Uther had his suspicions, really, recalling Alenid yelling at Trickler before making him walk all the way home, but he had no proof and no desire to destroy the entire peace process by accusing him of causing trouble. It was not easy to tell if it was magic or just the unthinking mistake of a young man struggling with normal adult desires. Olaf wouldn't have cared either way anyway, and would have still tried to start a war with Uther.
"I am pleased that you say that, I only hope that you mean it this time, given the fact that you have done it repeatedly. It is not easy to trust you after two such incidences. That is why I am inclined to order punishment this time, at least mild form of one. Nothing severe, because it did work out well, and Olaf did leave on fair terms, at least for him. He is never fully content with a situation. And also, you acted wisely during the duel, and for that I am pleased with you. "
The king was quiet for a moment, considering.[ He couldn't afford leniency with Arthur, he had to be stern, but at the same time, Arthur had managed to recitfy the situation quite well. He waited for Arthur to speak again, his face telling the prince that he was considering everything as they talked.

"Yes, yes, I quite agree. It simply made the creature all the more reprehensible and cruel. It makes me feel all the more revolted at the thought. It is the way of all magical creatures, and magic users. They know only evil and they desire only to twist men's minds and make them suffer. That is why they must be stopped. We are extremely fortunate that the deception was discovered."
"I only wish that the only method of ending it had not been what it was. Seeing you seemingly dead was nearly too much for me to bear, especially after already nearly losing you once before. As I've said, I would be crushed beyond hope if anything happened to either you or Morgana. Being king, being wealthy...it all means nothing if what is truly of importance to me is lost. And she...it caused me to turn against you in that way. It disgusts me."
"As for the smell, I believe the enchantment had something to do with it, suppressed it somehow. I really don't recall there being a great deal of odor. It would almost have to, really, because it's revolting enough to make one ill."

Gorlois-"Close friend,Uther made him a promise about Morgana-but she's really Uther's"
Dragon-"wants revenge after being imprisoned by Uther"

teasers for tomorrow. I think we'll learn a big thing about Uther and Morgana
This week on Merlin, the boy wizard stumbles across the Crystal Cave and has a terrifying vision of the future. It seems that Morgana is stepping up her campaign to bring down Uther and only Merlin can stop her! There's also a few shocking revelations, as we discover that one character has been lying for a very long time. Check our our ten hints below at what's coming up!
1. Merlin and Arthur visit the Valley of the Fallen Kings.
2. Merlin gives Arthur advice on women.
3. There's a bit of a Snow White moment involving Morgana's mirror.
4. Morgause returns, and it seems she might be having a bit of trouble controlling Morgana.
5. "To ****** the ****** is no simple matter, Merlin. To do so is fraught with danger."
6. Flaming torches cause quite a bit of trouble.
7. A desperate Uther is forced to break his own rules.
8. The great dragon returns, and this time he is not at all pleased with Merlin.
9. At least three characters come within inches of death. . 10. "There's something you should know. Something I've told no-one. ******* ** ** ********."

"As I said, sire, I will have to do some research, but I do have suspicions. The onset seemed quite sudden, and he doesn't appear to have suffered any sort of head injury."
There was no evidence of any physical injury to Uther's head, no bruised or bloodied areas, and Arthur certainly would have mentioned such an injury, if Uther had not requested his services himself.Stubborn as he was, Uther would not likely try to ignore something that could endanger the entire kingdom if it were left untreated.
"I fear that someone is using magic against him somehow. I am going to investigate both physical and mystical possibilities until I'm certain, but it is definately a possibility. There are illnesses of the mind that can certainly cause such delusions, but they don't usually have such a sudden and severe onset, and he has no evidence of any blows to the head. But, there are any number of plants, magical objects, spells...that is what will be the difficult part, but hopefully I can narrow it down. I do not intend to stop until I find something, sire, because the alternative is unthinkable."
The physician was well aware of what would happen if Uther remained ill, and word got out that Camelot's king was incapacitated. Arthur was a capable warrior, but he was young and inexperienced when it came to actually running a kingdom, and Gaius didn't know if he was capable of fending off an enemy invasion all on his own. Camelot could well be destroyed.
Uther himself was marginally aware as the potion was brought to his lips and he was coaxed into swallowing it. It didn't taste all that wonderful, but it did soon bring him into a more restful sleep state. There could be no defense against any nightmares the mandrake might induce, but at least for a while, Uther's mind would hopefully be soothed. He hadn't fought the sleep much when it had come, had welcomed its relief.

