Freya felt secure with his arm around her. She idly traced patterns on his chest as he spoke, feeling the rumbling of his laugh beneath her ear. She tilted her head so that she could look up at him, and smiled. She laughed. “I know it might be a little early, but I thought it might be good to have one in mind.” It might not have even worked. Although she wished to have a child as soon as possible, she wouldn’t be averse to doing this again.
And she had a feeling that he wouldn’t be either.
“I’ve no clue. And we’ll have to come up with one for each gender.”
She wasn’t sure which she would prefer, only that she birthed a living child.
And what would they do when that happened? She had some training in the medical arts but that wouldn’t help much if the pain was blinding her from thinking.

He toyed with a lock of her hair mindlessly as she spoke of choosing a name so they had one all ready for if she was to become with child. Merlin hadn't a clue about parenting or even any decent names that could befall their child, so he knew he wouldn't be of much use when it came down to making the choice.
"It doesn't help that I know practically nothing about names for babies. I...wasn't expecting to ever have a child..." he admitted. Well not when he was back and working for Arthur - all of his time had been devoted to the Prince, getting him out of trouble, steering him onto his right path of destiny and being yelled at. Merlin had thought that he would have been in Arthur's service for the rest of his life - but when he met Freya...that changed, he wanted his life to be with her, and her only.
Merlin chuckled as she admitted she had no clue of any. "Well then...Merlin junior it is then" he grinned down at her.

Freya laughed, closing her eyes. A name...a name..... She peeped on eye open as he mentioned having no idea what to name their child. "We'll think of something," she replied, closing her eyes again. She personally hadn't thought of any before. She giggled as he mentioned his preferred name.
"Goodness, we better think of something, then!" she teased, opening her eyes to look up at him. Her mind flew as she tried to think of a name. What if she thought of someone she knew? No, that might bring up memories that she wished to never let surface again. She tried not to think about her former band of druids, the ones that had cast her out of their tribe.
Wait! She had overheard a mother talking to her daughter in one of the many towns that she had sought refuge in during the course of her enchantment. The girl's name had been Ailith.
" Ailith" she said, liking the way it sounded. "For a girl, I mean." For a boy? She liked quite a few. "Boys.... I like Owen, or John." She shrugged before smiling. "But we have to agree."

Merlin mocked a look of offence and grinned at Freya's little joke. Ailith? Ailith. The name rolled in his mind until he spoke it out loud. "Ailith." he rolled it on his tongue and nodded in approval, "I quite like that." he smiled. Merlin scrunched up his nose at both of the boys names. "I stiiiiill prefer Merlin junior?" a small grin formed on his lips.
Merlin thought for a while. Boys...boys names. Actually - there was one that he quite liked. "I can only think of one, I doubt you'll like it so if not then Merlin junior will have to be it - but it's Haelan." he told her. "But...well, im sure we'll think of something."
He rolled onto his side and propped himself up on his elbow again watching her and playing with the same lock of hair. "There's not even a baby yet and already im finding this hard. I'm going to be the worst father ever."

Freya liked the way that the name sounded when he spoke it. She could easily imagine a little dark haired girl trailing after him, responding to the name. Her chest constricted with a mix of excitement and content. She knew that it would be a challenge to raise a child, especially a magical one, but she was finding it more and more exciting to think of it. And then he was telling her his idea for a boy's name.
"I like it," she insisted, her image switching to a dark haired boy. A little boy to look up to him, to wish to mold himself to his father's image. Her boys. Oh, she could see it! She shifted onto her stomach once he moved to his side, resting her chin on her folded arms. She rolled her eyes playfully, brushing aside his worry over his parenting.
"We'll learn together," she insisted, taking the hand that was playing with her hair and kissing it. She held it to her cheek, glad to feel his touch. "And he or she will love you, either way."

A grin spread over his lips when she said that she liked the name. He was sure it would go nicely with any little boy of theirs - should they come to have one. Merlin didn't mind whatever they had. A girl he could dote on and a boy he could teach the tricks of the trade too. One thing for sure, was that he'd protect them both with his life.
They would learn. Both of them. He would learn, just as he had done with his magic and how to become stronger and more controlled. A baby wasn't like reading from a magic book though, nor was it like practicing a spell over and over until you got it right. It was a baby - a small life of whom was totally dependant on it's parents. A baby that could not control their abilties and was vulnerable. A baby who would eventually start to learn as it grew older from both him and Freya.
They would all learn together. As a family.
He leant over and kissed her forehead as she kissed his hand. A family. Together. The start of something new.

