"I think the whole of Camelot will agree that his ego does not need any more inflation," a small snort escaped from Merlin upon hearing this - Elyan seemed to have this down to a tee! "Im glad that someone sees this from my point of view" he replied smugly, "I'm going to have to find a bigger helmet for him if this carries on." This was actually quite enjoyable, and Elyan seemed in good spirits enough to make harmless comments about Arthur's ego. For Merlin, it was enough to know he had someone to joke around with when times were dark. "But I also think they are all proud of him, of everything he has achieved and everything he will." At this he nodded in agreement, "I know they are, Arthur has a different approach and methods when it comes down to being King - the people trust him, I trust him...I trust him with my life..."
Merlin shifted a little uncomfortably. He knew it pained Elyan about Gwen. It pained Merlin too - but the love of a brother was far different and deeper than the love of a friend. "I know Arthur regrets it" he said suddenly, "I just wish he'd see what a mistake he's made." Another sigh. He wanted so much to just have Arthur go and bring Gwen back to Camelot - to have everything normal again. Now everyone was just hurting, and Merlin didn't like it at all. He gave a small nod in agreement at Elyan's comment of Gwen being strong and looked at his shoes, "She and Arthur are the strongest people I know..."
"I have to listen to Arthur talk about all sorts of things all day - when it comes to patience, Im a professional" he chuckled slightly, "and you're not insane, just a man who is a mixture of emotions. We all have that from time to time, but we still go back to normality one way or another."

"Good" he replied back challengingly and appearing uncaring about the whole thing now. Perhaps if he acted like he wasn't really bothered, she would hopefully forget the whole thing and let him leave in peace. She could run and blab to Arthur for all he cared, but Merlin wasn't about to let her have an upper hand in this game of wit.
“Court life has its advantages.”
Merlin smirked at this, oh yes sooooooooooo many advantages - he knew by the look on Cait's face, what she was getting at - but also decided to play a little dumb as well. "So which is it? the boring conversation, the food or the fact that you can drink as much wine as you want?" he joked, knowing full well that Caitrin would probably knock off a whole long list of others things that she liked at court. Men? More Men? Knights? Wait...they were men too. Apart from that, Merlin really couldn't think from a noble's point of view about how advantageous court was - as a servant he only experianced being told what to do and that was it.
It appeared that the subject of arranged marriages was quite an awkward one. Apparently it was a relief to Caitrin so that was good to hear. "You seem like the type to go against the rules and marry who you wish." he smiled, "Is your Uncle now giving you greif about the whole thing?". By the sounds of her Uncle, he seemed like the type of man with many morals - and Caitrin had hardly said that many things about him.

This wasn't the first time that someone had told Merlin that he was wise. Arthur had mentioned it once before, but Merlin himself had never thought himself of that. He just said how he felt and offered advice and his thoughts should anyone need them. "It's just...how I feel really." he shrugged it off, "I've seen Arthur's change and even though I won't tell him myself - because quite frankly his ego is already big enough...im proud of him." he smiled warmly. He was proud of Arthur, of his achievements and of his ever budding future as King of Camelot.
They were still speaking as though Gwen was still there, in Camelot, with them. Merlin knew that it was hard for Elyan - after all his sister was everything to him. Merlin just looked at the floor. "I just wish I could have one something - to make Arthur see that it was all wrong...I could've at least helped her somehow." All Merlin had managed to achieve was watching her as she dragged her cart away from the town and from him and everyone she loved. Now that had hurt. "I just hope she's alright", a small sigh escaped him as he looked back to Elyan.
He smiled at Elyan's gratitude, at least he was actually helping and not making the situation any worse. "Im glad" he nodded, "I just didn't want you to feel as though you had no one to talk to - it hasn't exactly been a great time for you." He felt a small smile tug at his lips, not expecting to have heard that. "Oh...er, thanks" he said with warmth and not really knowing what to say. "You're a true friend too Elyan..." he carried on, "im happy that I have both you and Gwen to call my friends."

