Uther was fairly lucid when Merlin came in. Most of the time, he was tended to by the girl, the one who had been Morgana's maid, except of course when it came to bathing and dressing him, then a manservant would see to it. Uther studied him for a few moments, not saying much of anything. He was a bit curious, and these days, always suspicious of those he didn't recognize or rarely saw, and Merlin was usually busy with the prince.
"Where is the girl? She was not available?"he asked. Luckily for Merlin, he didn't start shouting this time, or accuse him of being Nimueh in disguise. He was not certain it was not such a situation, but neither did he say it was at the moment.
One of the ghost-creatures came out shrieking, and Uther was uncertain if it was real or another magic-induced torment. That *did* start him crying out, pointing, fearful of the apparition, but not able or realizing that he had to move out of its way and fast.
"There! there! They never cease! My enemies will not let me rest!"

Uther Pendragon was a man of two minds now. He still had times when he was lucid and focused, when he seemed almost like his former self. He wanted to take the throne again, to be the man he had been a year before. He would talk calmly, if still sometimes a bit tensely, with Arthur or Agrivaine, would seem close to normal.
But other times, he still was clearly mad. He ate very little, sometimes because he just didn't care and sometimes because he believed his food poisoned, despite the food tasters' assurances it wasn't. He was thin and gaunt, far too weak looking for his own good. He simply looked tired all the time.
Often, he yelled and cried out, fearing things that were only real in his mind. He failed to recognize visitors, insisting it was Morgana or Nimueh tormenting him again with magic. No weapon could be left near him because he would lash out with it, battling things only he could see and running a risk of harming anyone who came close. Sometimes he was found cowering in a corner of the room, screaming about magical attacks, sweating and panting from nightmares or hallucinations. Gaius's potions helped, but not as much as would have done him much good.
Now Camelot was under attack again, and he could do nothing to stop it. He wondered if he should even care, if he really had any reason to continue fighting. Arthur and Agravaine were there, surely they could deal with it. King Uther was not even certain why he was continuing on, and sometimes wished death would simply claim him already.

Digital spy teasers...glad they're back, I look forward to them.
1. "It's not something you can chase or something you can kill."
2. With a new series comes a revamped title sequence - it's still in the style of the old one, but you'll notice a few additions.
3. "His heart is ****** and his spirit is ****."
4. There's some obligatory shirtless Arthur action - for those of you who enjoy that sort of thing.
5. "I'm sure a man of your talents can think of something."
6. The Knights of Camelot are not above a little mischief.
7. "He is your ******* and he is your ****."
8. Morgana suffers from some rather troubling visions...
9. "I always thought if things had've been different, we'd have been good friends."
10. Camelot comes under siege once again, but this time Merlin's magic may not be enough to save it.
ALso there's an article out with word that Morgana kills Morgause.

Uther surmised it was her. The guards' shoes didn't make that kind of sound when they walked. He couldn't restrain his anger and lunged, even though he knew it was pointless. He did not waste a great deal of strength struggling, but he was glairing, the anger evident on his face, for all the good it did him.
"Yes, for you! This is what I feared all along. But I believed you better than this. I was too blind to your deception to see the truth. But you will not find yourself here again."Uther snapped."Arthur is still living and free. I do not care what the witch says, he is not dead."Nimueh kept hurling that at him,but he did not believe it, not as long as no body was brought in. And if you do not think he will destroy you to save the kingdom, you are wrong. He knows that you are a traitor, and although it will pain him, he will do what must be done.
"And, if he cannot kill you, then I will not hesitate. I know what I swore to Gorlois, even though he was not your true father. But I also swore to you that I would break that promise if you opposed me again, and I hold to that."
Uther watched, fully expecting her to kill him. "I would have believed you would have destroyed me by now. But obviously you wish to gloat and torture me first." he growled."Or order your guards to do so, at least.

Uther let his own servants tend to him briefly, though he would not have anything major done until after the meal. He was shown in and seated, still deep in thought. He often wondered whether he had made the right choices over the years. He had no doubt about his decision to bring Morgana here, but although he knew he could not tell the truth, part of him often wished it were possible. That they could have the relationship a father and daughter should. But, his concern for Arthur overrode all. He would not have Morgana challenge Arthur for the throne, would not see anything threaten his son's coming rule of Camelot. And he feared that Morgana might indeed try to kill him. He would have to be content with being her father in all but name.
He was pulled from his thoughts as she was announced and entered the room. Uther had begun sipping his wine, but he had been preoccupied thinking and had been just picking at his meal a bit. Trying to focus on the present, he nodded a welcome."Morgana. Come, dine...hopefully, after we have finished, you will feel even better."

