Elyan had expected Percival's answer. Never had he experienced something like this, and he doubted anyone else had either. These creatures were from hell itself, so how could anyone have seen something like this before. It was like the feeling had gotten under his skin in a way that he had never thought possible. It put fear in his heart that such monsters even existed, that there were such unbelievable evils like this in the world. It was enough to make someone lose faith; lose hope in the goodness in the world. How could anyone believe that there was goodness in the world when it was so thoroughly outweighed by evil? He sighed, there was no point thinking that way, at least not now. This could after all be his last night as part of the living. He didn't want his faith and hope robbed from his heart and soul just before he died. That would be unbearable.
He looked left and right at the empty houses. In all of his time living here, he'd never seen it so...lifeless and empty. No matter what hardships it faces, Camelot always had soul and life, but now, it almost looks like it's dying. He tried to cast the thoughts from his mind, but that grew increasingly difficult by each empty and lifeless house they walked past. He sighed slightly at Percival's silent question, but he could not even begin to form an answer. There was no telling how long this hell on Earth would last. For all he knew, it could last forever, since it seemed that's how deep Morgana's hatred was. It was almost scary how someone could have such blackness in their hearts that they'd want to inflict the pain of hell itself on innocent people.
As they ploughed on through yet another dead street, Elyan felt his heart sink once again at the sight. He'd never get used to it. He tried to help the knights make the fires before his eyes caught movement behind him, it was Percival. Elyan slowly made his way back toward the other knight, who seemed to be walking toward some barrels. His eyes narrowed in confusion before his eyebrows rose, realising what Percival might have seen behind those barrels. His torch ready in his hand, he walked behind Percival. "Did you see something?" The question came out quieter and a lot shakier than he wanted it to be. His nails dug into his palms with how tight he was holding the torch.

Elyan's grin wiped off from his face when Gwaine began pushing him into the room. He stumbled slightly, but stood back up straight, well as straight as he could in the crowded circumstances. The room was absolutely full of people; a few thoroughly drunk men and giggling barmaids; he even thought he saw some children running about. His eyes widened at the sight before him. It had been quite a while since he had been in a room like this and despite his previous reluctance, a grin managed to stretch across his face. A barmaid passed by him with a tray of ale and he grabbed one right off and downed it in one. He swayed slightly again, already feeling a light haze in his head. His better instincts were telling him what a bad idea that was, but right now he wasn't really listening to his better instincts, he thought with a smirk.
“I told you this would be fun!” He let out a laugh and pulled Gwaine from his elbow behind him so he could stand next to him. He looked around the room, still smiling in the face of the slightly out of tune music. The sight was a happy one, but he was still reluctant to dance. "What now?" he very near shouted at Gwaine, over the loud music. Before he could get an answer he felt someone tug at his collar. His eyes widened in alarm when a woman, probably a barmaid, with black hair and a very low cut dress with sleeves down to her shoulders, began dancing with him. He heard her giggling when she took his hands and began practically dragging him around the room. He attempted to look over to where Gwaine was and shot him a look that clearly said 'Help me.'

A strong kingdom had to go through hardships should it ever achieve greatness. The same could be said about people. A person could only truly be great if they have suffered, as horrible as that sounds. But Elyan knew it was true; suffering but coming out on top, it strengthens not only the heart but also the soul. "I'm sure you're wondering why I have asked you to meet me," Elyan's eyes perked up. "Yes," he smiled at Arthur. He was indeed curious, as he usually was. He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion however when Arthur spoke of documents and succession. When Arthur paused, Elyan tried to piece together what this had to do with him. He tried to an extent not to involve himself in politics, which to be honest had been becoming increasingly hard since becoming the queen's brother. Elyan still hadn't quite caught on to what Arthur was trying to say.
When Arthur continued to speak though, of anything happening to him and Gwen, it finally hit him. His mouth hung open slightly, and his eyebrows rose, when he finally realised what Arthur was saying. So that's why he had mentioned documents and succession. He let out a breath. Elyan dreaded to think of any harm coming to his sister, or to his king, or rather his brother in law, and sincerely hoped that such a thing would never happen. He still could not speak. "Then I would ask if you would allow us to list you as the successor." When Arthur finally said the words, Elyan could not say anything right away. He just stared at Arthur blankly for a few moments. "Wait," he paused. "Am I getting this correctly." Maybe he had heard Arthur wrong, or had just misunderstood him. "You want me," he pointed at his own chest for added effect. "To be the successor to the throne?"

