Perhaps Philip meant to intimidate her with his words about high expectations, but Caitrin was not fazed in the slightest. She had charmed many men, from jester’s right up to princes, and while she had little to show from any of her experiences in term of wealth or even an engagement, she had picked up a variety of skills that were easily transferrable, given the right situation. Caitrin inched her head towards Philip, showing that she was just as bold as he was, “As are mine, my lord.” Caitrin could have gone on about what skills she could show him, but she preferred to deflect the words onto Philip as she doubted he had encountered any women quite as bold as her before. “And believe me, I would not disappoint.” She finished firmly, and chewed her bottom lip thoughtfully, before releasing her lips into a smug sort of smile. Caitrin knew how good she was, even if Philip was yet to understand just what she could do to him, given half a chance.
She was snapped from her thoughts as Philip snapped his hand away from hers. She blinked a few times, wondering if she had misread him completely, and if she had in fact offended him. Caitrin just paused, trying to see if she could read Philip’s emotion, but by the time he spoke it was as if nothing had happened. Brushing away her confusion, Caitrin found her confidence returning. If he had been offended then he would not be further pressing the matter would he? Caitrin decided to be a little bolder and stepped up to Philip, and inched her head towards his so that her lips were merely one inch away from being merged with his. She could feel his warm breath against her, and she breathed against his lips slowly, and raised a hand to run from chest to his neck, her fingers brushing lightly along the warm exposed flesh before she finally thought to reply to Philip vocally, “Perhaps something like this would appeal to you, my Lord.” She grinned, quite sure of herself, and certain that Philip would not resist her advances.

Caitrin decided not to press the issue when Cam thanked her again. Really, she felt like she and Griff weren’t doing enough for Cam. They had only asked her to the estate a week ago, and really they should have asked as soon as Lucan rode out, but they hadn’t known how long he would be gone for. Now no one seemed sure when the party would return, so Caitrin had no idea how long Cam would actually be with them for. She didn’t mind of course. The estate felt so much more alive when they had guests, and now she had someone to talk to all day beside the twins. “You’re welcome.” She finally thought to say, politely, and decided to leave it there. Instead she just smiled at her sister-in-law, and how natural she looked with the baby, “You have such a way with him Cam.” She commented lightly, and it was true. Though Arthur never really cried or fussed, he always seemed settled with Cam, and had warmed to her almost instantly.
She was still trying to burp Esmae, as the child was now full and incredibly drowsy so she wanted to settle her again sooner rather than later. Esmae was snuggling into her mother’s shoulder, and making small noises as her mother patted her back. Eventually she did burp and Caitrin shifted so that she was now cradling the baby in her arms, while Esmae started to succumb to a milky sleep. As Cam spoke again, Caitrin found herself beaming proudly at the compliment. “His Uncle has already been calling him Sir Arthur.” Caitrin grinned again, feeling nothing but pride. Her children were so young, but yet she knew they would always have a loving home around them. Though Arthur was the smaller of the twins, Caitrin knew how strong he was, so she was glad that Cam was just confirming that belief.
Caitrin nodded as she sat back down, that Cam would not need the physician just yet. Though to Caitrin her sister-in-law didn’t look much better than she had a few days ago. She just looked tired, and worn out though she hadn’t really been doing much strenuous work the last few days. “Would you like me to make you a sleeping draught for this evening?” Caitrin was a healer as well, though she wasn’t that skilled, and didn’t stretch far beyond the odd draught and potion. It had therefore made more sense to send for a trained physician to tend to her sister in law, “I was thinking perhaps we could take a walk, or a ride when Griff gets back, as he could mind the children. And the fresh air might do you some good.”

Caitrin smiled a little. She knew that Cam would thank her regardless of what she said or did, but really she didn’t have to thank them at all. She was family, and Caitrin was glad that they could help her out in some respects. She knew Cam would be uneasy what with Lucan gone. Caitrin couldn’t imagine being without Griff for so long, especially now they had the twins. Plus, Lucan was a knight, and there was always a heavy price to pay with being a knight of Camelot. Needless to say there was a high turnover rate. That would never happen to her brother-in-law though. He always had a habit of getting himself out of tricky situations. A family trait, Caitrin thought on reflection. “You don’t need to apologise Cam, and you’re family so we help out where we can.” She knew Lucan and Cam would do the same for her if the tables were reversed, as they were quite a strong little family unit really. A month, Jesu, had it really been so long since Lucan had gone? Caitrin had lost all sense of time what with the twins taking up so much of her day. Her days and weeks seemed to fly by, and she could only really concentrate on when she could sleep and what the twins needed and when. “He’ll be back soon, you know Lucan, he could walk through that door anytime, unannounced.” But he hadn’t yet, and Caitrin quickly realised that she would have to work hard to raise Cam’s spirits. She didn’t mind of course, perhaps they could go for a walk or a ride later. That might cheer her up.
Esmae was still feeding, though Caitrin could feel her slowing down, and eventually the baby’s lips left her, and she could feel her shifting as she began to gurgle softly. She used one hand to pull her gown up again, and made sure she was covered before she shifted Esmae so she could pat her back gently to burp her, though Caitrin’s eyes were still on her sister in law. She smiled as she watched how natural she seemed with Arthur. She hoped that she and Lucan would have their own children soon, they could all be playmates then. That would be a sight to behold, all the mini Auberts. She had seen the way that Lucan had simply fallen in love with Esmae, and she was sure he would make as good a father as his brother had. Griff had taken to fatherhood really well, better than they had both expected, but he loved the twins, and he was always trying to help her out with them.
Caitrin was glad at least that Cam was open to the idea of food. She knew she hadn’t been that well, and she was also determined to help her on the road to recovery. After all, she didn’t want Lucan coming back thinking that they had neglected her at all. Caitrin stood up, Esmae still being burped on her shoulder, and walked across to the solar door. There was a servant just outside so she sent him off to prepare some breakfast for them all. Returning to her original seat, Caitrin looked across at Cam with nothing but concern in her expressions, “Are you feeling any better? Or should we send for the physician again?”