Merlin felt his cheeks become hotter when she kissed him in return for the flowers. Still after everything he was still a little embarassed and unsure when it came to girls and what they liked. Flowers seemed to appeal to Freya, and if Freya liked them, then that meant that Merlin was actually doing something right for once. "Well..." he shrugged shyly, "I saw them and thought of you." They were red, just like strawberries, and Freya liked strawberries.
As he went on to explain about the situations that had arisen since their last meeting, he caught a small smile out of the corner of his eye. She'd been expecting it of course. Just like the time she'd been expecting him to come and retreive the sword from her. The sword that now belonged to the true King. That alone made him smile, and still he felt rather pleased about the little story he'd made up to go along with it. At least Arthur had brought that! Usually he didn't believe any kind of 'bedtime story' that Merlin would go on about. The came the big question. Morgana.
Merlin hugged his knees into his chest, "I don't know..." The last he'd seen of her had been in the castle, when he'd tried to stop her by making the rubble fall onto her. In all truth, he hadn't been surprised when she was gone after the dust had cleared. She was still out there though, he could feel it - her just watching, and waiting. Should the time ever come when they would meet again then he would be ready. "I tried to stop her again... but I don't know where she is now." he carried on and looked to Freya. "Anyway, let's not talk about her. I came here to see you - how have you been?" he asked. He hoped that she was truly ok and not putting so much pressure on herself to try and stay on land for too many hours on end. Freya was determind, and he admired her for that, but he didn't want to her to overstep the mark when it wasn't necessary

He could see why she was doing this. For him. To keep him safe. Merlin pulled away as she said that she didn't want him to go. "I will be happy." he assured her, "If you believe that sending me to...Gauis? Is going to help me and keep me safe, then it's obviously what's best for me." he smiled - keeping a tight grip on her shoulders.
Merlin didn't believe her when she said that she would be alright. She wouldn't - not without him there. Yes his mother could certainly hold her own and fight her own battles, but he had no idea what she would become without him there to help. "Are you sure?" he asked anyway. Perhaps she might have second thoughts about it this way, but it seemed highly unlikely. After all - he'd practically packed what he needed now too.
"You are the light in this life, Merlin. If I can make you happy, then that is all I care about."
Merlin's gaze fell to the floor on hearing these words, before looking back to his mother, his brows knitted together in an expression of concern. "You really think that I am special don't you?" All the times she'd said it to him, he'd only thought that she was just saying ot because she was his mother. That was what mothers said to all of their children. But hearing in practically put into different words had made him see that perhaps she wasn't just saying it after all - and that he really was the only speciality in her life.
"Do you think that Gauis will be able to...help?" Was 'help' the word he was even looking for? Apparently he was someone who could teach Merlin a little more about his talent, but right now it seemed impossible for anyone to understand the extent of it apart from his mother.

Merlin was glad to see Elyan joking around with him - at least he was doing something right, and hopefully now the mood had lightened a little. It was a difficult subject to approach, but Merlin had made sure to do it with such care that it would not affect Elyan badly. After all - he didn't want to make it worse.
Elyan's next words made Merlin smile broadly, the idiotic grin that he used when he was right. But in this case it was because Elyan had just happened to hit the nail on the head, and Merlin couldn't have put the statement any better himself. "Arthur represents more than hope - he represents what is to come. The greatness, the future...everything that binds Camelot together" Merlin shrugged, "It's his destiny." That it was, and Merlin had helped him with that a little, as had Gwen (despite the circumstances). Everyone had. It had all shaped Arthur for a reason, and there was no doubt that there was more obstacles for him to come up against. There always was when you were a King. No matter what, Merlin would be there every step of the way.
"Things could have been a lot worse I guess, I mean I could have killed the king!" Merlin chuckled at this, trying to make Elyan see a lighter side of it. "We all want to kill Arthur sometimes, but it's over now, you didn't" he smiled at Elyan weakly."I wish Gwen was here, for as long as I can remember she always managed to make everything better," Gwen always made everything better. She had the attitude as well as the right words to say in even the most complicated of situations. "Gwen always makes everything better, sometimes I don't feel like I deserve a friend like her." He didn't - not really. He spoke of her as though she wasn't gone - because she wasn't, not to him anyway. Merlin missed her too, wishing he could've at least done something - but this was something that Arthur and Gwen had to figure them out themselves. Not even magic could correct it.
Merlin looked down into his lap, "At least you know you have someone to talk to - I didn't want you thinking that just because Gwen's gone, that you now had no one."