“You’ll be fine, you’re a knight, you have to dance now and again.” Elyan narrowed his eyes at Gwaine. "I think there's a pretty big difference between dancing in the castle and dancing in there," he said pointing toward the door into ultimate humiliation. He wasn't the best dancer anyway, he'd never needed to know how to when he'd just been a blacksmith. But after becoming a knight, and a few gruelling lessons in things like footwork, he had become alright at dancing formally. At least that's what he thought. He was fairly certain that the dancing on the other side of the door was very different from what he'd learned. He was already a pretty clumsy dancer to begin with and he didn't need to show Gwaine, of all people, that.
He looked down at the drink in his hands with wide eyes when Gwaine proposed he should just down it. Elyan had been drunk before...many times. Almost every time though, he'd do something horrible that he'd most certainly regret the next day, if he remembered that is. Obviously, Elyan wasn't quite as wild as he used to be, but that didn't change the fact that he wasn't the best at holding his liquor. He looked back up at Gwaine with a reluctant look on his face and sighed. This is what he signed up for when he decided to go out with Gwaine, he might as well follow through. He began gulping down the full tankard of ale until there was not a drop left. He swayed slightly from the sudden intake of so much alcohol but got back steadily to his feet. "Right then," he rubbed his hands together, looking at the dreaded door with the loud music on the other side. "Ladies first," he smirked at Gwaine, while holding his hand out in front of him mockingly.

“Well, it’s not the first time I’ve been called trouble.” He chuckled at that. "I'm almost certain it won't be the last," he smirked at her playfully. Looking at the heavily pregnant women before him he could hardly imagine her as a troublesome young lady, except for that playful glint in her eye. He'd recognise that anywhere. He chuckled at her next words. “But thank you.” He smiled warmly at her. "You're very welcome, and I'm sure your child will be great." He had genuinely meant what he said. If they needed him he'd help, even if her children did happen to be little hell raisers. He'd rather they weren't of course, but he was rarely lucky like that. "Of course if they are wild hellish children, I'll be running for the hills," he said in mock seriousness, before laughing.
Perfection could only really be interpreted. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say. Perfection is something one can only strive for, but never attain. It was better that way. He smiled at her when she spoke. "Well good, because I'm sure if I told the gardener that I didn't think the gardens were perfect, let’s just say I really don't like the look of that pointy rake." He laughed. The gardeners worked hard to keep the gardens up to a royal standard, so he imagined they wouldn't be particularly happy if Elyan ever criticised their hard work. They'd run after him with all sorts of weapons which had happened to Elyan once before after a complete misunderstanding. It wasn't fun.
He had every belief that both Caitrin and her child would be completely healthy after birth. But he would still keep them in his prayers if sheer hope and confidence was not enough. Plus she had a shooting star in her favour, so what could go wrong? He froze for a split second but not long enough for Caitrin to notice. Whenever he said or even thought that, something always went wrong. Then again things usually went wrong for Elyan, so he was probably just being overly paranoid. “Perhaps the spirits tell of good things to come for you as well my Lord?” He smiled at her suggestion. "Oh I don't know about that," he chuckled. "Anyway I'm pretty sure the light was looking at you," he said teasingly. He liked to believe in things like miricles and 'shooting stars' it made the world mysterious and spectacular, like there is always more to it than any one person can know. "Do you believe in this kind of stuff?" He waved his arm toward the sky where the shooting star had been.

