The journey back to the city felt long and it was trying. Arthur was of course grateful for Merlin's company, relieved that it was his friend he saw when first entering . . . or perhaps re-entering this world. Along with Merlin's presence, it was Guinevère's as well that Arthur longed to see. Perhaps that awaited reunion is what made the journey feel so long. Amidst it, Merlin had updated Arthur with the situation of the kingdom, and the dangers it faced. It filled Arthur with guilt. Guilt for leaving Guinevère to deal with all this. Not even an heir to help fill the loneliness. Arthur had hoped that if nothing else, she would find herself with child so that she would have a blood remaining family. Even their family of heart had grown smaller, for it was brought to Arthur's knowledge that Gwaine did not survive. That Morgana had murdered him before seeking Arthur out.
He needed to get back to Guinevère. He needed to help her, for never did he doubt she was anything but a strong queen . . . however the threat of a two front war and enemies all around, was one that no single person should have to deal with alone. And while she technically was not alone, Arthur would still feel so much better, being at his rightful place by her side. For they ruled together, and now, could return to that dynamic. Though he was eager, they had to tread carefully, avoiding the patrols that seemed to be far more frequent than usual. Arthur sensed that something was wrong, however after knowing that it was Lot as well as the Saxons that threatened their lands, it made sense that there were so many surveying the land and ensure there were no impostors or those who posed to be a danger lurking about. And with that in mind, Arthur knew he had to keep his return a secret, just for now. Just until he reunited with Guinevère for she needed to be the next who knew of his return.
By the time he arrived back in the city it was late. Knights were returning from what he assumed was a patrol, and while looking at the castle, determining the best way to go to his and Guinevère's chambers, he overheard the men talking. Not just any men . . . Leon. Rushing down the stairs with Percival leading the patrol that had entered. "Any sign of her?" Leon asked, clear worry in his voice. Arthur froze for a moment, all other thoughts fleeing his mind as he focused solely on the words exchanged between the men. "We followed the tracks, but they split into three directions. We had to divide our men and could only afford to go into two." How many men were they following? From the sounds of it, a small army . . . yet not large enough to arouse suspicion when crossing Camelot's borders, for whoever they were . . . they did not sound like a friend of the kingdoms. "I came back to regroup. Once we gather more men, we'll ride out immediately." Arthur was still waiting for it; waiting to hear they were speaking of who he feared. Waiting for that confirmation. "We cannot afford to waste a moment. We must find the queen."
And there it was. Arthur felt himself freeze with the fear of discovering his wife had been kidnapped. Without a second thought he looked around and fortunately found what he needed for the moment. He stole borrowed a cloak that was lying out on the ground. Now normally, he would be rather reluctant to take a dirty cloak belonging to someone else but right now, desperate times called for desperate measures, and he didn't have time to sneak into the castle and then sneak back out. He pulled the cloak over him, making sure to conceal his face with the hood, and his weapon with the fabric that now shrouded him. He proceeded to quietly enter the stables, taking advantage of the stable boy tending to the horses that had just arrived. Merlin helped Arthur ready his horse, putting the saddle on and such. Urging the warlock to stay here and guard the castle, Arthur would go and bring home the queen.
Charging through the gates, he heard voices attempting to stop him, but he did not stop. Perhaps Merlin helped him with not being followed, but Arthur lacked the time to find out just what he did. He was grateful for it, because when he looked back, no one was behind him. He rode without stopping, following the tracks and when it came to the divide, quickly determined which direction was the one with the least amount of tracks, for that would be the one that the knights did not follow. It would be the one that were set up as traps if they returned empty handed. Arthur was unsure for how long he had been riding. He stopped only to give his horse rest, but sleep eluded him. He knew she was alive, he felt that she was alive. But he feared to think the conditions he was currently under, and what they may have done to her. What plans they had for her. Hearing in the near distance the sounds of camp, and the smoke from the fire, Arthur slowed his horse to a halt and dismounted.
He tied the reigns to a near by tree, one that was behind a thicker bush for concealment, and put his cloak over the saddle. He cautiously made his way toward it, seeing a few men keeping guard. They were thinly spread out, so two or three stationed in each direction. Their first mistake. Arthur crouched behind a tree, taking a few rocks and throwing them one way. Two of the men followed the sound, moving in different directions. As one came closer to him, he quickly grabbed him, making sure there was no sound while doing so. He then took the man's uniform, pulling the vest and outer pieces over his own armor so that he matched his appearance. He took the fabric that the man used to cover the lower portion of his face, and tied it around his own. It was dark enough that his unfamiliar eyes would not be properly seen. Emerging from behind the tree, he gave a small nod and walked right past the man standing alone. He now was in the camp, and his eyes searched the vicinity for Guinevère. It did not take long to find her, for she was near a tree, her hands bound.
Arthur felt a surge of anger for what they had done to her, but knowing that claiming vengeance was not priority. He wanted to get her safely away from here . . . far away from here. There were not too many men around, and some were sleeping, while others conversing among themselves. So no one paid attention when one dressed as their own approached her. Guinevère's eyes were closed as Arthur walked closer, his heart beating faster for while he had been in darkness for these past three years, it felt like an eternity since he'd last seen her. He didn't know how to explain his return, and the pressure was on for him to do so now. He may fool the other men, but he could not fool his wife; she knew him too well. He crouched on the ground in front of her, just watching her, wanting to wipe the soot off her cheek, but really only needing a reason to caress her skin. But he couldn't alarm her. He subtly turned his head to make sure no one was looking, before pulling down the fabric over the lower half of his face, and taking a deep breath. "Guinevère."