Five months later
Freya adjusted the two plates for what seemed to be the hundredth time that evening. She forced her shaking hands down at her sides, unable to contain her excitement. It had been at least two months now that her courses had not come. Two months in which something had been taking root inside her womb. A baby. Their baby. She had all the classic signs that she had remembered from her time among the druids. There had been an elderly midwife that had served as their chief healer, and Freya had helped her on more than one occasion with simple remedies. Her times with the woman had allowed her to witness nervous looking young women seeking out the midwife’s expertise over possible pregnancies.
She had been terribly sick to her stomach, mostly in the mornings. She hadn’t been able to stand the smell of certain foods, and her breasts had grown tender. And what was most obvious of all was that she hadn’t had her cycle.
It had to be a baby. Now all that was left to do was tell Merlin.
She tried to sit and wait patiently for him to arrive, yet her tapping foot betrayed her

He was tired, it had been a long day and all Merlin wanted to do was to get home to Freya and just fall into bed and sleep! The light from his home brought a smile to his face as he knew that she would be there waiting for him, just like she usually was.
Merlin opened the door, and walked in, closing it behind him and taking off his jacket. "Im home! You have nooooo idea how exhausting today was, I mean - I know farming is hard but..." he stopped on seeing Freya's face, "Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked curiously. First of all, what had he done? and secondly, how had he done it when he was hardly at home?
"Ok" he sighed, "What have I done?" the question lingered, Merlin waiting for her to either kill him or yell at him or something. Freya had that impatient look about her, as though there was something that she needed to get off her chest.

Freya tried her best to help him with outdoor chores when she had finished those inside of their home. There was food to prepare and what was not eaten by them was taken to market. That had to be set up. Then there was the everyday housework, the cleaning, the mending. If that was finished in time she went out to help him. But the babe growing within her was slowly sapping any extra energy that she had.
She watched him enter, trying her best not to jump onto him once he walked in the door. Instead she stayed in her chair, trying to remain quiet. But it seemed that her barely contained excitement had been read by him as anger. Her eyes widened as he asked what he had done.
"No! It's nothing bad. Nothing that you've done."
Well....
"Actually, something we've both done."
She got up from her chair and crossed the room to him. Taking up Merlin's hands, she smiled. "I'm with child."

"No! It's nothing bad. Nothing that you've done."
Ok that was a relief
"Actually, something we've both done."
Uh oh...
Merlin walked a few slow steps towards her and frowned at her. "Something bad?" he asked still a little uncertain, even if she had said otherwise earlier. Something was up, and he was wondering what on earth she actually meant. She walked to him and took his hands. Ok...this wasn't unusual but given the currently strange circumstances, Merlin wasn't sure what was going to follow.
"I'm with child."
Oh that was good she was only with chi...
WAIT.....
WHAT!
Had he heard that correctly? Did she mean that she was with a child? As in, a child in their house? He blinked and looked around - seeing that their was indeed no other company. No...that couldn't have been right, he must've heard correctly...
"You...You're with child?" he looked at her astonished, "You...right now.." he put his hand on her stomach, "are with child?" he finished off. He saw the expression on her face and he didn't even need confirmation. The look was enough.
"I...I think I need to sit down..." Merlin literally was about to slump right onto his backside had he not have used magic to move the chair to catch his fall. She was carrying a child. Their baby. Yes they had been trying but even he couldn't have prepared himself for this news.
Now it was all beginning to sink in. Their baby. It actually now exsisted...well...sort of...but it really exsisted! He looked up to Freya and grinned, finally getting up and placing a hand on her stomach. "Are...are you sure?" he asked excitedly. He really needed to be sure that this was real. "Are you sure that..." Oh what the hell! Instead he settled for kissing her deeply. It was real and soon it would be true.
Their family was almost complete.

