.:Physical Appearance:. Gwaine is of medium height, and although he is muscular he still looks slightly thin when he is wearing fitted clothing. His hair hangs loose upon his shoulders, often looking as if he hasn’t put a comb through it in months, but it cements his wanderer way of life and always has a positive effect on the ladies. He has deep, brown eyes which are both mischievous and also cheeky. He doesn’t don the clothes of a nobleman, even though it is his birthright, as he fits in with his wanderer lifestyle more by wearing peasant clothing, though his slight vanity causes him to always make sure his clothes are washed and presentable at all times and in all situations. He can always conjure up a cheeky grin to woo the ladies, and never likes to look too down in the dumps.

.:Personality:. Gwaine has developed an incredibly laid back attitude to life as a result of his wandering lifestyle. He does not let much ail him, and often just ends up moving from one situation from the next. Outwardly, he appears to have lost his knightly personality, through his currently lifestyle, he still holds his knightly traits close to his heart. The trait which Gwaine holds most close to his heart, through being brought up to be a knight, is valor. He always believes in facing up to adversary with a strong heart, as long as it is in the pursuit of a noble cause. He most famously put this to good use with aiding Arthur Pendragon when he got himself tied up in a bar brawl. Gwaine finds it hard to be loyal to anyone but himself and his own interests as he saw what his father was rewarded with for his loyalty to the King he served under. From a young age, ever since his mother was turned away from the King that his father died fighting for, Gwaine has been sure in his negative views towards the nobility. He believes them to be greedy, and to only want to protect their own interests. He is weary of any nobleman he meets, and is instantly distrusting of them, and cannot understand how any man would want to die for a noble.

Gwaine has no magical abilities, though he swears his charms with women can be compared to as magical. He has no particular negative feelings towards magic, as long as it isn’t being used against him as he was not raised within Camelot.

Gwaine is trained in the art of swordplay, and uses it to his advantage. As well as this, he has often bragged of being able to charm a woman from fifty paces and tries always to live up to his self proclaimed reputation.

Gwaine was born into an already large family in a small estate in Caerleon. His father, Oliver, was a knight, serving under the King of Caerleon, so Gwaine was raised by his mother for a lot of his early childhood. Gwaine’s brothers, as his father was usually away fighting in wars, took it upon themselves to pass down their knight training towards him. He was taught about the virtues of being a knight, such as to be honest, to be loyal and to have respect and mercy. He was instructed in different forms of combat, such as swordplay and hand to hand combat. When his father returned from the wars he was engaged in he was always proud to see how well Gwaine was growing into a knight. Gwaine’s earliest memory of his father was him teaching him different aspects of swordplay just before he rode out on his last journey.

Gwaine’s father was killed during one of the battles on the border of Caerleon, and all Gwaine remembers of the event was how distraught his mother was at the news when it had arrived. As Gwaine’s eldest brother was not yet ready to become a knight, being only thirteen, their family was left in a state of uncertainty. They had no relatives within the kingdom who could help them so Gwaine’s mother, Winifred, decided to petition the king to see if he would aid them in their time of need. She had gone to court to ask for help and protection for her young family. Although the King offered his deepest sympathies to the family that was as far as his hand stretched, and he made it clear the family would receive nothing from him.

The family, young and with climbing debts, had to downsize their home and were thrown into a state of uncertainty. His mother never remarried and his brother, now at the age of fourteen could not support the family. Since hearing of the King’s words, Gwaine’s picture of the nobility was horribly altered. In his innocence he believed that the nobility and royalty would hold similar views to that of the knights, and to help those who were in need. However, at the tender age of seven, Gwaine began to detest all forms of nobility and royalty, believing them to only care about themselves with no exceptions as no one in Caerleon raised a finger to help them either. Although he held the views: that the nobility was greedy, he still kept the knightly views which his father and brothers had taught him close to his heart, even if he didn’t tell anyone that he did.

His mother died when he was in his late teenage years, and he left home shortly after, turning his back on his family and ancestry to start life afresh as there was now nothing to tie him to either. He and his brothers had grown further apart as they had tried to make enough money to support themselves and their mother. From then on Gwaine was set on living the wanderer lifestyle, visiting as many taverns and charming as many pretty ladies as he could. He ventured out of his home in Caerleon, and has been to many kingdoms over the past few years; mainly the ones around Camelot. However, Gwaine still practised his swordplay and his combat skills as he wanted to remain well trained and not lose the skills his family had equipped him with.

Gwaine eventually found himself in what would seem to everyone like an ordinary tavern, but that night would change Gwaine’s life. As he had never let the knightly virtues leave him, he stepped in to defend two strangers in a tavern fight; who he discovered later to be Arthur and Merlin. He was badly wounded in the fight and taken back to Camelot by the pair. Gwaine was later conflicted by the fact he had saved a prince, as his heart had hardened to anyone with royal, or noble blood. Gwaine was forced to rethink all his prejudices against the nobility and he did, after spending some time in Camelot, admit that Arthur was unlike any nobleman he had ever come across. Gwaine, during his time in Camelot, formed a friendship with Arthur’s man servant Merlin, who he tried to defend in a scuffle with two men pretending to be knights. As Arthur stepped in to save Gwaine’s life, as his father Uther was considering Gwaine’s execution, Gwaine was again starting to question his strongly held prejudices.

He demonstrated how far Arthur had made him question his beliefs as he teamed up with him, secretly, to defeat two knights in a melee. However, the strong mixture of Uther banishing him from the Kingdom, and the way Uther treated him in general, caused Gwaine to choose to leave, rather than to serve under the current King. With Uther, Gwaine was certain his ideas about the nobility were well placed, and although he agreed with Merlin that he and Arthur fought well together, he decided to leave Camelot. Gwaine knew he would probably return to Camelot when Arthur was made King, but his reunion with the Prince came much sooner than expected.

Another tavern brawl brought the trio back together for the first time, and the second time he meets the pair they are in the unconventional setting of a prison. After they manage to escape, Gwaine decides to aid Merlin and Arthur on their quest for the Cup of Life. Throughout Gwaine’s travels, he had not met anyone who questioned his philosophy on nobility as much as Arthur had done in their brief exchanges and he showed the loyalty, which had been driven into him during his childhood, as he accompanied Arthur on this quest. He joined Arthur, with other men who they had gathered on their travels, and was made a knight just before they attacked Camelot castle to try and bring Morgana’s reign to an end. He was prepared to fulfil the qualities of being a knight, and was prepared to fight by Arthur’s side, and die for Camelot that night; something which a few years previous he would have laughed at.

Now, a knight of Camelot, Gwaine remains in Camelot, fiercely loyal to Arthur. Gwaine is still quite weary of the nobility, even within Camelot, as Arthur was the first, and the only one to question his beliefs that the royalty and nobility are greedy and merely protect their own interests.
