Merlin saw that he was failing to do... whatever it was that he was trying to do. He believed that he was trying to convince her that he was Merlin, but that he needed her to calm down and listen so that he could explain it to her in a less bizarre way... even though it would sound bizarre no matter what. He couldn't let her leave, it might make the situation worse, and he wouldn't be able to explain himself, or what had transpired here these past few moments. He didn't want to scare her further, and so he immediately let go of her like she wanted him to.
"Gwen, you aren't leaving until you listen to what I have to say," he informed. It came out like a statement, but it was more of a plea. He moved from his current position, over to the door, where he stood against it and stared at her with an expression that bordered on determination, and awkwardness at the whole situation. "I am going to tell you something very important... but I don't know how to put it, or if you will believe me." Or if you will even want to listen, but he didn't add that part aloud.

Despite his earlier worries that she had found out, now he knew for certain that she had. At least, part of it. She definitely didn't know he was Merlin. Now he wasn't so "oh my god, she's removing my clothing, what am I going to do?!" It was more of a "oh my god, she found out, she's freaking out, and this is awkward, what am I going to do?!" The first seemed much more pleasant right now. How would he explain that he was Merlin? He would seem strange, perhaps outright lying! After all, if she already was convinced that he wasn't Arthur... Why would she believe he was Merlin?
No! He couldn't let her leave and have it left like this! He didn't want her to wind up telling anyone! "Gwen, look, you have to listen to me!" he exclaimed, almost pleaded, with her as he reached out to grab her arm. He wanted to hold her to make sure that she wouldn't turn and flee, that he could get out all that he wanted to say. Even though, he still wasn't quite sure of how he was going to explain this and have her believe it. He had told her a lot of crazy things that might not have seemed true, but at least it was in his own body!
He didn't realize that to someone already in such a position, that this might be considered threatening.

"Thank you, Gwen. You're my best friend too." More than a best friend. Despite how much he wished she had told Arthur about him knowing too, instead of pretending to be the only person who had know, he did appreciate that she wouldn't. That was a trait of a friend, and a trait that Merlin appreciated more than he could explain with words. If he had to choose one event in his life to hold above all others, it was definitely the time he had come to Camelot -- he had never suspected to make such a great friend; to make such great friends.
He was pleased to see that his words cheered her up at least a little, which he could tell from her next words. He gave her a small smile and a squeeze on her shoulder to let her know that she had, and always would have, his support no matter what. She could always count on him, just as he knew that he could count on her if he had to. "Well, I try my best," he said lightheartedly.
Merlin knew that this would be a hard thing for her to pull through, to be able to accept that she was not to blame, at least fully. It was expected, especially with Arthur being mad at her. "Gwen, we will save Camelot, Arthur will save Camelot, and Morgana won't be the ruler any longer. And then things will go back to normal, or as normal as is possible for us. And you will be right back at Arthur's side, and I know that he will appreciate it. But you shouldn't be upset about not telling him. You had his best interest at heart, even if he doesn't see it right now. He'll realize this."
She also proved another valid point, there. "You're actually probably right about that," he said, making a face. "I think I will tell him, but I'm not sure about right now. On one hand, it might be good to let him soak everything in at once. On the other, well... It might make it worse."

Merlin wasn't able to do much to stop her without appearing strange...er, so he just stood there with his wide eyes and strange answering habits, letting her undress him, telling himself over and over that she wasn't taking off his armor, but Arthur's. Yes, this wasn't his body, it was Arthur's body. Except that when she got down to just the shirt, he froze even more. Arthur's body or no, he was still in it, and as of now, until they found a way to fix this problem, it was his.
Eyes only went wider as he stood there. What should he do now? His excessive stuttering continued, and he futilely fumbled with his hands to try and do it himself, at least, but was finding that his hands didn't even want to go that high! They didn't want to listen! Bad hands, bad! He took a deep breath to try and calm himself, but he was beyond that, it seemed.
"Oh, I know," he said, not recognizing the clever trap. "His men were everywhere, we thought that we would be capture, o-or worse! Killed!" NOT a pleasant thought at all! He gulped at this and averted his eyes from hers for some reason he wasn't consciously aware of. Really, though, it was because he couldn't stand lying to her.

