"Elyan! Elyan wait!" Guinevère--Gwen--called for her brother as they hurried though the market. Elyan and her, along with their father had all just moved to the city a few days ago. Together they lived in a small one room house, not far from his forge. It might not be much, and for now, it might lack the touches their mother had given to their home but Guinevère loved it. Loved having it as their own, rather then staying in a noble's house. It was their own!
They had a table and a stove! She could learn to cook, and they could be a family! Just like the nobles where. How they sat and ate together! While Guinevère never wished to be another but who she was, she liked how they always had dinners full of talking and laughter. She wanted in their home! She wanted to see her Papa and brother laugh and love in their new home. "Wait for me!"
Today, she and Elyan were looking around the market. It was filled with high stalls and many people. Guinevère was eight and very turned around. She wasn't sure which way Elyan was running toward and which way they were running from. "Elyan!" She called around, stopping to stand in the middle of the street. Where had he gone?
One of the things she did not miss about growing up in the country was the fields of flowers. Ever since coming here she had not seen anywhere flowers grew. Now it seems that her brother was no where in sight as well.

"Elyan! Elyan wait!" 11 year old Elyan was running through the market with his little sister Gwen in tow. "Come on, Gwen! Catch up!" His father had told him to go out and take Gwen with him while he worked in the forge. They had just moved to Camelot and while Gwen had taken a shine to it, Elyan certainly hadn't. He missed Cameliard dearly but it was probably more to do with him missing his mother. Her death rocked him to his very core and for Elyan to be taken away from the last place he saw her alive, killed him. Their house in Camelot didn't smell like her the way their old house did, it wasn't filled with flowers the way their old house was. It just wasn't a home the way their old house was. His mother always knew how to make a cold empty house a cosy home. "Wait for me!" He heard the high voice of his sister, but it seemed further away than before. He loved his younger sister dearly, but did she have to be so slow?! Elyan didn't want to slow down for her, he loved feeling the wind on his face as he ran through the market. It made him feel free.
He turned around to make sure she was behind him and sure enough she was nowhere to be found "Great," he grumbled, "Father's going to kill me." He made his way back into the market, "Gwen! Where are you?" He knew or rather he hoped that if he called loud enough she'd eventually turn up. Otherwise his father would wring his neck and Elyan quite liked his neck.

Where did her big brother go? "Elyan?" She called, "Find me! Come back!" Yet there was no sign of her brother. Guinevère knew nothing of cities and towns like this. Even less about who to true among them! She ended up walking toward where she thought he disappeared too. Following the edges of the stalls she kept looking for him. One vender shooed her on toward the middle and that was when she saw IT!
Upon the trip here, she'd seen the castle but not up close. coming here, the castle had stood out for miles and miles like a welcoming beacon, showing them the way. Now she found she could walk right up and touch the outer wall. Stepping into the grass she walked the few feet up to it, and stretched out her hand to touch the wall.
She'd just TOUCHED the castle! That was the moment. That was when she knew what she wanted from life and it wasn't to cook for her father and keep house until she married. No it was something new. Something grander and would have an adventure (A Guinevère sized one) with it.
She was going to work in the castle! Cook in that kitchens!? Oh the joys of working there! She could walk inside the stones, and that would be an adventure to her. TO Guinevère, adventures were not the size of buildings but exciting small things. When a man wearing chainmail started walking her way, her eyes went wide and she ran away--even while she knew she broke no rules. Running, she didn't even see her brother until she ran smack into him.

"Ungh," Elyan definitely felt something small run into him. On closer inspection he realised it was his little sister, Gwen. He felt so relieved but a little sore; he knew he was going to see a small Gwen shaped bruise on his stomach tomorrow. "Where were you?!" He looked into the direction she came and realised it was the castle. It was huge! Much bigger than he expected. It looked so grand and for fail of a better word, clean!
He thought of the royal family sitting in there doing... well royal things, like ordering people around and being arrogant and pompous while people waited on them hand and foot. He knew it was magnificent but he wouldn't want to live in the castle. The way he saw it, it looked almost like a prison. The big stone walls and metal bars for a gate; there were even gaurds surrounding the castle. No wonder nobles and royals were mean sometimes; they must feel so trapped in their 'grand' homes. No, Elyan would rather have nothing and be free, than have everything and be trapped like they were.
Speaking of gaurds, a man in chainmail began to walk towards them and the look on his face meant he wasn't coming to help them find their way home. "What have you done now, Gwen?"

