When Gawain opened his eyes, he was not sure if it was late at night or early in the morning. He groaned, lifting his head from the table and began to stretch his arms. His entire body was sore, but that was to be expected after working non stop in a profession which required quite a bit of upper body strength. And on top of that, he was not even slept comfortably on the small mattress he had on the ground. Instead, he had just slept in a chair, with his head on the desk and thanks to that awkward position, his neck was terribly sore.
He let out a big yawn before standing up and looking around his shop to orientate himself. This only took a few seconds, and he went outside to get a nice breath of fresh air. The streets were fairly busy, answering his confusion as to what time of day it was, as the daily hustle began in the city. People were rushing to set up shop, markets were opening, and there were already shoppers scurrying about, eager to get their shopping done as early as possible.
He stood there for a few moments, just watching the people as the energy of the city came alive. And that was when, he saw something rather unexpected, but not too random. Well, not random until he saw the woman accompanying his daughter. "DADDY!" She cried, running towards him, as Gawain opened his arms up for her, lifting her up. It was a rather reflexive action, though he was extremely curious as to why she was here... and further more, why she was here with a strange woman. And that was when the woman continued to explain that a man had been following his daughter. Wait. A MAN?! Following his daughter?!
Gawain's eyes widened in fear at this thought. Who would have done that? He knew that the city was crawling with thieves and criminals, but why his precious daughter?! He felt his heart beat a bit faster, as the thought of nearly her becoming a victim to who knows what entered his mind. "A m-man? Who? What did he look like?" Gawain was not the smoothest talker, especially when he was nervous and scared, and this was one of those instances which lead him to stutter.

He was still extremely nervous about this whole situation, even if his daughter was not. He also knew how excited his daughter was to hear the musician play again so Gawain was rather torn about how to proceed. He wanted to give Emma every she wanted but at the same time, did not want her to be in the company of someone with such a large weapon! Soon enough the, the musician played and Emma began clapping and moving around in her attempt to dance. Gawain was too scared to let her down so her `dancing`consisted of very limited and slightly awkward body movements.
She was clapping and giggling though, rejoiced by the music that filled the air. While the boy seemed rather nice and polite, it did not alleviate any of Gawain`s concern. You couldn`t be too careful in a place like this. When the music was finished, Emma applauded excitedly and before Gawain could make his leave, she started talking. And when Emma started talking, it was hard to make her stop.
"I want too!" She squealed at the idea of learning to play. "Daddy can make one, but he can not play. He is so bad, and he not a very good teacher, because he can't play." Gawain made a face at his daughter's explanation of his 'bad musical skills'. He was not embarrassed about that... ok, just a little embarrassed. But he was more concerned about how much his daughter was talking.
"I'M EMMA!" She exclaimed in a very loud, very proud voice. Gawain's eyes widened and he immediately put his hand on her mouth, stopping her from saying anything else. "What did daddy say about talking to strangers, and how its dangerous?" He hoped it did not personally offend the musician, but it was risk he felt worth taking. He slowly removed his hand from his daughter's mouth and looked at Thomas.
"We should really be on our--"
"AND HE'S GAWAIN!" Emma blurted out, again, very proud of herself. "He's a backsmoth. He can make flutes for you!" .... Now that Emma had offered his services, even if she had not said the word properly, Gawain felt far too impolite to take back the offer.
(OOC: I'm so sorry about the delay in posting. I hope we can still continue this thread.)

Gawain looked at her sadly, before looking ahead at the grave. "I completely understand." He did, maybe more than anyone else, unless they of course lost a father. Though the relationship of who he lost, and who she had lost was still completely different, it still created a hole in the heart that would never be mended. "Sometimes I still wait for her to come home," he told her, with a bit of a smile, though it was only a reflection of his already sad expression. He did not often talk about his late wife, for it was something that he needed to deal with silently...for Emma's sake. But maybe Guinevère was different. Maybe she would prefer to talk about her father.
He would have offered his house for her to stay at. Even if he wasn't there, his family still would be, but he knew of her duties and her work in the castle and staying in one of the outlying villages would be too much distance to travel on a daily basis. "He was a good man Gwen. And we'll see parts of him, every day in you." There wasn't much he could say, only the truth. Gawain did not care about what others said, he knew Tom and he knew that he did not have a cruel bone in his body. "He couldn't have left a better legacy," he added, referring to her of course.

