Merlin had been so lost in his thoughts that the sudden touch on his back not only took him by surprise, but also made him jump up a few feet in the air. "WAAAAAAAAAAAH!" what on earth was that?! He spun round - seeing Freya was awake and that she had been the culprit. He heaved a sigh of relief and scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Good morning."
"Sorry" he apologised, "I wasn't expecting you to be awake so early."
He noticed she had a strange look about her. He frowned slightly, hoping that it wasn't more mood swings or the baby giving her grief. If so then he would stay away from the firing line. He didn't really know how to deal with her when she was either angry or breaking down in tears. All he could do was just hold her and let her have it out until she stopped. This look on her face was worrying him now...
"Are you in pain?" he asked, concerned about what her answer could be.

----- A few Months Later -----
It was incrediably strange to try hugging a woman with child, Merlin found that now on most days he couldn't fit his arm fully over Freya's every growing stomach! The baby was definatly in there! Then there was the mood swings (Merlin mainly kept away if she was in a bad one) and just the whole fact that this was now all seeming so very real. It was real of course but to see it happen clarified it.
He'd finally got used to the idea there indeed there would be a ittle person around soon, and the whole 7 MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONTHS! debacle was easing off slowly but surely. If fact the last few months had gone rather quickly. He was now lying there thinking about whether he should visit Gauis, but the more he thought about it - the more he knew that his friend would be disappointed in him, and should Arthur happen to see him? Well...he was screwed. No, it was just best to lie low for a while. Just until everything was right. Merlin just didn't know when that would be. The dragon would have told him, then again he couldn't exactly go to the dragon now - he was already annoyed with him enough as it was, but part of Merlin felt as though he needed guidance from someone. Yes Freya was very supportive, but when it came down to matters that she wouldn't know how to handle, it seemed that only the dragon could provide the answer.
A small sigh escaped him as he rolled over and sat up on the edge of the bed, running a hand through his hair. He would ask Freya what to do when she woke up - at least then he'd have some backing to go by.

Merlin chuckled as Freya spoke. "I very much doubt it - you better hope for the best"he grinned. Perhaps he should back off a little and allow her to do what she wanted, well until she needed help anyway. "I won't - you know me, work, work work" he said, literally bouncing around and popping things into the pot that she had cut up.
"Anyway...i'd rather overwork myself than allow you to" he told her sternly, "I should be the one telling you to take it easy". That was one thing that women were always told with Freya's condition. To rest and take it easy until the baby arrived. No doubt that Freya wouldn't listen - she was far to independant to rely on him to do everything for her whilst she carried their child.
He stirred the stew as he started to bubble slowly. It was only now that he was getting hungry. All the excitement was certainly draining to say the least.

“A little,”
That answer was enough to make him start rushing around looking to prepare something substantial for them both. What did she like? What made her feel ill? He had no idea, so he was going to have to improvise and throw something together. “Merlin, please! Relax!” she was trying to say, but he wouldn't listen. Relax? Relax at a time like this when his wi...partner? Was with child?! Merlin wouldn't be relaxing for the next seven months and thereafter. Already he was preparing himself for what was to come.
"No way...im going to look after you" he grinned, and chucked a few things into the pot of now boiling water over the fire. Stew it was. "Please" he turned to her, "Just sit down and let me do this" a smile flashed across his lips, "because otherwise im going to be worrying - and believe me...you haven't yet seen my extent of worrying!"
Nope. This was just the beginning. He knew he would get much worse as the months rolled on, but he couldn't help it.

He saw her face change and then change again when he answered her question. Teasing? Him? Merlin smirked at her, "I've done worse" he shrugged innocently and reached for the jug of water on the table, to pour himself something to drink. It was only now he realised just how thirsty he was through all the excitement. He was hungry, but too happy to so much as eat anything at the moment.
Turning to Freya, he gave her a small smile. "Are you hungry?" he asked, "because you need to eat" Ok, he was soooooooooooooooo going to be one hell of a protective father when this baby arrived!, "In fact sit down, I'll get you something" he pulled up a chair for her and set about pottering around so as she wouldn't tire herself out. "and if you're cold or anything, just tell me and i'll throw some more logs onto the fire".
Oh yes, he was going to be such a pain in the ass for the next seven months.