Merlin sighed and remained silent a moment, trying to organize his thoughts to try to comfort her. "You know Arthur gets, Gwen, and you know his true self better than anyone. You know that Arthur just needs time to think this through. He won't stay mad at you, I've seen the way he watches you when he thinks no one is looking." Arthur wouldn't want to lose such a precious person to him, and that was exactly what she was. "These past few days have been really nerve wracking on all of us, most of all on him."
She had a point, of course. But she couldn't blame herself... "Perhaps you're right, Gwen, maybe he would have. But you can't blame yourself for what has happened. You didn't make her do what she has done, she has chosen her own fate... Arthur wouldn't want you to blame yourself had he not already been upset. The past is just that, past. We cannot change what has happened, only make sure that we do not make the same mistakes in the future and hope for the best."
Then he looked at her with a sort of sad, but comforting, exasperated but surprised stare. "Gwen, you should have told him. I wouldn't have gotten mad. If Arthur is going to know about you knowing, you shouldn't take all of the blame, I knew too." It was very kind of her, but if Arthur should know, he should know more of the full truth. He deserved that, now, at least. "Perhaps I should tell him."

He just continued to stand there, stuttering, unable to form a complete or comprehendable sentence as she removed the chest plate and began to remove the cuffs from his wrist and arm. He couldn't help but stare at her with eyes that bordered on the edge of panic. What was he to do? What was he suppose to do? What could he do? -- were all questions that ran through his mind in quick succession. There was also another one: how much further would this wind up going??
As she talked to him, obviously trying to calm him down -- which wasn't working -- he kept staring at her. Had she figured it out?! No, if she had, she would say something... Would she? Perhaps she wouldn't. Perhaps she wasn't sure if it was true, or just didn't want to say anything. "W-We... We were just attacked by Cenred," he managed to say. "His men." he added. "Not him."
Merlin was starting to sound like him? No, Arthur was starting to sound like him. No, that wasn't right either, Arthur we starting to sound like Arthur, but he was Arthur, so really Merlin was starting to sound like Arthur since Arthur was in Merlin's body, but it wasn't really Merlin, therefore he wasn't really starting to sound like Arthur and Arthur wasn't starting to sound like him... This only confused him further.
"There's n-nothing wrong," he said, but his eyes betrayed this lie.

Oh, he just knew that this wasn't going to work. He knew Arthur was in love with her, and they were... different with each other than they were around him -- to be expected, would probably seem awkward to the two of them --, but Merlin had no clue how to try to convince her he was Arthur and that he was being totally normal... This was definitely not normal! He had tried to be arrogant and failed -- he didn't know if Arthur was arrogant around her or not, but now that he thought of it, it would make sense that he wasn't! He had also changed his mind several times about his story of why he had ran from the knights, was probably not sounding too sick? Perhaps he should hack and wheeze... yeah, that might work.
"Not acting like yourself." "Should lie down." Yes! he agreed to that! Laying down, how would he be able to mess anything up? He watched her pull the covers down on the bed and then come back to him -- which is where he realized what could go wrong here as she spoke. His face turned a deep red and he tried to protest as she started, but all that came out was "G-G-G," as he tried to speak her name, growing tongue tied.