Guinevère had just ran into her elder brother's chest and nearly bounced off and into the ground. She did manage to keep standing, though only just. "What have you done now, Gwen?" Looking back at the knight coming she stepped closer to her brother, and even edged behind him, "I touched it! The castle. Is that bad?" She didn't know! It was just so big and pretty!
Should they run? Were you allowed to run from nobles? "I'm sorry!" She whispered into her brother's back! Yet as the knight got closer he didn't look mad, or even annoyed. And he wasn't even looking at them! As they stood there, he ended up walking right past them as if going on about his way without even a glance at the two lowerclass children.
Stepping out from behind her brother, Guinevère looked up at him with a sheepish smile. It appeared she wasn't in trouble after all! Which was good! Elyan was the one who always got them into trouble. Not her! She was the one who normally got pulled into trouble with him, and even sometimes ran to tell so that their Papa could get them out of trouble! "Oops."

"You touched the castle?!" He looked at the sheepish smile on Gwen's face. "You know you're not supposed to. It doesn't belong to us, it belongs to the King." With that look on her face he couldn't stay angry at her. He knew he fell for it every time though. He had been increasingly nice to Gwen since their mothers death. He knew she didn't remember her the way Elyan did. But wasn't that worse? He didn't know what he'd do if his memories of his mother were taken away from him. He didn't want to think about it. He felt sad that Gwen didn't get a chance to really know her. But he thought that maybe he could give Gwen some really great memories. If anyone could give her an adventure, he could.
He knew Gwen liked flowers just like their motherand so far they hadn't seen any in Camelot. There was bound to be some somewhere though. He'd never admit it but he had loved the flowers his mother used to pick. In a very manly way of course. The house in Camelot just wasn't the same without the dozens of flowers covering the tables. He took Gwen's hand. "Come on," he whispered. "I know what we can do." He spotted a field just beyond a small forest. There had to be flowers there, Camelot couldn't be completely flowerless and he was sure that the great brave Elyan could make it past one small forest. Those scary trees were no match for him! And Gwen...well he could definitaly protect her from the scary monsters they were sure to face in their mighty quest to find the flowers that the King had hidden!

"You touched the castle?!" Yes, but only the outside! She could not help it! It was so pretty! She wanted to work there and go inside! "You know you're not supposed to. It doesn't belong to us, it belongs to the King." One man owned all that?! Why? she knew nobles had more coin then they did, and could have nicer homes but this one was SO big and SO nice! Guinevère would over heard stories that the nobles told from when their mother was a maid, and in the stories there was always a brave knight and someone in trouble. The knight always won, and the evil monster always died.
She was too afriad to have that sort of adventure, but she wanted too. "Come on," Elyan whispered, pulling her from her thoughts. "I know what we can do." Something safe?! "What?" She whispered back as she hurried! behind him, "Remember the rules!" She called, knowing that their father had given them rules that they were to follow while looking around the city!
Elyan liked to break them, and Guinevère often ended up breaking them with him, though she was more afraid of breaking them. She would never do it if she was alone. "Elyan," She asked him while they were going wherever he was taking her, "I like our new home! I hope we get to stay here forever!" Did he like it? She hoped he did. She was going to ask him too! "Do you like it? Do you think we can stay?"

"Remember the rules!" Elyan heard his sister say. He smiled at that. It was so Gwen, he knew she hated breaking rules, but he didn't. "Rules are made to be broken, Gwen. You would do well to remeber that." Whenever his father gave him a rule to follow it was like he was asking him to just go out and break it. Elyan could never resist the temptation. So when his father told him not to leave Camelot under any circumstances, it was no different. And these were'nt any circumstances. They were on an important quest to discover the lost flowers of Camelot.
Elyan wasn't surprised that Gwen loved their new home, but he was slightly startled by her questions. The truth was, he didn't know how to answer her. Yes, he thought it was okay... but did he like it? The short answer was no, he didn't like it. Their old home felt like it had its own soul this one didn't. It was cold and soulless. But he couldn't tell her that, what kind of brother would that make him? "Yes Gwen, and I'm sure we'll stay here for a long time." He could hear the obvious lie in his voice and he wondered if she could tell. He hoped she couldn't, but he knew that his sister was strangely observant. He didn't want to stay in Camelot forever; he wanted to be free. He knew that couldn't happen here, but his father would never allow him to leave. Wasn't that another rule though?
He held Gwen's hand as they reached the forest. It didn't look quite as small as he thought it did when he saw back in the courtyard. And it did seem much eerier than before. He felt a chill run up his spine, like a warning to turn away; he almost did. But he then decided not to, because Elyan the great or Elyan the mighty, he hadn't decided yet, never turned away from a challenge. He was no coward, so he marched on.

Elyan was so much braver then she was, he never seemed to back down from anything. It left Guinevère feeling oddly safe with him. Even when he was breaking rules. "Rules are made to be broken, Gwen. You would do well to remember that." And apparently they were breaking another one today! Which meant Papa would be very mad come supper when he found out. AND Papa always found out. Mostly because Guinevère had never master the art of lying. She was very un subtle, and easy to read.
Where she was easy to read, Elyan was harder. She did her best however, and while she could not always tell when he lied, she could tell when he was avoiding talking about something. "Yes Gwen, and I'm sure we'll stay here for a long time." And he was doing it now, by not telling her if he liked their new home. "And you like it here?" She questioned but with where they were going she was getting distracted from her thoughts.
The woods?! "Elyan, no!" She whispered, knowing that this WAS breaking the rules! "There could be bandits or monsters!" Scary things that didn't like sunshine and flowers! She wanted to go back and look at the big castle again! Or go home and play with her only doll. "Elyan I'm scared! I don't want to go in there!" But she kept going because she didn't want to go back alone, and she didn't want him going alone either.