Do this Merlin! Do That Merlin! Merlin! Merliiiiiiiiiiiiiiiin!
He was glad to have escaped Arthur's company for a while. He'd spent the morning polishng armour and swords and anything that needed shining. Boots Included, and now it was time to head off and prepare some lunch for the Prince.
Merlin headed off down the hallways and to the kitchens, a list of what else he needed to do running through his mind. Washing, sweeping, scrubbing the floor, rearranging Arthur's socks?! Then later on when he returned to Gauis he would have to do even more washing and scrubbing before falling into bed. Sometimes he just wished he could have a few moments to himself without being called an idiot or being asked to scrub a leech tank. Before fetching Arthur's lunch he would need to go and change and at least grab something small to tide him over until he ate that evening.
So lost in his thoughts that it was only the figure sitting on the steps that caught his attention as he passed. At first he was surprised to see the person sat there, and then resorted to being very concerned at their state of being. "Mother?!" he crouched down, "Mother? is that you?" he asked, putting a hand around her, "What are you doing here? What's wrong?"

He could see his mother's expression change slightly as she explained about what people might do to him if they found out about his talent. "But...why would they want to do anything to me because i'm different? I haven't exactly done anything to hurt them have I?" Yes he understood that there were people out there who would be scared of him, but to try and hurt him because of what he was?
Merlin saw her smile when she dismissed his statement about being scared of him. "I was never scared of you. I was very, very scared for you, but that is a completely different matter." He fiddled with his fingers as she spoke. "Did you...did you know what it was? When I first started to do...things" he mumbled slightly. He felt a little uneasy asking her all these questions, but never once had he asked in such depth, Merlin just thought that it was something he'd possessed since birth. "Does anyone else know about me? Apart from you and Will?"
So Gauis knew about gifts like the one that he had? That was a releif to know there was someone if ever his mother or he needed advice - despite him not having met the man. Merlin froze as his mother started to stumble over her words. He could tell what was coming - what could be coming. He looked up at her from where he was still playing with his fingers, a little hurt in his eyes.
"You want me to leave...don't you?"

She really looked as though she wanted to cry now. Merlin pulled a spare piece of cloth from his pocket - thankfully un-used - and passed it to her. He was curious about what she was now saying. Someone who could tell him more? "Who?" he asked, "tell me about what? about how different I am? because believe me I already know enough without someone having to explain it to me." This statement didn't come out sounding angered, but rather calmer than he thought it would. He never snapped at his mother, why should he? She'd done nothing wrong.
"Merlin, there are those who would see your gift as being something to fear, something to hide. I worry for you, I worry that these people will find out about you."
He shook his head at this, "They won't" he tried to reason with her, "If they haven't found out yet then they never will, and Will won't tell anyone - I know he won't" It was then he realised that she wasn't talking about the villagers. "Oh..." he nodded quietly, "I can see why they would be afraid" They would if a cart full of hay began to roll towards them on it own, or if a broom began to dance around them.
"Were you scared of me?" he asked truthfully, "When I was first able to do...that..." he shifted uncomfortably, talking about the first time he'd made something move and hadn't meant to.
Gauis? Merlin frowned and shook his head slowly, "No...the name sounds familar but I don't think i've ever met him..."

He returned her hug with a tight one, smiling as she thanked him. At least that was something that had made her happy. "Merlin... there is something we need to talk about, though." That sentance alone made him freeze. Talk about what? The colour of the sky? Food? Bunnies and doggies? No, no...it wouldn't be any of those. He was worrying now - despite her protests earlier, perhaps he had done something wrong. "About what?" he asked quietly.
"You are such a good boy, Merlin,"
Merlin didn't like where this could be leading already. It was as though she was trying to break some horrifying news to him in the most gentle of ways. He pulled another stool up and sat opposite her, fiddling with his fingers as she spoke. "I know you have questions... about your... gift." He looked up at her at this - the firelight making his face brighter on one side, yet dark on the other. One side of hope and the other...of some kind of darkness with pain that was yet to fall on him?
What was she trying to say? To tell him. "No...I don't" he shook his head innocently, not really wanting her to carry on incase it happened to turn out to be something bad. He'd never raised any questions about his 'gift'. It had always been part of him since before he could talk. There really wasn't any explanation for it...was there?
"What's wrong?" he asked again, this time with a little more urgency in his voice. He had to know why she was acting so strangely, yet at the same time he really didn't want to.

