Uther knew it was a troubling thing for a young man to accept. It was normal for royalty and nobles to be betrothed, and Arthur should have been by all rights when he was still a lad. He knew that the whole thing wasn't ideal. He wasn't likely the only noble or the only king with illegitimate children in existance, even though that had been before he ever married Ygraine. He just wished Arthur wasn't so rebellious sometimes. Still, he wasn't going as far as he could have. He would have been within his right to disinherit Arthur again, but he couldn't stand a repeat of what had happened while he'd been enchanted.
"It is true that being king, or even future king, brings with it a great deal of responsibility. It is so easy for a leader's actions to help or harm the country he rules. As I said, I want more than anything for you to be happy. But I want what is good for the kingdom as well, and ensuring that good is not always an easy or a happy thing."
"The only thing that brings me happiness is that despite how angry and humiliated Lord Godwin could have gotten, he still chose to praise you, and that aspect of the situation did appear to work out favorably, if not ideally, and I do accept your words of respect. I only hope that his confidence, like the faith I have in you, is well-placed. I can only hope that Camelot's future will not be compromised by this...it would distress me greatly to know you were at fault. I hope that your decision will reveal itself to be a wise one."

this week's Merlin, the boy wizard uncovers dark magic and a murderous plot when Gaius is reunited with his former fiancée Alice. Take a look at our ten cryptic hints below for a taste of what's coming up in 'Love In The Time of Dragons'! If you still want more, be sure to check out our earlier interview with Gaius himself, Richard Wilson, for some more scoop about the ep!
1. An unexpected character makes use of powerful magic.
2. When is a box not a box?
3. A friendship between two characters is tested to its very limit.
4. "Not too bad for a has-been."
5. The poor old librarian is fooled by Merlin once again.
6. Arthur attacks Merlin with a hammer. A very BIG hammer.
7. "Do your suppliers normally **** you?"
8. One character's life hangs in the balance.
9. We discover more about the history of Camelot and the Great Purge.
10. Gaius is not above breaking the laws of the kingdom, or lying to the King.
Review: radiotimes
When people get to a certain age, it's nice for them to have a pet to keep them company. But the creature that Alice, an old flame of Gaius's, has tucked away in a trunk is not as commonplace as a budgie. And it's definitely not a pussycat. Alice's arrival in Camelot turns the old physician into quite a giddy young thing, cooing and smiling and displaying a soppy side to his character that's downright alarming. "Really, Alice, I can't imagine how I managed to do without you," he tells her as she helps him to brew up healing potions in his laboratory. But while Gaius is blinded by love, Merlin's eyes are wide open to Alice's evildoing and he works out that the King must be in danger. As is the loved-up Gaius. All this romance may prove a turn-off for younger viewers, who'd doubtless prefer their Merlin to have a bit more magic, a lot more action and a heck of a lot less talking.

Uther's views about the servants weren't a mystery to anyone. He was more concerned with the nobles, the people of his own class and status, and the servants were just simply there, a part of the background. If they were well behaved, they did as they were told and didn't complain. Uther understood some of the lesser nobles growing attached, most of them only had one or two servants and that was all, but it was more unusual for the prince to grow fond. There were certainly preferred servants for certain tasks and services, but Uther didn't concern himself with who served ho that much with the exception of a few more personal tasks.
"I'm surprised that he's able to do so, considering how inept and bumbling he often is. and how disrespectful he can get at times. I suppose appearances can be quite decieving at times. I won't forbid giving him some small sort of acknowledgement for his actions, considering what the consequences could have been if he hadn't persisted in alerting us."
He listened to what Arthur said about the method of breaking the troll spell, and nodded in agreement. The worst part was that it had been dangerous, Arthur could easily have died in reality.
"It seems you owe your life to your servant...didn't he ultimately use that scarf of his to give you the antidote for the draught? I know I don't recall seeing a bottle anywhere, and he was squeezing something into your mouth. You're fortunate he arrived in time. As I've said before, if anything happened to either you or Morgana, it would be devastating, but you...you are my only son. It would destroy me."
Granted, Arthur wasn't Uther's only child, but that was a secret Uther hoped to take to his grave with him. He would not hesitate to name Morgana his heir if Arthur were lost, but he hoped that need would never arise. Some might criticize him for throwing all his energy into Arthur, some might say Arthur needn't have been born. But Arthur was the only ruler Uther ever wanted to follow him. He loved Morgana dearly, but there was something...something unsettling about her at times, something he couldn't quite peg. He doubted she'd ever attempt to harm him, but she had inherited his fierce temper and stubbornness, and he sometimes thought she was even more stong willed than he himself was. There was simply something he didn't like, aside from the scandal of her illegitimacy, about the idea of her becoming queen.
"I doubt he would have been...and I shudder even more at the thought of having shown her to Cenred. He's always looking for an excuse to make war against us, and this would have spurred him to attack, I'm certain of it. Of course, our allies would not have been amused, either. I'm glad I never had to explain Catrina to Lord Godwin." Uther hoped to one day soon secure Arthur and Princess Elena in marriage, and she would have been mortified at the idea of a troll mother-in-law.
"Come to think of it, I do recall some of the expressions. Others I wish to forget...it had to have been downright distressing when I was kissing her...it..."
Still, Uther was most repulsed at the knowledge that he'd been intimate with it, much as he once was with Ygraine. He hid his inner turmoil and distress well, not only about that, but about what had already been discussed, the very idea that he'd been seduced, enspelled and taken advantage of through his heart.

