As a young child, she was supposed to have been killed in the great purge, Uther himself having given the order despite sparing her little sister. Some how, she had been smuggled out of Camelot and was raised by the priestesses of the old religion. She studied magic for many years, aiming to become a powerful sorceress.
Many years later, a fully grown woman, and a skilled swordswoman, Morgause dressed as a knight and returned to Camelot. Upon her arrival she killed five guards. When she first introduced herself to the court, she challenged Arthur. The next day they battled and she spared his life, only wanting to make a deal with him. Around the same time, she introduced herself to Morgana, and gave her a magical bracelet that would ease her sister's nightmares. She stated to Arthur that she knew of his mother, and that she was a wonderful woman before she left.
At the temple she was staying at, she met up with Arthur and his servant. After a test of the young Prince's character she summoned Ygraine's spirit and the spirit told Arthur of his birth which in turn, put Arthur against Uther. Her plans came to a halt when Merlin had convinced Arthur that she had tricked the young prince.
Morgause in a later attempt on Uther's life awoke the Knights of Medhir. She also approached Morgana once more, and won her alliance. She placed a spell upon her sister, and then another spell on the residents of Camelot, save for any whom were out when it was cast and her sister. Upon hearing of how her sister was in pain, and could very well die, Morgause called off her attempts at Uther's life and destroyed the knights so that Merlin would tell her what he used on Morgana. Upon the knights of Camelot entering Morgause used magic to take her sister and herself away from camelot and saved her sister. After that, they began plotting their vengeance on Camelot.
Over a year later, she allowed her sister to return to Camelot in hopes of getting their revenge. She and Morgana use a mandrake root and Uther's tears. The spell cast upon the mandrake root and tears eventually cause Uther to hallucinate and thus gave the citizens of the kingdom that their king may have been loosing his mind. She also had been working with Cenred to move against Camelot. She was enraged when a later siege of Camelot failed.
She later visited Morgana in Camelot and discovered that she was Uther's illegitimate daughter. She was elated to find out that Morgana could in all theory inherit the throne.
She helped Morgana with her plan to kill Arthur by getting Cenred to kidnap Gwen's brother Elyan and giving her a magical ring to guide Cenred's warriors to Arthur.
Morgause later met up with Morgana in a crowded market disguised as a poor old woman. She gave Morgana the Phoenix Eye to give to Arthur for his quest to claim The Fisher King's trident so it would kill him.
Morgause discovered when Arthur and Merlin set out to find the Cup of Life, by Morgana whom reported it to her. She got Cenred to fetch the cup for her, and eventually made an army of the living dead out of Cenred's men. She then killed King Cenred. The immortal soldiers stormed Camelot, and Morgana was crowned as queen of Camelot.
Morgause later attacked Merlin when he attempted to retrieve the Cup of Life. Gaius arrived in time to prevent her from killing the young warlock and attacked her with his own magic catching her off guard. Merlin defeated Morgause by smashing her against a pillar.
