(ooc somehow I missed the Mircea comment actually lol)
Uther knew that he had to tread delicately. He wanted to offer assistance, and he was aware of the Guard of Trust. Yet, he would have to think it over for a few days, to determine if he could spare such a detachment. He was pleased with her words about Morgana, it showed that she was not thinking only of herself.
As for the marriage,Uther believed that under most circumstances, an arranged marriage should go ahead, but this was clearly a case where it would endanger the kingdom. She had good reason to try to avoid going through with it. For all his traditional desires, Uther would not, were Arthur in such a case, allow such a union to proceed either.
"I am aware of this type of guard...a Guard of Trust it is called. I am also grateful for your concern about Morgana. I hope as well to find her safe. Remain in Camelot for a few days...I assume you are already being well accommodated? I must give the matter some thought and perhaps discuss it with the council before making a final decision. I will make every attempt to find a favorable solution, if it is at all possible."
Uther's word was law and final, but he was not averse to asking for advice when he felt it was warranted. He would consider the matter himself, and speak to his advisers, then render his final decision.

Uther had fairly well expected such a reaction. It was not that he did not value Lancelot's help, it was simply the kind of man the king was. He trusted few people as it was, and deception like Lancelot's made it hard to ever completely trust such a person. In Uther's mind, someone who acted in such a way once could easily turn on his sovereign again.
The king knew the truth of Lancelot's warning about Arthur. He knew that his son would have to respect his word once he was fully king again, but he also did fear driving Arthur away. He was uncertain if the prince would leave over anything else as he had threatened with the servant girl, but nothing was certain right now.
"For now, I shall act based on what I see. I am aware that Arthur is acting as the king right now. I will simply say that all of you are being closely watched. If I must act, I will do what is necessary for the kingdom, even if it angers Arthur. But if it does not occur, I will try to let rebuilding go as smoothly as possible."[//color]

Uther listened to Cenred's ramblings, but tried not to get provoked. He'd expected the barb about being a tyrant-he did not see himself as one, but he knew that many, including Cenred, did. In Uther's mind, he was at least doing the right thing, rather than looking to get rich like Cenred.
"The only ones executed are Camelot's enemies, those who pose a threat. I do not act rashly, I ensure that they are truly guilty before giving any orders." he retorted.
"I have no illusions about the dangers I face, and no kingdom is without its problems. The people may not have perfection, and there aren't constant smiles, but when times grow tough, that is when it is obvious they are loyal."
Cenred finally shut up, and Uther was glad, for the moment. He spoke up in agreement.
"Yes, let's. I've had enough of his ramblings. Making a peace accord with him is taxing, to say the least...as is anything else with him. We need to decide something soon."

Uther listened quietly, letting her speak her piece. She told him of a long journey, and he knew what she meant. Crossing the sea was always dangerous, between the unpredictable storms-none like the stories that were told of areas further south but still bad-and barbarians attacking whenever they could. Granted, northward travels were the worst, due to the threat of the Northmen, but opportunists and slavers worked wherever there was profit to be made.
She handed over the documents that proved her heritage, and he examined them. Kings like Uther weren't as learned as men like Gaius, since there were stewards to handle many items of business, but he was certainly able to read and write well enough to do what he had to. He finished and handed it back.
He was in a tough situation. He had to put Morgana and running the kingdom first, and Camelot was greatly taxed by both these days. He was not averse to assisting allies when he could, especially those with connections to his own court, but it would be difficult. Right now, however, he was still not entirely certain. He had to ask her more.
"You have come at a difficult time. I expect that you've heard since your arrival what has happened in Camelot. I wish to do what I can, but it may not be as much as would be possible under normal circumstances. What sort of help is it you wish, exactly? I understand what you have said, but am still not certain how we could help."

Uther listened, quiet, rather wishing he were alone again, but not lashing out. He didn't feel like causing a scene at the moment, even though Arthur wasn't here. He thought little of the servants, it was true, but he wasn't usually inclined to hit them-unless he got angry like he had when he thought Gwen had used magic. He'd had every right to then, in his mind, because of her insolence, but he tried not to make a habit of it on a day to day basis.
She spoke about the city rebuilding and Arthur, and he nodded occasionally. He did feel reason to have pride in his son, and he knew that Arthur's role as acting king would be a way for him to gain experience for the time when he would be king permanently. She tried to tell him not to worry greatly, but for him, it was impossible.
"I cannot help it. No one can understand the great weight upon the rulers' shoulders, since they are not royalty. I will trust him, but worry still."
She spoke of having Gaius come up. Uther's feelings were mixed, really. Gaius wouldn't think it a good idea to have as much alcohol as Uther desired, and would probably spend much of the time fussing over him. Still, Uther nodded, part of him not minding it. Gaius was still his closet friend, and he still might confide some things in him.