Elyan ignored Gwen's protests. "There could be bandits or monsters!" "That's the point, Gwen. What kind of quest would it be without bandits and monsters." Honestly! It was like she'd never been on a mighty quest before in her life! Well... neither had Elyan really. But he had plenty of practice in his room and he heard about many quests like this from his mother's stories. They would go through the forest, battle a few bandits, maybe a monster or two. Then they would finally reach the other side and retrieve the precious flowers that the cold-hearted king had so cruelly hidden from them. Gwen shouldn't doubt him for a moment, Elyan knew exactly what he was doing.
"Elyan I'm scared! I don't want to go in there!" How could he reassure her? He was doing it for her, after all. He was getting the flowers to make her happy, he was practically risking his life for her. "There's nothing to be scared of Gwen." He knew he wasn't scared, Elyan the mighty, he'd finally decided, wasn't scared of anything. "I'll protect you like I always do." He knew he meant it. He wasn't going to let her get hurt. He would never let a big ugly monster touch his sister.
He bent down and picked up two sticks...no swords. One was fairly large and the other was slightly smaller. He handed that one to Gwen. "Here, take this. It'll protect you from anything that tries to harm you." He gave it to her just in case she ever needed to battle with him. They were now both knights after all and knights needed swords. He took his first step into the forest and looked back at Gwen to see if she would follow. He needed her to watch his back. He hoped she would, they were now brothers in arms...well siblings in arms.

"That's the point, Gwen. What kind of quest would it be without bandits and monsters." The good sort! The easy and safe one where they didn't get killed, or worse--grounded! "There's nothing to be scared of Gwen." Nothing but bandits and monsters and their father's wrath! "Elyan!" She tried again, hoping that with each plea he would turn around and they could run away! Out of the woods and back home, or to look at the castle again!
"I'll protect you like I always do." That made her feel better, but not by much. "Who will protect you?" She asked, trying keep up but wishing to go back. That was when he gave her the stick, "Here, take this. It'll protect you from anything that tries to harm you." Elyan had such an imagination. Where Guinevère was practical and grounded, Elyan saw adventure behind every tree. Where she saw sticks and stones, he saw swords and catapults. "From anything?" She asked hesitantly, trying to believe him but was still afraid. What if a bandit had a real sword? "You wont leave me alone, right?" He'd be with her every step of the way?
Guinevère knew she would never grow up to fight a monster. She would never be the sort to be a fighter. She would never ride with knights, and have adventures, and see far off places. She was Just Gwen, and just wanted a home and a family.

"From anything?" Elyan heard the hesitancy in her voice, but she had nothing to worry about, right? "I promise." He felt a little guilty because he knew he shouldn't promise something he wasn't completely sure about. But he wanted her to feel safe, and if her sword didn't manage to protect her, he knew he certainly would. "You wont leave me alone, right?" So, she was afraid. In Elyan's opinion it was a completely ridiculous question. She never had to doubt him. He wouldn't leave her if she needed him. "Of course not, Gwen. You won't leave me alone either, right?" He was going to need her to stay by his side, so neither of them would get lost and he'd need her help when they came across all the monsters that they would surely need to battle. She'd have to be by his side.
Honestly, he needed this. He needed to have some reassurance that even though they've moved he can still have a bit of fun. Why not do that with his little sister? She wasn't completely horrible, even though she'd always tell their father whenever they broke rules. This time would be no different he was sure, but he'd gotten used to his father grounding him and giving him rants about how rules were there for a reason. Elyan's reason for rules was breaking them! That way it was much more fun. But he'd have to think about the consequences of his actions later, just like he always did.
He held his hand out for her to take. "Come on Gwen, this'll be really fun I promise." This time he was very sure of his promise. "I need you with me," he said sincerely. If they were going to be knights they had to stick together. "You're the one that's going to protect me." It was common knowledge, to Elyan at least, that knights always battled together, never alone. So, he couldn't really be a knight without her. Although he wasn't about to tell her, he knew it just wouldn't be as fun without her. Whenever she asked him to protect her or help her, it made him feel like he was needed. Honestly, that was probably the biggest reason he would stay in Camelot. But he knew he didn't really want to, not forever. He wasn't yet sure if he'd be able to give up his freedom to take care of his little sister. He decided there wasn't much point in thinking of these things. He never much liked thinking about the future anyway, not since their mother died. They had to stick together. With his hand still out for her to take, he began taking steps deeper into the forest.