"Merlin?"
He jumped up quickly from where he'd been mucking about trying to stack some spare wood by the fire. "Im here!" he grinned and headed to the table, picking up the flowers and passing them to his mother. "I thought you might like these...you didn't seem yourself this morning." Hopefully it was nothing that he'd done, his mother just didn't appear to be her usual self.
It was then Merlin caught sight of her expression. Her eyes. She was crying? Or looked as though the tears were threatening to fall at least. "What's wrong?" he asked concerned. "Has something happened?" His mother never cried in front of him. It was rare to say the least. She was always appearing so strong and yet now it looked as though she was about to crumble before him. "Have I done something?" he dared to ask. If he had then he wanted to know what he could possibly do to make it all right again.
"Please...don't cry - here sit down" he pulled up a stool, "I've got some stew that I made...and I didn't get it wrong this time" he smirked - trying to lighten her spirits.

He'd spent the morning doing the odd job around the house whilst his mother worked. Merlin did all that he could to help her. Getting firewood, sweeping, general cleaning - attempting to make dinner (most of the time it would end up going horribly wrong, and he'd resort to looking at the broom, which would thenmove to sweep up the bits.). Today was another day. Will had dragged him out to the wood s earlier to help find wood for the fire, most of the time his best friend bantered on about how Merlin had it easy and could just make the logs appear back at his house without saying anything. That wasn't true. Merlin couldn't make anything appear or disappear just...move?
It was strange. All this life he'd been able to move things. To stop things falling...he'd never been able to explain it, and he was sure that his mother worried for him contantly. Merlin knew he was different from everyone else in the village, but he was never made to feel like an outsider - nor was he critisised for it. Only Will and his mother knew. This secret was kept from everyone else, despite the close-knit community. He'd never asked why or how he'd come to have this sort of 'gift' as his mother had put it. Merlin wasn't sure if he could even class it as that. All he knew that his mother said he was special, and that he was a little different from any normal person. Merlin knew he wasn't normal, and he never would be - but that hadn't stopped him from trying to lead a normal childhood, despite the strange occurances.
Now that he'd grown, he'd been able to control it a little more, being able to make things stop and move when he wanted them to. That was about as far as it went, whereas when he was younger, he would get upset if a jug suddenly spilt water over the floor for no reason, when he'd looked at it.
He had successfully made some stew for his mother when she returned. It wouldn't be long now. She seemed a little lost in her thoughts that morning, so Merlin had taken it upon himself to make her some supper and to have some freshly picked flowers waiting for her when she came home.
Chucking some more wood onto the fire, he pottered about for a while. With all the chores over for that day, now he could finally sit down for the evening.

Merlin sighed. Freya was the only person he felt free enough to show off the extent of his talents too. Ok Gauis had seen what he was capable of, but not as much as Freya had. It was as though they had a connection, and that wasn't just the fact that they both had magic. He'd known it from the first time he saw her in the cage, how she'd looked at him and he at her. It was as though he knew her somehow. "I know" he swallowed, "and I feel like I can be myself with you, not someone who has to hide...but I do wonder sometimes what it would be like if magic wasn't banned - that people used it for good..."
“People are not often born with your abilities. I do not think Gaius himself knows how to handle your situation.” He looked up from his reflection to her. "Gauis has helped me since I first arrived, but not every book can tell him all he needs to know" he agreed. “I do not mean to discredit him, I just don’t think he understands you fully.”
"You haven't" he smiled, "but you're right...I don't think anyone does - sometimes I don't even understand myself." His thumb grazed gently against the top of her hand as he still held it, the coolness of the water rippling around them."I guess...Sometimes I just wonder about whether I should walk away - from all this. Then I remember that I can't. I couldn't do that to Arthur...not after everything."