Uther, too, was pained. He also felt quite often like he was struggling, like he was doing his best to seem strong and healthy, but Arthur could see more of the truth. The prince likely saw the way he still moved and the fatigue in his eyes. Uther went out to the training field some days, and every session was quite short and rather exhausting. He ws not up to even what he had been during the tournament...there was no way he was participating in anymore very soon.
But there was also the matter of his drinking. He still shut himself up many nights and let the wine and ale he drank numb his mind and senses. He still wanted to forget, even if only for a time. He still took pains not to appear drunk during the day, when he might embarras himself and the kingdom, but nights were a different story.
"You do speak the truth about what is best for the kingdom. It simply pains me that I can do little. I feel that as king, I must take whatever part I can in leading the kingdom. I cannot accept feeling useless."

Uther knew that Nimueh was approaching this in such a way that she could annoy him as much as possible. She wasn't moving onto anywhere yet, but she was prodding him with getting him to mingle with the commoners and stay for a bit. Obviously, it wouldn't be too overly long, since he had only so much time before the spell wore off, but it still made him uncomfortable.
The men did calm down, and didn't make any attempts to attack them after Nimueh's words, and he did have to silently appreciate her quick thinking. He suspected it was more a way of getting herself out of a situation where she might need to use magic, however, than any concern for him. Then, though, she came up with a reason for him to be asking about the king, and Uther found himself on shaky ground as they waited for a reply. He was inwardly angry, wanting desperately to yell out and vent his annoyance, but he did not want to end up either arrested by his own men or treated ill because he was thought mad. He forced himself not to speak angrily, but he could not suppress a roll of his eyes directed at Nimueh. Hopefully, he thought, it wasn't seen or at least thought much of.
"That is usually the reason such things happen in this land."He hoped he was convincing, but at this point, he could not know for sure.

Uther still often thought about what had happened only weeks before Morgana's attack. Part of him did want to believe it was magic-there had been little sign of anything happening afterward, and Arthur was no longer acting strangely, even though the sorcerer had escaped. Uther had tried to be alert for any indications of trouble, but all of that had fallen by the way when he'd been overpowered and imprisoned. He was unsure now what was going on, if anything.
Uther wanted to question Arthur directly, but he didn't feel like pushing his son away further at this moment. Arthur was tense enough, and although he still felt entitled to use his authority as king, he wished to tread lightly and preserve what relationship he could with Arthur. He would have to be less direct in his approach.
"Yes, I believe so. At least the kingdom is in good hands while I recover. I shall be watching him, though. I cannot have decisions made that are not in the best interest of the kingdom. He had better continue making me proud."
He was quoting Arthur's remarks from before, making an indirect statement but not stating directly what he now had no evidence was true. He hoped he was right in his instinct on this matter.

Uther had slowly grown stronger as the months had gone by. Camelot had rebuilt itself, as it always had after disaster, although things would never be the same with Morgana gone. Uther was perpetually torn-he wanted to leave open the possibility of reconciliation, but he also feared more torment from her if he'd allowed her back into the kingdom. Ultimately, as acting king, Arthur had made the decision on her, however.
Things didn't go smoothly all of the time. Arthur was doing well as interim king, but Uther's temper often prevented him from avoiding arguments with his son. He often had to give his own opinion, and sometimes it resulted in a fight. Uther knew what the real problem was, however. He was restless. He wanted to return to his full duties as king. He was unable to see some of his own problems at this point, though, and his mind was still not back to full health. He was in a sort of denial, certain that he was ready, even though the truth was far from clear.
He decided that he had to speak to Arthur about it. He really didn't like it, having to ask about things, given his being accustomed to his word being law in the kingdom. That, admittedly, was what frustrated him the most, even if he wouldn't admit it to anyone else. He knew he wasn't *really* a 'puppet leader' as the term was usually meant, but he felt like a puppet sometimes, with Arthur pulling the strings now.
"How long must the current situation remain?he asked."I am stronger now. My health is improved. I wish to begin resuming some of my duties as king, if not all."

