Sir Elyan!
Tom looked into the mirror trying to sort out his collar and jacket. His wife would always giggle at him and say he had clumsy hands unless he was in his smithy. A sad smile graced his lips when he thought of her. He abandoned his collar and looked down at his children. His eldest, Elyan was attempting to tie his sister’s hair. The result was all over the place, but he was trying to cheer her up. Gwen had been crying all night, her only comfort being her brother's whispers of ‘it’s all right’ and ‘everything will be okay.’ Even now she held on to his hand so tightly with her small chubby fingers as if her life depended on it. His son was wearing black trousers, which he’d always hated. But they were all wearing black today, even his little Guinevère.
He bent down to his children’s heights putting a large hand on each of their shoulders. “Are we all ready?” He smiled warmly at them. Gwen nodded, returning the smile. His son’s face, however, was still stony and cold. Tom wished his children would never have to know the pain of loss but that wasn’t the way the world worked. Elyan looked into his father’s eyes with tears spilling out of his own and whispered, “I miss mummy.” It took all of Tom’s strength not to cry at seeing the pain in his boy’s eyes. “I know,” he finally said. “So do I.” He pulled his children in close and hugged them for all he was worth. When he finally let them go he smiled again, but shakily this time. “Come on, it’s time to say goodbye to your mother.” As he watched his children walk in front of him, he caught sight of a flicker of smile shared between them and watched Gwen squeeze her brother’s hand. It was then that he knew that through devastating loss and heart ache they could still be a family.