Before returning to his duties for Arthur that afternoon, Merlin had a tonic that he needed to stop off and deliver to Lady Caitrin. She had requested it just the previous evening, and with Gauis as busy as he was - it had been left up to Merlin to make it and deliver it. Not that he minded those tasks of course, but to Lady Caitrin - oh no, now there lay the problem. Ever since she'd caught him with her jewellery and had managed to somehow get it into her head that he liked to play dress up?! That had gone down well, and thankfully Merlin hadn't had much to do with her since then. It was only now he was dreading this little meeting once and for all.
He came to the door of the guest chambers where she was staying, following the delivery of her twins just a few days earlier. With a hesitant hand, he finally knocked on the door - hearing the familar voice calling for him to enter.
Merlin opened the door quietly and poked his head round. "Im sorry to disturb you and the children my lady, but you requested a tonic?" he apologised politely and waited for the signal to come in more. After all, he didn't want to disturb her recovery, nor her time bonding with her babies.

Find the person that Arthur truly loves...that shouldn't be too hard. Well - he knew who to find, but where to find her was the problem, especially when time was running out. Gwen wasn't in the castle, Merlin knew she hadn't gone to the tournament and she wasn't in any of her usual places that her duties took her - the only other option was her home.
Merlin hoped that Gwen would listen to him and see that this was all one big mistake. That Arthur was enchanted and that she could be the only one to help before it was too late. Of course he'd have to admit to her that he knew of the feelings that they held for one another, but this only made him more determind that the dragon's words were right. He'd already watched Arthur go through two rounds with Olaf, and if he carried on fighting the way he was (which was incrediably terrible, and Merlin would indeed remind Arthur of that later) then he would surely lose. Sadly, Merlin knew that so would Gwen.
He hurried down the street to Gwen's house, and not even caring whether she was bothered about him not knocking (he had a tendancy to do this, but then again it was an emergancy!) he flung the door open and walked in. However much it would take, he would need to convince Gwen that this was the only way to save Arthur.

Merlin couldn't sleep, darkness had fallen over the forests where the group had set up for the night. All the while he shifted, tossed and turned on the leafy floor - trying to get comfortable and to stop his mind from going into overdrive. Why were the Knights suddenly all acting so out of character? Going against eachother? Snapping at both him and Gwen. Even Leon, who Merlin had thought to be the one to make the sensible options, was now insisting that they take Lamia back home. Surely Camelot was nearer? At least there she could be given medical attention, but no - everyone seemed set on the idea. They were taking Lamia home.
Merlin hadn't the chance to speak with Gwen about any of this, not of the thoughts he had about the whole situation. They'd just really kept giving one another looks as though to ask what on earth was going on? He had conveniantly placed his space to sleep, right next to Gwen's, so should anything happen - then at least he could get to her in time. At the moment something just didn't feel right, nor did he feel as though he could trust the Knights as much as he used to any more. Merlin was sure that this was all down to Lamia.
Rolling onto his back, he put his arms under the back of his neck to prop his head up slightly. It was spookily quiet, apart from the crackling of the ever dying fire. With a small sigh he turned his head to see whether Gwen was awake.
"Gwen?....Gwen?" he whispered, hoping that she was indeed awake and that he could finally raise his suspicions. At least he knew that if Gwen had any doubt about Lamia, she would tell him.

