Gwen was up before the sun, as she was every day. She washed her face and pulled up her hair and bid her father a good day before she headed out to the castle to work. Unlike most who did not like their jobs, Gwen found pleasure is going to the castle and getting paid to help her best friend out every single day. She had high hopes that one she would be Queen of Camelot. She being Morgana of course. Morgana was the king's ward and while it was very subtle Gwen thought at times Morgana might see Prince Arthur as more then a brother like figure.
Gwen had recently found her own mind drifting to a male face, as the prince's new manservant was someone Gwen found very much like her self. She hoped that with time, she might see where these feelings could lead. If Morgana because the prince's future queen; and something did become of her shy feelings for Merlin, then everything would be perfect!!
Gwen entered Morgana's room, with a arm full of purple wild flowers and walked over to the bed to see how Morgana had slept the night before. "My lady?" She called gently in case Morgana was sleeping still.
TAG: Morgana(---At For Now) Setting: All over the Castle... Time Frame: Season 1 Ep 2.
As fitful as her night's rest had been, the young Lady Morgana was just drifting in that sea of half sleep when she heard the door to her chambers open. She hadnt realised it was morning already, yet Guinevère's arrival spoke to the truth of the mornings state. The gentle call from her friend made Morgana open her eyes, finally emerging from that half state completely and waking. She smiled as she spoke back.
"Good morning Gwen," she said, hiding a yawn behind the back of her hand as she sat up in her bed. The covers fell around her in that extravagant heap they were but Morgana paid them little mind as she pushed then aside and swung her legs over the edge of the bed. For perhaps the hundredth time, she cursed the delicate curtains around the four poster bed as she brushed them aside. The only purpose they ever served was to get tangled around her, which generally resulted in her having a rather clumsy moment and tripping onto her bed.
Gwen had been witness to a few of those incidents, but it seemed this morning they were going to cooperate and moved aside with no fuss. Already a good start to the day then. "How was your night?" she inquired, a smile on her face.
Gwen watched her best friends face, with a soft smile while trying to decide if Morgana had been asleep when she walked in. "Good morning, my night was fine." Her face took on a slightly worried expression as she hoped that Morgana had no nightmare last night. "Did you sleep well?" When the nights got bad, Gwen stayed the night and she was wondering if she should have done so last night.
Gwen pulled out one of the flowers in her hand and passed it to Morgana in hopes it would cheer her up, wither her night was had been bad or good. Morning she always begin with flowers!
Gwen was excited for today and was looking forward to seeing the knights riding into the court yard and even practicing some. Sir Leon and his family had gotten her this job so she always cheered for him. Still, if Morgana's night had been troubled she would spend the day up here with her resting if that helped her. She worried about Morgana's dreams, and the little rest her mistress got.
Morgana smiled as she saw Gwen's expression change, to reassure her. "Well enough. I did a little tossing and turning but nothing too drastic," she replied, touching her friend's arm to add an extra assurance that she was indeen fine. She didnt want Guinevère worrying over her or her dreams too much. Though she was touched everytime Gwen offered to stay in her rooms with her for the night. Having someone else with her made some of the more frightening nightmares easier to bear, and Gwen was her best friend. She couldnt think of anyone better to share her time and dreams with.
"Aww thank you," Morgana said, taking the flower from Gwen happily and tucking it in her hair, beside her ear with a grin. "Nobody will be able to resist me now," she added with a wink.
"Now come and tell me of what you've heard about the tournament contestants," the lady said cheekily, as she moved over to the vanity and took a seat. The servants in Camelot were indispensible when it came to gossip, and though she could not approach them directly for such information, Gwen was always happy to pass on whatever she heard. "Anyone likely to knock Arthur off his high-horse this time?" she added, a teasing note to her voice. While she enjoyed sparring with Arthur, and seeing his ego take a hit or two, she didnt wish him harm. Already she had endless amusement in stupid things he'd done over the year, most of which she'd been privvy to or the direct cause of.
Guinevère smiled brightly when Morgana assured her that she was indeed fine. "No one ever is able to resit you." She teased her friend but it was true none the less. Every time Morgana walked into the room the men would stop and stare. Gwen felt a since of pride at her work in making sure Morgana's gowns were always perfect and helping her look so beautiful but Morgana also had her parents to thank for her looks. Clearing her parents mixed well enough to make such a beautiful daughter, and it was a shame they only had one child.