He looked at Gwen silently, not knowing how to respond. But he had to say something, but what? She had every reason to be upset if that was what she was, but she also had nothing to blame herself with, though. "Gwen..." He wanted to call Arthur a prat, to joke about it to try and cheer her up, but didn't know if it would help. This was something serious, this business that all revolved around Morgana... all of it did. "He's just upset over all of this stuff. He'll get over it."
Though... She was right; Arthur probably felt betrayed. Morgana had been like a sister to him, and the whole time, she had been lying to him. Had been using him. And to find out that someone else knew, even if for a little while... It had to hurt. But he didn't believe that if she had told him, that she could have prevented it. With one simple movement, Merlin leaned towards her and put his arms around her in a hug, unless she pulled back. "Gwen, maybe, but would Arthur have listened, or denied the truth of it? We both know him, he's a great person under all of those layers of arrogance he shows. He cared deeply for Morgana, we all did. If someone had gone to him, had come to any of us, and told us that Morgana was a traitor... would any of us believed them had we not known?" he asked gently. It was true, Morgana had been all of there friends, and then she changed. "Arthur feels betrayed, yes, but the betrayal of Morgana is weighing heavily on his heart... He's more angry at himself for not realizing it, then at you." Merlin didn't exactly know this, but he knew that a man who had just lost someone dear to them always felt some kind of internal grief.

Merlin looked around as he heard the laugh that echoed around the ruins. Nimueh was around somewhere, up to something, he was sure. Trying to play tricks was more like it. He wouldn't fall for anything she tried to pull here. The last time they met here, he had killed her. Surely she would want revenge? Or just try to do something... But he wouldn't let either happen, so he would have to keep his guard up. "Release Gwen, Nimueh!" he yelled angrily, looking around, trying to catch a glimpse of something that would reveal her position.
Lord of the Algae? Well, that was... a rather interesting title. He noticed something now, and blinking, he pulled the alga off of his shoulder and tossed it aside, looking around once more. Then she mentioned the sea monsters, and his face screwed up in an unpleasant look. He was glad that he was out of those waters, but if he succeeded here, would he have to swim again?
"I presume that they listen to you?" he questioned in a growl. "Why don't you stop playing games and show yourself, already?!" So that they could get this over with. Merlin didn't particularly want to stand here and have a conversation with the woman he considered his enemy!
And then she showed herself. He watched her intently, remaining focused lest anything happen that he would have to defend himself against. He wasn't about to just lay down and die for her, and she wouldn't be able to convince him to join her this time either, whatever tricks she tried! "I'm sure you assumed that we would meet again. After all, you are the revenge seeking type, Nimueh. What is your plan to kill Arthur this time?"

As Merlin walked past the cage, he was immediately surprised as someone sat up suddenly inside of it. He pulled back quickly, a natural reflex as he hadn't noticed the person before... It was a girl! She was bruised, and in shackles... He turned his head towards the Physician and exclaimed, "Gaius!" Why was she in a cage?
"She's fallen prey to a Bounty Hunter."
A Bounty Hunter was going after her? But... Why? She wasn't that old, couldn't have been that far from his age. Why would someone hunt her, and what did they plan to do with her? This was wrong, he told himself. She should be back with her family, or wherever she had been before she was captured!
"She's only a girl," he protested, looking back at her with worried eyes.
"She'll still fetch a good price, though."
"Someone's going to pay for her??" he asked with disbelief, snapping his head back to face him. To pay for someone, as if their life wasn't theirs... To be in such a situation had to be hard on the person, on this girl. He would never wish that on anyone...
"Uther offers a handsome reward for anyone with magic."
Of course, Uther. He should have suspected as much, that this girl had magic. Magic was treated as a curse, but it was not so. It was a gift, and yet people weren't allowed to practice it because the King outlawed it. One day, it would be allowed to return, but while Uther was King, anyone possessing it that was caught would be murdered... He couldn't allow this girl to die! He knew how it felt to have to hide your magic, to keep it secret in fear that someone would catch you. Looking at her was like... Looking in a mirror.
"There must be something we can do."
"Merlin! Bounty Hunters are dangerous men, they are not to be meddled with. You of all people should understand that." And with that, Gaius turned away and began to leave, as if the matter was settled.
He should know him better than that, Merlin wouldn't let this girl die, wouldn't let someone get money for such a vile act! He would save her, he would...