I ABSOLUTELY agree with you on that!!!! Some shows build SUCH a following that the fandom lasts YEARS after the shows ends!! (i.e. Buffy, Friends, etc) Despite all the controversy surrounding the show, writers, actors, and fans . . . theres still a strong group of us Merlinians out there !! Which is why I hope this role play lasts FOREVER!!! Rping and graphicing is what keeps this show alive for me !!

I TOTALLY AGREE MORDRED!! I think the actors did a FANTASTIC job!! Sadly, it isn't confirmed about the three part movie! And IF they are doing it, they won't be using the same actors ! Bradley has already confirmed that he won't be part of it! And neither will the others like Angel, Colin, Katie, etc! All of them are already moving on with new projects and such! AND I believe the Merlin producers already have a new show planned for next year or so, called Atlantis !!
Sadly, Merlin really is over!! And their ratings for the finale were awful so I don't think they'll be continuing anything IT WILL BE MISSED THOUGH!!! I hope the fandom lives FOREVER!!!

Recent events had weighed heavily on the young king. Ever since Guinevère's banishment, he knew that he was not the same. No one was. There was always that underlying tension among everyone. That subject that dared not be broached. And Arthur knew it was only going to get worse once the negotiations with Nemeth were finalized. And as if that all was not bad enough, Elyan's body and mind had not been his own. Others didn't say it, but there was that clear assumption of why that particular knight had initially attacked the king. Arthur never doubted the former blacksmith's loyalty. Yet at the same time, hated that he was forced in a position of choosing between his sister and his king. Nothing was how it was supposed to be. Arthur had predicted this time to be extremely different and yet all that filled the castle was tension. And Arthur knew it was his own fault.
Had he taken responsibility for his actions -- leading the raid on the druid camp -- then Elyan's life would not have been jeopardized as it had been. If anything had happened to the knight, Arthur would never forgive himself. He wondered how much better off this family would have been without him and his own. Tom would still be alive. Guinevère could have happily been with Lancelot. And Elyan would not have been forced into the position he had been, both in terms of Guinevère and with his recent position. How could he be so harmful to people he cared for so much? Yet he supposed it made sense. Morgana was a clear example of that. Shaking his head of these thoughts, he needed to check on Elyan to see how he was recovering. And then explain the reasons and results of everything. He had finally taken responsibility for what he did to the druids, now he needed to explain it to Elyan for he owed him that at the very least.
Casually dressed, however with his sword at his side, Arthur made his way to the knight's chambers, knocking on the door. At least something somewhat good had come from all this . . . and that was the druids were a free people. Though he wasn't entirely sure if the council actually approved of his decision. He only knew in his heart that it felt right. And ironically, Guinevère was one of the people who would reaffirm his decision, by expressing her faith in him. It did not take long for Elyan to answer and once again, Arthur dismissed these thoughts for the time being. "Elyan," he greeted with a small nod. "I just wanted to come by to see how you were recovering from recent events." That sounded a lot better than using the term possession or something of the like. He wasn't sure if Elyan preferred to rest or if he would welcome him inside. Arthur assumed neither and waited for either him to say he was not up for company, or to welcome him inside. Arthur would not presume what Elyan preferred without him demonstrating his preference.

