"If I am a madcap, it is only because you drive me so completely mad." Alex replied cheekily and grinned. Only Brynn could cause him to forget what happened just outside of the castle walls, or rather inside them now. Alex knew that perhaps it was in poor taste to feel any joy at all at the moment, but it was hard not to when Brynn was so close. At her request to not change Alex merely continued to smile. His mother had told him quite frequently that he should do quite the opposite and give her enough silence so that she could hear herself think.
"Ah, but even in silence, do eyes not speak as much? Though I may speak an hour on the lovlieness of your eyes, are they not the food for such musings? If you could read my glance, would it not tell you that I am loathe to wallow in silence when I could hear your voice? But then my logic has gone in a circle and now I have lost my train of thought. So you see, you must continue to speak for I am lost without you to interupt my aimless chatter." He spoke rather whimsically. Alex wasn't even sure he could follow his own logic at times but it filled the silence and kept the illusion that there was no clashing of swords outside and that Camelot was as it used to be. Perhaps the words were confusing, but they let him escape from the truth that hovered just out of reach.
Alex could see Brynn was worried when her mother entered. He could feel the same creeping of fear in his own body. When her mother asked him if he would keep Brynn safe his eyes hardened with determination. It was a rare moment in which Alex's features were still and serious. Not often did he ever portray this kind of calm, but the topic of Brynn's saftey was not one he could laugh at.
"You can be assured that no harm will come to her. You have my word." Alex said. His tone was even and controlled even though the very thought of something happening to Brynn had his stomach in free fall. Brynn's mother's words had him on sudden edge and also left him wondering why the question was asked. It did not bode well and left him with a feeling like they were standing on quicksand and would only realise what it was when it was too late.

[Time Frame: Sometime around S2E3-ish]
Perhaps it was the fact that the weather was quite beautiful that day or that Alex was in a particularly jovial mood that day, but noon found him strolling outside with little purpose in direction. Juggling three apples, Alex didn't much pay attention to where he was going. He didn't expect many people to be roaming in the courtyards at the time anyway. Either they were working or had journeyed outside the castle walls to truly enjoy the day. Alex himself might have gone down to the town to see his family, but he knew that his parents were pretty busy running their bakery for the day, and his little sister Lita was at a playdate with a friend.
Alex found himself whistling slightly as he tossed the fruit back and forth in the air. He had been in a great mood recently due to the time he spent around his girlfriend Brynn. She never failed to leave him smiling and Alex couldn't help but spread his good mood around. Earlier that morning even the chef had found himself tapping his foot along with Alex. The sun was currently giving the air a nice warmth that had Alex rolling his sleeves up before long. The heat had him glancing upwards at the sun with a grin. His eyes started to blur slightly from the direct light and he laughed as he dropped an apple due to the temporary mar of his sight. "Ah, sun. You may try to bedevil me with your rays, but know that I am on to you. I shall simply have to leave my eyes closed!" With this statement he picked up the apple and closed his eyes. Still humming, Alex began to juggle again. Years working in the palace kitchens had given him good reflexes and a penchent for tossing things around. He hadn't dropped a dish or fruit yet, but he also usually had his eyes open. He trusted his instincts and let his hours of practice dictate when to let his hands dip and throw the apples. Getting into the rythm was easy enough and he didn't have the light bothering him anymore, but unfortunately he also could not see where he was going.
He must have made an amusing albeit strange sight as he was. Apples flying and head nodding back and forth as he hummed to a nameless tune. However, anyone who knew him wouldn't be surprised in the least. It was quite common for Alex to be eccentric, and this was just another day.