The day had been like any other. Long and busy - but Merlin found that as soon as he was on his feet, he wasn't able to sit down for the rest of the day given the huge list of duties to complete. Not that he minded, he'd found that they were keeping him occupied and taking his mind ofd the recent events that had happend. Tonight he'd finished his work, gone straight back to the physician's quarters and practically inhaled the soup that he'd made earlier on. He'd only had time to take one bite of an apple earlier on during the day before he'd had to go and collect the washing and launder it.
Merlin was currently sat at the table hunched over his magic book. He hadn't really looked at it lately, and should anyone come in, there was a big pile of books next to him to hide it as well as to give off the fact that he was actually looking through some very 'exciting' books about various remedies made from wild mushrooms. In all truth, he had absolutely no idea on what kind of remedies were made from it, should anyone happen to question him. He'd cross that bridge when he'd come to it.
Merlin let out a small yawn - it was probable that he should really get an early night, but a few more pages to read wouldn't hurt. Besides, a bit of bedtime reading was good for the mind, especially when there was a lot on it. Thankfully his own was clear tonight, and that was a first.

Despite his mother's protests about not being always right, Merlin did not listen. His mother knew what was best for him - after all, she'd raised him alone and had taken great care in protecting him.
"I have tried to protect you, to make you happy... and it seems I have failed."
Merlin walked up to her and drew her into a tight hug. "Don't say that" he murmered, not wanting to let go of her. "You have done everything that is right for me. Anyone can see that, and even if it means going to find Gauis, then i'll go." he smiled weakly. He now felt a little guilty for sounding so cold earlier. When he left his mother would be alone and that was the only thing he was worried about.
"Of course I do" he broke away from her embrace. "and you're precious to me. I just don't like the though of going away and leaving you on your own." Merlin looked down at the floor, "You're the only one that I have..." he admitted quietly. With no father or siblings it would always just be him and his mother. He wouldn't change that for anything. Notes: No problem! It was worth the wait

Would it be good never to be forgotton? Had Merlin had a massive ego then he would've thrived on the statement - but thankfully he didn't have anything of the sort and was more modest when it came down to the whole 'emrys' stories and such. "I'll only believe that when I see it." he smiled. People could be remembered for all sorts. Good and bad.
Merlin shifted slightly in the water, his hand still entwined with Freya's. It wouldn't be long before he would have to leave. He had no idea as to when he would be back again but he would try to visit as regularly as he could. "I didn't know I was that much of a 'legend' with the druids' he smiled.
He looked around. "I'll have to go soon." he turned back to her with a sorrowful look, "But I promise to come back often, even if it means swimming to the middle of the lake to see you." Questions would certainly be raised when he returned, so he'd have to come up with something believeable rather than the whole 'I just happened to fall in the lake' thing that was currently going through his mind.

"Go ahead and ask then" he folded his arms and gave a look as though he wasn't bothered. He'd best start digging that hole now, because he'd never hear the end of it from Arthur.
Lord Rouland? Merlin had never really heard of him, and the fact that Caitrin now was saying that he mainly kept to his estate was probably the reason why. "Oh, right" he nodded, "He's not the type of person who enjoys mingling with people he's never met then" he chuckled slightly. Merlin knew that some of these functions could be very dull and had he been born a noble, he knew that like Rouland, he'd keep to his estate as well. "Representing the family then" he smiled when Caitrin announced she made up for Rouland's absense. "I would have thought that you would be bored at court events?" Merlin didn't really know what made it appealing. People had mixed feelings on the subject.
At least he hadn't made her feel uncomfortable with the whole father thing. “My father couldn’t look after me at home, so he said I could live with my Uncle, or he would arrange another marriage for me in haste.” A typical nobleman/daughter scenario then. "At least he gave you the choice instead of just arranging a marriage - I suppose that's some relief for you?" Whether it was or not was another story. He didn't know whether Caitrin would have like to have been married instead of coming to Camelot or not.

