Uther recognized her strategy; he had known for a while now what she was doing. She was wearing at him, trying to break him down to the point of submission. He growled, his pride still driving him very much. She was right in her words about him being tempted. His mind was torn many ways, and there was no easy solution to his predicament that would not be difficult and painful, unless his hopes about Arthur were true.
If he resisted and stayed, he would die, either at Morgana's hand, or starved and tortured. If he accepted Nimueh's offer, he would be nothing but a hypocrite. He was frustrated and overwhelmed, still straining now and then and growling at his own turmoil. His mind also recalled once again the past, and although he was not foolish enough to want to be intimate with her again, the memory remained, muddying things itself.
"If I accept, I would be a hypocrite. I would be embracing the very thing that has caused me such pain and anguish. It would be foolhardy of me to become entangled with the very force that has already taken so much. And most importantly, I would lose all credibility with the people. A king must stand firm, even in the face of hardship and suffering. His integrity must be beyond question, and if he yields to temptation, goes against his convictions, he is not worthy of anyone's trust or respect. I may be down here, and Morgana may see herself as queen, but I am still the only true king here. If I die, then I die true to myself, and my kingdom."

Uther returned her gaze, his own senses still studying her. He was intent, but he hoped not so intent that he made her uneasy or came accross as rude. He would stop at nothing if he knew he was in danger, but without any sure sign of a threat, he needed balance as it were. To discern if he were at risk while at the same time, not offending her unncessarily and staining his reputation.
He was, to be truthful, most suspicious of her mother, but he knew that there could be many things going on here. She could have knowledge of a plot, or be working with her mother, or be planning something herself. Or, it could be just as she said, although he had his doubts. Her mother had seemed cold earlier, not happy at all, and that kept him suspicious.
"I see. She seemed a bit...distant...earlier. As though she were bothered by something. I hope she does not remain so. I always hate to see our guests not enjoying themselves. I simply hope it is not a sign of trouble to come."
That was the king's way of saying he hoped she wasn't intending to try and harm him. There was no way to know if Sasha knew anything, but he had to see.
(yeah it does)

Uther had expected Morgause to come and taunt him, just as Morgana had. His current situation was too good for either girl to pass up, both in the sense of verbal taunts and the possible physical torment he knew might follow. Morgana's visits were the worst-Uther wanted desperately to break through to her, and he never stopped trying, never stopped pleading with her to see reason. He hoped still that it might just be Morgause's magic clouding Morgana's mind, but he couldn't be sure.
"You are responsible for all of this. First you poison Arthur's mind against me, and then you poison Morgana with your magic. She would not act in such a way were she in her right mind. And you shall pay for it. I may not be in position to strike back right now, but Arthur is still out there. He would die before he stopped trying to rescue me, and I know that he will do his best." he said.
"And, some may think me brutal and tyrannical, but my duty is to my kingdom. I will do what I must to prevent Camelot from being destroyed by magic."

Uther was still in a state of shock over what had taken place. He had been degraded and humiliated, essentially trampled over by a power he had no means of fighting against. He had been put in chains in his own dungeon while Morgana forced Geoffrey to crown her as queen. With the Cup of Life, the forces she'd gathered were essentially immortal and Uther's men had been powerless.
He was surprised that he even still lived. He'd expected Morgana to kill him immediately, to further ensure her place as queen. But as time went on, he understood more and more why she did not kill him. Arthur was still alive, still out there, his only hope of being rescued and of Camelot being reclaimed. Morgana wanted to torment him by keeping him alive until she was certain Arthur was dead. It was her way of showing him just how powerless he was.
Uther was also concerned about Morgause, given that she had powerful magic. He knew little of her, but he did know that she wanted him dead, and he could not predict what she might do while he waited down here. Morgana would order him kept alive, but she likely would have no qualms about torturing him in the meantime.

Uther had expected that Sasha would join him for dinner. It was only proper given her status that she would eat from his table. Also as was normal, Arthur and Morgana were there, although Uther secretly hoped thy would retire before long and allow him some privacy. It was difficult to ask questions and try to discern the information he was looking for when he was being watched constantly. Thankfully, they did both leave for other things, leaving only Uther and Sasha at the table.
The king had been unable to escape the nervousness Sasha had expressed earlier, as he had carried out the ceremony for her mother. It had made him curious, and he wanted to know more. He did not care to get involved in family squabbles, but if she was nervous about something her mother might try in a sense of trying to harm him or anyone else in the castle, he would need to know of it.
"Are you all right, my lady? You seemed nervous during the ceremony earlier."he asked.