Gawain was still wide eyed and did not step any closer to her. Despite the fact that she was apologizing, he was still wary of having his daughter so close to a man with a dagger! But he could somewhat understand. Most people probably carried weapons. But there was a difference between actually witnessing the weapon and then assuming that they had one. Gawain tended to be the more paranoid kind of person, which was why he was still stuttering a bit. "Oh, yes, I-I understand. Still, sorry to be a bother! We'll leave from this dark abandoned alley way where there is no one around." He spoke the last part in a bit of a louder voice, just so hopefully, a passerby would stop and look just in case this flute boy decided to stab him.
"DADDY! Flute!" Emma exclaimed. She had struggled so that she could see what was going on, and looked just in time to see the flute. She pointed excitedly, a wide smile on her lips. Gawain nodded awkwardly, with an equally awkward, and very forced smile on his lips. He didn't want his daughter to pick up on his fear, and clearly she did not. "I want to hear song! Play me song...please!" Gawain had to admit that he was proud she remembered her manners....but wait!
"I'm sure he's too busy to play us anything...." Or was he? Even if he wasn't, Gawain was still a bit fearful but was frozen in place while his six year old daughter engaged in a conversation with a stranger.....who had a dagger!

The festival had been a drastically busy time for Gawain. As the main blacksmith of the town, he was responsible for getting the necessary weapons and tools for the various competitions that would be held during the next five days. It was only the first day and he already felt swamped with work. Still, he could not deprive his little princess of enjoying the festival and tonight, there would be a many performances right here in the market. He ordinarily did not like the idea of Emma being out so late, but he was with her (not that that was a very reassuring form of protection) and they would hopefully not be out for too long.
As a young boy took the stage, flute in hand, Gawain held his daughter up so that she could get a better view. A smile broke out on her lips as she clapped along to the music, and the singing that soon followed. "Daddy! I want flute too!" She exclaimed excitedly. While it would be impossible for her to get everything a child desired, he tried to give her whatever he could. They were not considerably rich, but they were not extremely poor either.
"Maybe we can ask the nice man where he got it from," Gawain suggested. He could indeed make a flute, as carving was one of his trades, but making it was not the problem; it was playing it and he lacked the skills to be able to do that. But maybe they could get an encore performance. When Thomas was done, Gawain kept an eye on him, and still holding his daughter in his arms, began to follow him. Had he not had the child, some may think he was a mysterious stranger, up to no good, stalking a young man. But how evil could one appear to be when they held an innocent little girl?
Even when going into an abandoned alley way...... well this seemed dangerous. Maybe he should let the flute idea go, but Emma seemed so set on it. This was where he tended to spoil her, but that often conflicted for his overprotective tendencies. "Um... excuse me, Sir?" He could not hear them, he was too far away, but he seemed to stop. Gawain gulped. He was not the bravest man out there but this seemed like a seemingly innocent musician and so Gawain went closer to him. "Sorry to be a bother but..." WAIT! Was he grabbing for a dagger?! GOOD LORD! Gawain quickly shielded Emma's eyes, not wanting her to become alarmed at seeming such a weapon. He put his hand on the back of her head so that it was nestled in his shirt. A casual enough action not to raise concern in her, but still served its purpose. The blacsksmith's owns eyes widened, hoping that he wasn't about to meet his death. "Oh... n-never mind. We'll just be on our way then...." he said, eyes still wide as he began to take a few steps backwards, keeping his eyes on the musician's hand. This definitely hadn't been one of Gawain's brighter ideas.

Poor thing! Gawain wasn't sure what to do as he knew that nothing would ease that pain. All he could do was offer emotional support, though he would not be offended if it meant nothing and did nothing for her. The fact that she wasn't talking....she seemed to be locked in a trance. Maybe everything for her was surreal right now. "Gwen, its time to go home." He gently placed his hand on her shoulder, hoping that she would be a bit more responsive, but still understanding it if she couldn't be.
"I'll walk you home." Whether she chose to react to his words or not, he did not mind. He was still going to escort her home, so that she would at least not be alone right now. "Are you ready?" It was nearly impossible to walk away from a loved one at a funeral. As if that was the final act of letting that person go. Gawain would not led his own pain over his loved one cloud the current situation. Today, it was about her father. It was about losing a dear friend, and a good man.

Today was going to be a difficult day to get through for all Tom's friend and family. Everyone was gathered for his funeral, an unexpected dramatic death. Gawain was devastate, but he could only imagine what his dear daughter was going through. She lost her only family member, and it was a horrible thing to endure. When Gawain lost Emma, had he not had a daughter to care for, he would have lost himself. But now, Gwen was on her own. Well, sort of. She had close friends, for Gawain was not about to distance himself from her just because her father was dead. She was far too close a friend to do that.
He sent Emma home with his parents, and told them he was going to check on Guinevère. They began to head home while Gawain went towards Gwen. "Gwen," he said in a sad voice. "I am so sorry for your loss." It was a very generic thing but he was not sure what else he could say. He knew that when you lost someone, words made no difference. There was no vocal way to ease the pain of accepting the fact that the person was never going to be in your life; that you would never see them again. Gawain hated that she had to learn of this loss so young. "If there's anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to ask." He would try to be here for her as much as he possibly could. He had known her father too long to just walk away at his death. Tom helped Gawain by giving him work opportunities which in turn, helped cope with Emma's death. Now Gawain was going to do whatever he could to help Gwen through the process.