Elyan rolled his eyes at Gwaine's smug face. He knew it would happen but that knowledge certainly didn't make it any better. He decided it was no fun being the sore loser and he should just get over it, though he didn't particularly like losing. It seemed Gwaine, however, was enjoying his moment of winning. He watched the smug knight address the others at the table who also looked less than happy at losing too, but the smirk he shot Elyan's way made him narrow his eyes slightly. “Another game, or should I buy a round?” He didn't really want to lose to Gwaine again and risk watching his smugness emerge once more. "Another drink would definitely be nice," he smiled taking the last gulp from the tankard of ale in his hand. His brain was telling him that another drink was not a good idea and would probably lead to other drinks. But he had just lost a game to Gwaine of all people, so basically he deserved a good drink.
Elyan's eyes widened slightly in alarm as Gwaine suddenly stood up. The wink directed at Elyan didn't exactly soften his alarm or confusion. He stood up rather reluctantly and took a cautious step in front of Gwaine to where he was motioning. Elyan creased his eyebrows in confusion and was wary in his footsteps. He heard the sound of some music playing in the other room, and smiled. The people in there must be having fun. “How are you at dancing my man?” His face instantly dropped as Gwaine continued. He had to be joking. "Wait you want me...to dance...in there?" he pointed at the door leading to the room where the sound of a lute was coming from. Elyan wasn't particularly good at dancing and he did not wish to humiliate himself here...in front of Gwaine. "I need a drink." He said more to himself than to Gwaine. If he was going to do this, then he did not wish to be sober and remember the inevitable humiliation to come.

"In a good way or a bad way?" He laughed at Merlin's expression. "I most definitely mean it in a good way." Merlin had a very unique and cheery personality which was something Elyan admired. He always had a sort of mystery about him, like there was something more and deeper, something beneath the cheery and happy surface. He was probably just over analysing things. He did that a lot and more often than not he'd just be wrong, which was probably the case now. Merlin didn't seem like the mysterious, sombre type, but as they say always look out for the ones you'd least expect. He smiled inwardly at the thought. "Besides, being ordinary is hardly good fun at all is it," he nudged him playfully while smiling with his eyebrows raised.
"Thankyou anyway," He grinned at Merlin and laughed at his next words. "Aww, come on," he nudged him. "You are much more than Arthur's dogsbody. In fact I'm pretty sure you're his best friend," he smiled. "A best friend that does his laundry, polishes his armour, dresses him, mucks out his stables," he let the list trail off and replaced it with laughter. They had an odd relationship, but hey it worked. Who was he to judge? "Now then, I'm going to ask you a very serious question Merlin," he said in mock seriousness. "In one word, I've described you as extraordinary. So, how would you describe me in one word?" He tried to keep up the serious approach, but the idea sort of shattered as soon as a grin stretched across his face. He was genuinely curious, and awaited Merlin's answer.

He meant his words with all his heart. He hadn't even given them a second thought; it was just how he felt. He was extremely loyal to Camelot, and he didn't just give out loyalty like that lightly, it had to be earned. After everything that happened with Morgana and her reign, he had no doubt that his loyalty had most definitely been earned by Camelot. After all, he had been willing to lay down his life for both Camelot and Arthur. He had also become a knight, so loyalty was a given. He was honoured to be a knight, and he was determined to prove that to Sir Iwan. Just because he was not exactly a noble, he had the right to be a knight just like everyone else; just like Iwan. Being a knight should not be based on one's blood, but on one's heart, even if that broke the rules. He'd make Iwan see that...eventually.
"Well if you protect her as well as you speak of her, Camelot will be in safe hands." He grinned at Iwan's words. It seemed there was hope for him yet. "That is a gracious thing to say, thank you." Maybe he could make a good impression after all since Sir Iwan was actually giving him a compliment. "I'm sure all the knights feel that way though." Well not all the knights, but he knew many of them had lain down their lived for the sake of Camelot's survival and many of them had lost them in the process. He sighed inwardly when he thought of all of those lost in the recent battle against Morgana. What an unexpected betrayal that had been. He knew he was lucky to be alive and would forever be grateful for that. It was no secret that many weren't quite as lucky.
"Shall we?" He motioned in front of him. Now was as good a time as any to continue on their little tour. Elyan didn't have any other questions...yet. At least none about the technicalities of how to be a knight which is why he was here in the first place. It was also probably what Iwan had meant when he'd previously asked if Elyan had any more questions; but he'd let his curiosity take over. They might as well get a move on though, so they wouldn't take all day. Honestly how many other places pertaining to knights could there be. Elyan could only really think of the training grounds. Isn't that basically all he was going to do all day as a knight, train for battle? At least they were no longer arguing which was always a plus. There was still hope for them yet.

