Uther listened as she asked if he could give her advice. At first, she chose to hold back until they had finished their meal, and Uther had agreed. After they had finished eating, he waited, knowing she would begin to tell him what she was wondering about, and she did indeed. He listened, mostly quiet, as there was much she had to say. She was concerned about accepting her own place as ruler of a kingdom, now that her father had contacted her.
"I can understand your fear. Ruling a kingdom is no easy task, and it can be very frightening. I grew up prince of another land, and conquered this one, but I recall how I felt as I went about beginning the true task of ruling, after I had established my claim as king. But, if you believe in yourself, and do your best to uphold confidence in your abilities, and ensure that you have adequate counsel with those who truly have your kingdom's best interest in mind, you will do fine."It was prudent not to trust anyone easily, even one's closet friends, but no one ruled without advisors, and Uther valued good ones like Gaius, even though he wasn't an official advisor.
"I believe that those of us who are born royalty are born with a duty to our lands."he said."I believe that the only honorable path is to accept your place on the throne. Duty to one's kingdom is the most important thing of all for a ruler; it must be placed above all else. Your people look to you to follow in your father's footsteps and protect the kingdom as he did before. I do not believe you should let your father's legacy die with him."

Uther was still feeling a rush of emotions as he was helped to his bed so that Gaius could tend to him. He knew that he didn't have any life-threatning injuries, but the physician would need to tend to his flesh wounds and broken bones and see that he was stable after the ordeal he'd been through. For Uther, it was also a time to talk, to begin coming to terms with everything that had happened. He was still dazed, still finding her betrayal hard to believe.
"Was I truly so blind to the reality of how she felt?"he asked Gaius."Or is it truly magic, at the hand of Morgause? I do not know what to believe. I do not want to believe that she is lost to me forever, but I do not know if there can be any other outcome."

Uther did feel the verbal blows of her words, even though he tried to shake them off. He had long rationalized and explained away, had twisted things in his mind, even though he would never admit it, to convince himself that he was in the right. He truly believed that Camelot's safety was being assured by his actions. He did pay attention quickly, though, when she made her offer. He was torn for a few moments, fully aware of the power of her magic, and the consequences that could follow. But he was also eager to prove her right, to show her the truth, or what he believed was true in his mind.
"I know what damage your power can do, what problems can be inflicted by agreeing to your offers. But, I also want nothing more than the chance to prove I am right, to witness the truth. Let us see what the people truly think."

Uther listened, hoping she would eventually open up more. He dislike seeing her uneasy, though she was fairly relaxed right now. He knew that she had been through a long, difficult ordeal, and that one did not simply recover from such a thing overnight. It took months, sometimes years, depending on the person. But he would do all he could to help her along.
"Yes, some of that burden can be. But I will always worry for you. You mean a great deal to me, and it would destroy me if anything happened to you."he replied.
She said that she did not want to keep him and that she might go for a walk."It is no trouble. But thank you. Yes, of course...it might do you some good. Just please do not overexert yourself. Be sure and take it easy for a while."

Uther was dining with his current guest. She was a princess herself, but exiled in a sense, no longer a claimant to the throne of her country, Kentura. Only her mother was royalty, her father had been a knight of Camelot, and her mother had fled here after the breakup of the marriage and to avoid being executed for her affair. Uther had been a bit annoyed to learn of the knight's affair; it wasn't entirely honorable of course. However, Uther did know quite well what love did to young men, and as long as her father remained loyal, he wouldn't drive him out of Camelot.
Lisa's father had fought well in a recent battle, and was to be commended for it later that day. For now, they ate and Uther did his best to be polite.
"I do hope everything is to your liking."he said.