Arthur gave another slight smile at the teasing yet he was finding it more and more difficult to keep the mood light, when it was broaching such serious subjects. But if there was anyone that was able to make such a situation feel less intense and severe, it was most certainly Merlin. Arthur paused in a pensive silence as Merlin spoke of how they had no alternative. There was not an ounce of regret in his voice, just as Arthur was confident in the decisions they had each made to end the lives of those who had posed as a threat to not only them, but the kingdom as a whole. "I know," he said in a low voice. Even seeing Morgana fall, he felt no regret or remorse. He had lost Morgana years ago. All he felt was relief, that Merlin had finally allowed Camelot to be at peace . . . even if Arthur was not there to witness it. "You eliminated the greatest threat ever posed in the kingdom," he said, or in other words: Morgana. They may be related by blood but she was no sister of his.
Awaiting Merlin's reply to Arthur's somewhat phrased question, he found himself almost nervous, yet Merlin's reaction and words immediately alleviated that nervousness. He wasn't sure why. Perhaps because this was all so unfamiliar. They had been through a great deal together yet magic . . . well, this was not a conversation Arthur ever thought he would be having with Merlin. He gave a small smile, though one filled with emotion. "It is I who owe you gratitude." Merlin had nothing to be thankful for, because having realized all the warlock had done . . . well, Arthur wasn't even sure he knew the half of it. "You have done more for me and Camelot than I could ever repay. I shall forever be indebted to you." He wasn't sure what had happened in his absence and knew that he and Merlin would soon have to engage in that discussion. But right now, he just wanted him to know that he wanted Merlin by his side. That he was aware of how much he wouldn't have been able to do without him.

Arthur waited for a witty or sarcastic retort from Merlin. Perhaps even an action to encourage the tease. But instead, Arthur saw something far more rare: silence. Merlin said nothing as he wordlessly bent down to pick up the weapons that Arthur had so carelessly thrown about. It was his first indication that something was wrong. So Arthur just watched him, waiting to see if he was over analyzing Merlin's mood, continuing to wait for something from him. But nothing. He just remained . . . obedient. Which, Merlin was -- to some extent -- but he also showed more defiance at times. It was after all what had intrigued Arthur about him. And as the years went on, it became more of the brotherly thing to do between them, rather that a sign of class distinction. "Alright, what's the matter with you?" Arthur asked casually, though he was indeed concerned. Merlin wasn't usually like this, so whatever happened, must have been rather significant.
"Is this about what I said in Longstead, about being saved by a girl?" He had made fun of Merlin for being saved by a girl -- Guinevère -- and wonder if Merlin was feeling, emasculated from his comments. "If it makes you feel any better, Guinevère has saved my life too. More than once in fact. Its really nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed by." Perhaps by relating to it, Merlin wouldn't take his teasing comments so seriously. Besides, it was true. She had saved him from those gargoyle creatures that had been attacking the kingdom, and then broken the spell with love's true kiss, and well, emotionally, she had saved him far many more times than he could count. Arthur wasn't even sure if it was the reason Merlin seemed less chipper than usual, but unless his friend gave him reason for why he felt this way, Arthur could only guess, and this was all his mind could currently come up with.