Elyan couldn't help but laugh at Merlin's words. Of course Merlin spoke of interesting things, he did call him wise after all. But that's not to say Merlin doesn't speak about interesting things...a lot. He continued to chuckle when Merlin asked who he'd rather be stuck in a cell with, him or Gwaine. He already knew the answer to that and couldn't agree with Merlin more. "If I was stuck in a cell with Gwaine for any amount of time, I'm not very sure I'd be able to bear it." Gwaine talked even more than Merlin did, and most of it was hardly interesting or even relevant at all. It was like he talked merely for the sake of talking. He'd probably have the worst luck imaginable if for any reason he would be stuck in a cell with Gwaine. He might even turn suicidal, he thought over dramatically. He hoped they weren't jinxing it. Elyan smiled weakly at Merlin's words about Gwen. He knew Merlin was right and nodded in agreement. "Yeah I know," he sighed. "I just really wish she didn't have to." He hated the idea of his little sister having to defend herself for any reason. It was supposed to be his job to protect her and he wasn't really doing a good job of that.
As they spoke of secrets Elyan awaited Merlin's answer. He wasn't really sure what he was expecting Merlin to say. He had no idea of the nature of the secrets that Merlin could keep in that strange mind of his. But he had made the offer for a reason. Although he didn't really have any huge secrets he knew what a burden they could be. Sometimes, he would notice small moments when Merlin was looking elsewhere; he'd have a look on his face so beyond his years, like he held the responsibility of the whole world on his shoulders. He'd always wondered about that, but had chosen not to pry too much, although he was pretty curious. Elyan narrowed his eyes slightly at his words but just nodded. "but that's all there is really, nothing else. Just me...little old Merlin..." He chuckled in disbelief. "I don't think you could ever be 'just little old Merlin,'" he began. "There is a reason you are such a friend to Arthur and to all of us really. You may not be a knight, but there is nothing ordinary about you, Merlin." If he had to describe Merlin, ordinary is word that wouldn't for a second even cross his mind. "In fact if I had to describe you, I'm pretty sure I'd say...extraordinary," he smiled.

Elyan’s eyebrows rose at the other man’s slight hesitancy and frown. He realised it was quite a personal question, however whenever a question or a thought popped into Elyan’s head he generally had the tendency to just blurt it out. Being a knight was a huge responsibility and Iwan took it so seriously, that Elyan couldn’t help but think that maybe it was a burden. Which had led him to ask the question. At the time it was taking Sir Iwan to answer the question, Elyan almost thought he might answer yes. He was sure being a knight must have its sacrifices. With responsibility always comes sacrifice, which was part of the reason Elyan had ran from it so much. He wasn’t sure he was quite prepared to make such sacrifices, but decided he’d deal with that when he got there. That was his general way of dealing with things.
“Of course I don’t regret it.” Elyan creased his eyebrows slightly when Iwan finally answered his question. It was almost like he was attempting to convince himself rather than Elyan. “Do you?” He thought for a moment. He hadn’t really been a knight long enough to think whether he regretted it or not, at least not like Iwan has. But he was not hesitant in his answer. “No, not as far as I can tell so far,” he began, smiling to once again attempt to lighten the mood. “Although it holds great responsibility, being a knight is one of the greatest honours one can have bestowed on oneself,” he said sincerely. He did not take being a knight for granted despite what the other knight may think. “I love Camelot and am loyal to her like no other land on this Earth. It is therefore my duty to serve her, like she has served me.” Even though he left, Camelot had always been and always will be his home. “It’s only fair that way, right?” He finished off, matter-of-factly.