Caitrin couldn’t keep her eyes off the babe in her arms, as the boy kept shifting and making the odd little grunting noises every now and again. She was just completely transfixed by the little one. He was hers and Griff’s son. A son. However much Caitrin tried to pretend that her families values didn’t matter to r, they did in some respects. She felt quite proud that she had produced a son on the first try. It wasn’t that her daughter was any less loved of course but every noblewoman knew that their main duty was to give their husband a son to carry on their line. Caitrin knew Griff wasn’t as bothered about the male line as some noble families might have been. They had just wanted a healthy baby, and now they had two. She still felt quite proud though that she had given him a son, though he was a little preoccupied with their daughter at the moment. “What else do you expect her to do?” She asked, after all Esmae was little more than an hour old, she was hardly capable of doing much. “She might want feeding, or just some attention.” Caitrin pointed out, though if Esmae did want feeding then she would have to do something, because it was hardly anything Griff could sort out.
As Griff spoke, asking the little baby whether she preferred Griffina, Caitrin rolled her eyes at him. She’d never even heard of that name before, and was perfectly certain that he had made it up. Well, at least he wasn’t insisting both his son and daughter were name Griff. It was something he really wouldn’t put past him. “It suits her.” Caitrin agreed with a wide smile. Esmae was a pretty name, and she was sure that the little girl would live up to it utterly and completely. Caitrin then smoothed a finger over her sons small foot, which had popped out from under his blankets. “Arthur and Esmae.” She looked up at her husband, a tired smile forming on her lips. “What a pair they’ll make.” Caitrin was sure any child of hers and Griff’s would certainly make an impact on society. That was if they took after their parents in even the slightest respect. She found herself pulling another face at her husband as he spoke. Griff had a habit of bringing his ego into most things, but it was one of the things she loved him for. After all, his ego just about matched her pride. “Well, its not like this happens everyday is it?” She asked Griff with a small grin at her lips.
Caitrin could see Arthur was starting to fall asleep in her arms, so she hugged him tightly to her chest, and began to shift across the bed. Perhaps she should try to put Arthur in the crib, he wasn’t making a fuss to be fed, he just looked tired. Caitrin had no idea what to do, but she supposed if she put him down for a sleep then if he needed anything else she could just fetch him again. The baby’s eyes were drooping and she moved so she could push herself out of the bed slowly. She was still in an incredible amount of pain, and her chemise would need changing before bed. Urgh. She just wanted some sleep. “We’ve already tired this one out.” She informed her husband with a soft smile, and finally stood up; Arthur now completely drowsy in her arms. Though Caitrin expected it to be quite easy to get to her feet, she hadn’t realised how much pain she would still be in, so her movements were slow and taken with care. Though she finally reached the crib they’d had made, and placed her now sleeping son within in. Caitrin didn’t move for a few moments, and looked over the crib, amazed that this baby was only an hour old. “How is Esmae? Is she tired, or is she still just staring at you?” Caitrin shuffled back to the bed, and sat back, watching Griff and their daughter. She didn’t want to intrude on that moment with him, because she knew how worried and unsure he had been about becoming a parent. So she wanted him to enjoy these first few moments, because she knew that he would make a fantastic father.

Caitrin was quite surprised at how hungry Esmae was this morning. She was growing quite a lot though, as was her brother. Caitrin bit her lip, resisting the urge to groan as Esmae was making her quite sore that morning. She could feel the urgency of her daughters feed, and though she knew she was feeling sore now she was sure it would be worse when Arthur was hungry. Then again, he was a lot more gentle than his sister was. Caitrin knew that man frowned upon her for the way she treated her children, because she preferred the more personal approach rather than handing her children over to a nurse. She preferred it that way because it meant that she didn’t miss out on anything that the twins did, and she felt like she had bonded with them so much better because of it. As Camila came into the room, Caitrin shifted the blanket further over Esmae, so she was fully covered in the company of her sister-in-law. She didn’t want to embarrass Cam after all.
She smiled at Cam as she took a seat and took Arthur in her arms. Her son had been starting to fuss a little, though she knew that he wasn’t hungry just yet, it just sounded like he wanted some attention. Caitrin knew that both her children adored Cam, so they were always comfortable with her. She was quite glad in a sense that Cam didn’t lie to her, and admitted that she hadn’t slept incredibly well. She would rather know that there was something wrong with her, rather than her try to hide it all from her. Caitrin wished now that they had invited Camila to stay with them sooner, and she felt guilty that they hadn’t. After all, she had been alone in the estate with no one but the servants. They had visited a few times, but Caitrin felt better now that they could offer comfort in the estate for Camila. “Why, what is wrong?” If it was a practical issue such as noise, or perhaps that the bed or room weren’t to her tastes then that could easily be worked out. However, Caitrin was sure that there was something more troubling ailing her sister-in-laws mind.
Caitrin gave Cam a warm smile and looked down at Esmae before replying to the question, “I had a full nights rest for once.” Caitrin had been expecting her children to wake her up during the night, but Esmae had only woken up at dawn when her father had woken up a well so that he could go and survey the fields with her Uncle. “Esmae woke up when Griff did, so he just left her in our bed before he went out with my Uncle.” It had been a nice thing to wake up to, and she was so glad that she had Griff to help her out with the twins. She looked across at Cam with a smile, “Thank you, by the way.” She quickly put in, as Arthur seemed quite settled in Cam’s arms , “Do you want me to call the kitchens to make us some breakfast?”

