Arthur was not in the best of moods. He had gone on a perilous journey only to have his efforts crushed . . . literally, by his father who destroyed the flower. He had managed to give it to Guinevère, or what remained of it, and hoped it was enough to save the servant. He heard that Merlin was recovering, but still! Arthur could not believe his father locked him in the dungeon! Still, he did not regret his actions of defiance towards him for he believed he had done the right thing. Merlin risked his life for Arthur, and he had to do the same for him.
Thankfully, one of the guards had snuck Arthur out of the dungeons. He had to swear to keep the knight's identity a secret for if his father found out . . . there would be a lot of problems. With that being said, Arthur could not stay in the castle for that time. Instead, he spent all night wandering around the city . . . not able to sleep as it would not look good for the prince of Camelot to be curled up on the street, sleeping like a beggar. No. Instead, he used the excuse that he was patrolling, making sure that the streets were safe. He had a sword with him, and it made this small fib more believable.
Along with the lack of any sleep, came impatience and frustration. He was not in a good mood at all. It was nearing sunrise, and Arthur had to wait about one more hour before returning to the castle . . . for his father had ordered his release first thing in the morning so he could pretend like he had been in the dungeon all night. But Arthur was getting restless. He was tired, hungry, cranky, and annoyed. He was counting down the minutes . . . the seconds even! As he walked, doing his best not to stumble.
On top of everything else . . . he had ripped his shirt, and had to spend countless minutes with a seamstress to get it mended. He was exhausted! He needed sleep, but more importantly, he needed to stay out of sight because there were guards on duty wandering around. The nearest spot he found that offered concealment was Tom the blacksmith's shop. He had been once before to question the man, but he had never actually been inside . . . until tonight. He looked around, waiting a few moments before assured that no one was inside. Of course the door was locked, so he did the next logical thing: climbed through the window. He managed to do so, praying that he would not rip his pants since his shirt had already fallen victim to a passing piece of wood. He stumbled inside the window, and quickly regained his balance, looking around at the small, and abandoned store . . . which was a perfect place for him to spend the next couple hours.
Setting: Tom the blacksmiths shop Time of Day: Early Morning, around 4:00 am Timeline: Early season 1, shortly after The Poisoned Chalice Tag: Guinevère

Guinevère woke up very early. She made her father a quick meal, so that he would not be hungry when he awoke and then hurried out the door. She was going to check on Merlin again before beginning her day's work. Guinevère had been shocked for the past few days turn about. One of which was Prince Arthur. If one had asked her a few weeks ago if he would risk his life, and even defie his father over his servant Guinevère would have said not the bully prince. However Arthur had done so. Merlin would live!
Guinevère tucked her cloak around her as she started for the castle to ward off the cool morning air, and looked around her. She not afraid to be walking around in the dark but she knew better then to risk it. What saw when she looked however wasn't what she was used to. Feet were disappearing into her father's shop!! Guinevère's mouth fell open and she turned to look for the King's men. When she found one she called out to him. "Help me! There is a thief in my father's shop!" She pointed to the building, "I just saw them going in the window!" She waited while he gathered the other three men and all of them hurried over the the building with Guinevère very close behind them.

Bloody Hell! He recognized Guinevère's voice . . . that and she said 'her father's shop'. His frustration only grew even more. His already horrible mood was just increasing. He could not fight the men! He wanted no one to know he was here, and he didn't want anyone to see their king so . . . disheveled. Arthur ducked, quickly hiding behind the door so that when they opened it, he would hopefully remain hidden. When he heard them enter, he held his breath, not moving a muscle, remaining completely still.
While his men did not see him, unfortunately, Guinevère did. He made direct eye contact with her. Damn it! He raised a finger to his lips, indicating to her not to say a word about his presence here. He had no idea whether she would listen or not. He barley spoke to her, so he was not sure whether she would support the king's decision to keep him in prison, or if she would cover for him when he escaped. It was the moment of truth, and all he could do was hope that she would help him.

Guinevère entered the shop behind the knights and then pressed her back tot he wall by the door to stay out of the way. That was the only reason she saw the prince. Even from where she was, only a few feet away it took her a moment to see him. She stared at him a moment before looking back to the men and speaking. "Perhaps he heard me yell for help and ran away?" She took a half step away from the wall so her cloak hid most of the prince. (He was tall or it would have hid all of him).
The knight gave her a look, annoyed and told her that they did not need a woman to tell them how to do the job. Guinevère waited while they looked around the place and then claimed the thief had gone out the back and they would hang around near by just in case. She waited as they walked out, before shutting the door, and then the window as well.
Turning to face the prince she dipped her head in a bow and spoke, "Forgive me, sire, I would not have called them if I had known you were the one breaking in."