Uther still could not believe what had just happened. That his own daughter could so brutally betray him like this. She had forced him to his knees in front of everyone and had ripped the crown from his head. His own guards were all but helpless because the invaders were somehow enchanted. Uther suspected the Cup of LIfe, but he wasn't sure.
He had been hauled down here and his royal symbols stripped off of him-his cloak, his pendant, everything that marked him as king-and he'd been secured in this cell. His hands were chained and when his own guards had tried to help, they had been killed. He screamed a couple of times, yelling her name in anger, but she had not answered at all. He was surprised he even still lived. Obviously Morgana wanted to torture him more before he died.
Arthur was still out there, somewhere, and that was the only hope he still had. If Arthur could free him, he would ensure the people were never fully loyal to Morgana. They would have a chance to regain the kingdom. If the prince died, his chances of gaining freedom and retaking Camelot would die with him.

Uther felt as though a burden had been lifted from him when he had been told that Morgana had been found and was coming home, safe and alive. For months he had searched for her, greatly fearing what might have happened to her and if she was even alive. She had been ill and near death when her sister had taken her, and the king had felt himself going nearly insane from worry about her.
Now, she was back in the castle, and he had been able to greet her and hold her and know that she was physically there, that she was really back. No one would ever know the real truth of why he cared so deeply for her, but he knew that all of Camelot would be happy that she was safe. She seemed uninjured, which ws fortunate, but she had obviously been through much during her absence.
Uther was eager to speak to her more extensively after she had taken care of her immediate needs, and he knocked on the door to her room, waiting for her to answer.

Uther hadn't been willing to lose Morgana again. Not after so recently getting her back safe and being able to know that she was alive after three months of uncertainty. He didn't know how the incident had happened, but the injury had been grievous and she'd been certain to die, according to Gaius. It was not something Uther would accept willingly.
He knew that his order to use magic if necessary made him a hypocrite, and he didn't care. No one outside of he and Gaius would ever know, and he would not stand by and watch Morgana die. He would do whatever it took to save her, just as he would have when Arthur lay dying. He had been so depserate that he ahd opened up to Gaius about the truth, even though he had intended to carry that secret to his death.
It had not been something he'd wanted to happen, and he'd known that allowing Vivian to seek comfort with him was wrong, but he had been unable to stop what had happened. Gorlois never questioned whether or not she was his until she was ten years old. Uther had been pained at having to arrange his friend's demise, but he was too aware of the scandal that would arise if his secret were discovered.
And, much as he would like to have told Morgana the truth, he kept it from her for the same reason. Besides, he feared her, even though he would never admit it, and feared what she might do to Arthur. She was so much like him that it frightened him at times. He recalled telling her at Gorlois's grave what she had inherited from her father, and though she had thought he spoke of Gorlois, he really spoke of himself.
Uther did not know how, but Gaius had been able to help her, and she was alive and healing. He'd been anxious to talk with her and make sure she was okay. That was why he now came to her room, gently knocking and nudging the door open, looking in to see how she was doing now.
"I do not have words to express how frightened I was...I thought I would lose you, and I could not bear that, not after fearing I'd lost you before."he said.

He couldn't deny the fact that she was always getting the best of him, and that she was powerful enough to dominate him while he could do nothing to stop her. Admitting it, though, was a whole other story. Uther's ego and pride wouldn't allow him to admit easily that he wasn't in control in this situation, at least not in words. The struggle was showing on his face, even though he said very little.
Uther recognized the other feelings moving back and forth. As a young man, Uther had romanced quite a few women-he'd been something of a player, in modern terms. He had never cheated in any way on Ygraine, she was everything, his heart and soul. But before Ygraine, Vivian had happened...and so, from time to time, had Nimueh. Those days were long past, and he was now repulsed at the thought of bedding her, but body responses weren't restrained by the feelings of the heart. The old days were less easily forgotten by his physical self, and Nimueh apparently took pleasure in the small bits and pieces of physical attraction that he could not suppress his body from feeling, even now.
"I loathe that truth, and you well know it. You are taking pleasure from your domination of me and in the lack of control that you know repulses me so. I find powerlessness anethema, and loathe that I can be rendered powerless so easily like this." he said with annoyance and anger clear in his voice.

