She smiled when he said they could just go back to this chambers and not go to his mother's room. She knew that he had to help him along, so she took a few steps backwards in effort to show him she wasn't going. "If you want to go wait there for me, I will join you shortly. I want to look to see if anything was left behind."
She waited for him as she took a few more steps backwards. She knew he would either try to stop her or drag his feet as he followed her. This Arthur would not like her in the room she knew, he'd not had the push he had before to let her in here. Still, she wasn't going to back down and let him walk away from it. After a few long seconds she turned and started walking toward the room, silently hoping he joined her. If only for her safely.

This Arthur did not like her going into the room at all! She did not even seem to acknowledge his dismissive remark, saying that he did not want them to go in there. Had she missed the implication in his words which implied that it was not a room he wished to go in with her? Perhaps he should be less subtle then, and tell her flat out. He took a few hurried steps and stood in front of her, as if to block her from continuing towards his mothers room. There were some things he would tolerate; her yelling, her slapping him, her criticisms. But he would not tolerate her entering such a private location . . . one that contained everything of his mother's. "I would prefer we not go there right now." Prefer was putting it kindly. He preferred; insisted; but really, underneath those sugar coated words, it was a demand.
"So we can either return to my chambers, unless you have another suggestion of where we can go to talk." He was not going to back right now. He needed her help, but he was not going to allow her to go somewhere that held far too many emotions for him. Little did he know, that he was the one who had introduced the room to her, and first invited her to it. This was something that had not even crossed his mind for an instant. He doubted he would ever take anyone there . . . not even the woman he was in love with.

Guinevère did not stopped walking and gave a pause before walking around him, and speaking again. "I will meet you there. You do not have to join me." But she knew that she was pushing him, and she knew that he would either join her in the end or drag her out the way they came and make sure go where he wanted her to go. she was rather hoping the need to find out what was going on would let him follow her.
She also knew that she wasn't going to enter the room this time. She'd stand at the door and let him go in and look. Maybe she would look around the hall and see what could be found. With any luck, Arthur would have managed to put up a fight, and there would be some sort of sign she missed upon finding him in the floor. Maybe something that would give them a clue as to who or even as to why.

Her complete disregard for what he said, agitated him. He did not like people just dismissing his words, walking past him as if what he said and did had not significance. She was indeed pushing him and he did not like playing this sort of gave. He did not like arguing about anything that was related to his mother, even if it just the room that all he possessions was stored in. It held a special place in his heart, and for whatever reason, Guinevère felt that it was alright to just ignore his words that they were not going there and head there anyway. As if she had the right. Arthur however knew that the only thing worse than allowing someone else to go in, was allowing someone else to go in unsupervised. Even if she had helped him; even if she deserved more than hurtful words . . . this was not a subject that she should be testing him on. And his irritation got the better of him.
"I know that you say we're friends, but have you no respect," he said in a voice, a bit colder than he had intended. But this was his mother's room! It was not the throne room, or the dining hall, or even his own chambers which still would be better! It was his mother's room! The previous Queen of Camelot! -- Minus that unfortunate troll incident -- She should not be just going in there as if she was somehow entitled to. And Arthur would let her know just how opposed he was to this idea.

Guinevère paused and moved to look at him, her lips parted in surprise but not anger. She had known she was pushing but but it appeared he was not going to let it just pass as she assumed. She watched his face looking for the signs to give her a clue of what he was thinking. "Respect?" She asked as she looked up at him.
"Perhaps you are right. Maybe I am not respecting your wishes. But you are the one refusing to seek out the answers that could be just halls away. What if you'd put up a struggle before you got hit with a spell? What if there is some sort of sign as to who or why they were here?"
She did not speak in anger but in a calm tone, that said understood where he came from. "I don't know why her things are locked away and hidden from the world but I do want to know why they were there. Why they were looking for you down there. I want to know if there is a way to help you! To bring back the memories before you loose more then just that! If you do not want me in there come with me! You go in and see what you can find and I will look around the hall out side it for any signs that will give us aid."