Uther watched as Arthur got the guards to leave, telling them a story about him being gone somewhere. Uther did relax a little, because it was hard not to be afraid of the sharp weapons they were holding. He was truly a person torn between the adult trapped inside him and the child whose nature was overriding him at the moment. He wanted to be strong, to show that he wasn't afraid, as it was how he had always been, even as a boy. But kids were always more easily frightened by nature, because they were smaller and not as able to fight back.
He kept looking up at Arthur, but the prince looked just as shocked and confused as he felt himself. His expression was one of pleading for help, and growing frustration at feeling so helpless himself. He kept his head high, but he was having a hard time not shaking somewhat. He just wished he knew a way to get this fixed before something really bad happened.
"Yes...What's wrong? I know it's magic, but how do you fix it? I want it fixed!"

Uther did listen, his thoughts still going a number of directions. He was not without a heart. He was not unable to understand the need for love and the desires of a young heart. He had once been like Arthur, had once wanted badly to be with the woman he loved. He was fortunate, though, that Ygraine was both his only love and an acceptable choice to be his queen. He naturally wanted happiness and love for Arthur, but he knew that sometimes, it could not happen. Sometimes, the good of the kingdom had to come first.
" I do understand your feelings. I was fortunate to love a woman who was also an excellent choice to become queen. And I do hope that you can be happy when you are king. But, both of you will be sorry if this action brings harm to both kingdoms. I can only hope that does not happen. But it is not only the potential alliance being damaged that angers me. It is your daring to publicly defy your king and father, in front of the entire court, as well as Godwin and his delegation.! It would have been bad enough if you had done this privately, but you chose to make it public. I am very disappointed and highly embarrased."