"The shut up part," he replied cheekily. Still... Merlin nodded with a resigned reluctant nod. He had a point. Yes, he could make his job a lot worse than he already did. Already did... He wouldn't usually admit it, but he enjoyed his job, from the chores -- though he could live without that part -- to spending his day with the Prince. But again, he wouldn't say anything, because if he did, Arthur might give him more chores! He gave Arthur a grin before turning his head to face forward, obviously not taking the threat seriously.
But when Arthur spoke again, Merlin's face twisted up with a strange scowl. Yes, he remembered that very much... It wasn't fun... "Well, Morgana came, so... I wonder if she ever ate that..." he pondered curiously, again his attention being drawn elsewhere. He did this purposely to try to drop the rat stew conversation, that stuff had been positively disgusting!
He should have known that his attempt to force Arthur to eat the bread would fail. But he had done it anyway. Feeling his arm twisted awkwardly behind him and Arthur shoving the bread into his mouth, he let go of the reins of his horse with his free hand and attempted to push Arthur off of him, making over-dramatic choking noises as he did so. When Arthur pulled back, Merlin purposely and childishly tried to spit the bread out of his mouth at Arthur.
When Arthur smacked him in the back of the head and rode off, Merlin rubbed his head and mumbled to himself, flicking his horses reins to make it follow at the same pace. "If you think that will make me shut up, you're wrong! It'll only make it worse! I will talk more now!" he called. Then, with an evil idea -- alright, not so evil as it just being a "prank" -- Merlin smirked and turned his gaze to a tree branch that Arthur would be riding under in a moment. "Forbærnen firgenholt," he mumbled under his breath, his eyes flickering gold as the tree branch snapped and fell.
Whistling innocently, he purposely acted suspiciously -- Arthur obviously couldn't connect him to the falling tree branch!

How much faster did he have to run?! Hurry it up? He wasn't going to be able to feel his legs later, he knew! They were going to feel like jelly! Which was not a pleasant feeling, to say the least! But he didn't want to anger the Prince further, not right now when he was already trying not to make the man hit him with knifes! So, with a quickly beating heart, he forced his legs to move quicker, to carry him around at a higher speed then was naturally healthy for him.
Kill two birds with one stone? Exercise? Wait... dogs?! His eyes went wide, and he shook his head quickly, as if to tell the Prince no. The Prince's dogs? The Prince's? Oh Lord have mercy... His jaw dropped when he saw the two large black dogs, which he founds positively alarming. There hadn't been many dogs in Ealdor, and those that were never were threatening unless they were provoked. But these were the dogs of the Prince, that would surely mean that they were threatening.
Unconsciously he took a step backwards, where he tripped on fell on his back, dropping the shield which rolled away from him. Scooting backwards frantically, he turned himself around and stood up just as the dogs came at him. Trained to kill since birth?! Oh my... Did that mean they would kill him if...
He spared no thought to turning and running for dear life, pumping his legs as fast as he could. He didn't want to die! Especially from two dogs! Merlin wasn't sure which were more frightening at this moment, the dogs, or the Prince! But he knew which of the two were the more immediate threat! Being a human chew toy was not his idea of fun! Far from it! If this kept up... he would wind up running straight out of these training grounds and seek refuge somewhere in the town if he had to! Perhaps he could lose them in the streets!
He glanced towards the nearest and best way to get back to the town. If he just ran fast enough... though his legs were already carrying him faster than they ever had!

Merlin finished with the makeup and set it down on the bed. He noticed that the Prince carried the bag that they had gotten their garments from. Raising a curious eyebrow -- he hadn't been paying much attention to Arthur when he had been putting on his makeup, therefore he was quite sure why Arthur carried the bag, nor that he had put their clothes in it -- he stared at the Prince with a sort of look that said, "What are you doing with that bag?" with a hint of amusement, as if it still held womanly clothing in it and that this was proof that Arthur did have a womanly side to him.
"Well, you sure know how to compliment a lady," he mumbled, tugging on his dress a little to re-situate it to a more preferable position. "Well, you aren't so pretty yourself, milady," the last word came out with mocking emphasis. He looked towards the door, then towards Arthur, and then back at the door. They were all disguised -- rather magnificently if he dare say so himself -- but a more pressing problem laid ahead: Could they pull it off. Arthur obviously wasn't the womanly type, they had to be able to act inconspicuously, lest Cenred's men recognize them. That would be bad, quite bad indeed!
"Do you think we're able to...?" he pressed, hinting towards the fact that they eventually would have to leave this room.