Merlin chuckled slightly as Elyan mentioned about not poisoning him. "It will come in handy for when I want to though". It was certainly useful to know that kind of stuff, especially when it came down to learning for Gauis.
Him? Beat Arthur. Yes Merlin could do it with his hands tied behind his back. But he wouldn't - because he knew the danger that would be. He remembered Arthur saying that he could take him down with one blow, Merlin had said that he could take him down with less. Back then he'd been so sure of himself, and everything had been going smoothly until he saw Gauis watching and then had a broom smacked round his head. Merlin still had things thrown at him, only that had got less as the years went on - that and he'd become a professional in the art of ducking when objects were launched his way. "He has" he agreed with Elyan, "certainly from when I first met him anyway. I think it's because now he's grown up and recognised just how much responsibility he has to have - then again, I think even back then he knew. He cares for his people a great deal, but I guess he liked to put on a front."
"I'm afraid it may be one of those experiences that change you forever. Have you ever had that?"
Merlin couldn't exactly say that he'd had a druid boy haunting his dreams. Well, there had been Mordred but he hadn't exactly had nightmares over him. However Merlin had seen things that he would never forget. He nodded at this. "Too many to count..." Everyone had skeletons, everyone had done something that they regretted and never forgot. It was only human, and he said exactly this to Elyan. "You're only human. I'm sure worse things have happened to others though, and when you think about the situation that you were in, it could have got out of control but thankfully it didn't." He really didn't know where this was going or if it was even helping matters.
"I guess what i'm trying to say is that you were lucky...that it wasn't as bad as it could've been" he added.

He knew that Elyan would turn down the sleeping draft but a headache one? Merlinw as sure that he could rustle up something. He nodded at the question. "Im sure he does, I could make some up for you and being it to you this evening if you want? I know pretty much how to make a few drafts thanks to Gauis." Merlin had learnt quite a bit about remedies after spending those years living with the physician. It certainly was an advantage, especially when Gauis was seeing to someone in the town and Merlin was around to help anyone in the castle that needed something.
Merlin nodded in agreement with Elyan's words. Yes...yes it was... so many times they'd come so close to death and always avoided it. Thank goodness. "Even I wanted to kill him when I first met him, but I suppose that he has some redeeming qualities." he smirked, "Im only joking, he's my best friend and I didn't even think that he would become that when I first started working for him. Then again I suppose you shouldn't judge people to quickly." Merlin shrugged. "Luck" Merlin repeated, "Yeah...he certainly has a lot of that!" Yes....'luck'.
"Perhaps you'll remember more as time goes on, then again I don't know if that's a good thing or not." he replied. He felt sorry for Elyan - having the memory of the child staying with him. There were many things that haunted Merlin even if they'd happened years ago. He knew that within time, everything would soon work out. "I know...but it will get better - i'm sure." he smiled weakly.
"Have you ever wished you could just unsee something or undo something so badly it hurt?" Elyan's words were quite haunting actually. Merlin's brows knitted together as he nodded, "What is it Elyan?" he asked, not knowing whether he'd missed something after the child had left Elyan's body.

Merlin smirked at Gwaine's answer. It was typical Gwaine and he wouldn't change. Merlin liked him like that though. "Then perhaps it's time to stop?" he chuckled and nudged on the horse to speed up a little. They were never going to get to Arthur in time if they were just going on a gentle trot.
Gwaine was now asking the question of what Arthur had got himself into this time. "He's on a quest to bring back the trident of the Fisher King, unfortunatly it happens to be in the Perilous lands, so you can guess why I asked your for help." He couldn't do this alone, especially when Arthur's life was in danger. It would take two for something as big as this. Whether Arthur thanked them or not, at least Merlin would be safe in the knowledge that he would hopefully get him out of there alive. "Then again, I knew you wouldn't turn down an opportunity like this."
Gwaine seemed to thrive on danger and so Merlin knew that this would be right up his street.