oooh good one for Uther. Or it sounds that way, I've never heard it.
Arthur-Uther "Shadow of Uther"
Arthur-"Once and Future King" (both of those two are by Kamelot)
My songs tend to be more obscure. I think one good one for Uther would be "Dust in the Wind" by Kansas,(ok that one isn't obscure) and Nowhere to Go, by Bryan Adams.
For Merlin, "Endless Night" and "He Lives in You" from Lion King Broadway and the Balto theme "Reach For the Light"
Morgana-Uther Who Am I (Tarzan 2) Be Prepared (Lion King)
Arthur->Merlin My Funny Friend and Me-Sting Will You Be There-Michael Jackson
Merlin-Arthur You've Got a Friend in Me Candle on the Water (Pete's Dragon) (Reach Out)I'll Be There I'll Be There For You (Friends) well sort of
I also found myself thinking of Merlin with a couple of the Mulan songs but not quite enough 'cause it's from a girl POV lol

"That is one thing that was commendable out of all this, your desire to try and preserve the peace" agreed Uther.
"I cannot help wondering if it was, perhaps, magic that affected your mind, but I know as well how the minds of young men can be, and I know what you have attemped before, when you asked to marry that girl Sophia. You very nearly got yourself killed that time, as I recall. Sometimes, I honestly do not know how you have managed to keep your head on your shoulders this long" he said with a sigh.
"I am relieved that it did not disrupt the peace treaty, but you are very lucky that it did not. That was something Camelot could NOT afford to have fail, and if it had, the resulting wars would have been your fault. Even so, the gossip has already started making its way around the castle and the kingdom, and will likely do so for some time. I obviously take no pleasure in hearing such things being said about you. I only hope that word does not reach Olaf's kingdom as well, as it will damage Camelot's reputation as a kingdom. That is what you must remember, that you, as prince, represent the entire kingdom, and your actions reflect on it, whether positive or negative."
"I am still inclined to order you punished somehow. Maybe some time in the stocks would give you some time to think" the king scowled

Gaius did as Arthur asked, going around to Uther's other side and helping Arthur get him up. He didn't like what the evidence before him was indicating. Mental afflictions were always harder to treat or even diagnose a cause for than physical injuries. And the human mind had long been mysterious to most physicians through history. He could do something to relieve the king's suffering, but he hoped that it would not end there. Camelot would be ripe for the conquering with only Arthur, promising as he was, caring for it.
He studied Uther, and also spoke to him, despite not knowing if he could hear.
"Sire, we're going to help you to bed. Can you hear us at all?"
He got no response, though, from the king.
"There could be a number of causes for something like this...I will give him something to calm him, and I'll work as quickly as possible to try and find out what's wrong, but mental afflictions are always more difficult to diagnose and treat than physical ones. Especially given that it could be either physical or mystical. You said that he has been seeing images, and that he spoke of your mother...can you think of anything else unusual that you've noticed?"
Uther barely responded and did not seem to notice much of what was going on as he was put on the bed. He was still looking around, rambling, crying out every now and then. He curled up on the bed, much as he had when he lay on the floor a few moments ago.
Gaius did not find anything physically wrong as he examined Uther more closely, so he knew that he was going to have to consult his books, determine if anything matched what Uther was experiencing. He got to work with some of the things he'd brought, mixing something to at least give the king some rest while he tried to find a cure. He turned to Arthur for help.
"Sire,Help me get him to drink this, it will calm him and hopefully make him sleep, at least for a while. It is the best I can do until I find out what's causing this."

Uther didn't resist Afthur's efforts, even though he didn't offer a great deal of response, either. He was simply too out of it at the moment to fully differentiate reality from his delusions. He heard the voice as though from a distance, soft, struggling to break through the delirium. He tried to focus on the voice, like a beacon, but his distraught mind wouldn't let him fully believe that what he was seeing was truly Arthur.
One of the servants had gone to tell Gaius what was going on, and the physician was there now, just outside the door, but hesitated to enter without permission from Arthur. It wasn't entirely clear what was wrong with the king, but Uther was obviously suffering. Gaius simply refused to let himself think the worst, knowing what the consequences would be. He rapped on the doorframe as Uther was letting himself be helped to his feet.
"Sire? I should tend to him...with your permission, of course."

Arthur wasn't aware though of just who was standing at the door. Uther had often wondered about these two, and he still wondered what exactly they'd been doing. As Prince, it was within Arthur's right to tend to certain needs if he desired-he was a young man, and although no one knew what hormones were at this time, it was still known that men would be men. Even Uther was not averse to requiring help from one or another of the servant girls from time to time-but he wondered sometimes if this might be more. At the moment, though, he had no proof of anything. He was going to watch them, but he chose not to accuse of that right now, with other things on his mind.
Uther was well aware of the need for political alliances, and it was true that Lady Vivan was a noble, and techincally fair game for Arthur. But although he would love to make an alliance with a king like Olaf, there was no way Olaf would ever agree to it. Arthur must have realized that. He looked at them with his typical fury in his eyes, his facial expression clearly one of anger.
"Arthur, what were you thinking? Certainly you must be aware of Olaf's reputation, that making any advances on Vivian would be suicide. I know that you are a young man, and that you have certain feelings, but you nearly got yourself killed!