At Arthur's questioning -- was it rhetorical or sarcastic? -- of him "not letting" him ride of to take a death-test, Merlin nodded, smiling sheepishly at him. Of course he wouldn't let him ride off like that! Arthur was his friend, and not only that, but despite the man not knowing it, Merlin had to protect him! "Of course, you'd get bored otherwise," he answered, and despite his grin, he forced it to come out somewhat seriously and matter-of-fact, only adding to the ridiculousness.
"Of course you should stop underestimating me," was his reply to Arthur's partially-joking words. "Yeah, you're a clotpole for believing I would listen. When will you ever learn that I am not about to let that armor get ruined, I put too much time into it." Of course that wasn't his reason for coming, Arthur would know that, he had already pretty much stated that he had come here because of Arthur, not his armor. Merlin wouldn't have been able to sit back knowing that Arthur might die, worrying that he would die, waiting frantically for his return while putting a hole in his floor from scrubbing it so much because his thoughts were elsewhere!
Merlin didn't particularly mind if he ever saw Anhora again, though he agreed somewhat with Arthur's statement. If they saw Anhora again, it'd probably be because some fool killed another Unicorn. Hopefully that fool wouldn't be Arthur! Or better yet, hopefully there wouldn't be a fool at all! He knew, or suspected that he knew, why Anhora knew so much about him, however. Probably something to do with this whole "Emrys" thing. He still wasn't too sure how all that was suppose to work out, or why he was Emrys. "I couldn't agree more," he answered, though his tone was more thoughtful, more curious, as he was still lost in his thoughts.
He pulled back to reality when Arthur joked with him, and his grin returned to replace his thoughtful look. "Yeah, I've about had enough of washing your socks," he playfully agreed. When Arthur spoke again, with more sincerity, Merlin's smile also faded as he listened to his words. "Fine, it's not my duty," he agree softly. He remained silent a moment, then added, "It is my wish. Not to die, per say, but if my death meant you would live, then I wouldn't want it any other way. And not because you are a stubborn, egotistical prat... but because you are my friend."
[Maybeee! lol]

Merlin felt the icy chill of the lake, but kept going anyway. He had to pull through, had to get to the Isle. There was no going back, but he wouldn't have it any other way. Better him than anyone else, right? If he could manage to pull this off -- even better if no sea monsters attacked him! -- then at best, he would be lucky. If not, the worse -- which would surely happen if so -- would be... No, he didn't want to think of that! While he was willing to die here if that would have to be the price, he would not think of it! Death wasn't a pleasant thought, and right now, it was lurking all around him.
What if the sea monsters decided that he would make a good snack? How many people had they eaten in these very same waters? He didn't want to be food, he still had to complete his goal in coming here. And so, swimming through the waters that were so deep they were dark, he kept his mind on the task ahead lest he lose nerve and head back. However, the whole while, he was afraid that sea monsters might eat him. Even as he swam, he thought he felt the waters shift in an abnormal way, as if, perhaps, some creature, or creatures, were circling him far below.
Don't think about that, he continued to tell himself. Only worse that he could feel some kind of powerful magic within the water. Or perhaps, not magic, but some kind of raw strength that had to come from a sea monster, unless Nimueh could turn into one... Actually... that was worse...
Finally, he got to shore safely, and climbed onto land with a profound sigh of relief. Soaked to the bone, shivering, and still somewhat fearful of sea monsters, Merlin laid there for several minutes before he got the nerve to test his legs. Dripping tiny drops of water, he walked towards where he would suspect Nimueh to be if she was there: the place they had first fought.
Deep within the recesses of his mind, he could still hear her "last words" echoing to him, "Pity, together we could have ruled the world." Great... just what he needed, internal taunting when he was about to face the real woman herself.
"Nimueh!" he called, his tone irritated more than angry. He still wasn't happy about having to swim. He came into the ritual ground, which was just like he remembered it...