Arthur looked at Merlin when he claimed to have been helping Gaius last night. Arthur didn't believe him for a second. "Re-catagorizing the library?" Arthur repeated, in a bit of a question but one more rhetorical. It was merely a display of his disbelief. Apparently that's what they were calling it nowadays. Arthur recalled in his youth when he would make up excuses for what he was doing when he was actually in the company of a woman. Often excuses like, going for a hunt, patrolling, exercising his dogs, and so on. Re categorizing the library was certainly a new one. "I see," Arthur continued, the disbelief thick in his voice was it was in his expression.
He was not about to dismiss the subject, but decide to play around with it a bit more before being more blunt. Not that he was really trying to be subtle either. "And how is that limp of yours?" He asked, pretending to look at his papers again as he appeared to be nonchalant. Yes. He had noticed Merlin had walked with a limp. It was rather obvious. And if Merlin was with a woman well . . . that certainly opened the possibilities of how Merlin got that limp to quite a few. Most of them suggestive ones. Unable to resist, Arthur looked back up at Merlin, feigned curiosity on his expression because he wasn't asking out of concern for Merlin's injury. More out of teasing for what had obviously caused it.

Sleep seemed to be an impossibility right now, under the circumstances. Everytime Arthur closed his eyes, he saw flashes of potential dangers and harm that could currently be inflicted upon his wife. She was under Morgana's wrath and they all knew what sort of horrible things the priestess was capable of. He just wanted Guinevère back. He wanted to be sleeping in their bed, with her wrapped in his arms and wake up the same way. Instead, he was lying on the ground, finding it was colder and more uncomfortable than usual. Because he could only feel that crippling fear of his missing wife: not know if she was alright, or even -- dare he say -- alive. No. She was alive. She had to be. He could feel it. Surely he would be able to feel his heart breaking if something happened to her.
Surely their connection was strong enough. Though even if she was alive, didn't mean she wasn't suffering at the hands of Morgana. He knew this was all his fault, that every strike Morgana made against Camelot and the people he cared about, was an attempt to get to him. Sometimes he wished he could just go to her and offer himself, but knew that no good would come of that. He just had to believe that they would find Guinevère and bring her home safely. But that thought wasn't enough to warm him or ease his mind. So he tossed and turned, deciding to open his eyes. Most everyone was sleeping, but in the distance, he saw a figure. Arthur raised his head and looked around. Everyone was accounted for except . . . Elyan. Of course. Entirely understandable. While every man here cared and loved the queen, Elyan was her brother.
Deciding that Arthur was not going to get much sleep either, perhaps his time would be better spent trying to ease Elyan's trouble mind. Though he was aware of the hypocrisy for the king knew that nothing apart from Guinevère's safe return could ease his own mind. He quietly walked toward where Elyan stood: far out of earshot but not far away from sight. "Elyan," he greeted so that he would not alarm the knight and he walked toward him until he stood by his side. Arthur wasn't sure what to say that could console him. For it had really been Merlin who had been helping Arthur cope with Guinevère's kidnapping. How could he offer the same comfort to Elyan when Arthur's mind, heart and soul were filled with fear and worry for her. Still, he had to try. Elyan was his brother of heart and through relation, though the former being far stronger.