Caitrin pulled her cloak around her shoulders as they continued to run. It hadn’t sunk in at all; what they were doing. At the moment all Caitrin could comprehend was actually running, and making sure she didn’t trip over or lose Griff in the forest. After all, she was falling more and more behind. She shouldn’t be doing this, they shouldn’t be here at all. Caitrin bit her lip, she was trying so hard to keep up with her husband, but she knew that she wouldn’t last much longer. Caitrin finally stopped, with her hand up against a tree, just to rest herself, just for a few moments. She was about to shout to Griff, but he had already turned round, and doubled back to meet her. She shook her head, she wasn’t fine at all. There was nothing wrong with the baby though, that was the most important thing of course right now to Caitrin. They had both run away in the middle of the night, left their home, friends and what little family they had in Camelot to protect not only themselves, but mainly to protect the baby she was carrying. After all, Morgana had already stolen one child from them, she wasn’t going to have the satisfaction a second time. “No, I can’t go on much further.” She explained, the hand from the tree moved to cup the bottom of her belly. She sighed out softly, “The baby is fine though.” She managed to get out in-between pants. Their baby was going to be fine, they would get through this, she knew they would.
She was glad that Griff agreed with her that there was no other alternative to just sleeping outside. She had already settled herself down not far from the tree that she had originally stopped by. She really had no energy to move tonight, she just wanted to sleep. Caitrin pulled her cloak around her belly and huddled herself by the tree; as she was sat down with her back to it. There was no way she was going to be comfortable tonight. She hadn’t been comfortable last time she’d been forced to sleep outside, though the company was a lot better this time. All Richard had done was complain and been annoyed at her. “I suppose once you’ve slept on one forest floor, you’ve slept on them all.” She commented lightly, and looked across at her husband with a small smile, though she could only just about make him out through the dark veil of the night.
Caitrin shuffled towards Griff, and moved so she was now lying on her side. She took Griff’s hand in her own and squeezed it softly, her other hand was running across the swell of her belly. Though it was near impossible, she knew she had to keep somewhat calm, and try to not let her emotions run too much, for the baby’s sake. The physician had told her as such when he’d diagnosed her condition, and she was not going to do anything which could harm their baby. Her thoughts started to run back to Camelot, she wondered if many others had fled, or whether they hadn’t been given the chance. “I’m glad we didn’t go to that feast.” She muttered, they hadn’t gone to the Feast of Beltane because she had been feeling a little unwell. The castle had fallen, of that she was sure, and there was no way she would have been able to get out of the castle in her condition. Caitrin didn’t really want to dwell on what had happened in Camelot, but she hoped that Arthur was ok. If Morgana had taken the throne completely then there was no way they would ever be able to return home. She shivered again, and looked up at her husband, “We should get some sleep.”