Elyan laughed at her words about what she must have been like in her days at court. He decided there was no need to pry any longer because he had a pretty good idea about what she meant. "If I ever have children," he mused. "I would most definitely not want them to take after my amazing ability to attract trouble," he chuckled. He only escaped most of the impossible situations he had constantly landed himself into, by pure and utter luck. Either that or his sister Gwen would help him out. Maybe that was reason enough that Elyan should steer clear of having his own children. “If I do my job they won’t need a push.” He chuckled. "I'm sure you'll be an excellent mother, you'll do your job amazingly" he said sincerely. He didn't doubt his words at all. "And if you and your husband ever need help, don't hesitate to ask." He meant that genuinely.
He was staring at a couple of forget me not's. They were one of Gwen's favourite flowers if he remembered correctly. He'd have to ask her about that in the morning, or the next time he saw her. “Then what would you suggest my Lord, to make it completely perfect?” He smiled at her words and had to think for a moment. "Nothing in this world is truly perfect," he began. "But I think that is the beauty of it." Nothing is perfect because nothing should be perfect. Elyan believed it was better that way. The garden was not perfect which just resulted in making it more spectacular. It gave it a more rural and natural feeling. "If it was perfect," he began. "Then I don't think it would be quite as beautiful," he sighed. "What do you think?"
The light in the sky was unlike anything he had ever seen before. Another may call it magic, but Elyan did not think sorcery was part of it. He had heard of something like it described to him before. A shooting star, they called it, to be seen at least once in one's lifetime. But hearing about it and seeing it were two very different things indeed. He grinned at Caitrin when she said she saw it too. So, it was not just some trick of the eyes. He was relieved that it was in fact real and not just proof that he should sleep. “What do you think it means?” He paused for a moment in thought. The smile on his face after seeing such a thing had not yet subsided. "I think it may be a sign from the spirits." What a pleasant thought that was. "Even those beyond the stars themselves believe in Camelot and its prosperity," he chuckled incredulously. "And the stars must think that your baby will be strong and healthy," he smiled warmly at her. "A story you can tell the little one when they're older."

“If my children play the courts as well as I did, I will be impressed, though concerned of course.” He chuckled at her words. Though was left wondering a bit about what she meant. "Concerned?" he asked lifting an eyebrow, while letting out a chuckle. He hadn't had the chance to see the Lady Caitrin at court, and was curious as to how good she was at playing them. As they spoke of her relationship with his nieces or nephews, he smiled. "Well I do hope so," he said in reply. "I might just give them a bit of a nudge in the right direction though," he said in jest. He was beginning to get excited to meet his niece or nephew already. A little early of course though, since Gwen wasn't even pregnant yet. But this was probably the most he'd ever spoken in regards to the future with anyone, and it wasn't as bad as he had thought.
Elyan could almost laugh at how she appeared on the bench with her large belly resting now. She must have been tired he though. Carrying the weight of another person must have been tiring, and Elyan had to be thankful again that he hadn't been born a girl. He smiled at her thanks and chuckled at her calling him a lord. He was far from it. He did think the pink flower looked rather pretty in her red hair though. He took a seat next to her and just revelled in the natural beauty of the night in the gardens. It was like a picture out of a painting. “It’s beautiful out here isn’t it?” He looked over at her. "More than beautiful," he almost sighed. "I think it's very nearly perfect." He looked up and smiled at the clear view at the night sky. There were no clouds, so they could see countless numbers of stars. It was almost magical, though he'd never voice such a thought. A light flashed across the sky and his eyes widened. "Look, my lady." He pointed up towards where he'd seen it. "Did you see that?"

