She was thirteen for only another week, and had been working in Camelot's grand castle for a year now. Never once had she seen the king nor prince up close. From afar yes, but her job working in the laundry folding the clothing was not one that allowed her to visit the upper halls.
Now she was being shown to the throne room to speak to the king himself! This morning her father had woken her early tot ell her that a messenger had come and demanded she report before the king at this precise time. Her hands felt hot, and her belly did jumps and spins.
The doors to the throne room opened and she walked in with small steps unsure as to what to say. When she got half way down the hall she dropped into a deep bow and almost lost her balance. Standing up tall again she looked at the floor and spoke, "I am G-Guinevère, my lord, you a-asked to speak with me-e?"

Uther had been expecting her, though he did not intend to linger too long with this meeting. His mind was truly on other matters right now. Gorlois was dead and his emotions were in turmoil. No one would ever know that Uther had manipulated and tweaked, setting up conditions to cause his friend's death. He took no pleasure in it, it hurt him greatly. But, his knowledge that Gorlois was on the verge of finding out the truth was frightening to Uther, was something that could not happen. Uther rationalized that he had not taken Gorlois's life himself, but he knew that did not matter to some. The whispers were circulating, but no one had proof or dared speak against him.
Morgana was here now with him, and Uther's feelings about it were mixed. He could be the father he longed to be to her, could see her grow into a fine Lady. But she would do so believing that Gorlois was her father, because Uther could never tell her the truth. She was like him in so many ways, and deep inside, he feared what she could accomplish if she ever chose to rise against him.
For now, he had to help her settle in, comfort her as she mourned Gorlois, and take care of the matter of getting her a maid. There were plenty of female servants around;washerwomen, dancers, seamstresses, cooks. But Morgana needed a maid closer to her own age. And Uther always needed to know that those interacting most closely with the royal family could be trusted. He'd considered a number of girls, and this one seemed a likely candidate. She was not of noble blood, but her father's name was not unknown given that he was the kingdom's blacksmith and therefore, maker of the swords, daggers, armor, shields and other objects used by the knights and Uther and Arthur themselves. Uther did recall speaking with him several times and being fitted for armor by him.
"Yes. As is known around the kingdom now, the Lady Morgana has come to live in the castle with the Prince and I. Naturally, she will be needing a maidservant to attend to her. You are spoken well of, and I wish to see if you are a fit for the job."

Her eyes flew wide and for a moment her jaw dropped! It took mere seconds to correct her lips to be shut properly but she could not quite bring her eyes to not be so surprised! A maidservant! The KING knew her name and wanted to speak with her about a job! Her heart was betting faster, and her knees shook under her dress. Guinevère really hoped the king could not tell!
"My m-mother was a maid in the Griffith's household, my lord. I know ho-how to preform the job." She told him, trying to sound confidant when in truth she was so nervous! She was talking the a king about a job! "I have learned to style hair, but only in the country manners. I am a faster learner however, and will do my best!"
She knew there would be more too it. That he would ask questions of her family and want to make sure she would not up and leave. In her mind she tried to think of everything about her parent's past so she could answer easily. Or would he asked about something else? Tell her about the new lady that needed her?

It was always procedure to thoroughly question palace workers, to get a feel for how they might be as people, to avoid any with bad backgrounds, and minimize danger to the royal family. Uther asked her a bit about her background, beyond what was obvious, and her family-the class situation was obvious, but sometimes associations with or even relation to unsavory types could be a sign of trouble. It did not hold true for everyone, obviously, but it was better to proceed cautiously and take as few chances as possible.
He didn't think he had to mention the kingdom's magic ban, anyone who lived there for any legnth of time knew of it, and anyone practicing wouldn't last long before they were reported. He did take note mentally of her personality and mannerisms, expecting less refinement than the nobility generally had, but still knowing how annoying an incompatible servant could be sometimes. If they kept quiet and did their duties, fine, but too often it led to unnecessary difficulties, especially if someone snapped after a while. It was best if Morgana could at least get along with her. He also was usually able to pick up on cues as to whether someone would be competent or not-nothing worse than an incompetent, dim-witted servant who couldn't do the job right. She did have the recommendations in her favor, at least.