Arthur had the same questions. He wanted to know why he had been down there -- with her -- and how they had found him in such a private location that virtually no one else knew about. He wanted answers as well, but he wanted to determine the ways in which he got him. In this particular situation anyway. He may not have control over a lot -- which was ironic since he was the king -- but he stood firm by his disapproval to let her, or anyone else enter. Hell, he wouldn't even let Merlin enter the room if he tried. "They are all valid questions," he said, his tone not quite softening but it was not as evidently annoyed either. "And they are ones I can investigate at a later time. As I said, I will go down there on my own, later." Meaning, without her. He took a few more steps towards her in case she decided to continue to move forward.
"What I need to know from you right now, is why you were in the room. What you remembered right before I was rendered unconscious. Any detail that you can recall." The whys and hows of her being down there was questions he could not ignore. He knew that he had asked the same ones when he first awoke but now that he was slightly less frazzled, perhaps she could give more detail on the matter. Rather than something vague along the lines or such as 'he invited her there' which he strongly doubted. There were still too many holes in everything; and he was planning to find out as much as he could from as many people as he could. Since Guinevère seemed to hold a vast knowledge about everyone, she was the perfect person to question. And he only hoped that eventually, her insistence to go with him to his mother's room would decline.

Was he interrogating her?! Guinevère looked up at him, trying to tell if he was doing it because he wanted answers or if because he was trying to get her up as if he did not trust her. She was going to pretend it was former and not the later. "I was down there, for the same reasons I go down there all the time." She told him, "Reasons that you share as well, for you are the one who took me into the room in first place!"
"If you want to know why then find come with me, Arthur. Find your memory and let it fill the holes. We meet down there a few nights week, and have for a few months now. Since . . . . " Since his father almost had her killed. " . . . What good would going back to your chambers do? You'd question me some more, and I would give you what answers I could. You'd be no closer to remembering and I'd be no closer to helping you! If you do not wish me to go with you then go your self. I will await you in your chambers. But you need to look there and see what you can find. It's where it all happened. Something will be there."

He could barley hear her words past when she said that she went there all the time; that he was the one who had invited her down there; that they meet a few times a week down there. That was . . . just utterly perplexing! He was not just going to accept this bit of information she provided him with without inquiring further. Then again, he barley accepted any piece of information he was told tonight without questioning it further. It just felt like the more answers he got, the more his mind spun around, unable to determine the full truth. "What do you mean we meet down there a few times a week? That's preposterous!" Arthur paused, realizing his words may have been a bit harsh. He paused, briefly closing his eyes, finding himself struggling to maintain composure yet again. After a few silent deep breathes, he opened his eyes, looked at her and tried this again.
"What I mean to say, is that why do we go down there so frequently." This time, his voice was a lot calmer and he hoped it sounded less accusatory. "Guinevère, that is not a room that I visit often. It we require a few moments of privacy." as friends of course! "Then we can just as easily meet in my chambers. Why, a few nights a week do we go somewhere that I would never permit anyone to go." He would get back to everything she had said once he figured this one thing out. It may not be the most pressing matter at the moment, but it effected him; it mattered to him why he was inviting random -- sort of random -- women to his mother's room.

Guinevère took a step back at his questions her mind catching up to what she had said. Oh dear. This was why she did not play these games often! She wasn't very good at them! Half truths, white lies! It was madding! She almost wanted to just tell him about them and not play it anymore but the fear of hearing the same words tossed back at her but about his feelings for her keep her lips sealed.
"When your father found our we were . . . . " Lovers, "Friends he ordered you to stop being so with me. When you refused I was banished from the kingdom. Before I could leave something magical was found in your room and I was accused of putting it there. I would have been burned at the stake had you not caught the real person who'd done it. Your father assumed you only became my friend because of this spell. It was safer for me if he was to believe it however we could not be seen near each other nor could I be seen going into your room. You told me it was a safe place, because no one was allowed there."
Her voice shook with the memory of the days, and the fear. At the fear of losing him twice. At being dragged from the room knowing this was the last time she was allowed to see him. At being ordered to die. "I'm sorry, Arthur." She told him as she blinked away the tears from the memory. "But, somethings are hard for me to talk about. Can you just go look for your clues and give me a moment alone?" Then she walked past him--away from the room--so she could fight the fear.
Because deep down she knew she could be about to loose him again.