"Arthur is capable of of having that wisdom without asking me" Elyan nodded slightly. That was partially true. Arthur was after all king now, although a particularly young one he still had to be wise. But there are something's Arthur does not know and he needs friends like Merlin to tell him. Elyan listened intently as Merlin continued and couldn't help but laugh with him at the look of mock annoyance on his face. "Merlin I have travelled to many places for many years," he began with mock seriousness. "I can honestly tell I have never met anyone who talks like you," he ended with a chuckle, although it was actually true. He'd never met anyone like Merlin, he was unique in his own way which was refreshing. "Gwen is better at giving advice than me, I hope that she'll be able to offer that again to Arthur soon." Elyan smiled weakly. "She's not better at giving advice, she's just...different." He nudged Merlin's shoulder playfully. "Hey, she'll be back soon enough. I just know it." He had to believe that.
He felt relieved that Merlin was alright with his questions. He certainly had been worried that he'd mindlessly caused him some sort of pain. Elyan knew how hard it was to talk of people that have passed on. He was glad to hear that Merlin thought his father was a good man. "In the end I guess it does not matter what people think, but what you think," he smiled. It didn't matter if others didn't like his father, as long as Merlin did. He supposed parents who have passed away was also a particularly sore subject for Arthur, which is probably why he wouldn't talk about it much. "It helps to actually get things off my mind - I don't mind people asking questions like that." Elyan smiled warmly at Merlin. "Well, if there's anything else, any secrets or anything you need to get off your chest, don't hesitate to tell me." Elyan knew what it was like to bottle things up, and it did not feel good, because eventually you just explode.

He attempted to concentrate on his cards, which was growing increasingly difficult every time he looked at them. It was as if someone somewhere was mocking him. No matter how much he stared at them though, they weren't exactly going to change. That would be like magic, a thought he'd never dare to say aloud and shouldn't dare to even think. He kept sneaking glances at Gwaine, scanning his face to see if there were any tells that his cards were as bad as Elyan's. He saw nothing, Gwaine seemed perfectly calm with that smug grin of his; something Elyan certainly wasn't. He still attempted to keep some sort of poker face which was slowly falling. At least he didn't bet too much money. That would have been a disaster. So, there's one thing to be a little bit happy about.
His eyes were on Gwaine again when he drank some of his ale and laid down his cards. His eyes darted towards them and he couldn't help but let out a sigh. They were better than his, much better. He looked around the table as the other men began putting down their cards. His face fell as each set cards were if not slightly better than his. He was sure the look on his face was comical, though he had nothing to laugh about. All eyes on him, he sighed out loud. "Great," he grumbled. There was no point putting off the inevitable. He took a larger than necessary swig of ale and reluctantly put his card down on the table. He officially had the worst hand on the table and he wasn't proud of it. Watching the reactions of the people around the table he kept an almost calm looking face with a hint of annoyance. He looked over at Gwaine although he didn't really want to. He didn't want to watch him take the money with that smugness plastered all over his face. He drank a little more ale, thinking this is only round one.

