you. That your his pride, and you bring him joy. I have watched the man lock you in your rooms and fight in your name so you would not get hurt, I have seen him distraught when you were ill, and real joy in his face when you lived. I do not believe this was his own making."
"I will not believe it. I would not dare speak these words to anyone but you, but I think his new wife has a hold on him. It could well be love, or it could be he has been to lonely to long, but I will never believe his honestly feels your not his son anymore. I can't believe it." If she did, she would have lost all hope for Camelot. "There has to be a way. I know it dose not seem that way right now, but there has to be some way. You will find it. Because I have faith in you."

Her words did in fact bring him hope. He had believed he was not the man his father wanted him to be, but Uther's actions went against this belief of Arthur's. He had risked his own life several times, and tried to protect his son's. Arthur did not want to forget those times . . . which was why now, the way he spoke to him, shocked him so much and made him wonder. He knew that Guinevère was bold in speaking such words. But of course, Arthur would never betray her trust like that. He wanted her to speak freely in front of him; it was something that made him love her so much. She had faith in him. That was enough to motivate him to do something, anything about this.
"I just don't know what to do anymore," he admitted. "Whether she has a hold on him or not, she is now Queen of Camelot and I have no authority to speak against her or question her motives." Arthur would do whatever it took to protect Camelot and his father, but right now . . .what could he do? Maybe his father would cool off, and that would give him time to reconsider? No. His father was a stubborn man. He would not change his mind. Arthur recalled trying to convince him to do so but his efforts had been useless.
"I fear for Camelot right now, above all else. He is going to continue to tax people and I am afraid they are going to rebel." Rebel. Leave. Betray the king. "I fear they will no longer be loyal to their king judging from the way things are going, and the new laws being implemented in the kingdom." That was far more important, for his love for Camelot made the well being for the kingdom top priority.

"I wish . . . . I wish I have all the answers for you. I don't know how to help you of of this, or how to give you what you might need." She wished she had however. Wished she could give him everything, make everything perfect for him. If she could his father would never have done this. However, Guinevère was not magical, and knew of no spells. Even if she did, she could take someone's will away and make them to things they did not mean, nor feel.
"Perhaps you should seek out advice from someone. Someone who might know of a way around this. Surely this is not the end for you Arthur. There has to be a way to over rule his order. You are the people's prince wither he thinks you are or not. They know who you are and they love you. They know your fair and just. I don't wish this path for you, and I hope and I will pray you find another way with out it coming to this . . . but if you do have to use the people against the king, they will side with you." They feared Uther, and they loved Arthur. "Merlin might be able to help, I wish he was here. He always has at lest one bright idea."
The king's new bride however, had cause Merlin to had to run for his life. He was somewhere out there, alone. Poor Merlin.

He knew she could not help him. Really, no one could. Yet, he still felt comforted by her words . . . they consoled him, which is why he had come here in the first place and ranted to her. "I doubt anyone can help me with this," he said, practically muttering through with enough clarity so that she would be able to understand him. "I don't want to start a rebellion with the people against my father. I do not wish to turn against him, or lead the people to go against him." Even if he wasn't a prince. Though, when she presented the thought . . . Arther wondered if that many people would actually side with him above his father. The thought seemed so unlikely.
"For now, all I can do is hope that my father changes his mind before he gives all his inheritance to Katrina." . . . That was very unlikely. He knew his father. "If not, then I will have to come to terms with what he has decided, and as he is still king, I can not speak against him." Even if he disagreed with his father so much, he would always respect him and even if it was no longer on paper, Uther would always remain his father. "If Merlin had any sense, he'd be far away from here right now. I believe he was falsely accused of something." He did not even have to think twice about letting Merlin escape. He just hoped wherever the idiot was, he was safe.

"I know Merlin is innocent." Guinevère spoke up, "He is not a thief. I do not understand how he came to be blamed for this." Guinevère was worried for her friend, and hoped that he was safe & sound. She had thought about trying to help him but could not find him in time to do so. "I am glad he managed to get out of the city before your men found him." But as for the more pressing troubles, Guinevère still was unsure of what to say to make Arthur feel.
"What will you do should the worse happen and you can not change him mind. If anything happens to him, then she will control the kingdom. I do not know much about her, but I do not think she will be as kind as your father." And that alone was telling. Uther wasn't the kind sort but even Guinevère knew that he was better then some kings out there. He wanted the best for his people and sometimes was harsh with them when magic was used; but he did not wish them ill and protected them as he could.

"I know he is not." Merlin certainly did a lot of strange things; things that Arthur would never understand, nor did he want to. But he trusted the man. He knew that Merlin would not steal. If he had the slightest thought that he might, he would not leave him in charge of his things while Arthur was absent. He would not have given his servant certain responsibilities. "I too am glad he left before they caught him. I fear, that my father would not have wasted any time and would have executed him right away." Arthur would not be surprised if his father had been that quick to deal with him. He seemed to only think about his wife now. Of course, Arthur would not have let that happened, he didn't. He helped him escape, and would do so again in a heartbeat. "Have you seen him at all?" Arthur suddenly asked, actually curious as to where he had gone.
For Guinevère to call his father kind . . . . that was something indeed. He knew she did not think highly of him. He had after all, been the one to order the death of her father. Arthur knew that if the situation were reversed, he would not be so forgiving either. "I will do whatever is necessary to protect Camelot and its people, no matter what that entails." The Kingdom came first, and if she was a threat to it . . . well, Arthur did not know what he was going to do. He just hoped it never came to that, but with the way things were going . . . they were not heading in a good direction. He was still by no means, happy about this entire situation. But he was still helpless . . . for now. Until he was forced to intervene.