It was almost comical to see him this unsettled. Had she been harsh to him in the past? Freya wondered if that was why he looked so nervous walking into the room. She certainly hoped she had never acted in such a way to him before. But then the news slowly sank in. She was unable to contain a laugh of joy as he plopped into a chair. “Ours,” she said, unable to stop smiling. She knew she must look like a fool but she could hardly care.
She held his hand to her stomach, as if he could feel the life growing in there. She nodded, feeling as if her head was going to fall off with the force of it. “I’ve all the signs. It can’t be anything else,” she explained, having gone over them herself nearly a hundred times. He took her by surprise with his kiss, yet she quickly relaxed into it. This would be something that she would never forget. The look of surprise, the joy she felt when he kissed her. This day would be forever in her memory.
She laughed, feeling lightheaded from her giddiness once they parted. “I’ve been wanting to tell you. I just wished to be certain before I did.”
She would have felt terrible if she had told him, and then been wrong.
There was a treacherous journey ahead, that she knew. Not all babies made it to term, and not all of them survived birth. For that matter, nor did all mothers. Yet she couldn’t help but think positive in this moment.
Freya embraced Merlin, resting her head on his shoulder.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy.”

She was certain that it was in there...well that was a relief! Even as she held his hand to her stomach, he was sure he could sense something. Either that or he was going to pass out at any given moment.
“I don’t think I’ve ever been this happy.”
Merlin held onto her tightly. Not even happy could describe how he was feeling at the moment! It was more than that! "Well now you have a reason to" he grinned, "We both do..." He put his hands on her shoulders and stepped back to look at her.
"This is the beginning for us..." he told her excitedly, "A chance to finally forget the past and live how we have wanted to since we first came here!"

There was so much to do! Even with months away she knew preparations would have to be made for the arrival of their latest family member. He or she would need clothing and a place to sleep. She had seen Druid mothers sleep with their children in their own bed pallets, but she was far too afraid of accidentally crushing the child.
A cot.
Clothing.
What else?
Well, the child was going to be magical, so even more preparations needed to be done. Harmful things had to be kept from his or her reach. An infant wouldn’t be able to reach something that could provide harm, but that was nothing for a baby with magic. And if it had magic anywhere near as powerful as Merlin, than they had to be extremely vigilant.
She wondered, for a brief moment, if he ever thought of marrying her. That truly would make their new life complete, or at least she thought. Ceremonies had been simple among the Druids, where handfasting had been common. But she figured now wasn’t the time to mention it.
She grinned.
“A new page,” she said, feeling the new start.

He knew that he had never loved her as much as he did at the moment. It was as though as this was what his destiny was all about. No expectations from anyone, no need to be relied upon all the time (ok yes, but not in the way that you had to wait upon a Prince). It was his destiny now to keep Freya and his little one from harm. To protect them in a way that did not involve talking to dragons. He was pretty sure that the dragon would not be able to give him parenting advice. He'd have to figure that one out on his own.
They, of course, would need to be prepared - conceiving the baby was preparation in itself but now it would involve more. Far more. They would need to think about things that they hadn't have had to before. Cots, clothing, perhaps some kind of lock on the door so as it wouldn't float out into the garden and in full view of people who passed. The house was out of the way, but people would still notice a levitating baby floating towards them! Ok, he needed to breathe, this would be alright...
He looked to Freya and kissed her head, "A new life, a new chapter" he smiled, taking her hand to sit her down at the table. "Bryne" he looked at the candles that began to light themselves before clasping his hands together, giving Freya a cheeky smile. "Blóstma" at which point he opened his hands and presented her with...a flower. Something that he had done when they first met, except it had 'meant' to be strawberries...yeah right!

They would have to find a midwife, or some healer skilled in birthing. She had only assisted in one birth before, and she had been given little to do. She remembered two things quite well from it: the blood and the mother's screams. Freya knew that when the time came she would be too far submerged in pain to be able to tell Merlin what to do to assist her. She doubted that he had any experience with births, as women and not physicians were normally favored at labors.
Precautions would have to be taken to keep the child from coming to harm. Not just ordinary ones, but those that would keep the child safe from its own skills.
She giggled with glee, letting him lead her over to the table. She squeezed Merlin's hands, watching as he lit the candles in the room. She reluctantly let go but a moment later was presented with a flower, akin to one of their first moments together.
She touched the petals carefully, as if it was her child.
"Just think....it will only be seven months." Two had passed in confusion over her condition, but now the rest would be in anticipation.