From Merlin's Keep. They must have JUST gone up.
>Episode 10 Spoilers
* This is the episode with the Old Merlin. * Old Merlin is portrayed by Colin Morgan and wears one of Gaius’s red robes.
Episode 12 Spoilers
* Guest stars include Eoin Macken as Gwaine, Emilia Fox as Morgause and Michael Cronin as Geoffrey of Monmouth. * Geoffrey of Monmouth presides over Morgana’s coronation. * Men dressed like the mercenaries from the first two episodes this season are in the great hall during the coronation. * At some point a saddened Uther is brought into the great hall and forced to appear before the sisters. * Morgana’s choice of outfit at her coronation is the costume some fans refer to as the white mermaid dress. * Morgause wears a robe over her red dress. * Black banners with a red tree are displayed in the great hall. * As Geoffrey places a crown on Morgana’s head, Morgause holds Uther’s crown in her hands. * Morgana takes a seat on the middle throne in the great hall. * Merlin, Arthur and Gwaine are horrified by something they see in the woods. * Morgana’s coronation was filmed on September 13 and the scene with the boys in the woods on September 14.
Episode 12 Speculation
In The Crystal Cave, during the glimpse of the future, Gwen is seen standing near Morgana who is wearing a crown suggesting she’s already been crowned queen of Camelot. Gwen doesn’t seem to be at Morgana’s coronation in Episode 12, unless she doesn’t attend or is hidden from camera view. If it turns out Gwen isn’t in Camelot at that point, was the vision from the cave filmed just for The Crystal Cave and not actually from the last episodes? Since all signs point towards Gwen discovering Morgana is a traitor in The Eye of the Phoenix, unless she’s being held there against her will, why would she stay in Camelot if the others are on the run? We just hope, whenever she discovers Morgana’s new nature, Gwen is written to have some emotional turmoil over the fact she’s turned traitor. Considering they were friends for many years, it would be a horrible move on the part of the series to show us Gwen going from aware that Morgana is acting strangely, yet still caring about her a great deal, to so suddenly joining Gaius’s Morgana is Evil and Good for Nothing Fanclub. We really hope that Arthur and Uther aren’t the only ones written to have some emotional turmoil when the truth about Morgana is revealed. Gwen having some emotional turmoil about it is a must. And we doubt we’ll be the only upset fangirls if the emotional turmoil over Morgana’s betrayal turns into a boy’s only club.
Unless the series pulls some kind of huge shocker, which in this case seems unlikely, it’s safe to assume Morgause is not pregnant and the robe is doing the best job a robe can to hide it.
Are the men at the coronation Cenred’s mercenaries? Or have Morgause and Morgana hired some mercenaries from the same stock?
Is the red tree the symbol of the Bloodguard or House of Gorlois?
Episode 13
* Guest stars include Santiago Cabrera as Lancelot, Eoin Macken as Gwaine, Rupert Young as Sir Leon, Tom Hopper as Percival, Adetomiwa Edun as Elyan and Emilia Fox as Morgause. * Percival is ripped. * The Roundtable will appear. There is a chalice on it in front of Merlin who is standing next to Arthur and Gwen. * Arthur and his loyalists take refuge at what look to be ruins. The loyalists are Merlin, Gwen, Gaius, Gwaine, Lancelot, Elyan, Sir Leon and Percival. * Elyan can’t decide if he’s a sword-man or an ax-man. * Gwen is accompanied by Sir Leon, Lancelot, Elyan, Percival and Gwaine. They are all riding horses and the guys are dressed as knights, complete with red capes, while Gwen’s wearing her costume from The Castle of Fyrien. Arthur who is not dressed up like a knight is waiting for Gwen. * Arthur gives Gwen a kiss in the courtyard at Camelot while Lancelot, Sir Leon, Elyan, Gwaine, Percival and a stable boy look on. * Some scenes were filmed at the studio in Cardiff on August 25, 2010 and others at another location on August 31, 2010.
I still want to know if they'll leave us with Morgana still queenly or end the season with Camelot being retaken. I HATE cliffies lol

Uther was indeed trailing behind him, a number of thoughts racing through his mind at once. He had expected Arthur to fight him on marrying Elena. He knew that the prince wouldn't easily submit to marrying her. But it was not like this was uncommon. Nobles were usually betrothed as young children, and they went along with what was decided even if they didn't like it. This had been a much-anticipated chance for Camelot to form a powerful alliance that would benefit both kingdoms. And Arthur had just ruined it.
"Arthur! What are you thinking? How dare you disobey me in this way! You have ruined an alliance that would have benefited this kingdom greatly! I don't think you know what you've done. I understand the desire for love, but a man in a position such as yours must put the good of the kingdom first. Must do what is best, regardless of personal feelings.!"

Uther replied with a chuckle. It was not unlike his son to rib him about his skill or say that he was getting old. It reminded him of the other conversation, about his footwork. His body might be aging, but he was still at least somewhat able, and could more than hold his own in a lot of pursuits. He enjoyed the chance to show that he was still strong and capable, and would have readily joined in on some of the tourney events except for the fact that he'd probably have people letting him win because of who he was. Plus, he was expected to be in his place in the box, observing the events from the stands. He took the ribbing from Arthur good naturedly, and knew he could return some of his own.
"I might still well surprise you. My years may be increasing, but I am not completely incapacitated yet. Besides, you are not without your own challenges. I've often heard you complain about your servant and all the noise he makes. He'll give you a challenge, I fear. We shall see who comes out ahead in the end."

It did please the king that Arthur seemed to have learned a lot from this experience. It had all been extremely lucky the way things had resolved, and it frightened Uther a bit how easily things could have gone differently, how one wrong decision, one foolish or impulsive move, could destroy or save a kingdom. He sincerely hoped Arthur had learned enough from this to wake him up and keep anything from happening in the future. Uther had someone in mind for Arthur's bride, but he was still in the process of arranging Lord Godwin's visit here to set it up.
"I fear how we are seen by the other kingdoms, how badly our reputation has been tarnished. I hope not too greatly, since the treaty was still salvaged, but I don't like it even so. Thus far, I like what I have heard, I hope that you will not forget the lessons of this incident. I do hope it will ultimately be as you say. But to ensure that the lesson is learned, I think a day or two in the dungeons will suffice."
(ooc did you still want the stocks? I can change it.)