Something caught Merlin's eye, where he'd been staring previously. Right from where Mordred's voice had come from. The boy was now making his presence known so it seemed. Merlin had no need to defend himself yet, but he kept his guards up all the same.
"I have not come here to fight Emrys. I am merely seeking answers and it is pure chance that I find you out here alone. So we may talk wizard to wizard." Ok...That was certainly unexpected, then again Mordred had been raised with druids, and they were supposedly peaceful. He wasn't going to deny him.
"Alright..." he replied back in his mind, "What answers did you come to find?" he asked curiously. He had no idea what Mordred could possibly want with Camelot at this very time - the last he'd seen of him was when the boy threatened that he would pay. He'd done well to keep from Camelot for such a long time if that was his wish.
Then again he wasn't there to fight and neither was Merlin.
Notes: Sorry for the delay!

Merlin saw Freya's expression change from a worried one to a more content nature. She had no reason to fear his mother - if anything, Merlin knew that his mother would be there for them no matter what. He would write to her later and explain the situation.
His hand never left her stomach - never wanting to until he held their child in his arms. It was a different life, a different person to protect - but in a far different way than he had done with Arthur. Feeling the excitement in the pit of his stomach, he felt Freya take their joined hands and rest her cheek against them. Merlin smiled contentedly at her - she would be the perfect mother, and one day...the perfect wife, should that situation ever arise. For now all he could think of was the thought of their child and trying to keep himself from passing out still. It was unreal, the news was still sinking in and just thinking about it made him all giddy. Not with anything unpleasant, but more euphoric.
“You are truly happy, then?”
His face turned blank and he shook his head. "No...no im not..." he paused, "Im so much more than that" he grinned and kissed her again, "Im incrediably, truly, amazingly...happy" he finished off as he broke the kiss.

She was protesting now as he had ventured into the water after her. "Cold shmold!" he scoffed, "Besides, it makes it more easier for you" and that was all that mattered to him. What harm was a little dip in the lake anyway? No doubt Gauis would give him a look up and down when he returned, along with a "what on earth happened to you?!" statement. Merlin would lie and say he tripped over his own feet and just happened to be next to the lake. Gauis wouldn't buy it, but at least he'd give up on the subject.
Freya told him about the druids and their lives. "It must have been nice" he said, "for you to be free, to be who you are without anyone around you judging you - and to be able to just use it as you wished" Merlin wished he could do that more often, but with Arthur around the the whole little detail of magic being banned, he could only use it as and when he wanted to. One of these days though, Merlin would tell him - and when that time came he was going to make sure that he could show Arthur just how much magic could be used for better.
"I miss the way things were."
Even now Merlin was thinking of Ealdor, of Will. His best friend had taken his secret to the grave. Merlin missed him as Will seemed to be the only one who understood, plus they'd grown up together so they could hardly turn their backs on one another. Merlin shifted a little in the water and looked down at the reflection. All he saw staring back at him was a 'chicken bone' with the weight of the world teetering on his shoulders. "I know...but even sometimes I think that Gauis doesn't give me enough. I don't want him to, but I would have thought that he would at least understand a bit more - seeing as he was the first person to know of my magic when I arrived in Camelot"

"I'm afraid she'll hate me,"
Merlin could tell by Freya's expression that the statement she'd just come out with, had been rolling around in her mind for sometime. He shook his head at this. "My mother could never hate you", but still it wasn't enough to convince her. "For making you leave. For him or her..."
"Especially not for him or her" Merlin replied and shuffled closer towards her, "My mother would love you the second she sees you, I've never known her to hate anyone, even people who have done her wrong - she's not like that, besides..." he put his hand on her stomach, "She would never hold something like this against you" he smiled.
"But she still deserves to know of what is going on in your life."
He nodded at this, "Which is why i'll write to her and tell her of everything, about leaving Camelot, about you and how wonderful you really are - and about how happy I am" Merlin's hand went from Freya's stomach to her own hand, he gave it a gentle squeeze of encouragement.
Gosh how he loved her!