His father had found out they were friends?! She had been banished?! She had been sentenced to death?! That had all seemed a bit too extreme. His father probably thought that he was having an affair with Guinevère or something. That would make more sense for he could not imagine him otherwise being so opposed to having a friendship with a servant. He knew Merlin and him were friends, but Merlin was not being banished from the kingdom or sentenced to death. His father must have thought there was something more with him and Guinevère. But even now, Arthur was not cold enough to not feel complete sympathy towards her for having to go through such an ordeal. All because they were friends. And instead of taking that as a learned lesson, she instead agreed to meet him elsewhere? She really was devoted to him; and he really did consider her to be so close if he was willing to find ways for them to meet, for it had to have been his idea.
He was not sure what to say. He was left speechless at finding this out. It seemed that he was not expected to say anything either, for she asked for a moment alone and Arthur would respect that. He needed to start thinking of someone other than himself right now. He needed to understand just how painful it was for her to have everything they've been through . . . be completely voided from his mind. It could not be easy. This was clearly something she was still so very upset over . . . for it had been the first time in the entire evening that she had asked for a moment alone and walked away. He would not press her for more information right now, and next time he did, he would phrase things far more delicately. But for now, he would go to his mother's room and not ask her to come. This time, it was not because the location was too private; it was because she had asked for a moment alone. With that thought, and this shocking news, Arthur began to head to his mother's room.
********************
Gaius had not had a moment's rest and he felt no closer to finding the remedy to this strange spell. He had sent Merlin off to find some herbs, but really, they needed to find the exact spell so that they could reverse it. Gaius hobbled down the hall and even though there was no draft, his hair flew in the artificial wind created only by his quick paces. He was well aware of the severe repercussions of this spell which was why they needed to act as quickly as possible. Gwen had told him that only a few people knew of the King's condition, and so hopefully, it would remain that way. They could not afford the entire kingdom finding out. It had already taken quite some adjusting for them to accept the new leadership and the new knights. Even then, tensions remained high.
As Gaius walked down, he noticed Guinevère on the side, standing there, and he knew her well enough to recognize that she was crying. "Gwen?" He asked as he went towards her and gently placed a hand on her shoulder. "Whats wrong my child?" He further inquired. Had something happened to Arthur? Had the situation escalated somehow? Something surely had to have happened for Gwen to get so upset. It was understandable of course. This could not be easy for her. It was not easy for any of them.

Guinevère heard a voice and looked up to see Gaius. She gave him a soft smile and used her hand to clean her cheek. "I am well, no need to worry. I am just taking a moment alone before going to meet Arthur in his chambers." She did not go into detail, for she really did not want to worry anyone nor cause anyone more stress then they might already feel.
"Do you have news?" She asked hoping that was why he was out here, though she knew she could not expect him to work though the night with out taking a walk to ease any pains that might come from sitting too long. "If you need help then I can do Merlin's job until he returns." Leaving Arthur would be hard, but maybe he could keep looking for clues, while they were gone.
Talking with someone--even just a few simple moments--helped clear her mind. Guinevère could stand by Arthur and be brave but sometimes she still felt the servant. It was times like these she felt anything but the queen he claimed to see in her.

Arthur at the last minute changed his mind. Instead of going to his mother's room, he decided to go back to his chambers instead. There could be more clues when it came to finding out more about his past. He still had his safe that he had not yet opened,a and that pile of papers that sat at the desk, only a few of which he had looked through. He would eventually go to his mother's room, but not right now. He felt it was more important to go to his room and maybe, he would ask Guinevère to accompany him, just to show that there were no hard feelings. It would not be something he would feel entirely comfortable with doing, but hearing all that she had been through, all the pain it had caused her, she deserved compassion and understanding and it seemed Arthur had been seriously lacking in those departments. Yes. That would be his plan! He only hoped that such a small gesture on his part, would show that he had not intentionally meant to hurt her, even if his words suggested as much.
********************
Gaius kept his hand in place there for a prolonged moment, an act of comforted, before he brought arm back to rest his by side. "I'm afraid nothing new has developed," he admitted to her, wishing that he had better news. He had just recently seen her and since then, no further developments had been made. He knew this was taking a strong emotional toll on Gwen. Perhaps her more than anyone else, and for completely understandable reasons. "I know that this is difficult Gwen, but Arthur needs you right now, more than ever. Even if he does not realize it," Gaius began to say, encouraging her there may not be many others who could do so right now.
His eye brow arched a bit high, which often happened when he was speaking about a serious matter. Or well, it quite conceivably happened all the time. "You need to stay with him, help him in whatever way you can. Merlin and I will take care of the rest." She was doing her job wonderfully, as she had given him updates on the King's situation. "This will all soon come to pass," he added in another attempt to encourage her and comfort her. She was always the one providing hope for others, but sometimes, it was nice to hear those reassuring words from someone else.