Uther was still in the stage of fighting and struggling, though he did not foolishly waste too much energy on what he knew was futile. So far, he still had clothing and was being fed, though he refused to eat for the most part, fearing that anything brought down might be poisoned.
Camelot had taken every precaution against attack, by regular or magical means. But the troops who had used this cup of life were too powerful to stop since they could not die. Camelot's troops had been powerless, and so had he. They had taken over, with Morgana leading them. Somehow she'd discovered the truth and was determined to have revenge for it. The only hope now was that Arthur still lived.
She had not yet ventured down here as yet herself, but but he was being taunted and harassed by the blood guards stationed down here. Sometimes they threw things like people did at someone in the stocks. He'd been hit and kicked several times as well. They also seemed to enjoy suddenly awakening him with shouts or cold water, knowing obviously that it was taking a toll on his mind.
What he feared most was not knowing how far they would be allowed to go. Men of Camelot were expected to be proper and well behaved, even when tending the prisoners, but who knew what Morgana would allow? He could see the whip where it hung on the wall, and fully expected it to be used upon him. He also knew that there was magic among the group, and it would be easy for someone to torture him that way as well.

Uther, of course, could not read their minds, though he would say that there were a few good in Cenred's land-he recalled the pleas of Hunith when Cenred had refused to send help against the raiders. However, he took pride that there were many more decent people to be found in Camelot. He nodded in agreement with Caitrin when she said that she was glad not to have come from a land such as that.
"Yes, that would be a great shame...Such an upbringing has probably ruined many with great potential."Again, Vortigern popped to mind. He had the makings of a good king, but his desire for war was going to get him, and possibly Arthur one day, into trouble.
Rouland spoke of showing Caitrin of life in Camelot, and the king nodded again. "I am sure it will go well. I think that there will be others willing to aid with that. At least, it is my hope." There were a number of young men and ladies her age who would probably relish befriending her, and though he hoped to include Arthur and Morgana, it was not restricted to them.
Caitrin spoke again, saying she hoped not to disappoint. Uther replied "I am hopeful it will go well."Of course, Uther could not know of her secret, what she truly feared being discovered.

Caitrin said a bit more about the thirst for battle among the Mercians, including her father."It does seem that the Mercians are that way, I agree. However, they are not the worst I have had occasion to deal with. There are those who care more for war than the welfare of their own people, and it is disgraceful."
Uther mostly meant Cenred, but Vortigern wasn't going to be a great deal better. Cenred, however, was to be feared because of rumors that Morgause had been seen in his lands. The witch's power could easily combine with Cenred's army to put Camelot and other lands into a bad situation, and Uther worried greatly. Uther thought of Cenred as little better than a bloodthirsty barbarian, and sometimes he wished Cenred would give Camelot a reason to fight him, just to defeat him and be rid of him.
"I hope that I have. It is not easy, Camelot is under attack more often than I wish. Fortunately, we have shown our ability to withstand the intentions of our enemies. And as you say, I am certain Arthur will continue in that way."
"At least you appear to have benefited from your uncle's influence, despite your father's love for battle. He shows that one can do well for himself, even if the land he was raised in does not always have the best attitudes and beliefs. It seems that you will make a fine lady when you are grown."

Uther listened as the servant announced that dinner had been prepared. He had asked for this to happen; he knew they'd be returning rather late and would be ready to eat after they arrived back. Uther himself had been fortunate not to sustain a great deal of dirt or damage to his own clothes, so he chose to put off washing up until he ha eaten. Another of the servants divested him of his own cloak, and Morgana spoke up just after, saying she wanted to go get rid of her own cloak.
"Thank you, we will be coming in a moment." he replied to the servant and then turned his attention to Morgana."Of course. I will wait for you there. Shall I have an attendant sent to your chambers? I assume your maid has left for the day."

Uther understood the question, and why it had been asked. The prince likely had not been aware of the full story behind the incident, and he did have cause to question it. Uther had been worried about the possible effect on Camelot's image and reputation, and had feared a complete disaster most of the time while it was going on.
At first, Uther had not been certain if it was sorcery or something natural, but as time had worn on, and attempts to reason with Arthur had failed,it had become obvious that something was affecting both Arthur and Olaf's daughter.
"I understand your reasoning for asking such a question, but I assure you that he is of sound mind. That was an enchantment, both of them were under it. I was uncertain at first, but the more I observed the behavior of both of them, the more obvious it became. And by the time the duel ended, the enchantment had been broken and Arthur was thinking rationally again."Uther replied.
"I have little doubt that Arthur will be able to guard against any such occurrences in the future. He knows of the danger of magic, and the need to guard himself and Camelot against it."