"We'll figure it out,"
"Mmmm" came the muffled sound of his voice from where it was currently pressed down on the tabletop. SEVEN MONTHS. He couldn't hate that number anymore than he did now. In fact Merlin didn't even know why he was freaking out so much, possibly the fact that this was REAL LIFE. It wasn't long in his book.
"It doesn't seem like a lot of time but I think we'll manage."
Babies, magic, magical babies....he'd relayed the same thoughts and coversations with himself over and over and over again. Nothing could prepare him for this, no matter how much or little time they had left. He needed to calm down - perhaps breathing would be a good idea. He looked up from his current resting place on the table and to Freya. His mother? It was an idea. He'd already written to say that he'd left Camelot, but left the details of why, vague. She wouldn't have had an answer from Gauis as Merlin didn't even leave a note or anything. He'd thought it best to just slip away unnoticed.
He ran a hand through his hair. "I think it's time that I told her why I left Camelot" his eyes met Freya's, "after all...she needs to know, i've never really kept anything hidden from her...well, perhaps a few things but something this big? She'd never forgive me if I didn't tell her about it". Merlin loved his mother dearly, and hoped that she wouldn't think too badly of him for giving up everything he had worked towards for love. "I'll write to her..."

He watched her slide into the water, frowning slightly. Was she leaving him now? No she couldn't be - she would've said goodbye. He sighed with relief as she emerged from the water again, looking far better for it. Merlin watched her for a moment before he saw her reach for his hand. He smiled and took it, edging nearer to her and then finally deciding to actually get into the water himself. It would be far more easier than to have Freya come onto land again.
He felt the coolness hit him as he waded in, so that the water was practically to his waist. "You don't give yourself enough credit, Merlin," she was now saying in response to his words earlier, "If I was still welcome among my people...If I was, I would take you to them, for you to hear of the stories they tell of what is to come." He smiled at this, his hand still grasped over hers. He took her other hand in his free one, so that he was now holding them both. "What was it like?" he asked, " growing up in surroundings like that, knowing that you had...well, that power" Merlin had always been curious of how druids had lived and practiced since he'd come across them. It was strange that they should cast one of their own out as they were generally peaceful in their practices and what they stood for.
Merlin then laughed slightly, "Of course I don't give myself credit - why should I when no one else recognises it but me?" Merlin didn't expect any thanks, but sometime he felt that if Arthur did know just how much he'd done for him so far, then it would be nice to hear it from him

She couldn't wait and he knew that. He didn't her to go through anymore pain because of him - he caused enough before, and to see it again. Well, he didn't like it. Not one bit. It just made all the memories resurface. "You NEED to get back in the water" he stressed, "Remember how I told you that I would look after you?" he asked her, "well, this is me looking after you."
Wait...she'd been on shore before? It was dangerous for her now, she shouldn't be trying things like that. Then again, if she was confident and adament enough that she could do it then he had faith that she would become stronger within time. Merlin just didn't like the thought that air could possibly kill her, when he used it to keep himself alive. "You should have told me before..." he said quietly, "You should have told me that you were going to attempt to come ashore" his eyes met hers, "I would've helped." He felt his words become far more quiet, as though they were both sharing a secret.
"You must take care, though, on your journeys with Arthur. There is so much that you and the prince must still overcome and I fear for you."
Merlin pulled his knees up, wrapping his arms around them so as he was hugging them. He gave a small scoff at this, "Don't I know it..." a sigh escaped him. Everyone who knew about his gift seemed to expect him to be this great warlock who with Arthur united Albion, he felt very far from it lately.

"Hello Emrys."
The voice, an all too familar one greeted him in his mind. Merlin turned and looked around trying to spot the face that it belonged to. He was near - very near and Merlin could feel him. All anger, rage, resentment. Anything that he could think of possessed this person. He couldn't understand how someone so young could even think like that, more importantly - why was he in Camelot? Did he not understand the danger? Perhaps he was back in league with Morgana. It wouldn't have surprised Merlin in the slightest as he knew she had a bond with the boy before she'd even turned against everyone. He also knew just how much power that the boy possessed. Perfect to be on Morgana's side and he alone would be just as valuable to her as any other individual.
Merlin knew the parting words that had been left last time. He would never be forgiven and was now reguarded as an enemy. Merlin had many enemies, that he was sure of - and this one was no different to the rest. Still with his guard right up, yet appearing most vulnerable, Merlin finally spoke to him through his mind, just as he had done before. "Why are you here Mordred?"