Uther knew that her words were true, and that was what tore at him. If he were weak, he would be able to do nothing if an opportunity for escape presented itself. The only way he could bring hope to the people, that he could keep Morgana's hold from being complete was to be free, to be able to at least be a symbol to the people even if he did not hold the castle. He could not have it both ways and he knew it. He was trying to hold firm, but it was still clear that she was having an effect, that her words were hitting at his resolve.
"You always know how to make your words cut, how to speak in just the way that will infuriate me the most."he growled."I simply do not think that I could ever lower myself to agreeing to any of your words. I am still repulsed by the thought. I would still sooner die."
He could not keep from hanging his head for just a few moments, wondering to himself just how long his resolve could hold.

Uther knew that Arthur was right about rebuilding the trust. Things probably would have been better had he been less stubborn and more able to admit to a wrong, but his pride would not let him. He knew, however, what Arthur was saying, and he could only nod.
"I can only say that I felt I was right at the time...but perhaps it would have been better had I at least told you. You would have been sworn to secrecy to prevent the people finding out, but at least you would have known. But I still do not know that I could have told her."
He would not have told Morgana, however, because he feared her so greatly. Arthur would never see it that way, though. He couldn't understand that he was only trying to do what was best for the kingdom, and that pained Uther.
Arthur began to speak about the knights again. "I am in little position to argue with you right now. I will not say that I can accept, but I know that right now, there is nothing to gain in arguing with you. They will stay for now, that is obvious."

"Yes"Uther agreed."There is the intangible most importantly...I fear there will need to be a rebuilding of trust. And the physical of course, the castle."It was the trust and understanding that was obviously most important, though. Morgana had betrayed them all, and he had, sadly, injured his relationship with Arthur. He could not change that, but he still longed for he and his son to eventually come to an understanding.
"I know you will not disappoint me. That you will do well, as you did before. Hopefully, my recovery will be a fast one. I will join you as soon as I can...when I am strong again. I hope I do not remain bedridden long...I fear it will weaken me even more. I will see...I want to trust you. Things will not be easy. I promise nothing, except to give these things thought. I desire for us to at least come to an understanding, if nothing else."

Uther was torn, much as she was. He knew he had to keep stregnth to escape, there was little question there. He truly was not certain what he should do now. He did realize that if he escaped and could help fight, it would be harder for Morgana to take all of the peoples' loyalty. But actually getting out of here was a lot easier said than done. That was what made it so difficult to hold out hope.
If he tried to escape and failed, he'd probably be whipped again, or tortured some other way. Morgana had threatened on a couple of occasions to break his legs if he managed to escape his cell at all. She was confident she'd capture and kill Arthur, and looking forward to tormenting him by doing it, then killing him afterward. He felt as though obeying them in any way was difficult and degrading, and he didn't trust them not to lace the food, not with poison, but with some other means of making him ill.
"I desire a way to ensure it is safe. I do not believe she will poison me. She thinks she will torment me by killing Arthur, and so she keeps me alive. But I do not trust them not to make me ill or lace it with something magical. I demand it be tested by someone before I eat any of it."

Uther again knew inside that Nimueh was right, but as always, he'd never admit it. The whole thing had become twisted and changed around in his mind to the point where he believed it to be real. He listened to her words, his mind having never been able to accept or admit his part in Ygraine's death. He hadn't known she would die, and that was a fact. He'd know there would be a price, but never expecting it would ever be her.
She spoke about speaking to Morgana, about telling her to let him go without food, but it didn't really faze Uther any. He'd refused most of what they'd given him anyway. Part of him didn't like it, he needed stregnth if any chance of escape presented itself, but the other part would rather die before staying locked up for who knew how long.
"It would matter little anyway. I have eaten little since I was put here. If I starve, so be it. I would rather die than remain imprisoned endlessly. Besides, it would not be the first time I have gone without for a time. Wars do not follow a regular schedule. A warrior must be prepared to suffer, whether in battle or if he is captured."