Alex laughed a bit at her response. He knew that she had always carried the weight of watching over her siblings with her. He could relate to it when he thought of his own need to watch over Lita. He also found it rather cute that she thought this made her boring when in fact he admired her all the more for it. He thought a moment before he replied. "I am glad you are so down to earth. It is all the better that you hold me here when I feel like I could fly every moment you hold me." Alex said with a small grin. Even in terrible danger and with the wight of the world hovering, Alex could not resist giving a bit of his normal teasing. He always referred to Brynn as his angel, so it was ironic that he felt like the one floating.
She loved him. It was all he could do not to stand and spin her in dizzying circles as he had the night they met. At that moment Camelot could fall to ruin and Alex would not blink an eye. Guilt coursed through him as soon as he thought this, but he was utterly distracted not a moment later. "You need not tell me any more, for I feel as if my very heart would explode if you made me any happier." He said fervently. He could not help himself and kissed her again. If it were possible, Alex would never let her go. Reality forced him to lean back again, but every minute was a strain against his impulse to hold her close again. From the way that Brynn leaned in as well, Alex could only guess she felt similarly. If Alex had not already known that she had his heart so irrevocably, the way he felt when he looked upon her now would have left him with not a single doubt.
A blush heated Alex's cheeks as he heard the door open and turned to see Brynn's mother. He instinctivly went to back away from Brynn, but stayed in place when he decided he did not care. He was embarrassed that they had been seen, but he resigned himself to the fact that parents were invented solely to interupt their children in the worst possible moments.
At Brynn's mother's words, Alex's heart dropped into the pit of his stomach. So Camelot had indeed been breached. Alex reached out and took Brynn's hand in his own, while he calmed himself by remembering that his family and Brynn's were all right for now. Once again he sent a quick prayer for her father. "Then we must keep our candles lit so they may see us through this dark hour."

((Back!!!!!))
For a moment after he had spoken, Alex had wondered whether he was moving too fast. When Brynn didn't pull away or freak out at his wish to never leave, Alex felt his smile grow. He was sure that nothing could ever truly make him leave his behind. The bond was one he would never test, although he knew it could stand against anything. "Neither could I. Come soldiers or angry geese." He replied lightly. He tried to keep the mood clear from the thick fear that seemed to hover around them a careful distance away. It crept close but never seemed to get its grip on Alex. He figured he was a bit too preoccupied simply observing Brynn. Or perhaps it was simple denial that everything they knew might change starting tonight.
"You will never be boring." He responded seriously. His voice got a bit deeper as his smile remained in place. Alex barely blinked for fear that Brynn would disappear the moment he looked away. He could not even fathom a day where he would not want to see her. He barely had moments without her where it wasn't her face that drifted through his thoughts. Where her voice wasn't always in the back of his mind. It almost scared him how strongly he held her so close to his heart. It was something he had never felt before and it left a strange dropping sensation in his stomach that was not all that uncomfortable. When she called herself clingy Alex merely tilted his head and laughed softly. If she was clingy then he was as clutching as a vine up the castle walls. Alex guessed that in that way they were a completely perfect match.
She responded to his kiss and he grinned into her cheek. Alex pulled back to look at her. He waited fr a long moment before he spoke. When he did speak it was barely audible. "I love you... In a scary 'sing songs and hold flowers outside your window' way." He said with all of the tact he could possibly manage while he held himself back from kissing Brynn again. Something just made him have to say it. He couldn't stop the words from spilling out, nor did he want to stop himself.

"I hope indeed that I may retain you trust for all the time to come." Alex replied quite gravely. He found that he did have the capacity to be serious in some matters. His loyalty to Brynn was definitely one of those matters. He found himself smiling despite the overwhelming urge to remain completely straight faced. Camelot might be shaking at the moment, but to Alex everything seemed still. As if time had decided to cease existing for a moment. There was only the silence of the room and the familiar feel that was his own heartbeat. Not in all of his life had he felt so settled. Perhaps it was ironic that in a moment of chaos Alex was finnaly sure of his center of being. However, it was hardly surprising that something odd happened to Alex. He never did much properly anyways.
"If you say I can do no better, then I am content. Allow me to do you this service in all times to come." He replied with his old smile. He still felt a bit useless hiding away, but he figured that with Brynn looking at him like that, it was nigh impossible for him to look away, let alone leave. Thousand pound lead weights could not have kept him attached to that spot any better then Brynn's gaze. He was affixed in that position and completly captive to her will. He was oh so willing to do so. With a word he would stay by her side as long as she wished him there.
Somewhere in his mind Alex found himself amused that Brynn had done what no one else could. Alex for once was quiet and sitting still. His mother might die of a heartattack if she saw such a thing. He knew for certain that at the very least he would never hear the end of it. His mother would also love Brynn even more, if that were even possible at this point. Alex sometimes wondered if she loved Brynn more then him. Not that he could blame her. He loved Brynn more then himself as well. It was hard not to when every breath he took an every thought he had was centered on her.
Alex did not respond but gladly took Brynn up into his arms. He let them encirle her and drew her in a close as physically possible. He almost lost himself to her and only the cold floor against his shoes kept him grounded. If anything, he would rather he end up lost indeed. He moved his mouth to kiss her jaw and then her cheeks, before returning to her lips. It was all he could do to just continue to reassure himself she was still there.