He hoped that since he'd be the uncle to Arthur and Gwen's children, maybe he could give them a nudge towards Caitrin's children. That would be only if they didn't find their way by themselves. How hard could it be to miss red hair? He sincerely hoped that their first meeting wouldn't be as humiliating as their uncle's with Caitrin. He doubted that he could ever forget that he had thought the Lady Caitrin had been a hallucination. He sighed inwardly. “I’m sure seeing them all in the courts will liven the place up a little bit.” He smiled at her. "Oh I don't doubt it," he chuckled. "I'm sure their mother livened up the place too," he said smiling. Before she was married, Caitrin must have worked the courts. If not in Camelot, then in Mercia probably.
Flowers weren't really Elyan's thing. Gwen was always the one that loved flowers. He expected she got that from their mother; she always used to leave flowers around the house when she had been alive. Gwen was so much like their mother, not that she'd really remember of course, but Elyan did and always would. He was glad Gwen now had her own personal supply of the best grown flowers in all of Camelot. She deserved that much of course. “Yes, that sounds perfect.” He smiled at Caitrin and felt glad that he had suggested it. It was a particularly tranquil place, so it would be perfect for a mother with child.
Elyan didn't visit the royal gardens regularly, so he was very relieved that she had decided to lead the way. As they entered the gardens, Elyan couldn't help but smile at the beauty. He didn't even care if that sounded girly anymore because it truly was a wonderful sight. There were so many different types of flowers with names he wouldn't know. But the colour, even in under nothing but the moonlight, was spectacular. Maybe he should visit the gardens more often. He began to walk over to a bench for Caitrin to sit on; she was pregnant after all. He bent down to pick up a single pink rose before offering it to her. "For you, my lady," he said smiling and stepping aside so that she could sit if she wanted to.

Elyan had only become a knight very recently. So when he heard Iwan utter the words seven years as an answer to his previous question, he couldn't help but raise his eyebrows. Seven years. That sounded like an awfully long time. Elyan was still getting to grips with being a knight. It had all happened rather suddenly, and at the time he had expected death to follow on the next day. But against all odds they had prevailed, which had begged the question would Arthur renounce their titles since his father would not approve? The answer had been surprisingly no. Well, it had surprised Elyan, despite the fact that Arthurs father was...unfit. But Elyan hadn't been ignorant to the fact that many nobles; important nobles hadn't approved of Arthur's decision. Yet he stuck with it, which greatly increased Elyan's already high respect for the man.
Elyan could hardly believe that after seven years Sir Iwan still followed all the rules the way he did. He would have thought after that long he wouldn't care that much. It was probably that, which had shocked him most. He might have expected Iwan's behaiviour, the not quite as...thorough, from a new knight who would be wishing to seek aproval and prove himself. But from a knight with the years of experience that Iwan had, well a shock was bound to happen. Despite everything and their less than hopeful start, Elyan's did have to admit he had respect for the man. Seven years and he still acted like a newly recruited knight trying to prove himself. As if, after serving for so long he still had to. Elyan decided he probably shouldn't have given him such a hard time. He did not know him after all, therefore he could not judge him
Iwan repeated his words and Elyan didn't fail to notice the way he had said them. "Quite a long time." He creased his eyebrows and wondered if Iwan regretted being a knight for so long. Maybe it had always been his dream, judging by the way he was so thorough in his job. It hadn't always been Elyan's dream though. He had been a commoner, he could begin to wish for such a thing even if he wanted to. He had been honoured with the knighthood though, and decided to cut the other knight some slack. It would do neither of them any good to have a relatively bad relationship. "Wow." Not the most elequent thing to say. "Do you regret it?" Another question that was probably none of his business, but again he was curious.

"Sir Merlin..." Elyan chuckled and nodded slightly in approval. "It certainly has a ring to it." He couldn't really imagine Merlin as a knight though. Not just because of his different build, but because Elyan had never seen the man kill anyone. It was yet another thing about Merlin that he was curious about. He kept his mouth shut for now though, but the thought was planted into his mind. Elyan continued to laugh as Merlin spoke of how Arthur's socks needed him. "I'm sure it's more than just Arthur's socks that need you," he began. "Other than Gwen," he paused for a moment, "you are his closest advisor." Merlin was Arthur's best friend and everyone saw that. Now that Gwen had been banished, Merlin was left to be Arthur's closest confidante. "Despite the fact that you talk a lot sometimes, you are very capable of wisdom; wisdom that Arthur needs as a new king."
The topic had shifted to fathers. Not only Elyan's, but Merlin's too. He hadn't really meant to ask the way he did; so forward and brash. It had just sort of blurted out with the topic of their conversation now. He didn't want to make Merlin talk about something he didn't want to and he probably shouldn't have asked. He had just been a little too curious, that was all. But it was too late now, the question was out there. It had already left his lips and now, he merely awaited Merlin's response.
When Merlin said that his father had died and he never really knew him, Elyan instantly felt horrible for asking the question. "I'm so sorry Merlin." He knew how painful losing a father was. "But I'm sure he was a good man, like you." He smiled weakly. He felt horrid though, because although he had lost his father, at least he knew him. They may have been at odds with each other more often than Elyan was proud of, but he loved his father with all of his heart and he knew his father loved him, despite everything. Merlin hadn't even gotten to know his father. Hearing that he had died meant that Merlin no longer had the chance too, which Elyan was sure must hurt. Maybe Merlin's pain was stronger than Elyan's then. "I didn't mean to ask the question like that, I shouldn't have." His stupid curiosity was always problematic. It seemed now was no different.