Caitrin knew that Griff would never forgive her father for what he had done. Not that she ever expected him to, but she knew that he would have been hurt by what had happened last night, more because of the effect that Payton had had on her, rather than him. She had seen it in his eyes, and even afterwards, the amount of times he had told her it wasn’t her fault, and that the blame belonged with her father was just... overwhelming. She hadn’t believed him at first, because she’d never had any reason to. Since childhood she’d thought that her father hated her because of something she’d done, whether it was because she had been disobeying him, or because she hadn’t been a boy, but she’d always felt that blame. She’d gone against her father anyway, but she’d never felt like it was his fault. Griff had been the first person to really drive home to her that her father was in the wrong, not her. It was an empowering thought, and she had a new found confidence from it in some respects. However, it wasn’t enough to make her stay and try another round with her father. She’d had enough and she was going home. Caitrin did however manage a small smile at Yassia’s words, “I shall tell him, no doubt he will use it as an excuse.” Knowing Griff he probably would as well. Caitrin didn’t mind of course, it amused her more than anything.
Well no, her father didn’t have a man like Griff in mind for her. From what Caitrin could remember, the man she had been betrothed to had been an old warlord, whose wife had died. He was a good friend of her fathers, so naturally he sold her his daughter. Caitrin shuddered a little at the thought, she was so glad now that things had happened as they had. She knew she would have such a happy life now with Griff, and that she would always be loved, and she would love him so much in return. “It’s true, we can be happy in our own choice of marriage.” Caitrin knew that Griff would make an excellent husband, because they completed one another. He might have been trying to stalk her when they had first met, but they had come a long way since then and things had quickly progressed since then. “We shall keep in touch, make no mistake of that.” Caitrin promised her friend with a grin, though she doubted much would change for her as a married woman as she and Griff had been living as if they were married for some time now. Most of the time he lived at the estate, and they probably had more intimate knowledge of each other than most married couples, “I doubt much will change from the way me and Griff live at the moment. Your life will change more than mine, I expect.” No doubt Yassia would see a greater change than she would. After all, Yassia had more morals than Caitrin did in those respects. “Well, until I fall with child, of course.” Caitrin knew her life would change an immense amount when she became pregnant, because she was determined to do everything herself, without nurses or maids. No, her children would have a more personal upbringing.
Grinning at Yassia, she nodded as her friend mentioned diluting the wine with water. That probably would be the right way to go. After all, no one could knock back wine quite like her Uncle. He would no doubt be looking forwards to the wedding just because of the wine and food he would receive after the proceedings. “Well, I’m sure the betrothal will have broken a few hearts at court.” Oliver was a good looking man, and a lot of women had been vying for his hand for many years now with no luck. “I’ll be using my Uncle’s guards, they’ve been watching me since I first came to Camelot.” They would all die for her, though she didn’t want them to of course. They were sworn to protect her family, and that was all she needed and wanted.

As Arthur began to play with the toy in his hands, Caitrin stroked a finger over his small strands of hair. She loved the fact that both the twins took after her in terms of hair colour, she still remained quite smug about that where her husband was concerned. Though she knew that Griff was starting to feel a little outnumbered by redheads. After all, there was only him and her Uncle who didn’t sport the red hair. He had been hoping for a miniature version of himself when they had found out she was pregnant. Perhaps she would be able to fulfil his wishes, but not for a while yet. Not until she was used to the children she already had. She smiled at Nora, sure that this had been a fabulous suggestion. Arthur was happy, so she was happy s well.
She was quite impressed that the tea was grown on the estate. Perhaps she would have to convince her Uncle to enact something like that. She did enjoy tea, but they mostly bought it from the markets and traders when they came around. Caitrin took the tea slowly, she really was enjoying it. “It’s impressive that you grow the brew, we mostly just buy our brew in Camelot.” She explained, having never thought to grow the brew herself she’d just settled to pay for the tea from others. She spent enough time with the traders anyway when she was getting her herbs.
Though she hadn’t meant to upset Nora with her question, it had been an inevitable consequence really. After all, there was nothing really that she could drag out of this situation that was positive. Though her father’s suffering would soon be over, but it was easy for Caitrin to see that as a positive, because it wasn’t her family. She put a hand over Nora’s and squeezed it softly, “If you need anyone to talk to, I’m here.”

Naturally it was an incredibly good thing that Griff was as excited as she was at becoming a proper little family. He had been a bit nervous at first, and he still probably was, but he’d just become better at hiding it. There had never been any question as to whether she would be keeping the baby, they’d just both been happy about it. In ways it had been good as well, as it had forced them both to grow up, and mature a little in some respects. Griff had finally sorted out the pub he owned, and the money from that was enough to keep them comfortable for now. They didn’t live extravagantly, most of the money at the moment went on preparing for the children to arrive. The money for her job helped to pay off the mortgage and expenses for the house. They had a nice little arrangement, and it suited them just fine. “He’ll probably be terrified when I actually go into labour.” No doubt she would be comforting him than it being the other way around.
Caitrin had never had any great want of finding out the gender of her children before they were born. In truth, those who did, and named the child before they were born irritated Caitrin somewhat. It was almost like they were expecting the child to be a certain way, and act in a certain manner before they had even taken their first breath. No, Caitrin wanted the surprise and she wanted to get to know the babies when they were in her arms, without imagining every detail of their life before they were even in the world. “It’s more traditional.” Caitrin agreed with a smile.
Nodding, Caitrin was sure she had seen Nora around a few times during her time at university. “I was always at the hospital really.” She pointed out, from day one she had been working absurd shifts, but Griff had always been on hand to pick her up, and bring her lunch in the middle of the night if she needed it. He’d been just as relieved as she had when she had graduated. Nora’s question took her by surprise a little, not because it was rude or intrusive, but because oddly not many people thought to ask anything like that. She nodded her head though, “I spent a lot of time in hospitals as a young girl.” Well, that had been when she had still lived with her father. After a few trips to hospital with injuries such as a broken arm, fractured fingers, and bruising all over her body Social Services had stepped in, and the rest of her life had been spent with her Uncle and cousin. The nurses had always been so nice to her, and she supposed if it hadn’t been for them she might not have got away from her father so easily. “So I knew I wanted to care for others as they had looked after me.” She pulled a small face, “As cliché as that sounds.” Caitrin then looked back to Nora, “What do you want to work as, after your degree?”