"I will always be there for you. Come what may." Alex said softly. He noticed the way it seemed difficult for Brynn to talk and moved slightly closer to her. He raised his hand and gently touched her throat as if to will it better. Seeing the tear that followed her words, he brought the hand up to brush it away with the tips of his fingers. He did not speak in that moment, for he could not find anything to say. He did not think words could do the emotions he felt justice. Along with the prominent feelings of anger and worry, he felt a surge of terrible joy that he could bring her comfort. He did not think it appropriate for him to linger on how he made he worry slightly less, when everyone was still in such great danger. However, when he looked at Brynn with his hand still lingering on her cheek, he could manage one of his brightest smiles. In and of itself, that was no surprising thing. Alex could always manage a smile for Brynn.
Alex chuckled at Brynn's next words. He found a moment to compose an appropriate answer as he lowered his hand to rest at his side. "I do believe the kingdom would crumble in on itself if it lost its people. And with our most insidious queen, that cannot be far from a possibility." He responded. Alex was sure that it would not be long before Morgana faced true resistance at every turn. Camelot's people were stronger then anyone ever could know, and they knew their true leader was out there somewhere waiting to return. No indeed it could not be long now. Alex also felt a bit on edge as they talked. It was possible that they could be overheard even here. To be caught was to sign their own death warrant. Morgana was not a merciful queen. However, Alex had never been one for caution and did not bother to steer the conversation onto safer ground. In these times there was only the thin illusion of saftey anyway.
At the sound from the doorway, Alex turned quickly. His motion was out of pure instinct when he moved his own body to shield Brynn from the new entry. He put one arm in front of him as if to ward off any threat, but lowered it when he saw who it was. "Gwen..." He said in an echo to Brynn. Alex let his shoulders untense and stepped slightly to the side. However, he still stood a bit in front of Brynn. He might trust Gwen with his life, but that did not mean he would completely let down his guard. Gwen might not be completely alone. He also realized that Brynn was still partly undressed so that he could fix the bandages. It was enough to make him slightly embarrassed, but he didn't show it much. Instead he tried for a smile. He couldn't help but feel glad to see that Gwen was unscathed. He had not seen her close since Morgana's rise to power. It was a relief to see her well. "You are alone?"

Alexander saw hints of something he was recently beginning to understand himself in Gwen's face when he spoke of the Prince. He generally stored it in the back of his mind and did not pry. He honestly believed it to be none of his business and would not say something if Gwen did not bring it up herself. He knew that she would keep his secrets, and so he would return the favor by not trying to weedle out her own or jump to false conclusions.
"Humbleness is perhaps only a sign that one fully understands the balances in his self." Alex said in a mock tone of great wisdom. Alex never took the time to philosophize and would be quite bad at it if he did. His thoughts moved to quickly to linger on such complicated things as internal review. So he merely spoke words in a style that made them out to be more complex then they were. It was all part of his wit in the end. Usually he could get away with it.
When Brynn spoke again he grinned. Happily ever after seemed to be slightly closer as seconds ticked by. Perhaps he was being a bit silly, but he thought for a moment that his feelings were reflected in her face. Although he could just be imagining it. "That is if he continues to never drop a dish. If he does then ever after might be a bit shorter then originally intended." He replied with a laugh. Even though the chef was always threatening him, it was in jest... most of the time.
The next words seemed a bit forced and Alex furrowed his brow just slightly in confusion. It was hardly visible for the second it lasted, and then he smiled again. He noted her words on getting what he desired and his response slipped out before he could stop himself from speaking. "You promise?"