Gwen followed over behind Morgana and put the flowers on the top of the vanity before her mistress; then picked up the brush. Removing the flower in Morgana's hair and sitting it close enough that she could put it back when done she began brushing her hair. "They have been arriving all night, and most the morning!" She told her excitedly, "So many knights from both the far edges of Camelot and even a few from other kingdoms I hear."
It would not matter, Gwen cheered for the same person every time. Sir Leon. He was a apart of her past, and his family had gotten her this job. She was also not the bully that the prince was. "Surely you don't want someone to best the prince." Gwen teased, "He always escorts you to the winner's dinner." As much as a bully as the prince was, some women were born to be queen and Morgana was one of them. She could see it, and she hoped that one day it would be true! Not just because being the servant to the queen was the highest a servant like her could go but because she wanted the best for Morgana! Always the best!
Morgana couldnt help the giggle when Gwen teased her. She knew that without Gwen, she wouldnt feel half as beautiful as she did most of the time, after all, her best friend always helped her, and was honest when Morgana asked. The almost slackjawed look on Arthur's face at the last celebration had made Morgana silently thank Gwen many times over during the night. Not that Morgana was interested in Arthur, no not at all, but to see his face reflect his mental capacity was nice. And made her grin.
The lady watched in the mirror as Guinevère began to brush her hair, and she idly fiddled with the flower, lifting it to her nose to inhale the fragrance. She lowered it again and grinned as Gwen replied to her question and, once again, teased her. She then laughed. "If they would give me a sword, I would enter the tournament and best him myself," she replied honestly. "And I enjoy being escorted to the dinner," she added. "It's just that Arthur is very..... well, there's a reason he wins the tournaments, and its not because of his conversational skills."
Yes, it would take hell and high water to get Morgana to admit she cared about Arthur, and until then, she would forever be the bane of his existence. Most of the maids paid him far more deferrence that he deserved simply because she spent too much time ratting on him. "So what have you heard about this new manservant of his? Merlin was it?" she inquired, returning to her playing with the flower. Merlin had saved Arthur's life, and thus was awarded the position of his manservant. How that was a reward, Morgana would never know.
"That would certainly shock everyone." She teased, knowing that Morgana had a fighting spirit. She was always fighting agitate the king, and loving him at the same time. While Gwen wished she was more cautious she did not wish to change Morgana in any way. She had been nervous when she had taken the job, as Morgana was bold and beautiful and she was shy and blended into the background more often then she wanted to; but everything had worked out.
The same could not have been said about Gwen and Arthur. On her first meeting with the Prince, she had only been on the job a matter of hours when he started trying to sneak frogs into Morgana's room to frighten her. Gwen had watched as he muddied the clean bed, and then to her horror (as she did not know he had frogs in his pants) his pants had started moving oddly! He was bossy, rude, arrogant and Gwen almost wished Morgana would join the men and best Arthur! However, as a servant Gwen did not speak up ageist the prince, even to Morgana.
However the question of Merlin made her already darken skin blush. "Yes, Merlin." Merlin was a happy sort with a bright smile and a mood that matched Gwen's. "Merlin is from a small town near the border between us and Cenred's kingdom. He is very kind, and helpful, and seems very happy to be here." Though she felt bad about him having to be Arthur's servant! "He brought your sleeping draft the other day, I think he is staying with Gaius."
Morgana grinned cheekily at Gwen's reply. "King Uther would have a heart attack and Arthur would never live it down," she mused, the smile still in place. "He already refuses to admit I've beaten him before," Morgana chuckled, remembering the first time she had beaten Arthur in combat. They'd been young, and she'd only been living with them for a few months, when she'd stolen out of her lessons for the day to follow Arthur to the training grounds.
If he had been older, perhaps he would have shown some surprise and anger at her appearance, but he hadnt and so when she'd appeared, he'd run off at the mouth about girls to his friends. So, she'd picked up a left behind broom, not an overly heavy one she would give though, and smacked him across the back of the head with it. His friends had shut up pretty quickly after that. The prince of course had spluttered like a drowned rat and then proceeded into ranting at her about how it wasn't how a lady acted, to which she'd replied 'Only he would know'. A moment later, when he declared he would prove he was a man, she knew she'd won. That day he started training her.