Uther knew that her words were true, and it hit him harder every time she spoke like that. Not that he'd ever admit it. Uther didn't want to see himself as being hypocritical. He believed that bending or breaking the rules was necessary at times, if it could be justified in his mind. He'd allowed magic use to save Morgana because he could not, would not lose her. He felt he was entitled to act as he saw fit in order to protect the kingdom.
He was shaking his head and still growling a bit, not liking her speech of the truth.
"I am not completely without honor. I maintain integrity as much as possible. Things have occured, but I feel that I must do whatever is necessary to protect my kingdom. If rules most sometimes be bent or broken, so be it."
"And I am not completely hated by my people. I have brought them peace! They lived in fear before I conqured the land and ended the fighting. Now they are happy and prosperous."

Uther listened, his instincts still alert, but still remaining calm at the same time. Keeping a clear head wasn't always what he was best at, but he knew he had to try not to let his temper flare until he was sure something was wrong. It was obvious he was uneasy, but at least he wasn't yelling at anyone yet. For now, he tried to discern how he could find out more.
"I can understand how that could happen. The pain does not go away easily in my experience. Moving on can be very difficult."he said."I hope she is doing all right, despite her ordeal."
Sasha spoke of her mother being glad to be back in Camelot. He nodded, able to understand that as well."Yes, it is always nice to return home after a long absence. I hope that she will be able to enjoy her stay, to find a bit of happiness despite her despair."

Uther knew how that could happen, though he was still going to order things checked over. He couldn't take any chances of either Morgana or anyone else falling and getting hurt if something was in a position to cause a problem for a careless person. It was often hard not to be rushing someplace in the castle, and one couldn't be too careful.
"I hope everything is all right. And that you will not be afraid if you wish to talk."Uther said. He couldn't know, of course, that she could decidedly not tell him her problem.
"I will ensure that he knows of your gratitude. You were indeed most fortunate to have access to his expertise. And if he were unable to help, I would have searched until I found someone who could. And although I will do as you ask, I will still have the stairs checked.
"You are certain that you are feeling all right? I should let you rest, if you are."

Uther could obviously not read her mind, but she was right in so many ways about him. He likely would have been overwhelmed and enraged if he knew the full truth of what both Morgana AND Arthur had done right under his nose, without his knowledge. He had to have some intelligence, obviously, to run the kingdom, but was still blind to a lot of things around him.
His own mind was still drewlling on the day's events, and enjoying the relief of knowing that Morgana was home safe.He had run himself ragged the last year, pushing hard from dawn until dusk and sleeping a few hours at a time, as little as possible in order to oversee the search for her. He had refused to stop, had intended to keep searching and fighting even if it killed him.
"As have I, and as have we all missed you greatly."he replied." I know that Arthur has missed you, and the entire castle. All of Camelot has been worried for your safety and all are glad that you are safe. If you had been lost, it would have been a great blow to all of us. I am certin that all are relieved greatly tonight, not just I, although naturally I am most of all."He returned the squeeze before the release of hands.

"I knew there would be a price, but I assumed it would be my life. I never meant for Ygraine to be the price. As for Vivian, I cannot change the mistakes that were made...I would never wish not to have Morgana, but I cannot change the wrongs, either."he said.
Her comments about Morgana being the rightful heir made him angrier."ARTHUR is the rightful heir to the throne! I care nothing for what either you or Morgana say, I will NOT believe he is dead unless a body is brought to me. Until then, I believe he lives, and he WILL find a way to take the city back.!"
Morgause went on, and Uther repeated what he'd said to so many before."I cannot make allowances based on age. Anyone with magic is dangerous, and I cannot allow a potential threat to become a definate threat. I am not the savage one! I am protecting my kingdom by doing what must be done. I take no pleasure in what I must do, no delight in it!
He was straining and raging again, even though he couldn't possibly get out of the chains."If you think I will beg for mercy or give you the pleasure of crying in pain, you are mistaken. I will die before I submit to anyone. It matters now how great the pain is, I will NOT give anyone satisfaction!"