Guinevère smiled up at him and knew he was right, even if it hurt to have him all but look though her at times, or to have the constant reminder of how far they've had to come--He was her life. She could not turn her back on him anymore then she could herself. "I know. I feel so helpless right now, that is all. I feel like I should be doing something more then . . . . then just talking to him." Even if it was her favorite thing to do. Just talk to Arthur.
She reached up and put her hand over his for a moment, in thanks for the comfort before taking a deep breath for courage. "Walk me to his chambers?" She asked him, "And maybe between us both we can think of something we have missed?" At lest she hoped so, they needed something to give them hope. Guinevère hooked her arm in his and walked beside him up the many steps toward Arthur's room. "He's struggling to remember, and I think I am running out of answers to give him. Merlin needs to come see him once he's back. If only for a few moments. I think having someone come that was a friend before all this will help him."

When Arthur got to his chambers, he noticed that Guinevère had not yet arrived. That would give him some time to continue to build up the questions he had. He first went over to the pile of papers and just sifted through them. The only thing that had immediately caught his interest was a letter, written in unfamiliar penmanship. He quickly read through it and made a face when he was done. Well that certainly was . . . . . one of the most dramatic love letters he had ever read in his life. He looked at the name at the bottom and it was signed Vivian. Vivian! That was Olaf's daughter! . . . Oh. The one who Guinevère had told him he had been enchanted to fall in love with. Why on earth had he kept this ridiculous letter.
He looked at the back of it and saw that he'd scribbled some notes on it. So that's why he still had it. He'd been using it as scrap. Arthur withheld a shudder and tucked the letter in between the stack of papers once again so that it was not at the top in case someone came in and saw it. Well that was enough of that. He went over to his locked cabinet, wondering what content would be in here. Hopefully, some of the things he would remember and those of which he did, he prayed they were still in here. For if they were not . . . he was fairly certain he would grow panicked.
********************
Gaius felt bad for the poor girl. He wanted to encourage her as best he could. "You are helping him in ways that the rest of us can't." The ways in only a woman who loved a man, and vice versa, could help. "You talking to him, it precisely what he needs most right now." Gaius did not need to think twice about her question for the two of them were already on their way to the king's chambers. She was right in suggesting that Merlin needed to talk to him, but chances were that would not happen until early in the morning. "How much does he currently know?" Gaius asked, wondering if he knew about the major events of the past three years.
"Merlin will probably tend to him in the morning. So until then, we need to make sure he stays in a proper frame of mind." Especially if he knew of Morgana no one was still over her betrayal and many in the kingdom were suffering emotionally from it: Uther being a prime, and extreme, example of such a person. The last thing any of them needed was for Arthur to have a breakdown, deemed unfit to rule. For that would leave Camelot without a king. Which was one of the worst positions for any kingdom to be in.

Guinevère smiled as they walked knowing that Gaius was right. "Only what I've told him. He knows he is king, and that Morgana betrayed him. All of us. He knows she has magic and that he has knighted commoners." He just did not know that he was in love with her. She'd not brought herself to tell him that part yet.
"He seemed disbelieving at first but I think he believes most of what I tell him now. Maybe if you stayed and spoke with him a moment, it would help ease his mind as well. He is going to look for some clues where he was found. Maybe he will find something that will help you?"
They were just on the last steps and but a few turns to Arthur's room, and Guinevère was offering to give Gaius a reason to stay for a few moments. She did not want him to feel like he had to run off. Besides, maybe Gaius would notice things she would not. He knew so much and very wise. If Arthur brought back something of note then Gaius could be the one who knew what it meant.