His hands are rough, as is consistent with any blacksmith, and his skin is light, though at times it can be smudged with dirt. Gawain is that of the lower class and this is shown through his attire. Gawain is uneducated, since he belongs to the lower class of England. Because of this, he can not read nor can he write, though he constantly wishes he could. He does want his daughter to learn, as he puts he above everything else. He focuses on his strengths, though he knows he is weak. He puts on a brave face for his daughter, though his heart aches over the loss of his wife. He only suppresses those emotions so that his daughter will not see him in such a mess. Gawain is very creative, and this is shown through the merchandise he sells, from jewelery, to decorative pieces; he enjoys work though the pressure of making it successful enough to cover all costs and pay taxes is constantly on his mind. In addition to that, he makes ornaments and jewelry, demonstrating his creative mind. He is not skilled with weapons however as he never had the time to train with them. .:Accents:. English
| ~ • ~ | History | ~ • ~ |
.:Birthplace:. Willowdale, Camelot .:Family:.
- Wife: Emma -- deceased --
- Daughter: Emma [named after her mother] *Portrayed by Skye McCole Bartusiak
- Father: William
- Mother: Elaine
- Sister: Kathryn [has four sons]
- Brother In Law: Robert
.:Occupation:. Blacksmith: Was the Apprenctice of Tom until he passed. Now, he has taken over and opened a new shop. .:Current Location of Residence:. City, though his actual house is in Willowdale .:History:. was born into a small, poor, farming family in a rural town. As a child, he was a very free spirit. He was a dreamer, believing in unrealistic possibilities and opportunities. Though his family was not rich, he did not mourn over it. He was an optimist, believing that everything and anything was possible. He was the epitome of a dreamer, and was always planning out his life, without really a set goal in mind. He wanted to travel around the world, and see new things. His ultimate dream was to move into town and open a small shop of his own. He never did express much interest in farming, and so knew that he wanted to change and break the tradition that his family carried for so many generations. The thought of being a blacksmith intrigued him, and so he would spend his childhood making different things . . . mostly sculpting things out of different stones and such.
Among his dreams, a woman existed. She was their neighbor, living in the same general district as his family. They were good childhood friends, and from a young age, he told her all the time that he planned to one day marry her. This was literally a dream that came true. When he was 17, he married her. She convinced him to achieve his other dream of opening a shop, but he wanted to dedicate all of his time to her, for not too long after they were married, she became pregnant. This was a life changing event that produced both a positive and devastating outcome.
Emma gave birth to a healthy baby girl, but unfortunately, there was complications that could not be ignored and Gawain's wife died soon after giving birth. Gawain, heartbroken, knew that he was going to have to change his life for things were going to be drastically different. He had no plan of allowing his grief to consume him, for he wanted to be a good father to his newborn daughter. His inexperience could not be ignored, but he felt no shame in asking for help from his parents and his sister, who had children of her own.
In addition to this alternative lifestyle, Gawain decided to begin his dream of working as a blacksmith. While he traveled to town, he came across the city's best blacksmith, Tom. It did not take long for Gawain to become the blacksmith's apprentice. He worked closely with Tom, as they became rather good friends. He learned a great deal about weaponry and the art of building it. This was how he lived his life, until one tragic event would alter the course of reality. Tom was arrested and killed for escaping. This tragic event devastated Gawain as he lost his closest friend. Distraught but still in need of work, he open a shop in town. He wanted to fulfill his other dream, not only because he needed more money to care for his daughter, but also because his late wife wanted him to, and to share the skills that Tom had taught him.
With this determination, he continued Tom's work, opening a small little store, in Camelot city and officially became a solo blacksmith. He is just barley making it, as there are a lot of expenses. His reputation as a skilled blacksmith however is slowly spreading throughout the town. He travels back and forth quite a bit, though sometimes he will spend the night in his little shop since the journey -- though not too perilous -- can be tiring after a long days work. After this fulfillment of a final dream, Gawain is set in reality. He no longer fantasizes about all the potential opportunities the world has to offer. He has become more realistic, and has lost some of his optimism after his wife's death.
In addition to the work stress, Gawain is extremely paranoid for his daughter's safety. Because he does not always return home, and sleeps in his shop instead, he is always worried about her. He shelters her from the world of magic and does not want to be mixed up in any of it for it is illegal in Camelot and he is not willing to take any risks, especially after the recent discovery that his ancestors were practitioners of magic. He does not want that for his daughter. Presently, he is living between his shop in Camelot and his family's house in Willowdale. He has a five year old daughter who is the pride and joy of his life, and his work as a blacksmith to keep him busy as the days roll by. He wants to make his wife and daughter proud, and set a good example for his young child.