It had to be said, Caitrin was already glad that she and Griff had persuaded Camila to spend a few days with them. Caitrin couldn’t imagine how lonely it had been at the estate, seeing as Lucan had gone off on some top secret mission with some of the other knights. Caitrin really did enjoy the company of her sister in law, so it was an arrangement that suited everyone. Plus, Camila was a help with the twins anyway, perhaps that was experience which would help when she and Lucan started their own family. Caitrin had expressed hopes of becoming an aunt when she had introduced the twins to Lucan, but no news had reached them yet, so Caitrin hadn’t raised the topic with Camila. She probably had enough to worry about anyway, what with Lucan having been away for so long, without Caitrin adding to her worries.
It was quite early in the day still, and Caitrin was sat in the solar with Esmae at her breast. The twins were only two months old, so they spent most of their time either feeding or sleeping, with a little time to play in-between. They had been becoming more active in the past week or so though, so that was promising. Esmae was even starting to smile at her. She had a shawl draped around the baby, so she wasn’t exposed in case a servant or someone else walked in. Caitrin knew she wasn’t being terribly conventional. After all, she had decided to feed her children from her own breast rather than hire a wetnurse. Why on earth would she want another woman to do the job that she could manage perfectly well on her own? Then again, she had to admit she was starting to feel a little sore. With having two mouths to feed Caitrin felt like she was becoming some sort of cow. When one baby was full the other was bawling to be fed.
Arthur was in a basket of blankets, all wrapped up and sleeping soundly by the side of her chair. However, she could see he was starting to wake. Hopefully he wouldn’t want a feed straight away. Though she could feed both twins at the same time, it was awkward and took a lot of effort to keep both babies latched on. She put her hand on Esmae’s head, and sighed softly as the child continued to feed. She was so strong, and it made her mother so relieved. Both the children had been born strong and healthy, so there was little to fear if she took great care of them. Her head inclined upwards as the solar door opened, revealing Camila. She hadn’t seen her since last night then again, Caitrin had retired to bed early last night, as the twins had tired her out completely. “Good morning Camila.” She smiled and gestured to a seat next to her, “Did you sleep well?” It was nice as well for Caitrin to have a bit of sociable adult company. Her Uncle and Griff were usually out working or going over papers for most of the day, so she was usually here on her own. However, Griff had promised to be back a little earlier today.

Caitrin felt very, very scared and completely out of control. All her life she had wanted to believe that sorcerers only strove for good, and that their gifts should be use to help rather than to harm. She had the gifts over fire, wind and other minor spells, but she would never implore them for anything but good. Perhaps that meant she wasn’t worthy to wield them, because she would rather stay hidden, and keep the gifts to herself, but it was what she had to do to stay alive, and if that was the cost of staying alive then she would gladly pay it. She had no intention of rising to Nimueh, or siding with her cause. She didn’t believe in it, what hope did magic have of returning to Camelot? It had been twenty years, the children playing in the street and the young knight of Camelot had no memory of a time of magic, and therefore had no fond memories of it, and the good magic could do. What on earth would inspire masses like that to rise up or the cause of magic, when all sorcery had done was to bring misery to the kingdom over the past few months? Caitrin was young, and inexperienced and naive, but she was fully aware of that. She knew that she would never see the side to the story that Nimueh was trying to preach to her. But surely hardening everyone’s hearts against magic was not the way to go.
Nothing Nimueh was saying could ever sway Caitrin’s opinion. She couldn’t understand how Nimueh ever expected her plans to work. If she were to attack Camelot then surely they would loathe, rather than love magic. She knew that she was trying to provoke her, but Caitrin did sometimes feel unworthy to wield her gifts, but what else could she do? All she felt she could do at the moment was to bide her time, a time when magic would become more acceptable within Camelot. If that time never came then her secret would die with her, and she would deal with that. She would survive as she always had. “I would rather live, and keep my gifts a secret.” She replied stubbornly, “Sorcery will never return to Camelot while we continue to be plagued by sorcerers seeking revenge. All it will do is harden the heart of the people, people who would be needed to seek a change in the law.” She was surprised with how confidently her words came to her, but once they had been said there was no taking them back, and she believed them completely.
Caitrin inclined her head towards Nimueh, and then looked around the hovel they were now arguing in. “You might be free, but free to do what exactly?” Perhaps they didn’t have the same wants and needs, but Caitrin preferred a life where she had a roof over her head and her family around her. What did Nimueh have? From what Caitrin could see, despite this freedom, she had very little. “I would rather live as I do now, at court with my friends and family, than be out here in exile.” She said rather curtly, she had had enough of Nimueh’s games, and she bit her lip, she wanted to leave, but short on running off she couldn’t think how to broach that one, so she took a step back, looking behind her, ready to run when the moment called for it.

