Uther wasn't happy to have to change, but there was no way around it. It was a new experience, as he'd never had to dress as a peasant. He was born a prince, even though he had not grown up prince of Camelot, so he had always lived and dressed as fine as possible. Even during battle campaigns, he was still attired in knght's garments, which were the clothing of nobility, under his armor.
Nimueh said she was going to change as well, and he couldn't suppress a remark at her.
"I shan't miss it"he commented. Then, almost as though he'd read her mind, he said"Just do not tell me you're posing as my wife. I could never bear the thought."

Uther was not surprised by Arthur's reactions. The prince would have to learn to trust him again, and it wouldn't be easy for Uther-especially with what he was still hiding. He felt the pangs of guilt every time he said that he had no more secrets, but he could not tell Arthur this final one. He could not induce what would certainly be his death at Arthur's hands.
"I do not expect you to trust me immediately. Or for some time to come. I do speak the truth, but I expect you are right, you must ultimately decide for yourself. I can only hope that you do hold to the right truths. You have never given me reason to doubt you before. I do not doubt that you will choose correctly about Morgause, you have seen for yourself what she can do." he said."I can only regain your trust day by day, demonstrating rather than simply saying."

The change was not without its downside. Uther's physical structure remained mostly unchanged, but he could feel the evidence of changes occuring outwardly. Itching,burning,pain...he had to fight the urge to claw his skin off while he waited to see if it would subside. He glared at Nimueh, tried to speak but it was too difficult right now, fearing she'd lied to him about poison, wondering what was going on. There was some degree of bone and muscle shifts, but they weren't drastic. A bit of weight loss, the change of his facial shape, the appearance of a beard. Not a long one, just something like what was commonly seen on many ordinary men.
"I was beginning to wonder if you'd lied. That was not without a degree of discomfort."He noticed the different sound of his voice, and it felt strange as he tried to adjust. He looked in the mirror as she said."It will do. I must quickly change clothing, though. I cannot wear the king's clothing when I am not supposed to be him."

Uther knew he was getting near the line; he would continue to try and find out what he could, both from Arthur and from any other sources he might locate, though that was a slim prospect, given it was a quest done alone. However, he knew that if he continued to push Arthur, he would only start arguing, and say even less that would prove useful. He didn't want to make Arthur feel he had to go silent about it altogther.
"That will be sufficient. I do trust you...I know that you would not want to do anything that would cause you further injury and incapcitate or debilitate you for any legnth of time. It is another of your good qualities, you always see that you are ready if you are called to fight."Uther did know that Arthur wouldn't want to show weakness around him, but he did trust his son's common sense for the most part.
[coloryellow]"I am glad to hear that. I know that you will keep it up"the king replied with a pleased look-one of the small half smiles that was usually as close as Uther got to any kind of smile at all, save on rare occasions.

Uther knew full well what would happen, and that was why his final secret had to remain a secret. Uther Pendragon was not a man who feared anything, except possibly yet another run in with Nimueh. But he'd been afraid for his life when Arthur had him on the floor at sword point, ready to run him through. He trusted Gaius not to speak of it, but he still, even now, worried about Morgause and Morgana. No doubt one sister would tell the other what she knew, and they would both attempt to use it against Arthur. And Morgana would need little provocation to strike a fatal blow to Uther. She would love to see Arthur be the one to do it, would gloat over it for the rest of her life.
"That is why I do not want anymore secrets"he lied."It is obvious that they only make things far worse when finally revealed. I do not want to die hated by both of my children."
"Speaking of such things, I know that Morgause and Morgana will now both try to alienate us all the more, to turn you against me. I hope you will not listen to whatever lies they spin. Both of them twist the truth and use it to poison minds. But it is what I say that is the truth, at least in the future, though it has not always been in the past."

Well some are real. Mercia was a real kingdom. That's the only one though I think. Cenred was a real king, but IDK which one they're basing him off of. There were two Cenreds.

Uther was getting increasingly annoyed and his temper was, as always, getting the better of him. He felt the rage growing stronger inside of himself and it was making him fight and struggle more. In his mind it was more proof of what he had said many times before. No one could understand his position as king because they were not in that position. He had no great desire to kill children or stop people from being healed. That was not why he did what he did.
"It does not matter who is using it or what it is used for. It is all the same. It corrupts and destroys. Even if it is intially used for good, evil is what will eventually manifest in the end."he said darkly.
"The only solution is to stop potential evil before it can rise. I have no desire to kill innocents or stop healing. But ALL magic is evil, and I can make no exceptions. No one can understand my position because no one else is king. I do not expect anyone else to understand."
He was uncertain now about Morgana, and what to believe. It could be magic, and he still hung onto that theory, but nothing was certain now, and he had to admit that, even if he did not yet want to let go of his original belief.
He next spoke about what he knew she was going to hurl at him, the belief that he was a hypocrite, while she was no better.
"I know you will probably speak of hypocracy. But you condemn my actions and then kill anyone who does not pledge loyalty to you. They did nothing wrong, yet you took their lives. So do not speak of such to me!"