Morgana apologized for what had happened with the attack, but Uther had mixed feelings all the way around. He knew that she was right about it not having happened if they'd stayed home, but he did not think she should blame herself either. Any king had his share of enemies, it was not a thing that could be avoided. And Uther's ban on magic had resulted in him being attacked more than many other monarchs probably were, unless they were brutal rulers like Cenred. And most of Cenred's people were either too busy fighting the raiders Cenred was too lazy to do anything about or too afraid to speak up.
"Do not blame yourself, Morgana. A man like myself takes such risks every time he leaves the safety of his stronghold. I am sorry that we lost two good men, that is true. But at least they died well. And you fought well. And ultimately, things corrected themselves, and for that I am glad."
Sometimes, he wished Morgana had been born a man, she was a strong willed woman and an adept fighter. That being so, however, he would have to live in more fear of another son moving against him than even her. He doubted little that she would be a formidable foe should she discover the truth and turn on him, but a son would have been even more fearsome.

Caitrin asked about the service to the court of the nobles in Camelot. She was correct about Mercia being so formal and few nobles interacting very closely with the king himself. Uther took a drink and then replied
"It varies among the families. Some do, some do not. Sometimes it depends on how large the family is. Since only an eldest inherits his father's lands, the others can be of service elsewhere."
Caitrin inquired about Camelot's motives and mentioned Mercia being very warlike. "It is wise to fight only when it is necessary. There are times when war is unavoidable. A kingdom must prove its strength and defend itself and its people when attacked. But, it is not wise to go into war too casually. Too much fighting would weaken the kingdom. I also see the benefits of a peaceful cooperation with other nations, if it can be agreed to."
Uther nodded at Caitrin's comment about Mercia being more lenient on magic, alert for her next words. But she did not speak against him, only said that things seemed better here because of the ban. Uther nodded his agreement."That is one of the reasons Camelot is strong. I will not allow its enemies ways to move against it. I prevent it from beginning."
Uther could see the similarities to his own upbringing when Rouland spoke. King Constantine had not been lenient on Uther because he was the third son. Dunmonia had been between the two kingdoms in its policies-not bloodthirsty like Mericia or Vortigern's kingdom, but a bit more militaristic and forceful than Camelot. Arthur was expected to prove himself a strong warrior and to be able to defend the kingdom and show that he was not weak, but he had to be wise enough not to make war without just cause."We wish Camelot's fighting men to have a balance, to be able to fight and defend, but not to become too devoted to violence. There is still a great importance on training and honing one's skills, but there is also a focus on using them properly and at the right time. I believe it is because I was brought up in an atmosphere that was between the stances of our kingdoms. Dunmonia was not militaristic to the point of your land or some of the other lands, but it was thought necessary to embrace war to a point. That held especially so for a third son such as myself. I believe it allowed me to become the warrior necessary to conquer a land of my own. However, I do not wish to see men of Camelot die without just cause, so I could not impart all of my father's ways to my son."

Uther did think they'd get on fairly well; he only wished Caitrin was of royal blood rather than simply noble, so that she could be a potential suitor for Arthur. Granted, he spoke carefully to Arthur of such things. He had little doubt that his son would do what was best for the kingdom, but it was obvious that Arthur wasn't happy with the idea every time it was discussed.
Uther was interested in the possibilities of what Caitrin spoke of. He was not looking to make war with Mercia anytime soon if it could be avoided. He knew that it was not in anyone's best interest to have a war that wasn't justified. However, he did rationalize that this could one day prove to be an advantage, having allies who were familiar with the country's customs.
"It is clear from past travels that Mercia is a more formal place even than Camelot...there are, of course, certain things that are universal, but the Mercians seem to be a bit stricter than those of Camelot. I should add that I am still hoping to one day in the near future hold a conference with the kings of the other kingdoms, a hope of agreeing on a peace for all of us. So, I would be quite interested in what you could tell me about your land's formalities."he said. Turning to Rouland, he said I'm also most interested in anything you might have learned during your time as a warrior."

