Merlin creators on the dynamic between Merlin and the Queen and King of Camelot in series 5

When Merlin returns to our Saturday nights later this year, it will open with a two-parter and follow the show’s tradition of jumping forward in time. “All the characters will have moved on a lot,” explains Merlin co-creator Johnny Capps, “and we will see that Gwen is now the Queen of Camelot and has a very different role than she’s had in previous seasons. When we start series 5 I think everone will be surprised where all the characters are.”

It doesn’t seem like love will be on the cards for Merlin, though, at least not yet…. “It’s interesting with Merlin,” says Murphy, “because historically and in the legends – although there are legends that relate to certain romances and seduction – I think in our consciousness he’s a curiously non-romantic figure. In our mind he’s never associated with women, and I guess we stay true to that, but we’d never rule it out. and there are some interesting stories about Merlin being seduced away from the path.”

Wow! I love that picture!! They all look ridiculously happy, which is fantastic! I have to agree with you, Arthur, I am surprised they are skipping time again, but I suppose they want to maybe show Guinevère being more secure in her role as Queen? And it will be interesting to see Arthur all grown up and secure in his marriage! And... no love for Merlin? Aww, poor Merlin!!

In Season 4 of Merlin which just ended on Canal + Family, the sorcerer still hasn't revealed his secret to King Arthur. But according to Colin Morgan, the truth may come out in Season 5...

Have you become an expert on the legend of King Arthur, have you read about the subject?
I've read novels and scholar documents on the subject, but finally I came to the conclusion that I could do what I wanted with the character Merlin. There is no consensus to the character's origins and how much of it is based on myth. The French are sure that Merlin is French, the Scots also make him one of their own. We can therefore make him what we want. Above all, there is nothing in the legend of the character's youth, his learning or the mistakes he made along the way.

This season [4] has seen Merlin as the old sorcerer Emrys [Dragoon] a few times. Do you like this disguise?
To disguise myself as an old man takes hours, but the result is amazing. I love change and I also like the idea that Merlin couldn't change back to his young self. I'd end up playing Merlin with a beard down to the knee! [laughs]

Merlin became very close friends with Gwaine. Why did the writers chose to make them such good friends?
The authors were keen to show what the friendship between Arthur and Merlin would look like if Arthur wasn't the heir to the throne. Gwaine can therefore show Merlin how it feels being treated on an equal footing by a member of nobility. Although Arthur doesn't humiliate Merlin any more, he still can't see him as his equal. Merlin is his servant and one of his subjects. However, with Gwaine Merlin can let go and be himself.

Is Merlin going to reveal his secret in series 5?
I think it's time that Arthur learns the truth. But it will be a real test for both of them and it's uncertain if their friendship'll survive such a revelation. Arthur is so convinced that magic is evil and killed his father and his mother that he'll struggle to remain objective. And Morgana and her scheming'll also have an influence on Arthur's opinion on the use of magic.

Can you share other spoilers from series 5?
The action takes place a few years after season 4. I can also confirm the return of Mordred, but he'll now be played by an older actor named Alexander Vlahos. Anyone familiar with Arthurian legend knows that Mordred plays a central role in the fall of Camelot. His presence is no good omen for the kingdom... Dragons will also be at the heart of the action, because Merlin and Morgana now derive their powers of these magical creatures. Their next battle should be epic. Morgana could outmaneuver him this time...

Did playing the role of Merlin change your live?
This character literally catapulted me out of anonymity. Before that, nobody knew my name or my face. Now, I have fans everywhere! Without this role I would probably have continued to do theater, something I love, but I would not have as many offers. In addition, the series allowed me to develop my acting on camera. It's like a lecture with the added bonus of the lovely and talented co-stars.

So it looks like series 5 will be a few years later and this makes me nervous because they haven't done so good with the time jumps in the past. I was looking forward to seeing Gwen becoming more confident being Queen and also I'm now scared that they will make Gwen barren. But I'm hoping not.