"Seven?!" His voice came out in a hurried squeak. He cleared his throat to actually calm himself. SEVEN MONTHS?! Merlin didn't know how long that he had been expecting her to say, but seven? That wasn't long at all in his view - especially when the days were just flying by. That wouldn't be enough time would it? There was too much to do. Or was there? He know the first thing about babies, and could see himself dropping the poor thing on it's head! "I mean...er.. seven...yaaaay!" he threw his hands up in the air as he tried to express some excitement. In all honesty he was now scared to death at the thought - this was far scarier than anything he'd ever faced with Arthur.
Merlin sighed and sat down on a free chair opposite Freya. "Im going to be a terrible father...I can just see it." He felt his forehead connect with the tabletop - letting out a muffle 'ow'.
Seven Months, Seven Months, Seven Months..................
That was the only thing that was running around screaming in his mind. Seven to try and mould and prepare himself to be something that was far more challenging than Arthur.
SEVEN, SEVEN, SEVEN....
Yup...he was going to need some advice on this one...
SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN
Did the dragon know about babies? If he did Merlin could see himself trekking all the way to Camelot just to find out how to hold one properly. Then again the dragon wouldn't be pleased to see him at all as he'd turned his back on him. It was right now that he wished he had a father would could give him a heads up on this sort of thing, but no. This was something that he knew he would have to figure out by himself.

Freya took note of the change in his tone as he repeated what she had just told him. Watching him warily she nodded. "Seven," she repeated, knowing that it left them with little time. Yet Merlin seemed to be far more worried than she was. She set the flower down on the table once he moved to sit across from her. She frowned as he announced that he would be a terrible father. Of course he wouldn't! Why, from what she had seen and heard from him he already love their child, as did she. It would be hard, but she thought that after some practice they would be wonderful parents.
She winced as he smacked his head.
"We'll figure it out," she said encouragingly, leaning over to brush his hair with her hand. "It doesn't seem like a lot of time but I think we'll manage." Freya wished that her mother was still around, or some other woman that she trusted. She had so many questions!
"What if we contacted your mother?"
She hadn't actually met the woman, and wondered if she would look down on Freya, pregnant out of wedlock with her son's child.

"We'll figure it out,"
"Mmmm" came the muffled sound of his voice from where it was currently pressed down on the tabletop. SEVEN MONTHS. He couldn't hate that number anymore than he did now. In fact Merlin didn't even know why he was freaking out so much, possibly the fact that this was REAL LIFE. It wasn't long in his book.
"It doesn't seem like a lot of time but I think we'll manage."
Babies, magic, magical babies....he'd relayed the same thoughts and coversations with himself over and over and over again. Nothing could prepare him for this, no matter how much or little time they had left. He needed to calm down - perhaps breathing would be a good idea. He looked up from his current resting place on the table and to Freya. His mother? It was an idea. He'd already written to say that he'd left Camelot, but left the details of why, vague. She wouldn't have had an answer from Gauis as Merlin didn't even leave a note or anything. He'd thought it best to just slip away unnoticed.
He ran a hand through his hair. "I think it's time that I told her why I left Camelot" his eyes met Freya's, "after all...she needs to know, i've never really kept anything hidden from her...well, perhaps a few things but something this big? She'd never forgive me if I didn't tell her about it". Merlin loved his mother dearly, and hoped that she wouldn't think too badly of him for giving up everything he had worked towards for love. "I'll write to her..."

Freya withdrew her hand once he looked up at her. She hadn't thought of asking his mother before now, as the woman frankly scared her. She had never met her or had the faintest clue of what she was like, besides what Merlin had mentioned in passing. But it was because of this unknown woman, and the fact that she was the cause of Hunith's son's abandoning of his destiny, that frightened her. The woman might hate her! For either running away with her son, or for having his child without being his wife.
But they would need help, so she would have to put aside her fear.
He mentioned writing to his mother and she nodded, knowing that it was for the best. Yet still.... "I'm afraid she'll hate me," she said, announcing her fear for the first time to him. "For making you leave. For him or her..." She rubbed her still flat stomach.
"But she still deserves to know of what is going on in your life."

"I'm afraid she'll hate me,"
Merlin could tell by Freya's expression that the statement she'd just come out with, had been rolling around in her mind for sometime. He shook his head at this. "My mother could never hate you", but still it wasn't enough to convince her. "For making you leave. For him or her..."
"Especially not for him or her" Merlin replied and shuffled closer towards her, "My mother would love you the second she sees you, I've never known her to hate anyone, even people who have done her wrong - she's not like that, besides..." he put his hand on her stomach, "She would never hold something like this against you" he smiled.
"But she still deserves to know of what is going on in your life."
He nodded at this, "Which is why i'll write to her and tell her of everything, about leaving Camelot, about you and how wonderful you really are - and about how happy I am" Merlin's hand went from Freya's stomach to her own hand, he gave it a gentle squeeze of encouragement.
Gosh how he loved her!