"I am glad to hear you have faith in him. Merlin has that same faith in you. You are good for each other, anyone can see it. You two have changed so much since knowing each other." She had once thought Arthur to be a bully, now she though him one of the most kind and honorable men she had ever known. She wasn't sure if Merlin was the cause, but she believe Merlin had helped her see it. "No, I have not spoken nor seen him. I wish I had. I am so worried for him. He's not exactly the big and strong type." She told Arthur but knew he already knew that, "He is one of my best friends here, and I owe him allot for his kindness." Guinevère looked down for a moment, seeming worried but also the memories of Merlin making her smile. "He has done so much for everyone here, if something happens to him I am not sure how I would cope." -soft worried laugh- "Once I even thought Merlin might some one I--" She stopped speaking as she looked up and seemed to recall who she was speaking to. Telling Arthur about her feelings for Merlin--even if they had changed, would be a mistake right now.
Arthur did not need more to think on. "If your not a prince, how will you do it? I believe the people will obey you but the knights who have to report to the king? It will place them in a awkward place. You must have care when planning, Sire, I have no wish to you hurt because the queen sees you as a threat."

Arthur did not want to admit that he had changed because of Merlin . . . but truthfully, Merlin was one of Arthur's closest friends. Yes, he was a servant, and yes he treated him horribly, but that was all a cover. He would gladly do whatever was necessary to ensure his safety. It seemed that Arthur was crossing a lot of boundaries with servants these days. "I'm sure he's safe, wherever he is. He'll return soon enough. Nothing will happen to him. He may be weak, and he may be terrible with weapons, but somewhere in that big head of his . . . is a brain, and I'm certain he'll use it."
He hated seeing Gwen so worried over a friend. Arthur shared her concern, though was not as vocal about it . . . it only made him worry about the idiot even more. He would still tease him in front of others, just as he did in front of Merlin himself. "I know you two are close. He won't be gone for long. He's still after all, my servant. There's only so long I can get along without someone doing my laundry or cleaning up." He was trying to lighten the mood a bit. He was still not in the best of moods, but now, he was trying to comfort Gwen.
Wait . . . WAIT! How close WERE Merlin and Guinevère?! He recalled believing Merlin had feelings for her but . . . did something actually happen! Arthur maintained his composure, even though there were millions of questions flooding his mind. "Be someone that you, what?" He asked curiously, but ensuring that his voice wasn't too curious. There was too much on his mind now. Merlin was missing in action, he could be dead somewhere , Guinevère was upset -- something he could not bare -- and he had just been stripped of his title and royal inheritance. Today, was not a good day.
"I know. I have no immediate ideas, but rest assured, I will not let any harm befall Camelot. I may no longer be a Prince, but that does not lessen my devotion and obligation to protect this kingdom." He needed a plan. But it would take time to figure out, and right now, he was still trying to come to terms with what he had lost.

Oh. Oh no. "Well, you know what everyone thought when Merlin first became your servant. We were becoming friends and we once thought . . . . or well, I once thought. I do not know how Merlin felt. I don't think he agreed . . . not that he wouldn't, but he didn't." Merlin was NOT going to thank her for this. "Once we kissed I knew it wasn't what I thought. Really, just something a sister would feel for her brother." That and with in a few days Lancelot had entered her life and she had forgotten all about her crush on Merlin. WAIT! HAD SHE JUST SAID KISSED?! NO! "Not that he kissed me! He didn't. No, he was dead. I mean, not dead . . . obviously, not dead--" Not yet, "--but I thought he was. . . . he saved your life!"
She covered her hands with her face and took a deep breath. "PLEASE tell me to stop talking!" She begged, before looking up at him. She wondered if any of what she said made any since! How much trouble had she just made for Merlin? She had RUINED Lancelot's relationship with Arthur! Had she just did the same for Merlin? "Really, Merlin is a brother. It was a bad kiss! Not that he kisses bad but . . . no passion!" SHUT UP, GWEN!

They . . . kissed?! Arthur should not have been surprised to hear it, but he was. He remembered making up an excuse to justify Merlin's willingness to take the fall for Gwen when she was arrested. He had assumed something was going on between them, but at that time, he didn't care. He did not know Gwen, and he barley knew Merlin. But now . . . well, this was a very interesting little piece of information that Merlin kept from him. Very interesting indeed. It was strange, how drastically relationships had changed between everyone . . . but this particular thing was very obscure to hear, for Arthur did not know how to react.
He was not angry. He was not hurt. He just looked at her, when she was done rambling. His expression was similar to that when he looked at Merlin when the idiot did something stupid. Though he did not think Gwen did anything stupid. He was just . . . he did not know how to describe it. He just made a face. Was it an expression of disgust? Yes. Perhaps that was it. After all, Merlin kissed the woman that he now loved . . . how bizarre was that?! "You kissed . . . Merlin?" Those words, and his odd expression was the only reaction he gave. He was not going to blow up with anger, for he already established it was not rage he was feeling at this moment. He would smack Merlin on the head with his shield for not having told him about this sooner, but he could not be angry. Perhaps the thought of what everyone believed their relationship to be early on, had been forgotten. When Arthur began to fall in love with Guinevère, he had not even considered the possibility that Merlin may also share those feelings for her. And having judged from his reaction to discovering the Prince's feelings for her, he did not seem to mind.
Yes, it was a strange thought, and maybe Arthur's calm reaction was a result of him still tryingto process the image of Gwen and Merlin kissing . . . a HORRIBLE image indeed! Enough to make Arthur feel sick.