Of course, it hadnt been that. It had just been showing the other guys how to deal with a woman if faced by one in battle (he'd never admit she'd given him a good run for his money). And it was forever kept quiet from Uther. But, Morgana felt a soft smile touch her lips as she thought of it. Teasing aside, Arthur really was the brother she'd never had and she loved him.
The lady was brought from her thoughts when Gwen answered her question about Merlin. "Oh did he? I didnt see him..." she trailed off, thinking back. No she couldnt remember Merlin delivering to her room. Maybe he'd done so while she was out. "I will have to go and see Gaius. I'm out of my sleeping draught," she added a moment later. Perhaps she'd see Merlin there.
"Yes, well as the crown prince I am sure an certain confidence--" arrogance "--is expected." Gwen was not one of the girls who thought the price was dashing and swooned when he passed her in the hall. Ever since the day when he had all but though that frog at her, and bossed her around and made her feel like a servant she had decided that the prince was a spoiled bully and she could on.y hope that when Morgana married him--IF Morgana married him that her kindness would be the best thing the kingdom would ever get.
Guinevère stopped brushing her hair for a moment as she looked into the mirror at Morgana's face. She knew that Morgana's nightmares often were very frightening and it worried her. It wasn't normal for a girl to have such dreams. She was lucky that Gaius could give her something to make her sleep.
"I'll stop by there and pick it up for you if you'd like. Today you should let the events dristract you. Try to have a little fun." Gwen would love to see Merlin again and Morgana needed to have some fun after a bad dream. Maybe there would be a dashing knight in the city to charm her and give her something better to dream about.
(¯`v´¯) .`·.¸.·´ (If you want to read the thread where Arthur & Gwen meet) ¸.·´¸.·´¨) ¸.·*¨) (¸.·´ (¸.·´ .·´ ¸¸.·¨¯`·.(It's here, and called Destiny & Frogs; Arthur tried to sneak frogs into Morgana's room on Gwen's first day as Morgana's maid.)
"Confidence, yes," Morgana replied affirmatively, nodding once in agreement. "It is the pig headedness and pride that spoil him for all good women everywhere," she added with a grin, meeting Gwen's eyes in the mirror. Morgana often found herself rolling her eyes in the court when nobles and their daughters visited. Even when the ones who weren't visiting were around too. Women seemed to fawn over Arthur, so Morgana had taken it upon herself to remind him every chance she got that he was not God's gift to women, and that she was not above telling said women all about him.
Gwen knew better than most about Morgana's dreams, and she knew that without her servant and friend, Morgana would be far more of a nervous wreck than she was. Gwen always came to her, hugged her and sat with her until the residual fear or anxiety faded and she could get back to sleep. It made Morgana feel a bit bad, taking up so much of her friend's time, but she would admit, selfish as it was, that she didnt know how she'd cope without Guinevère.
"I'd appreciate that, but I can't go to the events alone Gwen. Please, you cannot leave me at the women's mercy!" Morgana begged, half joking, half serious as she reached up and took one of Guinevère's hands. "If they're not fawning over me and trying to curry favour with Uther and Arthur, then they're looking down their nose at me like I'm competition. They're welcome to him! I just wish they'd leave me out of the road to get to him."
[That thread is awesome by the way! Its been making me laugh the whole way through! Haha]
Gwen gave a soft smile and even laughed at Morgana's mock beg, while Gwen knew it was true that the social world was like that it was good to know Morgana could poke fun at her self as well as the others with out bitterness. "I would never abandon you when you needed me most!" She teased back. Whenever Gwen teased and played along it was always walking a fine line for her; for she could not be disrespectful in her words. Even if her was of the station that would allow her to say what she wanted when she wanted too, she did not like being hurtful when there was no need. "I will be by your side the whole day, and make sure to get your draft before time for bed."
Gwen's cheek blushed a little at the idea of seeing Merlin again but she did not say anything. Merlin could well just have been nice to her the other day and not think anything along the lines of how she was seeing him, as someone who could maybe turn into something more then just a friend. A good friend, maybe, or even something more if she grew bold enough to think so.