He held his breath, waiting for her reaction . . . . . . . and . . . . . exhale! Thank goodness! She was covering for him. Actually, not only that, but she was also helping him. He wanted to beat his men so that they would get out of here -- that was the kind of mood he was in. He wanted to smack each one for . . . what? Doing their job? Yes. That was it. He just wanted them to get out already! He expected Guinevère to follow them out, but she had stayed behind, closing the door behind them. He was relieved when they walked out, but knew he was not in the clear for they would continue searching until they were certain.
He brushed himself off, as Guinevère addressed him. He was far from presentable! He needed a hot bath, clean clothes, a large plate of food, and his warm luxurious bed! I was not breaking in!" He argued defensively . . . even if that was what he had technically done. A prince does not break in! It sounded so . . . so . . . criminal like. "You know you should really make sure the windows are more secure. It is rather easy to get inside your father's shop," he informed her, while walking around, but still with caution.

Guinevère was very unsure what to do. She watched him for a moment before dropping in to a bow. "You were not breaking in? Only entering with out keys or permission?" She asked and then realized what she was saying and to WHO she was saying it to. "If I have known who you were, sire, I would not have drawn attention to you. All I had seen were a pair of boots disappearing into my father's window."
She stared at him for a moment, wondering if he would be angry at her for saying what she had done so a moment ago, so before he had time to speak she began rambling trying to distract him from what she said. "Everyone in the lowertowns has your name on their lips. Prince Arthur is a hero to them. They were all very surprised and in awe over a prince who would risk his life for his servant. Merlin is a hero too, for drinking the poison, but from the way they are speaking it's your tale they are wanting to hear. It has rather much gotten out of control, you know how gossip is. . . not that you gossip, but everyone knows how it spreads. Even if you do not believe it. Not that no one disbelieves your tales but this one is a bit hard to believe with some tellings. They believe you, they just do no believe the tales." Guinevère might keep talking, unless someone stopped her. She was getting rather nervous.

She was rambling, and Arthur was only half listening to Gwen. Had he been in a better mood, he would have thanked her for her discretion. He would have explained what happened with willingness. But no. Arthur was not in a good state. He kept brushing himself off, and then looked at the mended rip in his shirt, checking to see if it had begin to tear again. "Yes well this hero--" He used the term a little sarcastically. He did not see himself as a hero. He had been obligated to help Merlin. He did not owe him anything. Quite the opposite actually; Arthur owed Merlin. "Spent the night in the dungeon and is now a fugitive in his own kingdom!"
Never in a million years did he think his father would lock him up. He knew that Gwen knew he had spent the night there, after all, it was because of her that they were able to get the mortaeus flower to Merlin on time. And from seeing how Guinevère was, it hopefully meant that it had worked, despite the crushed petals. Once Arthur calmed down, he would find out for certain. "I need to remain here, at least for a few hours. Its the only place that I could get to which offers concealment." He did not exactly ask her if he could. He just stated that he was going to remain here.

"Yes, please, of course. Stay for as long as you need. I will not tell anyone you are here. My father does not work on this day, so you should be un-disturbed for the whole day unless an knight demands him to fix something." Guinevère answered as if he had asked her if he could rather then assumed he would be allowed. "He keeps some clean water stored just behind you in case you grow thirsty."
Guinevère took a step closer to him, she could see he was up set. "I am sorry your father reacted so, and treated you as thus. For what's it's worth, my lord, you saved Merlin's life. He almost died, and would have if he had gotten the flower a few moments later. We had thought he was dead for a few moments." She took a few more steps closer, "I for one, want to thank you very much, sire, for doing what you did."

Guinevère's calm demeanor managed to calm him down . . . even if it was just a bit. It was enough for him to be a little more grateful for her discretion and for a place to stay. Though he did not quite thank her yet. The mention of Merlin focused his attention on his servant, who willingly sacrificed his life for him. Her words did not fall upon deaf ears, for this time he was actually listening to her. She seemed genuinely grateful for his efforts and apologetic for the consequences. "So Merlin is alright then?" he asked. "Has he fully recovered from the poison?" He thought back to the moment where his father destroyed the flowers, and how worried he was that Merlin would die, because of him. Of course, he would never admit that.
He also knew that Guinevère seemed to be very close to Merlin. And why not. Merlin appeared to have feelings for Gwen. Perhaps she returned the affection. "You're welcome," he said casually, though there was sincerity behind it. "I understand that you care for him a great deal." He was not going to play matchmaker or anything, he was just saying her understood why Guinevère was so concerned about the man. Just as what Merlin had done when Guinevère was arrested.