Uther was still feeling like prodding Lancelot a little. He still questioned his integrity and hoped he wouldn't suddenly turn against Camelot, since he'd deceived the kingdom so easily once already. His other actions did amount to a lot, but he also did not think he could ever fully trust a man who had done something like that. It gnawed at him and left him perpetually uneasy.
"I choose not to anger Arthur at this point by attempting to drive you out. The kingdom does not need its rulers battling each other when it is trying to rebuild. I make no promises, however, about what may happen when I am able to regain my full power as king. I do intend to return to full duties once my health is recovered."he said."I will not forget your actions in saving the kingdom, that is certain. But I can never forget treachery either. When someone deceives me in such a way, I cannot forget."

Uther realized his error after he'd already said it, when the guys got tough with him. He sighed, wishing he'd had a bit more tact. Most likely, it was the result of his mental state-he still wasn't thinking entirely clearly. Sadly, in doing so, he'd put himself in danger, and in this state, he couldn't have them arrested. He braced himself for a beating, but Nimueh stepped in.
She talked them out of thinking he was a spy, but true to her nature, annoyed him while doing so. She'd just thrown his statement about being set in his ways back at him, and he didn't like the name she'd come up with, though he assumed it was just a spur of the moment thing, all she could think of. He rolled his eyes at her, but couldn't argue it with her right now, not in front of other people.
Uther glanced at her for guidance, a hunch forming in his mind that she'd want him to pay and get out of there before he blew it, but he wasn't totally certain. They weren't the only ones in the bar, and he could conceivably still speak to some of the others, as long as he didn't make the same mistake twice.

Uther did not speak yet as she came forward and bowed down, showing the necessary respect. She was due respect herself, as royalty, and he would not have been surprised if she had not bowed. Visiting royals did still show proper deference,as he did expect, but few went as far as to bow down- but she chose to do so. He could see that she was dressed as expected for her rank, and she admittedly looked quite lovely, though this was not something he'd speak of. She wore the ring bearing her house's crest, and the scroll she carried was likely documentation of her lineage. In some ways, he thought to himself that she reminded him a bit of Morgana, and he felt a pang of sadness as his thoughts drifted to her. He had to push them away and focus on the task at hand.
Uther nodded his head to her."Greetings, Princess Yassia. I have heard about your difficulties during your journey...I am glad that you managed to arrive safely at last. You may speak...what is it you have come to ask?"

Uther knew that there would be little discussion of what he had just said, and he said nothing more about it. He still believed that he'd had reason to accuse and carry out sentence against her father, but like most children, she was reluctant to see it for herself. Morgana was a rare case; much of the time, children defended their parents even when guilt was obvious. But then, Morgana had probably been fueled by his lies which had gone on for so long.
His mind wandered to Arthur. He knew that the prince would need time to process everything that had happened, and that he was likely quite angry right now. He, like Morgana, was angered by finding out the truth about Morgana. Uther knew that their meeting would be tense and likely lead to harsh words, but it was necessary to speak with him on certain things. Uther would not fight Arthur's desire to act as king right now; he was in no position to rule while he recovered.
"Yes. He has done well under the circumstances of the past week. Morgana and Morgause sought to kill him, but he overcame great adversity to rescue both the kingdom and myself. I could not take more pride in him."

Uther did appreciate the wine, although she probably could not supply the amount he really wanted. He longed for the numbing forgetfulness of being thoroughly drunk, perhaps even passing out for a time. At least if he were unconscious, he'd be free from the despair and pain he felt. But he also had to keep telling himself that it wouldn't solve anything, that he needed to be clear-headed if he was to recover properly.
Oddly, he knew that the peasant girl could empathize with him-both had lost a lot in these situations. Of course, her father had been lost at his hand, but there was little to be done about that now. He had only done what he believed was necessary to protect the kingdom. Fortunately, he had no intention of bringing that up now. He might be dazed and not exactly clear headed but he wasn't stupid.
"It is appreciated. And so is your loyalty, despite...everything."he said. It was the closet he was coming to facilitating any arguments. He turned his attention to other matters"Tell me...how is Arthur? I have yet to see him. When you do, inform him that I would like to speak with him."