Caitrin looked down at Arthur and began to tuck his blankets more tightly around his little body. The sunset was now well and truly upon them, and while Caitrin was well used to the cold, as she had spent most of her life in Mercia, the little baby was not used to it at all. He looked like he was uncomfortably, and he let out a small cry, which luckily was not followed by more cries. She rocked him a little, wrapping her arms around him to keep him warm. She would probably put him to bed when she was comfortable in the knowledge that he was warmer than he was now. She wouldn’t be able to get him to settle anyway until he was comfortable anyway.
She smiled at Xenia and nodded, most knew in Camelot already that she had named her son purposely after the new King of Camelot. Most would call it pretentious, but she had always been fond of the name, and she was good friend of hers, so she felt quite good about the name. It suited her son anyway, he was little Arthur Aubert, and Caitrin knew this babe would make them all so proud. “Yes, King Arthur is a close friend of mine.” She explained softly, and continued to rock the baby in her arms. Arthur seemed a bit happier as he warmed up.
Though the offer was sweet, Caitrin shook her head politely, “I would prefer to walk, as I am carrying Arthur.” She explained, but she would rather not get anywhere near the horse as well, having already seen its temperament. “You can ride if you want, or we could both walk and walk the horse alongside us?” She suggested gently.

Caitrin didn’t really want to go into her time with Vortigern, it wasn’t anything against Yassia, but she hadn’t told anyone what he had done to her. It had been the first time in her life where she had felt completely helpless and useless. He had beaten and tormented her the entire way home, to the point where she had finally cracked. Jesu, she had tried to stand up to him, but nothing had worked. He’d always bitten back harder. His emotions were sub human, Caitrin was sure of it. She had been on the floor, in tears cradling the arm he had nearly torn out of its socket and yet he had still been there, shouting at her, and abusing her. He had abused her in the most intimate of ways though, and the fact she couldn’t remember it made it worse. Of course her time had come to her, and Vortigern hadn’t left a lasting impact on her life. She had slowly began to get her confidence back, and the fact no one else had known about the incident had made it easier in a way, because she had only been reminded of it if she had chosen to think about it. It had all soon been forgotten, and now Caitrin had a completely different life, one she was going to spend with Griff. “You would be surprised.” Was all Caitrin could think to say without snapping at her friend. She had no idea what he had done to Yassia, but Yassia had no idea what he had done to Caitrin either. She didn’t really want to dwell on this topic much more, because these times belonged firmly in the past.
She had almost given up hope that Griff would warm to the conditions in Mercia. She knew he was from the south, but Caitrin didn’t know that he was so unseasoned to the cold weather. She had grown up used to the long winters, and most of her childhood had been wrapped up in cloaks and furs. After all, Mercia had been the homeland of the de Archer’s for generations. Her father had once said that the fact they were so used to the cold was in their blood. “He will never be used to the cold, even at home he dislikes it when there is a chill in the air.” More often than not Caitrin was too hot where Griff was too cold. She was sure he only used it as an excuse to get her back into bed with him, to warm him up.
Caitrin chuckled a little, “Jeffrey did a good job with hunting me down.” Her brother had been quite pleased with himself when he had cut off her path, and had pulled down her hood. He had been surprised of course, that his little sister had been causing so much trouble, along with her friend. Though he hadn’t chastised her, he’d just laughed it off and had then ridden beside her. Caitrin knew she was unlikely to get much more out of Yassia on this topic, especially as she seemed so against giving her anything. Then again, if there was anything in what Caitrin suspected, then it would show itself soon enough. “Well, I’m sure he was satisfied with his catch.” She winked at Yassia, “Is he looking forwards to the feast as well?”

Though the pain wasn’t unbearable, Caitrin could notice it getting worse. It was just gradually getting worse, and was confirming her fears that she was in labour. That was a panicking thought, but she’d been told to do anything but panic in this situation. That was really easily said than done, because now all she wanted to do was to panic. After all, she had every reason to. Her child would soon be in the world, but before that happy moment, she would have to go through the worst pain imaginable. She almost wished she had asked more women around the experience, perhaps she would have felt more prepared, yet now she felt like she knew nothing and yet she was here, at the start of her labour. “I don’t despise you.” She smiled at him softly both her hands now resting on her belly, “You’ll have to meet the child that has worried you so much as well.” As for a knight of Camelot, Elyan looked quite worried as well. She supposed that he hadn’t ever been in this situation before.
Caitirn wasn’t looking at where they were going anymore, she had her eyes closed, breathing out slowly, trying to stop the pain. Well, not so much stop it, but she was trying to at least make it bearable until she could get into a more comfortable position. She wouldn’t say anything to Elyan of course, because he was doing the best he could. “Ok.” She whispered, her eyes still closed. She only opened her eyes again when she felt the odd sensation of being lowered back to her feet. She snapped her eyes open, and grabbed hold of Elyan so she could steady herself. Her legs just about held her weight, but the pain felt worse now somehow. “Thank you, for getting me here.” Her waters hadn’t broken yet, so it was fine. Nothing serious had happened yet. Caitrin breathed out slowly, but she hugged Elyan back as he put his arms around her. “Come back and see me when the baby is here, I’ll be fine, really.” She didn’t want to trouble Elyan again. “I’ll go and wake my husband, I think we’re in for a long night.” She gave a soft smile, but the pain was still there, “Have a good night Elyan.” Caitrin then gave him one last smile and then went into the room, to wake Griff up. He wasn’t going to take kindly to her disturbing his sleep.