Uther of course had no solid proof, nothing he could confront Arthur with or that he wanted to argue about. He would keep a close eye on things, and wouldn't give up on finding Arthur a noblewoman to marry, but it was true that things were in a state of flux now, a time of change. Would the girl have to be made a Lady now that her brother was a knight? Uther wasn't certain. Originally, things had been set the way they were in an attempt to prevent disgrace by commoners. It wasn't out of the question for nobles to cause problems, obviously, but most of them were aware of their status to a point where they conducted themselves well enough to avoid much worry.
Uther blinked, a little surprised that things had been going on for three years. Part of him still wanted to believe it was an enchantment, but few spells lasted quite so long. It wasn't impossible, but it wasn't likely. Part of him wanted to speak to Arthur, but he thought the path he currently chose was the better one. Something inside him didn't think it was as likely to fade after three years as it might have been if it had not gone on so long, though.
"I am simply burdened with the kingdom's future...I wish to die knowing it is in good hands. I want Arthur to act with the kingdom's best intrest at heart. To not let his emotions get in the way of his duty. Sometimes love must be put aside for duty, and I wish Arthur could see that. It has been that way for a long time, my father knew it and his father before him. They ruled another kingdom, but that does not matter. Change will only lead to problems, and I will not think of Camelot being destroyed because of an insistance on new ideas and thoughts that what has always been, what has kept things in a good state for so long, is somehow no longer good enough."

Uther had expected that he was not going to dissuade Arthur from arguing extremely easily. Just knowing he wouldn't fight the appointment wasn't quite enough; he wanted complete agreement it seemed, wanted Uther to see his way of thinking. The king wasn't sure if that would ever be possible. It was a case of the new coming into conflict with the old, no different really than so many modern era generational clashes.
"It is just my way, I suppose...originally, it was a way many kings found of attempting to prevent problems...obviously, nobles are not immune to them, but most of them are aware of the need to conduct themselves according to their status. Commoners often aren't as careful with their bearing. I do understand the fact that they served Camelot well, however. That is another reason I've chosen not to battle you for knighting them, although I do not know if I can condone it on a regular basis. I am still uncertain as to what sort of impreession other rulers may get of our kingdom." he said.
"I wish to bring up something else while we are speakin. Am I correct that you will see fit to act as regent and tend to the affairs of the kingdom yourself for a time? I do not wish to step down if I can avoid it...I am weakened, but I will recover. I am not dead yet. I want what is best for Camelot, but I do not want to die weak and without a purpose. I do trust you while I recover...I only hope that I am able to eventually return to my duties, when I am stronger."

"It did not 'serve me right', you disgust me saying that. She did not deserve it and neither did I."He words made him sick, made him want to throw up. He knew deep inside that she was right about not having chosen for Ygraine to die, but he was too stubborn to ever admit it. What mattered to him is that it was magic that had killed her, and magic that had to be eradicated so no one else could be harmed by it, so Camelot would be safe.
She began talking about her price, what she wanted in exchange for freeing him. Uther found it hard to believe she'd even think he'd consider such an exchange. He did consider trying to deceive her, to seemingly agree to her demand, and then reveal the truth after he'd been freed. But she would likely have some way of punishing him if he chose that route. And, he would rather die than even appear to agree to such a propsition.
"As if I would even consider such a thing. I would sooner die. I see nothing of the sort, only that it got me into this situation. It was the Cup of Life, an artifact of magic, that enabled the overthrow. My hatred is only strengthened by this, and if I am to die, than so be it."

Uther knew that Nimueh would try to strike some kind of bargain with him, and he was fighting the temptation to ask or say anything about it. He knew that any agreement with her would not come cheap, just like anything she did, there would be a price. A price he probably would not appreciate having to pay. He knew what had happene before, what the price had been. He did not want to know what she would want now.
"I do not regret my actions...I did only what I had to."Uther's pride and stubbornness would never let him admit any mistakes of that sort, no matter what happened.
I am aware of at least some of the games you play. I know that if I choose to ask for your help, it would come with a price. And I am almost certain I will not like that price."he said."The price last time was far too much to bear. What more is there to take from me, aside from my life?

Uther made his way slowly out of his chambers and into the dining area. He was still somewhat weak, but he knew that he could not stay in bed too long if he wantd to have any chance of presenting an impression of stregnth to those around him and to the kingdom in general. After his talk with Gwen, his manservant had been located to get him dressed, and now he was as ready as he was going to get.
Uther knew that the tension would be unavoidable, and it was still palpable in his mind as he sat down. Arthur wasn't aware of how much he'd discerned, but he knew that when the prince became aware of what had been discussed recently, he likely would have quite a bit to say about it. Uther just hoped that he could diffuse the situation by making Arthur aware that he wasn't going to banish the girl, at least not right now. He couldn't do anything that would push Arthur away from him forever.