King Uther looked slightly worn as he prepared to hold audience in the great hall. The past few months had worn heavily on him, and he was pushing himself to exhaustion. He barely slept and some days he ate very little, intensely focused on finding Morgana. Anyone who might have a shred of information was questioned, and it took even less than usual for Uther to order an execution.
And yet, he still had to tend to the affairs of state. He would search for Morgana until his dying breath, but he could not leave Camelot to ruin to do so. This was a small matter compared to the most pressing affairs on his mind at the moment, but he still often found himself wishing he could somehow avoid dealing with these more trivial, in comparison, matters.
The girl was a noblewoman, the niece, apparently of Sir Leon, and had come to ask for help. Leon had asked for the audience on her behalf. She had a claim to the throne of her home country, but did not want to marry the husband arranged for her. Uther was as yet uncertain if he could help or not, but he'd agreed to the audience anyway.
She was announced, and as he waited to come forward, Uther thought about Arthur. He had plans to marry him to Princess Elena, daughter of his friend Lord Godwin, but he had no illusions his son would agree very easily. Children were so strong minded it seemed, and often in direct opposition to the wishes of their parents. He hoped it would come to the end he hoped for eventually. Sighing, he turned his attention to the task at hand.

Uther had to admit that he had less experience in this area than he like to say out loud. He had not come to the throne here as an heir, he had conquered it and made himself king. And in his home kingdom, Dunmonia, Uther had never been expected to take his father's place as king. That was the role of his older brother, Ambrosius. And with both him and Constans being older, Uther would have spent his days as a knight if he had not struck out on his own. He did think he could speak well now, however.
"You must find and keep confidence in yourself. That is how I succeeded in attaining my place as king. I conquered because I was confident that I could. You are of course not in that position, but readying yourself to take your place requires a similar confidence."
Uther knew that he and Arthur often had disagreements lately, perhaps even moreso than in the past, but he did know that his son's decisions almost always ended up being what was best for the kingdom. Thoughts of the recent incident with Princess Elena did enter his mind, but he recalled Lord Godwin's words that were his consolation for the failure-that Arthur had the makings of a great king. He listened as Arthur spoke.
"That is what will make you a success. Obviously, we do not agree on everything, and I am not always happy, but what is important is that Camelot is better for your choices, and that is what I see happening."

Uther struggled with his feelings of despair and powerlessness. He knew that it was for the good of the kingdom right now, but he hated feeling helpless and useless. The one thing that comforted him is that he knew it would not be permanent, at least not as long as he still had breath. Once he had recovered, he would assume his full duties as king again.
"I know it is for the good of the kingdom. And I do trust your judgement. You have learned well, and I have no reason to believe you will not do your best. I still hold to the hope, though, that the day will come when I will have regained sufficient strength that may return to my full duties as king. But until then, there is little choice, if we are to do what is best for Camelot."he said."Of course, the people will have to be informed, as well as the council. I do not yet even know if they have all survived. I would not be surprised if Morgana executed them all, although it was not public if she did."

Uther knew she was mocking him again, bringing up Arthur's recent moves and the simple fact that he was growing up. He tried not to let it get to him, wanting to avoid provoking her as much as possible. Still, he knew she had a point. The problem was basically conflict between new ways and old, between youth and an old man. It wasn't easy to change ways he was set in so long, that were common practice not just here in Camelot but in other kingdoms as well. He wondered if other kings had the same problems with their princes, and if he had been similar when he was young.
"yes"he said simply."I am simply set in my ways. I do not know, perhaps maturity will bring Arthur more wisdom. Or perhaps the change will still come, once I am gone and unable to stop it."
He was uneasy as he went into the building; it was obviously not a place he normally went to. He ordered a drink, swallowed his nervousness, and started to make himself speak and do what he'd come for. He wondered if he'd get a true answer from anyone or not.
"So...what do you think of our king? If I might ask."

Uther of course rarely said much to Arthur that was like this. He was stern and it was unsurprising when Arthur had admitted that he always felt unloved. Uther felt that if he didn't push the boy, often to his limits, that he would not do well when he was on his own. But, rarely, deeper feelings did make their presence known, usually quite subtly. This was a special occasion, and that was why the king was a bit more open than usual.
"I know that I rarely do. That I am often harsh, as I feel I must be. So, it is good to hear you speak that way."he said."You do still have much to learn, but it is obvious that you are well on the right path already. I am only sorry that your time will not come until mine has passed. I would find it good to see my legacy, to be able to watch you as king."The king, of course, had little inkling that he would have that chance within only months, but under the worst of circumstances.
