Hector was born the illegitimate son of King Ban of Berwick and Lady de Maris of Camelot. The Lady de Maris had received the family’s manor as the only living relative of her father, in one of the outlying districts of Camelot. On a return trip, eastward, back to his kingdom, Ban had been forced to seek lodgings at her manor, being the only suitable lodgings for miles. He had been a close ally of the Pendragons. What had been meant to be an overnight stay turned to several days, as the King had become infatuated with the young noblewoman. His affections were returned by her and they spent at least one night of his stay intimately. Soon after she knew that she was pregnant, and had exchanged correspondence with King Ban confirming and accepting the news, word arrived that King Ban had been attacked and killed in the invasion of Gaul king Claudus.| ~ • ~ | Character Basics | ~ • ~ |

.:Personality:. As an only child, Hector has been spoiled to some extent, but not with the trappings of wealth, but with his mother’s attention. It was not as a noble, rich in wealth or in lands aplenty that he was raised. In fact, he was not even dissuaded of learning a trade. The most convenient one for his interest to arise in, in fact, was blacksmithing, since there was a blacksmith shop close by the small manor that he and his mother had occupied. He was not so enamored of the day-to-day goods that the blacksmith worked on, but more specialty items like swords that appeared ever so often.
Now, the manor was in a fairly secluded location, so the young man, as he grew was not exposed very much to the social sides of life. In fact, his mother was not prone to exposing him much to other people. Actually, at times it seemed that there was something that she was trying to protect him from. As the years of his youth swept by there were times that the young Hector thought that she was just trying to keep him with her. Since he was not exposed to people very much he naturally developed a quiet, shy, and reserved manner. This was not to say that he could not forcefully express himself. This occurred most often if he detected an insult toward his mother or if someone was taking advantage of another. In most cases, though, he was simply more than willing to keep his own council. Now, although he was shy, he was also inquisitive by nature, and he began asking the blacksmith about various aspects of his craft until the blacksmith would show begin to show and educate him about how metal could be worked.
He is not a noble who is awash in wealth, so from an early age he does not appreciate nobles who are wasteful or thoughtless towards others. Since he is an only child he has a tendency to be both intense and stubborn. However, his interest in the blacksmith and his shop also indicated that he was mechanically gifted as well. It also became obvious before long, especially to his mother, that he had an interest in the artifacts of war and battle as well, that he was constantly searching for a good tutor of. Even though he became primarily self-taught in his swordsmanship behavior, he was very willing to accept any education that he could acquire. As such, the young man acquired several acquaintances, but very few friends, that he is willing to put his absolute trust in. Those few he does trust he will risk much for if he is presented a choice. When it comes to females, however, he has very little experienced has ever had a close relationship develop. Even after his mother tells him who his father is, his personality did not change, although it was probably since he found it difficult to accept, given how she told him. After her death he ad received a letter from her telling him how her property would be distributed, the true nature of his origins, and his seal of nobility.

The Lady knew quite well that King Ban was the father, but there was now no kingdom to seek protection in. Likewise, she being single and unmarried knew the shame that might be associated with the birth knew that she had to leave before she began to show signs of a pregnancy. She let it be known that she was travelling to visit a distant cousin for an extended visit. She travelled to Ealdor to visit with a friend until she came to term. Nearly a year-and-a-half later she returned to her manor, this time with a young infant. She explained that her cousin had given birth to the child, but the cousin had died in childbirth. Since there was no one else to care for the child, she had said, she had brought him back to raise herself. She raised the boy, named Hector, as her nephew even though he was actually her son. The Lady de Marise had not been a young woman when she had given birth, but she had aged rather gracefully. Her son she educated herself and saw that he was quite intelligent, as well as inquisitive. The distant cousin had not been of a noble line, so the boy was raised to think that he would pursue a trade, and the trade that had interested him was the blacksmith trade, especially when it came to the making of articles such as swords.
In her education of him she had included knowledge of honor and the Knight’s code, although she, in the beginning, had her doubts about whether such a life would ever interest him However, with time, his interest changed from simply the making of swords to how they could be used. She also saw him grow tall and strong, reminding her more and more of his father, the late King Ban. Finally, as he moved past his mid-teen years, and seeing how his interests had changed, arranged to have him tutored in swordsmanship and other uses of other instruments of war with the meager funds that she possessed. She also drew up a letter outlining the true nature of his origins, his seal of nobility as a de Maris and the letters that she had exchanged with King Ban, recognizing him as Hector’s father. Finally, at the age of 23, when his biological mother, the woman he had thought was his aunt, died from a fever, Hector received the documents she had prepared for him. He had had his suspicions for some years, but he had loved her, whether she had been his aunt or mother, but he was sad that she could not bring herself to tell him the whole truth. She had told him in the last paragraph of her letter, that, if he chose to, he could seek out a knighthood for himself in Camelot. Hector knew that with the recent attacks of the Great Dragon on Camelot that there might be a need for some new Knights to fill the ranks. He made his preparations, and taking his best horse and some provisions, he set out for Camelot to see if being a Knight of Camelot was his destiny.