INteresting...I can't wait to add more to Uther's family tree. I've been wondering too which side he'll be on. More stuff courtesy of Livejournal...unsure if any or all will prove true eventually or not. - Lancelot and Percival are only in the two parter and then are leaving, but Gwen's brother and Gawain are to remain on a semi regular basis. - Morgana and Morgause are alive and well, with Emilia apparently being seen on set filming scenes for part two, so that long awaited REAL showdown between Merlin and Morgause may still happen and with a much bigger budget behind it this year, maybe we will get some real magic shown from Merlin. - Gwen takes on a newer role to show she is somthing other than the love interest, but at the same time Merlin is still stuck as a servant adn Arthur is still oblivious to his talent and that Merlin has been pulling the strings behind the scenes. Remember at the coronation flashback / dream of Gwen being crowned that Merlin was still shown in servant clothes, so Merlin being stuck in the role as servant throughout this series may be a mainstay. - Morgana is still a regular but Morgause being kept on only as a to pop up now and again as she is ' damaged ' by what Merlin did to her in season three's ending. - Mordred and the Druids and the whole Emrys plotline to be the bulk of the storylines in the later half of the season with the possibility of someone FINALLY connecting Merlin to Emrys. Why are Lance and Percival leaving again? I bet Lance's is because of Santiago's pilot...

Uther wasn't going to trust her easily by any means, obviously. He was loathe to accept the drink from her, and felt a great sense of risk in doing so. However, at the same time, he knew somehow that she was telling the truth about not poisoning him. She could, easily, but it would be too easy to do. She'd want to kill him with more flair and inventiveness, and torment him first.
"I do not trust you at all, but somehow I know you are telling the truth. You would indeed find killing me this way too easy. And it would deprive you of taking pleasure in torturing me as you so enjoy. I know you well enough to know you wish my death to be slow so that you can take as much pleasure as you can tormenting and paining me first." he replied.
Uther knew this was going to be risky. He would likely lose control of himself eventually, and become frustrated at the way he was being treated. And if he forgot himself and started yelling about being king, he'd be deemed a madman.
"How long will the effects last? I would ask assurance that you will not trap me in another form, but it would mean nothing from you." , he asked, then he started to drink.

"I still think it a bit odd. You are not one to tire easily, usually. You are strong and capable, even when the challenge is a difficult one. It is good that you recovered quickly, but it could still be a bad sign. Perhaps you are just beginning to get sick...you should have Gaius check you over as a precaution. " said Uther. He was beginning to dismiss the idea of magic, unless Gaius could prove otherwise, but he knew full well that an oncoming cold or illness could weaken a person to where they would have bouts of tiredness and then recover for a while.
Arthur asked how things had been here while he was gone. Uther was happy for his son's concern, Arthur always thought of the kingdom before himself. Or, most of the time anyway.
"Everything was fine here, though I am glad for your concern...it is good that you think of your people no matter what you are doing or how far away you are. It is another mark of a good king."

Uther listened to her words, remaining relatively quiet until she finished. She saw him as liking to hear himself talk, and it was not a surprise coming from her. Perhaps he did say a bit too much, but it was not unlike the actions of a wild animal. He was weak, and doing his best not to show it. He hated weakness, and hated that he wasn't at his full stregnth, even though there was little he could do with Nimueh, even at total health.
"Yes, I know that he could. I can only hope that he does not."If he did, Ygraine's death would be for nothing. He would lose the will to live himself if he lost Arthur, especially after what had happened with Morgana. He glared when she called it luck, bu but even he did not know what had really happened, if it was luck or skill or what, so he said nothing about it.
"And no, I have not forgotten. I know never to trust you at all, but I still wish to do what was agreed on. I wish to see who is truly right in their opinion." He was confident in his, but a small part of him was nervous; if he lost out to her, he would be humiliated and even more depressed than before.

Her arrival gave Uther rather mixed emotions. He hated the way she slipped past his guards and left him powerless to get rid of her or stop whatever she might intend to do. He could still recall the late night 'encounter' and her forcing herself on him. Oh, she hadn't done anything involving the removal of clothing, but he still didn't like it.
"It is you who cannot be trusted. And it is not the guards themselves. You take great pleasure knowing that neither I nor my guards can stop you from getting in here whenever you please."He didn't add his displeasure about her being able to do whatever she pleased to him, but that didn't need to be spoken of. It was quite discernable in his expression.
"I knew from the beginning that your talk of Arthur being dead was all lies. You were simply enjoying the effect it was having on my mental state. Just as you're certainly enjoying yourself now, gazing at the effect the ordeal has had on me. But, I will recover before too long. I refuse to allow Morgause,if she still lives, and Morgana any satisfaction of believing their actions lead to any permenant effect on my health."or to my deathhe thought, but did not say it aloud. He had not escaped unscathed, it was all too true. But, in his mind it was what he had believed for so long already:Magic users had again attempted to destroy him and Camelot, and as always, they had failed, just as they always would."This incident only serves to stregnthen my resolve that magic shall not prevail against Camelot."