((Yeah, Gwen can post after this one.))
Alex was glad to see the wound was not bleeding as much, and he couldn't be more grateful for the first aid he had learned from his mother when he was smaller. Working in the kitchens he had never expected to have to deal with more then a few cuts, but none the less he had begrudgingly listened. Now he felt it was probably one of the most important things he had ever learned in his life. Alex found it amusing that Brynn had picked up a few curses somewhere. He would have teased her if they were in a different situation. Instead he just stored the info away for later. He figured he couldn't bring himself to really tease her now anyway. She was injured and Alex was still trying to calm down from the whole scare. The fact that she wasn't covered up very well hadn't escaped his notice. However, before he had been too worried that she might be seriously hurt to even think about it. Now he was a bit too relieved to let it get to him. He tried to just not think about it and succeeded for the most part. They could save that sort of thing for another time. Right now Alex just wanted to get through the day with no further injuries to either of their persons.
Brynn seemed to be a bit uncomfortable so Alex kept his eyes on her face to reassure her. He met her eyes before he spoke. "Let's not think of what ifs. All that matters is that you're safe now. Nothing else." He said seriously. He couldn't even bring himself to contemplate what might have happened if he had been to slow, or the bolt too fast. Brynn spoke again and Alex hurried to reassure her that it was not her fault. "It isn't your fault that you couldn't move. That happens to everyone in that situation. When I faced that skeleton thing, I almost couldn't move." He would not have Brynn going through any more trauma today, emotional or physical.
When he saw a brief and small smile Alex returned it with one of his own. He was glad he could help at least a little. "Let the nobles have their entertainment. I want no part in it now." Alex said a bit sternly. He was quite tired with always seeming to get caught up in the troubles of the nobles of Camelot. He didn't think fighting skeletons and dadging crossbows was all that fun. However, he gave another smile to show Brynn he was still just kidding for the most part. "Our so called Queen is no tyrant. She's a monster. If there is anything I can do, then I shall do it." Alex said with a fervour that surprised even himself. He had never really been much of a proactive person as far as fighting went. He was content to merely defend those he loved when it was absolutely necessary and never throw the first blow. This, however, was something Alex deemed absolutely necessary.

"When the Prince and Sir Leon fight, I do believe the outcome will be the tournaments winner, even if it indeed comes to early." Alex replied. He knew there were many other skilled fighters also here, but everyone knew who the best were. Alex would not be surprised if the final match was the one everyone predicted it would be. However, even though everyone was quite sure of the outcome, there was still the suspense of each fight. Every battle had people on their toes wondering if this tournament would have a different end.
Alex grinned as he thought about his own antics in the kitchens. He really couldn't help himself sometimes. The looks the Chief Cook gave him were the high point of his day. Not the mention it lightened everyone's mood when they had so much work to do. "Then I do believe I hold the tournament tittle for dish tossing." Alex proclaimed proudly. He also turned to Brynn at her comment and tried to give her his brightest smile yet. Even remembering the night before gave him a strange lightness. At times it was as if he would simply float out of his seat and be lost to the skies forever. "I would do a thousand spins for your cheers." Alex said in a slightly quieter tone then he had used before. He also almost blushed at his own words but tried to save face. It wouldn't do to embarass himself so fully that he would be unresponsive for the next hour.
"The Prince? Ah, I met him for the first time a few months back during the famine. I was a lowly kitchen boy whom was known only for his chatter." Alex started. His voice took on a quality like that of a storyteller, quite similar to when he told Lita bedtime stories. "The Prince was in great worry, for his bright city was in grave peril. He knew he must find a way to help his people. However, he also knew that he could not supervise the rations at the same time. So he looked into the kitchens and plucked out that same chatty boy and put him in charge of the entire thing. It was this oppertunity that showed that the kitchen boy could indeed handle pressure. And to this day the Chief Cook only gives him looks while he flips dishes instead of firing him." Alex finished with a slight gesture to indicate the story was over.
"In all honesty, when I met him, he seemed the most down to earth person I've ever met. You can tell from a moments conversation that he truly cares about his people. That is what will make him a great king." Alex said quite seriously. In many ways he admired the Prince. It was the Prince's ability to relate to the people that was, in Alex's eyes, his greatest asset.