Arthur felt an odd sort of nervousness as he made his way down the hall toward one of the knight's chambers. While he was often a confident man, there was usually just one particular subject that could make him feel easily frazzled, insecure and flustered: Guinevère. It was both in a wonderful way, as if he was a young man desperately in love. But it also had its more intense moments, just as what had happened in the recent past. He had banished her, yet they were reunited in Ealdor. And then with everything that had happened, they had not had the chance to talk. The castle was finally settling down, with Morgana and Helios' men gone, so Arthur knew that chance to talk to her would soon come.
But there was someone else he wished to talk to first, and that was Elyan. Not only was he of course her brother, but Arthur considered him his own brother too. To hear what the torture he had endured made Arthur feel terrible. For he knew it was his fault, and he knew that Elyan's loyalty was what made him suffer for so long. So the main purpose to see him was to ensure he was recovering well. Though Gaius had assured him of such, Arthur would feel far better seeing it himself rather, especially since he didn't even know until they retook control of the castle if Elyan, Gwaine, Gaius and the others were still alive. Arthur was all too relieved that they were, for he doubted he could endure the loss of either man. Realizing he was now standing outside Elyan's door, Arthur reached into his pocket to look at the ring that he had given Guinevère for their first engagement.
Isolde's death had opened his eyes to so much. Despite everything that happened between then, Arthur knew that Guinevère loved him. And he of course loved her. That was all that mattered. Taking a deep breath, he tucked the ring back in his pocket and knocked on the door before slowly opening it. "Elyan?" he questioned, in a tone that was not loud enough to wake him if he was resting, but loud enough to be heard if he was awake. Noticing he was, Arthur continued. "Am I disturbing you?" He further asked, not wanting to impose if Elyan did not feel strong enough for company. After all the man had gone through, it would be understandable. But alas, if Elyan was one thing it was strong and resilient.

Arthur was currently in his chambers, reading over some papers. Guinevère had just left to tend to some things, and it left him utterly bored with reading through the documents with no hopes of distraction. But alas, a king's responsibilities never ceased. There was always a document that needed to be read, or a matter of state that needed to be discussed. At least this was better than sitting through a series of meetings. While Arthur often endured these, today he felt more restless than usual. Hearing footsteps approaching, he only looked up when he heard someone enter. It would either be Guinevère or Merlin for they were the only two who didn't knock. Well, Merlin didn't have to knock at this time of day. At night, it was a different story.
"Merlin," Arthur greeted casually before looking back down at his papers, though his mind was no longer focused on them. Now, he that had welcomed the distraction that presented itself. "Late night?" Arthur asked, trying to suppress his smirk but knew a smile came out despite his efforts. Even still, his voice was filled with teasing and well, clear suggestiveness as to what may have caused the late night. After he'd served them supper, Merlin had made his leave so, and Arthur had not soon forgotten the conversation they had. It was far more brief than the king would have liked and fully intended to discover more on the subject of this mystery woman.

Arthur gave a small nod in return to Percival's greeting as the pair began to walk to the tavern. "How much do you think Gwaine has had to drink by now?" Arthur couldn't help but smile at the question, for out of all of them . . . Gwaine was certainly the one who drank the most. And spent the most time at taverns. He wasn't sure if that meant that the knight had the highest tolerance for alcohol out of all of them. All he knew was that it meant Gwaine was the biggest drinker. And that he tended to drag along others with them and join in the fun. It would be interesting to see him tonight, since Arthur did not always get to join the tavern scene. Which was probably a good thing. "We'll be lucky if he's still conscious," Arthur said in playful teasing toward their brother in arms.
"He could drink for the group of us, perhaps for the whole tavern even." Arthur's mind went back to Gwaine's first time in Camelot, and how he had bought food and drink for the entire tavern . . . sending the bill over to Arthur. The most ridiculous way to spend so much coin, but he had found a way for them to work it off. So much had changed since then. "Free from a training session tomorrow, I'm sure he'll show no restraint." He had decided to give the knights the morning off from training sessions. Since Elyan's death, he wanted them to enjoy their time . . . for his death showed how short life could be. And he wanted them to take advantage of the joys it had to offer every now and then.

Arthur listened as Percival recalled certain events. Arthur's short description seemed to trigger the memory as the knight spoke of sort of remembering her. But his following uncertainty as to whether they knew her name, or whether she had needed their protection, revealed that not all was remembered. Which of course was understandable, considering he'd been under the creature's curse. "It was more like, you were in need of protection," Arthur said with a bit of a teasing smile. Had things not ended as well as they did, Arthur would never jest or tease about such things. It was only because everyone had made it out alive that it was easier to tease and mock the knights.
"Her name I believe she told you was Lamia." At least that was what Guinevère had told him. And Arthur had in turn explained that it was the name of the creature, and that it had only taken a human form but . . . well, Merlin, Guinevère and himself had all seen the non human form of the creature. " The name of the creature was Lamia," he further explained. "And It was, not exactly a young woman, but merely taking the form of one to lure men to her. And she was indeed successful with the lot of you." Except for Merlin which he still didn't understand. What had made him immune to her spell? While it was curious and Gaius had no explanation either, he supposed it was not of too much importance.