Elyan was relieved that Iwan hadn't taken his forwardness too badly. He certainly hadn't intended to be quite so blunt; it had just come out that way. He had been slightly frustrated with the mini debate that had gone on between the two of them and he expected that was probably what came out in his previous assertive words. Elyan had seen the slight surprise on the other man's face when he had spoken, but thankfully nothing more to show any sort of distress. Quite frankly he had been pretty surprised too; he wasn't usually so brash. But he was usually impatient, which was a trait the new knight wasn't particularly proud of, and knew he probably needed to work on.
He watched the other knight thinking, and waited patiently. He was probably thinking of all the places he was going to show Elyan, which had something to do with knights. Elyan secretly hoped there weren't too many knightly places in Camelot; he had hoped to get back to the castle, at least before sunset. He had some work related to the forge to finish off. Just some paperwork, but he had hoped to be at least a little awake so he could easily calculate the inventory. But he would not to show any distress of course, that would just be impolite. This was all for his benefit after all, and Elyan may be many things but he wasn't outwardly rude. At least not all the time, or he hoped not...
"Is there anything else you wish to ask before we move on?" He knew he probably shouldn't say anything and just move this little tour along. He was the one that wanted to get back early after all. But his curiosity got the better of him, which it usually did, despite all the problems it would land him in. Also, judging by the chance that their relationship would only deteriorate, then this could be his only chance to comfortably ask. "I was wondering, how long have you been a knight?" He didn't mean it offensively or as a way to see how much experience or qualifications he had. He was just genuinely curious.

“I have my methods.” Elyan wasn't very sure what to make of that, but decided to let it go. He didn't think he really wanted to know of these methods anyway. If they both got drunk enough they'd probably forget this whole thing with a banging headache to match anyway, and also forget about all this banter and challenging. Of course Elyan didn't plan on getting too drunk, otherwise he knew he'd get into trouble. Seeing how susceptible he had been to trouble in the past while he was sober, well he didn't even want to think about all he'd done while drunk as well. He'd been told quite a few times what a truly horrible drunk he was, and he wasn't planning on showing that side of him to Gwaine tonight. At least to avoid the large amount of embarrassment that always came to him after his drunken nights out. He always regretted them, but that didn't stop him from coming to the tavern tonight, with the huge risk at hand.
Gwaine seemed confidant and Elyan watched him put a couple of coins down in the middle of the table. Elyan looked down at his cards and carefully tried not to show any sort of emotion that could indicate anything about his cards. They were horrible, truly pointless cards and he knew he'd be an idiot if he didn't fold now. He watched as a couple of the other men around the table put their respective coins down, no too many though, he noticed. Nobody folded, and they all seemed pretty confidant. Elyan didn't want to be the last to make a move though, otherwise that would show uncertainty. He put a couple of coins in the middle of the table, and gave a Gwaine a look which he truly hoped came across as confidant. He knew it was a stupid idea to put the coins down as soon as he did, but he didn't want to appear weak, like he couldn't handle it. He just hoped beyond hope that Gwaine was bluffing and wouldn't call him on his bluff. There was no backing out now.