"That is possible, I suppose. They may have believed that such a loss would weaken me enough so that more harm could be done. But, they greatly misjudged how I would react. They should have known that I would become enraged and hunt them down until every last one was dead. And they should have known that you were far too formidible to ever be held for long." he said.
"I would never give up on you. You mean far too much to me. I would fight for you until my dying breath." He alone knew the true reason for those feelings, and he could never tell her, but all that was important was that she knew how strongly he felt.

Uther listened, unable to detect her deception, her emotional play doing its intended job. He felt a mixture of sadness and anger as she spoke, and he wished that something could have been done earlier, that he could have gotten to her sooner. He knew that things could have gotten much worse, though he did not want to think it.
"You did well...I know that no one could keep you from escaping at one point or another. I am only relieved that it did not get as bad as it could have; such men as these are ruthless and often anything but gentlemanly to a lady. I swear that they will be hunted down and brought to justice for this. Their lives will be forfeit."
"I never stopped searching, and would have gone to the ends of the earth if it became necessary."he said.
There was one thing that was nagging him, and he spoke of it next. "The only thing I fail to understand is why no contact was ever made. Usually, bandits capture someone of your status to collect a ransom, yet no demand was ever made to me."

Uther still did not know how it had happened. He had a suspicion that Gaius had used magic, and he had sworn the physician to silence as a precaution-his enemies could not know that he had essentially broken his own law like that. He would be seen as a hypocrite and attacked for it relentlessly. But Uther didn't care; there were times when laws had to be broken, when it meant the life of someone who meant so much to him. He couldn't save Ygraine, and he wasn't going to lose Arthur or Morgana, either one.
She looked much better for what she'd been through-less pale and her eye were more clear now. She still had bruises and probably a hurting head, but there was nothing now that looked terribly serious. SHe would have to rest for a time, and take things slowly, but he was beginning to relax.
"It is not of your doing. You did not set out to harm yourself and cause me worry. I am only very relieved that you are all right. I am quite curious, though...what caused you to fall down the stairs? You are usually quite nimble,...if there is something in need of repair, something that made you lose your balance, it must be tended to immediately."He did not think it could be an intruder; the guards would have caught anyone trying to enter the castle who did not belong there or have buisness. He suspected something might have been damaged and caused her to lose her balance. If so, it needed to be repaired quickly.

Uther still kept rationalizing, was still reluctant to believe that Morgana was doing this of her own free will. Part of him realized that, but another part believed it had to be magic. It had to be Morgause, her half sister, poisoning her and turning her against him. Uther was still convinced that somehow, he could save her and set her free.
"I know that it is not your fault you are doing this. I know that it is *her* doing. Morgause. She has poisoned your mind and used sorcery to blind you to the truth. She turned you against me and is controlling your mind to make you do her bidding. I will rescue you, if I havce to die to do so. She WILL die and I will set you free, I swear it. You will not see it now, I know. You will not believe that she is responsible, but I know the truth. You will be free, and she will pay with her life. First she attempts to poison Arthur and now you."

She looked better now that she had been seen to by Gaius and bathed and gotten at least a bit of rest. There had been many people concerned and wanting to wish her well, though few had been allowed in of course. Uther hoped she could rest now, because the night would be filled with a feast in honor of her return.
"I cannot tell you how relieved I am to have you safely back. Gaius has told me that you are uninjured, and that is an even bigger relief...you are extremely fortunate. I am very interested to hear of your escape, though I do not want to pressure you if it is too disturbing for you to discuss. I would not want to make you distraught after what yo have experienced."

Uther sighed. "Yes, that is true, I know. If you did indeed see this quest in your vision, you did not choose it. I was simply burdened by it...I was aware of how very dangerous it was, and feared something had gone wrong, that something had occured to decieve you and lead you to your death, into a quest you could not survive. I know that you will not back down from any challenge or obstacle; you do your best to achieve your goals. I feared that someone else may have tried to use magic to take advantage of this nature, and that you had not recognized it. It was difficult to believe that such a quest could be the one truly revealed to you."
What Uther could not escape was the fact that Arthur looked tired and almost draine in a way. He was relatively healthy and didn't seem ill, but still did not seem at full strength either.
"You're certain that you are unharmed in any way?"he asked."You look tired...perhaps moreso than is usual after a long journey or a fierce battle. Did anything unnatural or strange happen to you during the quest?"