Uther obviously did have another secret, but he would never reveal that one willingly. He still vividly recalled Morgause's use of magic to turn Arthur against him. She had revealed the secret of Arthur's birth, and the prince had nearly killed him before Merlin had talked him out of it. He had no choice but to take that secret to his grave, or Arthur would send him there himself. He would not be able to defend his seeming hypocracy, or to get Arthur to understand that it was his birth that had made him see the evil of magic. However, that would make it appear as though he wished Arthur had never been born, which was not so. It would be a situation he would never be able to explain satisfactorily, and one he would have to see die with him-and Gaius. He wished Morgause were dead as well, but he did not know for sure as yet.
"No,there are not."he replied firmly."That is a good thing, because it would, indeed, bring our relationship to ruin."

He did indeed feel extremely unhappy as she brought her lips to his. His stomach churnend and he wanted to throw up. The physical emotions were there, of course, he was merely a human and unable to stop them. But the dislike overruled any desire he might have at the moment. Inside, he was afraid. If she chose to take this further, to go all the way as it were, he wouldn't be able to stop her. It was the feelings of powerlessness he'd had for most of this encounter intensified several times. He knew she was doing it purposely to get at him, to toy with his feelings and make him suffer. He made a muffled sound as she kissed him, struggling slightly, but not as intensely as earlier; he knew the pointlessness of wasting energy on her.
"I would not give you the satisfaction." he replied, partly because it was true and partly to cover up the churning feelings inside himself at the moment."You intend to go as far as you can with this, am I right? You will extract as much humiliation from me as you can."

Uther had been busy when he'd been informed of the new arrivals, but he did make time to tend to buisness as soon as he was able. He was indeed not known to be terribly generous on many occasions, but at the same time, he also respected the treaty between the two kingdoms.
The lady's name was Selena, and she was a niece of Bayard, making her a noble along with her knight brother. She'd already met Arthur, he was aware, and now she was having audience with the king. He saw no reason not to help her, or to anger Bayard if at all possible. He nodded a welcome, giving her the respect her status should bring her, before he was seated on his throne.
"Greetings, Lady Selena. I hope your stay has been pleasant so far. I'm aware that you have already met Prince Arthur; he spoke well of you. What is it you have come to ask?

Uther had been quite looking forward to Nimueh's proposition being undertaken. He would be on his guard; nothing could make him trust her at all, but he wanted to do what she said, to go out among the people and see what they thought. He believed it might be a chance to prove her wrong, to see that he was well-liked, though he knew he must be prepared to deal with the inverse, should the results be less than satisfactory.
However, Arthur's return had put a stop to Nimueh's plan; Uther was restored to his rightful place and Camelot was his once again. He wondered if she would return in the aftermath, if she was still intending on sending him out in disguise or not.

Uther listened, then nodded. He had no doubt that she would be careful and that she wouldn't push things too far. He had to fight the urge to be with her all the time, to want to see her and know that she was really there. He was still afraid that he might awaken and find it had all been a dream, as he had many times before. He still couldn't believe she had truly returned alive.
"All right. And as I said, there will be a feast later to celebrate your return. I know that all will be happy to see you again."he said, as he watched her take her leave.

Uther honestly wasn't certain one way or the other. He had struggled with that unceasingly ever since learning of Morgana's magic. It was a situation that would not have left him an easy out. The law demanded death, and if he did not uphold the law, he would be seen as weak and ineffective. But, he could not bring himself to raise a hand against Morgana either. He knew that if Camleot was retaken, something would have to be done, but he did not yet know what.
He knew that her words were true, and it was not easy to answer them. He often wished that he had been able to find a way to do both. He had hated not being able to tell Morgana the full truth, but had indeed feared for his reputation and the possibility that Morgana herself would cause trouble for Arthur.
"I do only what I must to protect Camelot. Magic of any kind is dangerous, and it is better that a few should die than many. As for my faults with you,I cannot change the past, but I did things that I regret. I will not deny that I made mistakes.he said."I do not think, however, that you realize that she may be using you for her own ends. She cannot take the throne, that is obvious. So she needs you to take the position of power. I only hope it does not backfire on you."

Uther listened, though he would be surprised if he knew the full truth, the fact that she could never talk to him. He hoped that she would confide any worries in him, but he had no way of knowing how angry her worries would make him if he knew about them. He made ready to take his leave, not wanting to overtax her or prevent her getting her rest.
"I hope that is true. I loathe seeing you ill at ease; if anything troubles you, I want to correct it quickly."he said, and moved toward the door.."I will go now; I do not want to keep you from your rest, no. And I will certainly tell Arthur that you wish to see him. Good bye, and rest well."