Freya's words put Merlin's mind to rest. She had hours, and there was so much to say that it could indeed take him hours to relay everything back to her. He was so pleased to see her, it had felt like a lifetome since he had last been at the lake. Now his duties to Arthur was appear to prevent him from coming here as often as he would like to, so those hours that Freya had stated that she had, were precious.
"I know" he smiled softly, "I knew you wouldn't stop at nothing until you found a way."
Merlin sat himself down by the lake, just as he had done so before and patted the space next to him for Freya to sit down too. "Oh, err i almost forgot." he said, passing her the flowers, "I picked you these..." He watched her for a moment, "I know it's nothing much, but nothing quite says hello like flowers" he gave a little shrug.
"What has happened these past few months? How are you?"
Merlin shifted for a moment. Where should he begin? "Im fine, still here" he smiled, "Quite a bit, Arthur is now the King of Camelot." He felt a slight warmth when saying this. "Oh, and he's married, so much has happened I don't know where to start!"

At least he didn't have to worry. Sure Elyan would need some time but he was holding up well, and that was all that mattered. Then again he was a Knight and Knights did have to be strong both physically and emotionally. "Are you sleeping alright? If not I could ask Gauis to make you a sleeping potion?" he offered, not knowing whether Elyan was losing sleep over it. He most likely wasn't but it wouldn't hurt to ask.
"Since when is Arthur not someone's target?" Good point. All these years Merlin had spent trying to keep the King out of danger when it was really inevidable that he would be a target for many reasons. Merlin smiled at him, "Ever since I came to Camelot, something to someone has been out to get him. Then again when I first met him I could see why." A small smirk formed across his lips, remembering the first run in with Arthur.
He shook his head at Elyan's question. "No" thankfully. Had no one had got there in time then Elyan may have suceeded. "You were thrown in the dungeons though, do you remember that?" he asked. Merlin could - he had been the one to get him out so as he could 'exorcise' the spirit. That hadn't gone well at all, resulting in Elyan knocking him out in the middle of the forest. He wouldn't tell him that part though.

He waited for a while, not seeing the water move at all. Was she there? Had she heard him? Merlin was getting worried now. Had something happened to her? He would never forgive himself for not coming to see her sooner. "Freya?" he called again. Perhaps it was just down to him not calling her loud enough. "Freya it's me, Merlin!" As stupid as he may have looked, just shouting at a lake, Merlin couldn't care who saw him at this moment. All that mattered was that Freya was somewhere safe.
He felt a light pressure on his shoulder and jumped, turning round to see who had touched him. "Hello Merlin," A look of releif passed across his face. She was there. She was ok. She was on land?! "Freya!" he smiled, as well as giving her a look of disbelief. "Wow...you're actually on land and not in the water?" His expression now changing to one of worry. "How long do you have?" he asked.
Merlin didn't want to start going on about all that had happened, only to have Freya go back into the water almost straight away.

Today had been an achievement in itself. He'd found Gwaine, got involved in a tavern brawl and was now on his way to the Perilous lands. A good result so he thought.Tracking down Gwaine proved to be more easier than he thought. He only had to check the taverns and he just happened to be in the first one he stepped through.
The reason why Merlin had decided to find Gwaine was because he was one of the strongest fighters he knew, and he would need help in finding Arthur - should Gauis story about the Fisher King be anything to go by. That and the Pheonix eye bracelet that Morgana had given to Arthur as a 'gift'. That was no gift of good gesture. Merlin had sensed it, and after learning exactly what it was capable of - he was taking no chances in Arthur completing this quest alone. It was his duty to make sure his friend didn't come to any harm. The Pheonix eye could kill after all. He knew that much and had been on a horse riding out of Camelot as soon as he'd found out.
Both Merlin and Gwaine were now riding through the woods, the journey would be long and they'd been riding for an hour or so already. Merlin shot a sideways glance at Gwaine. "Still talking to strangers then" he smirked, referring to the group who had chased them out of the tavern earlier. "and here was me thinking thar after one brawl, that you had learnt your lesson." This was Gwaine he was talking about. He'd always stay the same, drinking, brawling. "What did they want anyway?"