"I tire of being tormented! I will not stop until they are destroyed!" the king snapped.
He tried to force himself to believe Arthur was real-the specters had not taken the form of the living as yet, only of the dead. He tried to fix himself on his son, hoping against hope that it...he...was one gleaming reality in the midst of so much confusion. He still muttered softly, Ygraine's name occasionally being heard among the ramblings. He moved forward, still clutching the blade in his hand, trying to get around Arthur.
"Move aside, Arthur, I must destroy them. I must find a way to make them stop!" he said. "You must see them...I am NOT mad! They are clear....THERE!
His eyes went wide again and he did drop the sword, screaming at the dripping apparition in front of him. he was panting heavily, "No...please no...Ygraine..."
He cried out, shrill screams of unsuppressable terror, stumbling backward, unware of whether he was crashing into Arthur or not. and then he was on the ground, beyond response, beyond communication. The rambling and muttering continued, but the world around him was shut off, his mind trying to escape the horror being foisted on it.

"I am not naive"Uther replied.I am well aware of how many would be quite pleased to see me dead. I do only what is necessary to protect Camelot, but there are many who fail to see that. Who would readily exact their revenge given the change."
Uther had been glancing between the two men, but it was impossible to keep track of the actions of both of them at once, and it did not take much thought to see that Uther was at a disadvantage. He had concerned himself with the bowman, and was caught by the rock when his eyes were off of the other man. He wasn't able to dodge the throw in time, and the stone hit home.
The impact of the projectile was softened by his chain mail, always present when he went out anywhere. But the impact was still enough to knock him to his knees and leave him temporarily stunned by the blow. Still, one hand held tightly to his sword, even though he was not going to be quick to raise it if it were needed.

Uther was still too defiant to consider listening to their requests. He did not want to die, but he refused to entertain the idea of submission either. He would fight until the end, and would rather die with honor than give in. It was true that it was common for nobles to be taken and held for ransom, but Uther knew that his enemies did not have such plans in mind. They would likely kill him, seeking revenge for past actions against a friend or relative. He watched, studying for a moment, then curled his lips back in a snarl.
"If I die, I die with honor" he growled. "I will not submit and be seen a coward, knowing I will likely die as one at your hands. I will fight to my last breath."
Uther did not make an immediate move. He watched the archer for his move instead, hoping he could have a chance at dodging the arrow, or at least any fatal wound. If he charged blindly, he would die without question.

Uther lay restless in his bed after Gaius and the servants had brought him there from where he'd been found, crying out and trembling, eyes wide with unseeing fear. Over and over he was bombarded, figures and ghosts haunting him, some entitiy obviously having seen fit to torment him with visions of past victims.
He saw young children, drowned in years past because they had been magic users, and other victims who burned, or were beheaded. They did not speak, just stood, tormenting him with their presence. He could not understand, though, the vision of Ygraine. Was he truly guilty of killing her by going to Nimueh even though it was risky? He could not have known she would be the price! And yet she stood, dry once, then wet, taunting and bombarding him to the point that he was senseless.
The images manifested again, several of them this time. Uther lunged blindly from the bed, screaming and lashing out. "WHO ARE YOU? GO AWAY FROM ME! LEAVE ME IN PEACE!" Uther crashed about the room blindly, furniture and decorations clattering and crashing and sometimes breaking as he blindly lashed out, desperate to stop the visions that were seen only to him, continuing to scream as he did so. He could not see the hanging root beneath his bed, the source of all his anguish and pain.
Servants were there now, trying to get him back to his bed. But he had reached his sword now. He could not get his legs under him, was too badly shaken to stand, but he crouched near a wall, slashing and yelling at anyone brave or foolish enough to come near to him. The servants could not get close without being harmed."I WILL DESTROY YOU! YOU WILL TORTURE ME NO LONGER!Reality and fantasy were blended in his mind, the boundry between long ago broken down. He would have to be helped soon, or he would become a complete madman, unable to rule and leaving Arthur to rule in his stead. Camelot would be vulnerable to attack.

Uther knew that he was outnumbered, but he'd rather fight back than surrender, even if he died trying. He still had his sword pointed back, and was not about to drop it at this moment. He stepped back, scanning for openings in the heavy brush. A horse wouldn' fit, but hopefully his body could. He knew that there was always a chance of magic being used, which would leave him at a disadvantage, but they hadn't used it yet. He glared at them with anger in his eyes, a firm defiance that said he wasn't playing games.
"You must be daft. I will take no orders from anyone! Anything that is done to me will have to be done with force, or by reason of my death. If you are not cowards, get down off of your mounts and fight me. That is my answer."