Guinevère blushed when THE PRINCE of all people commented on her tender feelings for Merlin. "Yes, sire, Merlin is a very dear friend. He has been so since he came to your fine city. I was so worried for him when I saw him fall after drinking your cup. I can not thank you enough for your actions. If it's not to bold to say so, my lord, I believe Merlin would not have done that for jsut anyone. He must see you as a friend."
"He has not fully recovered. He is very weak, however we believe that with a few days rest and some hearty food he will be right back to polishing your armor and . . . . . and doing what he dose doe you. . . . " Whatever details that fully included. "I think he was worried for you, maybe he someone knew you were going to try to save him. He spoke of you when he was speaking English a few times."

Yup. It was rather clear that the two them shared a bond with one another. He was not going to say that in so many words though. He barley knew Guinevère as it was. "He was stupid enough to do it in the first place," he said. He did not really mean it like that. He knew he did not have a choice. He knew that he sacrificed his life for him. But Arthur's friendship with Merlin was not one he vocalized in kind words. Of course, when the time came to help him, he would not hesitate for a moment. "I'm sure he would have done the same for you." Well, for different reasons of course. "He tends to do ridiculous things . . . just as when he took the blame on himself for the curse on the water supply." Not a great thing to remind her of, as Arthur had been the one forced to arrest Gwen.
"Good." It was not just good, it was a MASSIVE relief to hear that he lives. Not just because he was Arthur's servant and he needed him to perform his duties . . . but because he saved his life, Arthur had to save his. And it worked for the best. "At least he's feeling better. I need him well rested for the amount of tasks I have for him," he said, purposely saying it in an overly casual tone as he did not want to express how glad he really was. He was . . . saying his name, and not speaking English? "Well, thats a rather . . . disturbing thought," Arthur commented making a face while thinking about it. "What other language does he speak, apart from Gibberish."

Her smile faded away, as the prince spoke more and more. How could he speak that way of someone who had been willing to die for him? It was rather . . . . Guinevère wanted to say something to him. To rant and yell and demand he leave. She wanted to walk out the door and yell for his men. Had she been more cold at heart she would have. Instead her voice became flat, and dismissive. Her eyes lowered like a good non-emotional servant and she only answered the direct question he asked of her.
He had said Merlin would do it for her, but he was wrong. Merlin would have warmed her yes, if something was in her cup but she would have only poured it out and burned the cup. Her father would not have demanded someone die. Had Merlin been wrong--he died. Had he been right--he died. "No, sire, I mis-spoke. He only stop speaking where we could understand." more emotion (anger) in her voice, "He was in -massive- pain from the poison meant for you." .. . . . . so much for unemotional.

Woah. Arthur made a mental note not to say anything against her loved one. He looked at her, not about to apologize for what he said. Why should he. Though she seemed to make it clear that he sacrificed himself for Arthur, not that the Prince didn't already know that . . . but she seemed to emphasize that fact. Yup. He had not made her happy. "You think I don`t know that?" He said in a bit rudely, though he almost immediately softened up after saying it. He did not like being reminded of how guilty he was already feeling.
His next words were spoken in less of a snippy tone. "I am not denying he saved my life, for he did. Otherwise, I would not have gone in search of the flower." Even though he appeared to be cocky and arrogant, he was not going to go into detail about what it took to get the flower, and the dangers he had encountered. It had not stopped him, and he was not going to brag about it.

"Pardon me, sire. You will have to forgive me. I must have misunderstood what your words were conveying." She said still feeling the anger for Merlin. Who was still weak and in pain as the drugs linger in his system. "I shall strive to not let it happen again." She did not look at him for a moment the raised her head. She would make him see.
"The drugs meant to kill you were inhanssed by magic. It was happening quicker then we thought. He was burning up and no among of water could keep him cool. I feared for his life, my lord, and feared you would make it in time as I watched the happy, forever sunny young man we both know twisting in pain under my fingers." She lowered her eyes, "And still he spoke of you. Worried about you and your journey." Looking back up at him, she tried to keep her voice calm, "You have a loyal servant, my lord." A shame that the princes' loyalty ended with keeping Merlin alive, and not with respect for the man who was willing to die for him. Just when she thought he might not be the grand bully after all. . . .

