Glossary of Creatures
~ The following is a dictionary of the various magical creatures presented in the Merlin series. It will be frequently updated and added to ~
- Afanc
Is a creature conjured using magic of the elements of earth and water. It has no eyes, and very large teeth. It hatches plagues usually effecting one of the basic elements that it is created from. It can only be defeated by the two elements it is not consisted of: fire and air.- Balorian Spider
Is a very large kind of spider. They have the basic appearance of an extremely large tarantula. They reside in caves beneath the Forests of Balor. They live in large groups and can kill their prey collectively. They are however not immune to mortal weapons so can be destroyed by swords or other man made weapons.- Cockatrice
Is a large lizard like creature. They are abundant in numbers, but can be killed with a proper blow. They are extremely vicious and dangerous. They are known to wander the Forest of Balor and do not need a reason to attack.- Dragon
Is a massively large creature with reptilian features. They have long necks and tails, very large wings, and scaled skin. They posses magical abilities, in addition to their basic skill of producing and shooting out a burning fire from their throat. They can cast spells, and have vast knowledge in the world of sorcery and overcome curses as well as how to kill other mythological or beasts or creatures. They appear to be invulnerable to mortal weapons, immune to bows, arrows, spears, swords, and so on. They are close to be an extinct species.- Goblin
Are miniature creatures who are the masters of mischief. They are small, green, have markings over their skin, and very large facial features. They may be small, but they cause great trouble for the sheer pleasure of causing disturbance, leaving a trail of destruction behind them. They travel as small balls of yellow light enabling them to somewhat fly, or float in the air and move at an accelerated speed making them difficult to catch. They often possess the bodies of humans and the only way they can be forced out is by killing the host body.- Griffin
Is a creature with the body of a lion, and the head and wings of an eagle. It is a large and vicious creature. They are resistant to most mortal weapons and can only be killed with enchanted weapons or magic. They are not commonly seen, and unless witnessed first hand, are believed to just be myth.- Knights of Medhir
This group of seven Knights are stone figures located inside the ruined castle of Idirsholas. Clad in black robes, silver armor and masks, these are a force not to be reckoned with. They can only be brought to life by the use of very powerful sorcery. Over three hundred years ago, these knights were seduced by a sorcerer's call and one by one, they each succumbed to her power. They became an extremely terrifying force, killing ruthlessly throughout the land, leaving a trail of corpses and destruction. Once they are summoned, they are under the control of the one who awoke them, and can not be stopped unless that same person does so.- Questing Beast
Is also known as the Creature of Death. It is a large creature that has the body of a leopard and the head of a snack. Its venom is extremely poisonous, and when falls victim to its bite it almost means certain death. According to the Old Religion, the Questing Beast is a horrible omen. Though it is uncertain as to what it is an omen for, it is generally believed to be a sign for violence, incest and chaos.- Sidhe
[pronounced She] are a race of immortal blue winged humanoid creatures. They live in a place called Avalon, or Island of Youth which can only be accessed by their own, or by immensely powerful sorcerers. They are "masters of Enchantment and a cruel race of beings". They have severe punishments for those who betray their own, which are banishment from Avalon and being put in a mortal body. The only way to break this curse is to sacrifice a prince of nobility.- Troll
Is a creature depicting great ugliness. They have warts, large noses and ears, and a few fang like teeth in their mouths. They are selfish and greedy, and will do whatever it takes to attain power and wealth. They have horrible hygiene, and bad habits as they prefer to live in dirt and filth than cleanliness. They hate sanitary environments and prefer to eat rotten food, giving them a horrible stench that most others can not stand. They live in dark, dirty areas, and do not usually wander around unless they have purpose. They can be easily killed by mortal weapons, as they do not have any magical abilities.- Unicorn
Is a mythological white kind of horse, with a large magical horn protruding from its forehead. It is said to be linked to powerful magic and believed to be pure animals. They are shy creatures and very sought after by hunters and others because of their rarity and beauty. Legend states that if a unicorn is killed, then a curse will fall over the person who has killed it. The only way for this curse to be lifted is for the person who killed the animal proves themselves to be pure of heart by passing a series of tests. If the person proves to be this, then the unicorn will also be brought back to life.- Wildren

Are giant rat like creatures that feast on human flesh. They are however blind and thus use their sense of smell to track their pray. If the smell of humans is masked by another substance with a strong smell, then the Wildren will have difficulty locating them. They mostly live in caves and other dark areas.- Wraith
Is a slain person brought back to life by the use of dark magic. The wraith, resurrected by magic, has the grief and rage of a tormented soul, returning to the earth in a corpse like body, but also indestructible. They can not be killed by normal weapons; only enchanted ones. It is brought by, often seeking revenge for past events. They are believed to only disappear when their task of carrying out their vengeance is complete.