Though Caitrin now felt like she was getting to know the twins better, it had not always been so. At first it had been so hard to please both children. One loved being held, and cuddled, while the other preferred solitude. One slept in the day, and the other the night. It had been so much harder than she had expected it to be. However, all the tiredness, and the painstaking hours devoted to the twins seemed worth it when one of them smiled at her, or toyed with her hair, and just let her know that they were happy. “It is hard, a lot harder than I expected it to be.” She admitted softly. Perhaps she had been too naive at first, but she had quickly realised the hardship of raising twins. She had probably made it even harder by not hiring a nursemaid or a wetnurse, but she wanted a personal impact on her children’s lives, and not one just dictated to through a nurse.
Caitrin followed Nora outside, allowing her to tend to Arthur. The baby seemed happy enough, so she had no reason to take him back. She was quite glad in a way that Arthur was so happy with Nora’s company. After all, Nora was quickly becoming quite a close friend so she wanted her children to be comfortable around her as well. It certainly made things easier. She watched as Nora set him down on a blanket with his toys. The baby squealed happily and reached for the closest toy. Caitrin grinned down at him, “Well, somebody is certainly happy.” She commented, as Arthur tried to suck on the toy slowly, looking at his mother happily. “He defiantly likes it.” She reassured Nora, smiling at her gently.
The tea and biscuits were there presently, and Caitrin was glad of a drink and something to eat. Sometimes she was that bothered about her children that she forgot to look after herself sometimes. There weren’t enough hours in the day sometimes, and Caitrin took the tea gratefully, smiling with thanks at her friend. “Thank you, this tea is wonderful.” Arthur seemed happy enough, so she didn’t have to tend him for now, “How have you been Nora?” What with everything that was happening she wondered how her friend was faring.

Caitrin wasn’t quite sure now she actually thought about it, that she would want to help her father with his work. After all, it did look quite boring as all he seemed to do was write letters and sign papers and have meetings with different people. However, when he went out to survey the land, now that did look like a lot of fun. You just got to go around looking at what you owned and made sure the ground had been planted properly to get food from it. Caitrin would have loved to help out there, or do anything which would make her father look at her with an inch of pride. Every time her father looked at her, Caitrin knew he didn’t like her. She wasn’t pretty like her sisters, and she didn’t act like a dutiful daughter either, so why would he like her? Isolde seemed to get along well with her father, and Caitrin was quite envious of that in a way.
Isolde’s life did seem very different to her own, and though Caitrin knew not everyone lived in manors, she didn’t think that they would be this different. She quite liked it though in a way, but she supposed she would rather live in a manor than here. No matter how much she envied the relationship Isolde had with her father. “But it seems like fun other than that?” Caitrin asked, slightly cautiously, she had no idea what it was like to work in the way that Isolde’s family did, so she had no idea whether it would be fun or not.
Though Caitrin had obviously been joking about giving her siblings away, sometimes she wished she had less siblings than she actually did. Her father had wanted another son, granted he had four already, but he had once told her that daughters were just expensive. So she had just felt like an expense since her younger days. Caitrin shrugged softly, “My nursemaid plays with me sometimes, or I make up my own games.” She didn’t really have friends her own age. Friends were made in court, and she wasn’t allowed to go to court.

Caitrin felt like she was in a better mood now simply because she was up and about. Being bedridden didn’t really suit Caitrin in the slightest. She had hated the past few days, while she had been recovering. Of course Arthur had come to visit her, to see how she was faring, but even he had known how much she hated being cooped up. She would much rather be out with her mare, or even taking a stroll than being confined to her guest chambers. However, that was the price of her stupidity. She had run straight into the thick of the fighting and this was her punishment. However, her burns were healing, and her ankle was the only thing ailing her now. More and more Caitrin was starting to wonder about sorcery, and creatures of magic. Caitrin herself was a sorceress, and she had always assumed that other sorcerers would be like her, and only want to use their gifts for good. However, it felt like the longer she spent in Camelot the more that view was being changed. In Mercia sorcery had not been frowned upon, but that wasn’t to be thought of now, Caitrin was never going back to Mercia. Camelot was her home now, even if she had to forever hide this part of her.
She was still standing outside the door, and eventually she thought to open it, “Gaius?” She called out gently again, and then realised he mustn’t be in. Pressing her lips together, she stepped into the workshop, still trying to decide what to do. She wondered if Gaius would be annoyed to find her trespassing in his space, but she really was just looking for him and some pain relief of course. Gaius always seemed to be in good spirits anyway, so she was sure there would be no harm in waiting here for him. She was silly to think that he would be in here really, after all, she supposed he must have plenty of people to tend to after the dragon attack. Really, she had got off lightly compared to many of the others who had suffered during the attack.
She was occupying herself, looking at the books and potions on the shelves when she heard someone come into the room as well. She was expecting to see Gaius when she turned to face the voice, but instead there was a man standing in the door way. Caitrin had seen him before, but couldn’t quite recall where exactly. After all, the castle did hold quite a lot of servants. “Oh, hello. I was just waiting to see Gaius.” She smiled softly at him, “Are you waiting for him as well?”

