This had been his home... well it still was, but that was besides the point. Ealdor was under attack, the people were under attack, all by some group of raiders led by a man named Kanen. He was stealing their crops during harvest, all the food they had to live on for the year. His mother had come to Camelot to seek aid, but Uther had refused her. It wasn't his kingdom, it could be seen as an act of war. He wasn't going to abandon his village, all of his friends. He'd said his partings to the Prince but Morgana and Guinevère insisted on coming. Thankfully Arthur was different, and when they were almost there, he appeared, intent on helping them.
But things didn't go as Merlin thought they would. He was glad all three of them came, but things didn't look good. They'd antagonized Kanen, and despite the fact that they were willing to fight, and Arthur was going to train them... Merlin was worried. He believed in them, believed in Arthur, but he was worried. They'd never fought in their entire lives, the villagers. Not like this. They would be against fully trained, armed, dangerous men who knew what they were doing.
Also, though, he was worried about what Will and him argued about. If Arthur was really his friend, could he tell him his secret? That he had magic, was a sorcerer? That there was nothing he could do about it even if he wanted to and he was tired of hiding it?
Many worries were plaguing Merlin's thoughts. He'd gone off a short distance from Ealdor to get some time alone. He wasn't worried about being attacked himself, he was confident that if he was attacked, he could handle them well enough with magic, he was sure of that. Instead, he tread quietly through the leaves and twigs. Well, not too quietly, twigs snapping beneath his feet as he walked.