"Morgause. I always thought she was dead, but she wasn't. She made you almost kill me. I don't like her."came the reply. He did have a memory of the fight with Arthur and the other boy, Merlin, stopping Arthur before he could do any harm. Uther knew that Morgause knew things that Arthur couldn't know, and he hadn't liked it. "And If you check the bed, it will be empty. No one's there because I'm here."
The king's guards had arrived now, and were concerned themselves. "We aren't sure where the king has gone, sire, but his room is empty. We saw the boy run out and we've searched thoroughly, but your father is simply gone. We don't know anything about the boy. What would you have us do?"
"I'm him. I'm Uther. Somebody has to fix the magic to make me better."the boy-Uther said to them.

Uther thought hard, trying to bring back some of the important things, the things that would make Arthur believe him. It wasn't easy, becuase although everything was still there, the magic was suppressing a lot of things and messing up others, and it was probably also the age he was now. Kids never think very easily, and some of it winds up being imaginary. But still, some things were definately there.
"I remember you, and Morgana...and Ygraine...and I remember the troll. She made me want to marry her, but she was stinky. I know...I know about...how somebody made me see scary things, things that weren't there. My head hurt and I didn't know what was real. It was scary because another king was trying to take us over. A lot of things are messed up, but I remember some. The fights are scary. Even if people have to die for what's right."

Uther was intimidated by the guards, and by Arthur's tone of voice. The prince was angry, and yelling, both at him and the other men. He tried to organize his thoughts, but it wasn't easy the way his mind was now, the age his brain had regressed to. He wanted to run, wanted to hide. A distant part of him was angry at his reaction, but whatever spark of adult Uther was still there was overpowered by the child's natural reactions.
He tripped again on the big night clothes, and got even unhappier. Maybe Arthur would understand better if he told him more, he thought. Arthur didn't know who he was, because he wasn't grown-up anymore. He looked strange to the prince as a boy. He stood up, calling out in a voice that had a mixture of both fear and the natural strong willed, stubbornness that Uther had possessed even as a boy.
"Uther. My name is Uther. I shouldn't be this way. I should be grown up. I don't want to be this way. Help me!

"I'm a bit surprised...the boy seems so...mentally afflicted...at times." Uther replied. "At least he had some small shred of intelligence, enough to discover what was going on.
Uther was only partially surprised at Arthur's words. He had been harsh, had probably given Arthur reason to think he didn't care anymore. That part of the whole thing still haunted him, even though it was all rectified now."I still did not want to see you die. I still cared for you. I only regret that it happened in the first place, that I was made to believe you were not fit to one day be king. I believe you do have the makings of a good king. Nothing could be further from the truth."
Uther could only nod as Arthur spoke about the smell. It had been blatantly obvious at the end, after the enchantment had been broken. He felt a shiver as he imagined the shame and humiliation the whole thing would have caused if disaster had not been averted and Bayard had come."Yes, I quite agree. I am only glad that we were saved such a humiliating experience."

Uther was down, but he was still fighting like an angry wolverine, not giving up. He struggled with the sword, but he was kicked backward and then it was pulled away from him as the man picked it up. He braced, certain that he was now to die here. He thought of Arthur and hoped he would be the king he had the potential to be.
But there was no pain, no slice of steel through his flesh. He saw one of the men reach toward him and take his crown. kicked and punched, rolling and struggling against the hands pulling at his head, but the man stepped clear after pulling the crown from his head. Uther got to his feet, crouching in a fighting stance, but he did not immediately lunge, that would be foolish.
His head still throbbed, and it only made him more annoyed as he studied Alistair's movements. He knew that he was quickly running out of options, that it was not going to be easy. He drew his secondary weapon, his dagger, knowing that it would be difficult to use against a sword blade, but still watching, looking for any chance to strike either man with it. At the same time, he knew that the moment he struck at one man, he would likely be struck by the other. Still, better to die fighting than a coward, on his knees.

He awoke disoriented, unsure of where he was or what was going on. There were memories in his mind, so many, bits and pieces, but it was hard to make sense of them all. Many of them were strange and terrifying to the person he was now, the sights and sounds of past battles and executions. He knew his name, that he was Uther, and that he was king. But so much of the rest was confusing.
His body was small and delicate, the soft, adorable face and still-stubby limbs of youth replacing the muscular, sturdy body of the adult male. His hair was thick and dark, his eyes still their intense hazel. He was dwarfed by the grand, ornate bed and nearly invisble under the adult's clothes that no longer fit. When he climbed from the bed and dropped down onto the floor, he stood only three feet, give or take a few inches.
He remembered Arthur...Arthur could help him. Or Morgana. He had to find one of them. He couldn't open the heavy doors of the bedchamber, though, until one of the guards pulled it open to see what was making the sound on the other side. He ran, skidding, frightened of the imposing men with spears and swords. One part of him knew they were his guards, but the child's brain still feared them.
The castle was so big and so disorienting, and he had trouble finding his way around. Plus, he struggled not to get tangled in the long sleep robe he'd been wearing, not wanting to run naked, even though he was becoming frustrated as he repeatedly tripped on the long fabric. He eventually found Arthur's room, its door striking a chord in his jumbled memories. He called out, hoping the boy would hear and open the door as he pushed against it.
"Arthur! Arthur...help...I'm scared. I don't know what's wrong..."