Arthur felt even worse when he heard her describe his condition. He would forever be indebted to his servant -- as odd as that sounded -- . But he still did not show it. He was not going to explain what he had been through for him, because he knew that it was nothing compared to what Merlin had done for him. He looked at her, and with a kind, regretful and almost sad voice, he spoke. "I'm sorry." The guilt was setting in far too much. To hear that another man suffered because of him . . . Arthur hated the thought.
"Had I known, I would have tried to come sooner. I do not wish that sort of pain on anyone, least of all him." Spending the night in the dungeon certainly was a small price to pay . . . and hearing Gwen describe just how excruciating Merlin's condition had been, made him calm down a bit about his own predicament. He would have spent even a week in the dungeon if it meant that Merlin would not have died on his behalf.

There WAS hope for him! Guinevère gave him a kind smile and shook her head, "You came as quickly as you could, Sire." She told him, "I am very sorry the king felt the need to have you locked up, and I wished he had not but everyone is grateful for you." She was VERY grateful! She could have hugged him. "When we heard were you were . . . . " She had been more worried for Merlin but also for him. "I am glad you got to escape for a while."
"I know Merlin will be glad to be back to work." Rather then dead, "He dose not seem the type to want to just sit around." Merlin was mostly sleeping (She hoped) but she was willing be bet he would not be keep down for long. he was young and a happy sort. He would want to be around people again soon. "I was on my way to visit him when I saw your boots slipping intot he window."

"Yes well, I expected as much. I don't think I will have to spend another night there. I have an audience with the king first thing . . . this morning." He took a moment to look and what he was wearing and how he needed to be more presentable . . . or perhaps more tattered to exaggerate how bad the experience had been. To think, Arthur would have had to spent these hours in the dungeon as well! "Besides, it's a small price to pay. And had you not come, Merlin would not have made it." It was literally, a team effort to save the servant. What a mission. "And don't tell anyone about this . . . please. I do not want it to get out that I escaped, even if it is only for a few hours."
Merlin was rather active, which is why it would have been odd to see him so . . . weak. "If you need to go, you can leave. I'll just . . . " He looked around the shop. A Less than ideal setting. "Stay here for a while." Lovely. He needed a bath, but he could not take one. He needed food, but he could not get it ------ he looked at Guinevère. Hmmmm. "Do you have any food around here?" He could not imagine that she would, but he was introducing a very important subject: his hunger.

"I will not tell anyone, sire, i swear it." She watched him for a moment, "Yes, you did help and I helped and Guais helped. We all worked together to save our friend. Merlin is lucky to have us and we are lucky to have him. . . . " Her voice grew softer, "I shall never forget the fear when I saw him fall in the great hall." She had thought he was dead, and had been so worried about him and his silly hat he was wearing.
"I doubt there is food here but I can fetch you some if you would like." She offered. Wondering what she would even find at this time in the morning. It was still darkish outside and the cooks would not be up yet. Everyone was sleeping and she could not buy meat, only food what she could find. Where would she find meat at this hour? "Perhaps some bread?" Meatless bread!

Arthur would never admit that he too had been fearful when Merlin collapsed on the floor. He had expected her to be concerned as well, and Gaius of course. Arthur also knew it would be his fault had Merlin died. "Well everything is sorted out now at least. He'll live to work another day." Arthur was not about to admit that he was considering Merlin to be a trusted friend, rather than just a servant to him. He knew that Guinevère would understand, since she was already calling them friends, and he knew Morgana would understand . . . but his father would never, and that concerned the prince for if a situation like this were to occur again . . . what if his father did more to stop him?
Bread. As light as that sounded, any food right now would be good! "That will do," he said, not fully satisfied by the idea of it but what choice did he have? He was not going to roam the streets in search of food. He would look like a beggar! He was the PRINCE and Future King of Camelot . . . not a bum on the street! "And you said that there is water here?" He asked, waiting for her to repeat where it was. If there was none, he would have to send her to get some of that as well.

Guinevère gave a small dip of a bow before turning and getting him the water. The cup was not very clean and she used her apron to wipe it down before dipping it into the bucket and then handing it to him. "I shall return with what bread I can find." She said and hurried out the door. She was not going to take bread away from her father or another mouth of the lowerclass so she walked -ALL- the way to the castle, and to the kitchens for bread.
Explaining why she needed it was the hard part, but she just said Merlin's name and they handed it right on over and asked her to send him their best wishes on getting well soon. So, not wanting to get caught in a lie, she took part of the bread to Merlin, and left it for when he awoke, and the walked -ALL- the way back to the blacksmith's shop. When she returned she was slightly out of breath. "Sire?" She whispered as she opened the door, and looked around for him.