The peace talks were well underway, and aside from King Olaf, most of the parties involved got along fairly well with Uther. There were naturally a lot of different viewpoints, and some arguing did break out now and then, but Uther still felt that things were going to go fairly well. The only king making things difficult was the same one who ALWAYS made things difficult for Uther: Cenred.
Cenred was cocky and overconfident in Uther's opinion. He was fairly young and thought he was so great with his black horse and leather clothes and foreboding castle. He was always getting his men into border clashes with Camelot's troops, and anyone who crossed the border did so at their own peril. Uther had been extremely worried when he found that Arthur AND Morgana had gone into Cenred's lands to help Ealdor after Cenred's refusal. They'd been lucky that he hadn't captured both and either executed them or demanded a high ransom for their return.
Cenred had been doing a lot of the arguing at the actual talks, and even between times, he didn't hesitate to butt heads with Uther when he could. Uther wasn't pleased whenever he crossed paths with him. They were always like two male animals, sizing each other up, both more than willing to take each other out if given the chance. They didn't dare do it here, but it didn't stop them from verbally sparring.

He listened, but was trying his best not to let her lies affect him. It was no different than what he dealt with day to day, really. No one could understand his position as king and the decisions he faced, the responsibility that rested on his shoulders as ruler of the kingdom. He took no pleasure in executions and taking lives. He was not a bloodthirsty killer. He did only what he had to to protect his people and ensure their safety.
"I did not lie, not about that at least. I knew there would be a price for Nimueh's help in concieving Arthur. But Ygraine was never to be part of it. It was my life that was to be taken for Arthur's, not Ygraine's. I realized with her death how dangerous and destructive magic is. It corrupts all those who practice it and brings only destruction and evil." he said."And it matters not the age of the user. Anyone who uses magic is dangerous. They are either already a threat to the kingdom, or they will become a threat. Either way, they must be dealt with. No one can understand my position because no one else is in it. I cannot allow evil to destroy this kingdom and its people! That is the true filth, the evil that would destroy everything I have worked for. I conquered this land and worked to make it what it is today. I will not have that ultimately be for nothing."

Uther was feeling a strong mix of emotions. He was tempted and repulsed at the same time. She was trying to tempt and entice him, and he knew it. For a moment, he had to wonder why, given that they were enemies, but he knew full well that she would do anything to make him uncomfortable and be able to watch his shame and regret later on. She was hoping he'd lose control to his primal instincts and be unable to help what followed. Uther was struggling against it as much as he could. He didn't like the fact that his body language was showing a sort of defeat, but he couldn't help it much.
"You revile me. You're preying on urges that will not be controlled easily. Then you will watch my regret and shame when all is said and done." he said with a sigh.
They were within inches of each other now, and he knew that if she took initiative to bring her lips to his, that he would spiral out of control all the more from there.

Uther had been seriously concerned for Arthur during this quest. He'd chosen an extraordinarly difficult one, one that his chances of completing were slim at best. He'd pleaded with the boy to choose another quest, as he weas sure this had ment certain death, but Arthur had refused to change his mind.THe king had feared for his son's life every moment that Arthur had been gone. And yet, somehow, the prince had returned, the trident in his hands. Uther could hardly believe it.
Uther had barely been able to contain his joy and pride as Arthur handed over the trident. It was obvious he'd not gone through this quest without injury, but he was healthy overall and safe in the castle.
"I still have difficulty believing that you were successful."he said."I feared that you were acting foolishly, that you were certain to die if you undertook this quest. And yet, you did not fail. You have once again exceeded my expectations."