Arthur and Guinevère were in danger.
Merlin had overheard the conversation with Nimueh back in Camelot. Arthur was going to the Isle of the Blessed to face her and save Gwen from the malicious woman. He would die, Merlin was convinced, if he faced her. He stood no chance against the powerful Priestess of the Old Religion. Even he did not stand a chance against the woman. It had been luck that had helped him kill her the first time. He didn't know what he had done, commanding the power of Life and Death. He didn't know what he had done, and therefore, he couldn't do it again.
He had grown stronger, yes, but so had she. And she was more experienced than he. But at least he had magic, whereas the Prince did not. He knew very well that he might die here, but if Arthur was coming here, then his life was in danger to. He wouldn't let Arthur die, no matter how much the Prince wanted to save Gwen himself. He would solve this problem in his stead, or die trying. Whatever Nimueh's nefarious plan was this time, he had to stop her.
But he had to get there before Arthur could. Riding a horse would take longer, Arthur might catch up to him depending on how urgent he thought this, and how much danger he believed Gwen was in. And knowing Nimueh was involved, it was pretty urgent. He also did not want Arthur to catch up if he managed to get ahead, and stop him. He was determined to do this. When he said he'd give his life for Arthur, he wasn't lying, and he'd do the same for Gwen. He would do what was necessary to protect his friends.
The only solution was to get the Great Dragon to take him. He stood in the clearing outside of Camelot, looking up at the sky. He called the Dragon, summoned him with his powers of a Dragonlord. Circling the sky, the Dragon landed in front of him.
"What is it this time, young warlock?" he asked.
"I need you to take me to the Isle of the Blessed!" Merlin answered urgently, readily expecting him to take him. Of course, he also expected the Dragon to already know the reason why, but apparently he did not.
"I'm not a horse, Merlin!"
"If you don't," he said, pausing dramatically, "Arthur might die.."
"The last time I helped you by telling you of the Isle, you couldn't bare the consequences, Merlin." He knew that, but he wasn't willing to admit that. He knew that what he had done that time was the right thing.
"This is different."
That settled the matter and soon they were off, flying towards their destination. It didn't take as long to get there by flight as it would have by foot or horse. Eventually Killgarah landed and Merlin climbed off.
"This is as far as I go," he told him.
Merlin left him with a nod, than hurried off for the lake that would lead him to the Isle. However, when he was there, he noticed... there was no boat. His face scrunched up weirdly, as if to say "Oh, wonderful." and he glanced at the lake... There were rumors of Sea Monster in that lake! To get to the Isle, he would have to swim, it seemed! He tried a few spells to try and summon the boat if it was hiding, but if it was, no spells worked.
With a resigned sigh, Merlin put his felt the water, deciding that it was indeed cold, but knowing there was no other way. Without hesitation, because if he did, he would have a harder time doing it, he dived into the water and swam towards the Isle where, apparently, he was uninvited.
He hoped there were no Sea Monsters...

Oops... Well... did he go too far? Perhaps he should have...? No, that would have been awkward, at least for him, as he knew who he was and who he wasn't! To kiss Gwen just because he looked like Arthur would be inconsiderate. What if she found out he was Merlin? That would be like... betraying her trust, at least to him! He didn't want to do that! "There's nothing to apologize for!" he insisted. Perhaps Arthur might not know something was wrong -- or perhaps he would, he was in love with her after all -- but Merlin knew.
Oh, this was a tough one, now. He couldn't tell her that he was Merlin. It'd be complicated to explain. Confusing and embarrassing... And if would she even believe him was a totally different matter. "It wasn't bold... Erm... You didn't do anything wrong... I just... don't feel good, I don't want you to catch it." he used the same argument from earlier.
Merlin? Oh, wait... Arthur... "NO!" he exclaimed.