Arthur slightly raised his eyebrow, looking at Merlin and wondering why he was so eager to kill Mordred. Ignoring his friend's tone, he was more curious as to why Merlin suddenly wanted to see the druid boy dead. "I'm not going to needlessly kill a man who is no threat to us." Because that was the difference between being a warrior and fighting to protect yourself . . . and murder, killing someone in cold blood. Granted, Mordred had been one of the men who had held them captive, but still. In that moment, he could not hurt them. And Arthur only prayed that he would not regret that decision. "Its not as easy as you think Merlin, taking a man's life." While Merlin had occasionally fought in battle -- mostly attacks they faced on the road and then of course in Ealdor -- he was not a trained warrior.
Despite his massive improvement with a sword compared to when Arthur first met him. When he heard Merlin mumble clotpole, Arthur gave looked at him, though Merlin's gaze was busy searching for the items that they needed to start a fire. Taking advantage of Merlin being distracted, Arthur scooped up some snow in his hand to create a small ball and threw it at Merlin's face. It was his payback for being called a clotpole, but also . . . attempting to lighten the mood and help ease whatever was troubling Merlin. For this entire journey, his mind seemed preoccupied, more than usual. And Arthur still wasn't entirely sure what it was. So with his small act of revenge, Arthur then just gave a smug grin, not letting the cold or dangerous mission ahead phase his mood.

Arthur was just leaving his shared chambers with his wife. He had arrived at the castle with Merlin during this late hour not long ago. The warlock had gone to Gaius to quickly explain what was happening, and Arthur in the meantime had wanted to check on his wife. She was sleeping, and looked so peaceful, that he did not wish to awaken her until they had a better understanding of what was happening. He needed to see Gaius first, and maybe they could all determined a plan of how to reveal this news, first to the queen, then to the knights and then ultimately, the kingdom. Whilst in their chamber, he had found his cloak which would prove handy in a moment such as this. He felt both surprised and saddened to find his things still here. He knew he shouldn't feel the former, and it was the latter emotion that had made him sit on the edge of the bed where his wife slept, lean down to kiss her forehead and whisper I love you before exiting their room. The excitement to see her was overwhelming, but rationality kept him from waking her, aware that she would have questions and they needed to have some answers.
Perhaps the three of them together right now could find out the circumstances of Arthur's return. And he desperately prayed that it was permanent. He couldn't bare to leave Guinevère and his family of heart again. Right now, this was his greatest fear -- as was the danger that Camelot filled with at the threat of a two front war. So that also helped in his determination to catch up on all that had happened with two people he greatly trusted. The cloak helped provide some concealment, and he chose the more unused halls in the castle, ones that he knew would not be patrolled by the guards. While the castle physically looked the same, the air felt different about it. And he knew that it was more than the hour being late and the fact that everyone was asleep.Hearing footsteps approaching, Arthur ducked behind a corner in the hallway until the footsteps faded. He kept his eyes on the men and began to walk backwards, not realizing that there was someone behind him.
Not until he bumped right into them. He quickly spun around, not having his sword on him -- for Merlin had taken it so that Arthur would be less noticed as it was a very recognizable sword. Arthur kept his head down to further hide his face from whoever he collided into, knowing that it could make him look more mysterious and a potential threat. So unable to help it, he slightly raised his gaze, keeping his head down but able to see enough to recognize the person. Lady Elenora. She had always been a good friend to both him and Guinevère, and while he knew her well, he was unsure what to do in this moment. Should he speak? Should he just walk off? She couldn't see his face right now, but . . . would she call out for the guards? It would make sense of she did, but Arthur couldn't allow her to do that. So instead, he just gave a slight bow of apology, and stepped to the side to walk past her, though somewhat cautiously as he was still awaiting her response to bumping into a hooded figure in the middle of the night.