As soon as Arthur opened the door to the cabinet, he began to look through the contents of it. Some of the things were the same, some were added. There was nothing out of the ----- and that was when he saw something that made his eyes widen. He had to pull it out, hold it, to actually believe it was in there. He knew what it was without having to open the small box, but he did so anyway. It was his mother's ring. It was a ring that he had decided years ago to give the woman that he was going to marry; the future Queen of Camelot. He knew that Guinevère said he was in love . . . but to have taken this out, meant that he was preparing to give it to her, sooner rather than later. This quite honestly terrified him. For he was planning on marrying a woman he did not even remember!
It got more shocking.
He closed the box and set it aside, continuing to rummage through. He found something else belonging to his mother, a necklace! It did not hold any sort of marital significance . . . just a strong sentiment. How much of his mother's belongings was he planning on giving away to her?! He knew that the day would come where he would marry and some of her possessions would be passed down on to her. But this, this was too much! And to think, that it got even more shocking. For within the small safe, he saw . . . the Queen's crown. The crown! It was wrapped in silk cloth but once again, Arthur did not need to open it to know what it was. In fact, he did not even open this particular item. He just started at it, as it remained covered. He needed to find out who this woman was! He needed to know the woman that he was so prepared to give everything to, and call his wife; call her, the Queen of Camelot.
Arthur slightly jumped when he heard approaching footsteps to his room, and voices that belonged to them. He instantly recognized them as Guinevère and Gaius. Arthur had enough of trying to fish for information from Guinevère and decided that he was not going to wait until dawn. There was something -- many things actually -- that she was not telling him and even if there was the faintest chance that she could reveal some of it now, he would take it . . . without her knowing he was here of course. He quickly put everything back into the safe, locked it, and crept over to the corner of his room. He pressed his back against the wall, the larger cabinet hiding him. He was right near the servant's entrance to which the door was open so he could easily make a run for it and act as if he was only just entering. He steadied his breathing, and remained perfectly still, waiting to hear what sort of information would be revealed during his eavesdropping.
********************
Gaius did not fail to recognize that she left out the part about her. But he was not going to encourage her to tell him unless it was something she wanted to do. It was a lot of information to have to tell someone. "I will do whatever I can," he offered when she suggested that he stay and see what he could do. "We need not tell his father right now," Gaius said, assuming that she already knew this but just wanted to make sure that those who knew were all on the same page. "Not until we have discovered more on the nature of this spell." He paused when they arrived at his room, allowing her to enter first. "How many people know about this so far?" He asked, wondering if anyone else had found out since the last time she had updated him.

"Your right. With the way Uther reacts to magic this is the last thing he needs to know. If we can find a way to break the spell before he ever finds out then it would be for the best." She admitted as she entered the room and turned to look at Gaius. "I'm worried for him, Gaius. Both of them. Arthur's been king for a week and already someone is attacking the kingdom? Sometimes it feels as if we will never see peace again."
How many knew? "I know, and you and Merlin. Arthur told Percival earlier but I doubt he'd the type to share the news with anyone. I think it's just us. Arthur isn't the type to just tell everyone." She turned and walked a few feet over to the bed, resting her hand on the large pole. She took a deep breath before turning to look at Gaius. "When Arthur joins us, I fear I must ask something of you." She forced her eyes up to his. "He knows that there is a girl in his life but I have not told him who she is. Percival seems to not have told him either. Can you not tell him? I know that asking you to keep something from the king is horrid of me but . . . I don't think he's ready to know." She didn't think she was ready to see his face when he knew.