Oh, there had to be a way out of this! He couldn't kiss Gwen! It'd be awkward, whether he looked like Arthur or not! He thought of her as a sister, and he was not Arthur here, he was Merlin! Whether she knew it or not -- and she didn't! -- didn't matter! His heart was pumping so fast that he thought it might burst out of his chest! Which he prayed it wouldn't! That would be bad, very bad, indeed!
But he was so frozen in shock that he couldn't think of anything to do! He should run! Yes, that's it! He had to do something to get away from her! That was his top priority right now! So frozen as he was, that he could hardly resist her as she pulled him down for a kiss! And when she did, it took him several moments to register the fact before he pulled away hurriedly. "Gwen, I don't know if this is such a good idea..." he said, so frantic he called her like he usually did, and not like Arthur.

Time was running out for Camelot. It's days were numbered, it was weakened from the assault on its defenses. The people's spirits were low, there was talk of people in the outlaying villages going missing. To try to lift their spirits, a feast was going on in Camelot, in some ways this added to the chaos within the city, in others, it helped calm it down. To mask tragedy, one had to divert attention elsewhere. And that was exactly what was happening.
Though, whether or not it would help, was still a question that would have to be answered. As Merlin walked about the castle, trying to complete his daily morning chores, servants ran this way and that, preparing for the feast later that day. People carried food, others ran about with with decorations or dishes. The halls were crowded as people pushed, squirmed, and dropped things. He wasn't sure if the palace was the more chaotic, or the village.
Heading back to the Prince's chambers carrying the man's armor, he turned a corner to almost bump into a rather... strange looking man. Making a curious face at the red clad man with the funny belled hat. A Court Jester! Camelot had hired a Court Jester! Perhaps that would lift the people's spirits. Or... the "important" ones at least. He doubted that anyone but the nobles and other people who lived in the castle would be allowed to come. Standing out of the way of the silly dancing man, Merlin waiting until he passed before heading down the hall once more.
He never noticed the man turn to look at him.
* * * * * The feast was a happy one, it seemed. People were chattering, eating, and altogether having a happy, jolly time. Merlin stood against a wall, away from the main host. He had been permitted to come for two reasons only: Gaius was his guardian, and he was Arthur's servant. He was actually rather amused by the whole going-ons. And only more so when the Court Jester from earlier came in.
"Leofrick the Court Jester at your services, your majesties," the man said as everyone went quiet to watch, bowing so low that his belled hat hit the floor! "It is an honor to be here. I will lift the hearts of your people!
"Sire," Leofrick turned towards Arthur. "I have a riddle for you. If you answer correctly, you will be rewarded!
"This thing all things devours: Birds, trees, beasts, flowers; Gnaws iron, bites steel; Grinds hard stones to meal; Slays king, ruins town, And beats high mountain down."
After he was done, he waited expectantly, watching the Prince.

Merlin stood off to the side as Gaius checked up on the man laying in the bed. He had caught some kind of fever or something, he wasn't quite sure, but he knew he was sick. Gaius had given him some kind of remedy to help him pass through whatever was wrong, and finished talking with the man's wife that was also in the room. It was raining outside, which only darkened the night's already grim setting.
He looked back as Gaius checked the sick man one last time before backing up, ready to leave. Merlin, who was holding Gaius' over-jacket, slipped it over the man's arms helpfully so he could wear it, then turned around to grab the Physician's supplies bag. "If he's not better in the morning, let me know," Gaius informed the woman as they headed for the door. He opened it and held it open for the man, who took the bag from him. Shrugging, Merlin closed the door behind them.
They walked at a decent pace, heading back for Gaius' chambers to get out of the rain. Taking a route that would lead them past The Rising Sun inn, which would take them back quicker, Merlin noticed a cage sitting out front of it. He glanced at it once, then continued to follow Gaius, who didn't seem curious at all. He must know what it was for, he decided. He looked away and began to walk past it, not noticing the girl inside just yet. . .