"You could always cheer for Sir Leon, and leave the prince's ladies to cheer for him." His ever growing group of ladies and lower class girls as well, who only saw the title and not the bully behind it. "I always do." Sir Leon and his family held a special place in Gwen's heart, for they were a strong part of her past. Besides, Leon wasn't a bully nor a knave like the prince was.
Morgana sighed dramatically in relief, still joking with her friend. She was forever grateful for Gwen's sense of humor. Lord above forbid if she had gotten one who had been stony and stern. Morgana would have stolen Arthur's frogs and used them on the woman if she had. As it was, Gwen was, literally, a godsend. It had also helped they'd been of a similar age when paired together. They'd both still be growing up, and thus had grown with each other. Despite how other nobles may treat their servants, Morgana would never let Guinevère be hurt by anyone. Behind Arthur, whom she had really no choice with since they were sort of family and family didnt drown one another no matter how badly they wanted to, Gwen was the closest to her.
"Thank you so much Gwen," she replied. "I dont know what I'd do without you."
Being around Arthur also meant one had sharp eyes, all the better to bust him with in her mind, and so Morgana didnt miss the slight blush her maid sported at the mention of the Prince's new manservant, Merlin. Interesting...
Morgana knew a few people had given Gwen second glances, she wasnt hideous and in fact was quite pretty in Morgana's opinion, but from what she knew, Guinevère hadnt really been interested in anyone. Perhaps this Merlin chap would change all that. The lady felt herself smiling as Gwen continued on. She might just see about getting these two to cross paths then.
"Ooo wouldnt that put the stink up Arthur," Morgana said a little gleefully. She didnt openly cheer for the prince anyway, it was simply expected of her, but to do so for another was already making her grin. Perhaps she would give Leon a token to remind Arthur who was behind him. Personally. "I think you're right Gwen. Leon and the other knights deserve support too."
"You will never have to know, for I will always be here for you, my lady!" Gwen resumed brushing Morgana's hair as they talked and enjoying the peaceful morning. She had came to work for Morgana years ago but it soon turned into something besides just a simple job. Morgana had become Gwen's best friend--almost a sister in her heart. She had never had a sister, only a brother who had been missing for over a year now. Not missing, just . . . . not here. Elyan was the type to never settle in one place, and always keeping an eye out for his next adventure . . . and always bring the trouble home with him.
Most servants might had never spoken to their mistresses about their wayward brothers but since they were so close, Gwen had spoken of Elyan before and how much she and their father missed and worried for him. However, Elyan was not on her mind this morning, but rather the knights that he would have loved to watch battle it out in combat.
"Sir Leon is my favorite choice to cheer for. He's a very honorable man, and even though I am a servant he had never been rude to me." Unlike some nobles who thought they were the best thing under the sun and would treat servants like they were pets rather then people. "Maybe Merlin will be out by the ring side helping the prince." Gwen thought hopefully.
Guinevère really was a gift and Morgana often gave her thanks for having such a friend. She didnt care if the other nobles mistreated their servants or thought they were lowly and beneath them. Gwen was her friend and that was all that mattered to Morgana. If it was within her power, Morgana would do anything for Gwen. The lady was quiet for a few minutes, just contently sitting while Gwen continued brushing her hair. This was an almost daily ritual for them and it helped her feel at peace after one of her nightmares.
She smiled as Gwen spoke about Sir Leon. They crossed paths every now and then, and he was kind, she had noticed, to everyone. For a knight, he had the temperament of a normal man and from what she had seen, tried to never mistreat anyone. So it wasnt hard to imagine Guinevère and Leon growing up around one another. "I am glad you and Leon can still see one another," Morgana replied, picking softly at the flower in her hand.
"Hmm I should like to meet him," Morgana mused, a sly smile playing upon her lips. Well this was as good an opportunity as any to help Guinevère and Merlin cross paths. She'd have to keep a watchful eye on them, as she teased Arthur of course. If Gwen was interested in Merlin, Morgana couldn't be happier for her friend.... provided he was a good man. He had saved Arthur's life, but she would not tolerate anybody mistreating Gwen.