"Oh don't worry," Arthur said with a slightly taunting tone. "You'll have plenty to clean after this," he said with an equally cheeky smile to mimic Merlin's. When Merlin asked him if he was going to help him . . . well, Arthur smiled remained in place. "Of course I'll help," he said far too enthusiastically and willingly that it came off as pure sarcasm, which is was. So with that, Arthur pushed over the wooden sword holder, knocking it and all its contents to the ground. "There. Those weapons needed to be rearranged," he said, staring at the scattered weapons, which created more of a mess and thus, a hindrance rather than a helpful action. Further more, he tossed some aside, as if looking for a specific sword, when he already had his training weapon in his sword belt.
"These really need to be polished Merlin. No matter though. You can do it along with my armor and boots after wards." Another teasing remark, yet with truth. Standing from his crouched position, after having thrown a few weapons about, he stood on his feet and watched Merlin. "See. I can be helpful," he told him, obviously knowing he was being anything but helpful to the manservant. But what would their relationship be if not teasing and filled with playful jest. Though the fun was probably more for Arthur right now than for Merlin.

Arthur gave a bit of a laugh at Merlin saying that he was saintly. "More like the devil," he greeting jokingly, knowing that Merlin was far from that. Finding out that he had been his silent protector . . . well, Arthur would more accurately call him a guardian than anything negative. But as the topic shifted to a more serious note, it was getting harder to find the strength and will to smile. When Merlin confirmed that Mordred was dead, Arthur felt a wave of relief. He had stabbed him and knew he had fallen, but he had fallen unconscious shortly after, so wasn't sure if the druid had actually died or somehow managed to survive his wound. "I killed him," Arthur stated, unsure what was in his tone. Not remorse. Not regret. But . . . also no happiness pleasure for he had taken the life of someone he'd considered a brother. There was no joy in that. Only a reassuring feeling that he would no longer be a threat. Speaking of which . . . "And you killed Morgana," he suddenly remembered, his voice holding a slight hint of a question or a statement that perhaps needed confirmation.
Arthur had seen it and while he would always mourn for the sister he'd lost . . . he'd lost her years ago. The woman she had become was cold, ruthless and lacked any sort of sympathy or soft emotion toward an other. If nothing else, Arthur was grateful that she would not pose as a threat to the kingdom. He had that peace of mind that Guinevère would not have to deal with her wrath, and the people would be safe from her. This battle had changed so much and Arthur wasn't even sure he realized the half of it. As the subject came to Merlin's magic, Arthur looked into his friends eyes, seeing the sincerity of his words and offer. Flashes of their previous conversation entered his mind, Merlin being more concerned with Arthur not putting him in a difficult position, rather than the consequences of potentially losing his head. So the fact that Merlin was willing to never use magic again . . . he was willing to do that? It just showed what a true friend Merlin was, and Arthur could not be selfish enough to even consider the option.
Not after everything Merlin had done for him and once again, Arthur probably didn't even know the half of it. "No," he began to say, wanting Merlin to know that he was sure in his words. Had Arthur not been dying, perhaps the anger over Merlin's revelation would have lingered longer. But nor did Arthur regret what he told him in his last breaths. "I told you that I didn't want you to change. That I want you, to be you." Because magic was part of who he was, and Arthur appreciated him the way he was, even more so finding out how much Merlin had truly done and risked for him. "I meant those words Merlin. I may not understand what you can do, but I would be honored to learn more about it." Embracing magic, because finally, Arthur had realized its potential for good, rather than seeing it constantly used for evil. "If you would let me," he added, not wanting Merlin to feel uncomfortable, but also wanting to give the warlock the ability to choose whether Arthur could be there to witness his grand powers.