Caitrin hoped that her face would not scar All in all it wasn’t a deep cut, but she had known less serious wounds to scar. She had no interest in sporting her father’s anger on her face for all to see. When she got home to Camelot she certainly wouldn’t be making an appearance at court until she was fully healed. Arthur would not believe her if she lied about how she came to get her injuries, and she knew he would be annoyed, and she had no wish to fan the flames of distaste between Camelot and Mercia. She would retire to her estate, her Uncle would not be surprised at her state, he had warned her of her father again before she had left Camelot. He knew how dangerous his brother could be, but Caitrin had gone anyway and she had promptly ignored her Uncle. She was incredibly regretting coming here in many ways. Of course she had enjoyed her time with Yassia and Oliver, but somehow it all seemed to be pushed to the back of her mind when she thought of her father. “Griff needs no invitation.” She gave a soft smirk, even as early as her father leaving the room, Griff’s mind had been on other things. She had liked that in a way though, because even though things had looked terrible, he had still been more concerned with cheering her up than worrying about his own wellbeing.
In a way Caitrin wished that her father had changed in a way. Perhaps it was a naive hope that he would ever be proud or approve of what she had done. She smiled sadly at the floor, and bit her lip. Throughout her childhood, her father had never been interested in anything she had done, excepting to reprimand her. Most of the time, Caitrin had been forbidden to go to court because of her bruises, in case something was said about it. Caitrin bit her lip and ran a hand through her hair. Though she supposed Yassia was right, because had her father not sent her to Camelot then she wouldn’t have had anything that she did now. “If he had his own way, I would have been married off as a young woman.” She had been engaged once, and had only been spared the marriage because the man she was supposed to marry had died in battle before she had been walked up the aisle. She preferred the marriage she had now, after all, she loved Griff, and she would try to be a good wife for him. “But you are right, and I can’t wait to be married after all.”
Well, at least next time they journeyed to Mercia they would be better prepared. They would certainly be bringing a personal guard, that was for sure. Her Uncle would be with them as well, which did make Caitrin feel a little better. He wouldn’t be much help though after a bottle or several of wine. “You’ll defiantly need to restock all the wine.” She smirked, knowing between Griff and her Uncle would be taking advantage of having the alcohol on demand. The fact Yassia was already considering having her father banned from the proceedings should have settled Caitrin’s nerves, and it did to an extent but she was still grateful. “And I will be travelling with a guard.” She mused, bit ashamed so much had to be put in place because of one man, “But thank you, I really cannot wait for the wedding. When are you thinking of tying the knot?” She asked with a wide smile, sure that Oliver and Yassia would not wait long before speaking the vow.

Though the princess was assuring her that the horse was fine, and wouldn’t harm her, Caitrin was still nervous. The horse after all had to be quite stubborn and it could be dangerous. Caitrin was still holding Arthur close to her chest, and kept one eye on the horse. It wasn’t that she didn’t trust the woman, but she knew enough about horses to know that anything could provoke their tempers and moods if the beast was indeed a stubborn one. “If you say so, my Lady.” Caitrin said rather quietly, and took a small step towards the horse so it wouldn’t look like she was untrusting of what Xenia was saying to her. Arthur started to gurgle in her arms, and she could see he was getting tired. He would probably be ready for a sleep eventually.
Caitrin as glad of least Xenia was in agreement at freshening up and then continuing to Camelot. It would probably be better suited to take the princess to Camelot. After all, the manor wasn’t really suitable for royalty. It suited hers and her family’s needs, and that was it. Caitrin smiled at Xenia, and looked through the trees, “Do you want to follow me back to the estate princess? It is only a short walk back to my home.” Caitrin didn’t mind walking if Xenia wanted to ride to the manor. The horse would be tended to by her servants of course, but Caitrin had already decided, after seeing the horses temperament she didn’t want it by her other horses. It might be a calm beast, but Caitrin wanted to be sure. “You can ride alongside me if you want? I don’t mind walking.”

Many times during the day, Caitrin would catch herself wondering at how she could have two little lives growing within her. Of course she was excited, but she was also bewildered and worried and scared most of all. What if she wasn’t ready to be a mother? What if she couldn’t offer these children the life they deserved? Well, such thoughts only bothered her in her darkest worries, and for the most time she was just excited and couldn’t wait to meet her children. Caitrin nodded at Nora’s comment, “I know, my husband is almost as excited as I am. Though it did take him a while to get used to the idea.” She gave a warm knowing smile, Griff had thought she was joking at first when she had told him that she was pregnant, and he’d quickly realised how wrong he had been.
Now Caitrin was quite traditional in many ways. She’d insisted that none of the midwives or scans could tell her what she was expecting. No doubt Griff wanted to know, he just wanted a son, but he hadn’t pressed on knowing the gender. He didn’t really mind about knowing, but Caitrin knew he basically wanted a miniature version of himself. “We’re keeping it a surprise. Especially seeing as there are two babies.” She smiled fondly and rubbed her belly softly, “I kind of think it would ruin the surprise a little to know what we were having so early, I’d rather wait.” This wasn’t the norm though, most did find out the sex of the baby, and even if they didn’t publically announce it, they still knew.
Ah so she had seen Nora at the university. She thought she had recognised her from the open days. She must have only been a year or two older than Nora, though it seemed quite strange to think that she was already married and with a family on the way. Not many of Caitrin’s friends were settled, and she was the only one who was married. “The buildings are all mazes anyway.” She gave a soft laugh, “Though I spent most of my time in the hospital, doing hands on work.”