When Guinevère and Gaius entered, Arthur nearly held his breath. He knew that spying was wrong . . . but that never stopped him from doing it. Besides, this was something that he absolutely needed to know. He had tried so many times to get Guinevère to tell him, yet she always avoided it. Granted, he had not asked her since they found out that dawn was no longer a time when his memory would come back. But he doubted this fact would force her to give him the woman's name. He did not appreciated the secrecy of such a thing. Everyone seemed to know! Had Merlin been around, Arthur would have demanded he tell him. He could have asked Percival . . . but they already had a strange conversation and such a question would have only made it stranger. No. Arthur would have to find out on his own, and if eavesdropping on two people's conversation was the only way to do it, then so be it.
There it was! That was what Arthur was waiting to here! The subject of the woman he loved had been brought up! Arthur distracted himself from all his thoughts so that he could focus all his attention on each and every word they spoke. It seemed that Gaius knew who it was without her having to say the name aloud.. But even if they did not bluntly state a name, perhaps they could give him clues as to who she was, or where he could find her.
********************
It was true. And considering Uther's current state, he could not handle finding anything else out that would cause him great distress. "It is expected for attacks to pursue, especially just when there is a new king on throne." Many others saw that as a good time to attack a kingdom for the new king was adjusting to his role, suspecting of being unfamiliar with everything. They believed it to be a vulnerable state for the kingdom. "And especially in Camelot's case as the situation here is unique." It did not happen often that a young king took the throne while his father was still alive so many people would be curious about this, and enemies could possibly use it to their advantage. But Gaius did not think that was what this was about. There was something more at work here.
He listened to her explain who knew and who did not, and remained silent for she seemed as if she wanted to say something. He clasped his hands in front of him and slightly lowered his head, paying close attention to his next words. When she spoke them, he gave a half smile, a very subtle one. "It is not my secret to tell," he told her in a kind and reassuring voice. This would not be the first thing Gaius had kept from the current king. It was just another to add to the list. But of course, Gwen did not know that. He took a couple of steps closer towards her. "Tell him only when you are ready to and when you believe he is ready to know." She should not feel pressured for it was not something easy to tell another, especially in their circumstances, which was something else labeled unique. "You know him better than anyone in this case." It was his way of saying that he trusted her judgment, and that she would tell him that she was the woman, only when she felt he would be ready to hear it.

Guinevère gave him a smile that showed just how hard it was for her to have asked that of him, and gratefulness to his reply. "Thank you. I have told him that I will tell him at dawn but when I made such a promise I did not know it was a spell. That he might never remember anything on his own." She prayed Gaius found something. That Arthur would burst in here and have clues that solved everything!
Guinevère didn't often confide in Gaius, but there were times she had run to him. Gaius had known about her and Arthur for years now, and knew about most the bigger events between them. He's been who she ran to about Morgana's magic, and was like a father to her in many ways this last three years. "I just fear he is will disappointed when he finds out." And her heart could not take such a look on his face.
Gaius was right, she knew him the bed. She knew how to read his face and tell how he felt or even at times what he was thinking. She'd been watching him so closely for years now that she felt she could tell exactly the emotions and thoughts in his head when he found out that not only was he knighting commoners but marrying servants.

Damn it! Gaius wasn't being helpful at all! He was saying that it wasn't his secret to tel! Why couldn't he just say the name instead of being so cryptic! He knew he was respecting the privacy of the woman, but neither of them knew he was in here so why not just blurt out the name?! And why was it Guinevère who seemed to have some authority on the subject? It did not make sense. Was she that much closer to the woman than anyone else? Did she know her the best and therefore, spoke on her behalf about all matters? It certainly seemed to be that way thus far. Furthermore, she went on to say that he would be disappointed. As if she was so sure about it. This did not make an ounce of sense. He had already told her that he could not possibly be disappointed with the noblewoman she had talked about . . . not after hearing all she had done for him. Yet, the questions that Guinevère had asked him earlier rung in his head. Why had he not married her yet? He had everything ready to marry her -- the Queen's crown and a ring -- but why had it taken him three years to begin to prepare for such an event? Arthur continued to subconsciously hold his breath . . . waiting anxiously to hear more.

"Hopefully by dawn, we will have more answers." While it was not a time that would guarantee the return of the prince's memory, it was a time that they could aim for. He truly felt bad for the poor girl. "Do not despair Gwen," he said in another attempt to comfort her. "We will find out the true cause of this, and find a way to reverse it," he told her in a sure voice. Between him and Merlin -- and Merlin's secret adviser -- they often found the answers to whatever concerns and hardships befell the kingdom. Gaius was confident in their ability to do so now as well.
"In the meantime," he began as he went over to where he saw a shawl lying on the bed. It was easily recognizable as Gwen's. He picked it up and passed it to her. "Take care of yourself. Do not fear for the worst." The worst being that Arthur would not get his memory back. He was trying to tell her not to fear for it, because it would not be the case. They would find the remedy, of this the physician was sure of.