Uther was still caught up in contemplating the days events as he and Morgana returned to the castle. Morgana's words still rung in his ears."You are like a father to me..." He did not enjoy having to live behind so many lies, to speak to Morgana as he had and so often did,but he feared the truth too much to ever speak it. Even Gaius did not know that he and not Gorlois was Morgana's father. Uther desired that it would stay that way as long as he lived.
He had suspicions at times about Morgana. It was as both of them had said earlier:She was strong willed and very much like him. And when she tested him and stood up to him as she so often did, he saw himself. Those words he spoke had been the absolute truth. Morgana was, indeed, very much like her father. Like Uther himself.
He knew she could one day choose to move against him, and if she discovered she was of royal blood, it would only bolster her confidence all the more. For now, in his mind, she was still loyal, as proven by her actions during the attack. But he never doubted how quickly that might change.
He also thought of what she had spoken of about the rumors, about the whispers that he had arranged Gorlois's death. It had pained him to do so, but Gorlois's suspicions had begun to rise. He had begun to ask too many questions. If he had confronted Uther, the king knew that he could not have raised a hand against his friend himself. In this way, he was not directly responsible, yet the secret was safe. He had longed to bring her to him and raise her as he should have, and after Gorlois's death, it had happened. Uther kept rationalizing to himself that it was best for all-he was raising his daughter, yet no one in Camelot knew the scandalous truth which would ruin him if it became known.
He watched Morgana, inwardly happy that she had inherited his confidence and strength, loving her deeply and yet fearing her at the same time.
"We certainly encountered more difficulty than we anticipated. But I am relieved that the wound caused by recent events now seems healed."he said.

"I suppose"said Uther."Arthur must see something in him that warrants keeping him around."
Yassia began to explain that Uther had inferred wrong assuming that she had been injured. It had actually been Merlin who was injured, and Yassia had tended to him. Obviously it could not have been extremely serious...Arthur knew that time couldn't be wasted on a severely injured servant when his own life was in danger and he could easily get another. He likely would inquire about it to Arthur later, just because although Arthur had told him about it, he could not recall everything that was said.
Yassia thanked him again and expressed thanks about her relatives and standing.
"I am certain you will. It will be greatly appreciated. And yes, fate has provided well for you."

"Yes, I am certain you will, in time, make the acquaintance of both the Prince and Lady Morgana. Your presence will be welcome."replied Uther, who then took a drink himself.
Rouland asked Uther then if he'd ever traveled to Mercia. In the past, he had, but not on good terms. Things had been strained for quite a while, and although he had gone to attempt peace talks a couple of times, he hadn't thought of things too favorably. In recent times, he hadn't gone there at all.
Rouland spoke of the difference in customs in Mercia, and Uther agreed."There are a number of differences, yes. It can make visiting or having visitors from there interesting at times."

Uther knew that Nimueh spoke the truth about what had happened to him. Or at least, part of him did. The rational part, the hidden portion of himself that had become dominated and overpowered by the idealization, the simplified rationalizations in his head which he used to justify his actions again and again. That part of him knew that things were often more than simply black and white, easily categorized as good and evil, right or wrong. But it had become too difficult after losing Ygraine to think in that fashion.
Uther's stubbornness and his refusal to complicate his thinking were why everything went in circles, every time Nimueh showed herself. He didn't think that would ever change, that he would ever change. It was easier this way.
"I suppose it will always be that way. I cannot easily let go of what appears true to me. I can only see what has proven true to me in my mind time and time again, and do what is necessary to stop it. To ensure that there is still a kingdom for Arthur to take over."

Uther listened as the prince spoke of conveying his wishes to his father. Aftward, Vortigern congratulated Uther on the peace talks. Uther had a lot of thoughts in his mind that he could not say out loud in reply. Vortigern might be talking about peace, but Uther knew that he wished anything but. Uther also had his doubts about whether or not Vortigern would honor the treaty being made once he took the throne himself. That would remain to be seen, though Uther was uncertain for how long exactly.
"It has not been an easy task. We are all very different in nature, and all very determined men. We agree on wanting to protect our kingdoms and peoples and wanting to prevent war if it all possible, but we have many different goals and viewpoints amongst ourselves. Finding common ground is an extremely difficult task. But, I do believe that all has gone quite well, despite the attempts to sabotage it. And, of course, some of the credit must also go to Prince Arthur, given that his actions also ensured success."

Yassia asked if Uther meant Merlin. Yes, that was his name. Uther nodded in reply.
"Yes, him. Whatever the reason, he seems to get into more than his share of problems. I wouldn't keep him around, but Arthur and Gaius obviously see something in him."
Yassia spoke some more, about her recovery and her upbringing. It was not the norm in Camelot, but Uther knew that customs differed in other lands. He was not going to argue it with her, as long as she was well behaved.
"You seem to have recovered well. And, although such things as you speak of are unusual here in Camelot, but not unheard of. As I suppose is the case in other lands as well. I will not forbid it as long as there is no embarrassment on your part. And I'm certain Gaius will appreciate the help."