And now for something completely different....I've a feeling it's not *quite* what you meant, but I think it's an interesting take on the idea.
"I know that you will be a great king...a king that will make Camelot greater than it has ever been..."
"Yes, father..."
Uther's hand relased its hold on Arthur's, his body going slack chest falling still as the life drained from it. The old king had been poisoned by a group of rebels, and there had been nothing Gaius or even Merlin could do to help him. Arthur's time had finally come, and the bells began to toll outside, sounding the message to the people. ---------- Sometime during the 1950s
A loud cry sounded through the delivery room as the newborn's lungs found their footing and announced his arrival. His eyes were blue now, as all newborns' are, but they would soon turn hazel. Barely noticed at the moment was a prominent crease on his forehead, beginning at the right corner of his hairline and trailing down to the corner of his right eye.
"You have a son...a strong, healthy son" the doctor announced. "Have you chosen a name?"
"Rupert" his mother answered with a tired but happy smile. "Rupert Giles."
Years later, Rupert would spend many mornings pondering the vivid dreams that often filld his mind in the night, dreams of the clang of blades, the pounding of horses' hooves, and the magnificent castle where he sat upon a velvet throne in a realm now consigned to the domain of myth and fiction. He knew little of his previous existance, only that the life he lived now was far different, far removed from that time so many centuries ago.
He would see the evil of magic, yes, but he would also see its power for good, its use as a tool, reflected in the faces of the young people who came to be as his family, in particular a young, red-haired witch and a strong willed blonde, the most remarkable slayer to have ever lived.

Uther had been made aware of the incident, and had been displeased by it. The girl was so young, only 10, and her parents, a lord and lady, had been viciously attacked and killed by despicable bandits. Uther would of course see to it that the bandits were hunted down and executed if possible. It was really a strange dichotomy. Some children were deserving of pity and protection, while others, like the druid boy, were dangerous even at their young age and had to be dealt with. Uther never took pleasure in ordering the deaths of the very young, but it was an unfortunate necessity in some cases.
This girl, however, was an innocent victim herself, alone and without anyone to look after her now. She was being cared for by a family friend, and so she wasn't entirely on her own, but Uther's hardened heart did feel a bit of sympathy for her. And he knew that Morgana would probably take a great liking to her during her stay in the city, the girl's experience very close to her own.
He entered into the room, taking in the girl and her attendant, and he could see that she was a noblewoman through and through. Even as young as she was, she was fitting into the part perfectly, another reminder of young Morgana when he had first brought her home. The least he could do was offer her a place to stay and see that she was well looked after. The marks of her experience were obvious, and she was keeping a strong attitude through it all.
"Welcome to Camelot." the king said, his voice formal, yet still carrying a tone that he hoped wouldn't intimdate her too much.
"I want to express my deep sorrow for your loss. Although I can only take action inside the borders of Camelot, I want to assure you that if the men who did this set foot in Camelot, I will see to it that they are brought to justice, Lady Arianna. I will see to it that you are well looked after here in Camelot, and that you do not want for anything. You are welcome to spend a few nights here, of course, until a suitable home is found. I will assign a maid to attend to you."

Day Four, Morning
The festival had been going quite well thus far, and although things had not been completely smooth, few events ever were, everyone seemed relatively at ease, enjoying themselves. There were some problems with thieves making their presence known, and there had been a few arrests, but thus far, nothing major had occured.
This was the fourth day of the festival, and Uther had anticipated the hunting contest being one of the events that would be highly competitive among the nobles and knights, most of them eager to show their superiority and adeptness. This was one of the rare times commoners were allowed to hunt as well, and there was a bit of discontent about it from time to time.
It was expected that the king and prince would take part in the event, and Uther could detect a bit of friendly competitiveness in Arthur, something he'd fully expected. Of course, with that clumsy boy Merlin stumbling about and making such a racket, if Arthur's frequent complaints were true, the prince would be lucky to catch anything. Uther was certain this would prove to be an interesting day.