Goodbye

Hearing her laugh was almost sadder to Alex. Even now she tried to make him feel better. He could simply not imagine not seeing her everyday in the future. Who else would straighten him out everytime he got jealous of other men around Brynn? Alex could not imagine a future where Gwen wasn't the cool aunt that his children insisted on seeing every other day. Alex could see the way Lita would grow up always trying to emmulate Gwen and Brynn in whatever they did. Lita was already enamored with the two older girls, and Alex could not see himself explaining why Gwen could no longer see them.
"And then we can supper at my home." Gwen had said. Alex knew that it was silly to play pretend like they were, but he could not bring himself to shatter the illusion. So instead he nodded.
"I'll make something nice, and you can have the night off. You work too hard anyway." He said. He could do no more then give a half hearted chuckle, but he tried none the less. He already thought of what he could make. Perhaps he could convince the head chef to let him use the spices from the kitchens. Plus there were always nice ingriedients to be found in the markets near their homes. Of course he would bring fresh bread from the bakery.
"We'll invite Brynn and everyone else we know. It can be a welcome home party." He said. Perhaps it was silly to hope, but it was all they had left. He felt her wipe away a few of his tears and smiled gratefully at her. He could not think of a greater sister to have found.

When Gwen touched his shoulder, Alex was reminded of how silly he was being. Jealousy would not win Brynn over. He also smiled at Gwen's choice of who to cheer for. Alex had only ever seen the Sir Leon around, but he had always seemed like an upstanding person. He also was glad that he had helped Gwen gain her position since it indeed had led to them meeting and becoming friends. He took no mind to her second choice other then to wonder if she knew the Prince due to her position. He figured she would know him better then most servants excluding the prince's own. It was common knowledge the Lady Morganna was close to the Prince.
"I believe Arthur would have my cheers. I've had the occasion to meet him, and he once did me a great service." Alex of course was referring to the very first time he had ever seen the Prince up close. He had been a servent for not a long period of time and it had been a time of famine in Camelot. No one had known what to do and the stores had been chaos. The Prince himself had left Alex in charge, despite his low station. The following conversation had left Alex an admiration in the future king. The least Alex could do now was cheer for him.
Despite Alex's distraction with his jealousy, he was hyper aware of Brynn's presence. That she was sitting next to him did nothing to lessen the nervousness he still felt. In order to keep it at bay he smiled brightly, this time more honestly. He did not catch Brynn's own jealousy, and continued to try and be as charming as he could be. "I do wonder if I were a great knight whether I could too have such lovely spectators to cheer for me." He said with a chuckle. Somehow he could not picture himself in armour or with a sword. He was much more at home with a pot and a ladle. He would give himself two seconds in battle with the contestents of the current competitions. During those two seconds he would most likely trip over his own weapon.

"Some say that trust is the foundation of love." Alex said simply while giving a small smile. He knew he had changed since meeting Brynn. No longer as flighty as he used to be, and only flirty with her. When she entered a room he looked nowhere else, and he found he did not want to look elswhere anyway. Alex believed he had changed for the better, and he knew his mother would certainly agree with him. His family as a whole had taken an instant liking to Brynn. They liked that Alex had something steady and grounded in his life. That, and Lita was starstruck by the older girl. She even endevered to wear her hair the same way.
"I will do the impossible if it makes you happy." He said quite seriously. The trip had indeed been dangerous, but he would do it again in a heartbeat. The risk had seemed little when he thought that Brynn might be hurt or in trouble. It was only when he arrived that his extrme luck in reaching the castle had struck him. Any misstep would have been utterly disasterous. However, Alex had never been one for thinking before he rushed into action. He might have changed, but not that much.
Alex felt Brynn kiss his cheek and realised that meeting her was one of the most fortunous things that had ever occured to him. It was luckier then his miraculous journey to the castle. He chuckled softly and took her hands into his own before speaking. "Trust you to be the strong one. I should most likely be embarrassed, but I think I shall save that for another time." He said in response to her. He had only ever cried in front of someone once since he was a very little child. It had been when he thought he would lose his honorary sister to a false accusation. He had not thought he would shed tears again, but perhas he had thought too soon.
Alex leaned into Brynn and ignored a particularly loud crash from outside the castle walls. He ignored it because at that moment it was irrelevent. Perhaps the gates were now open, but he did not think to move. He doubted whatever political sturggles were occuring that two servents would be dragged into it. However, he knew the instant he heard something inside the castle he would then get them safely hidden. He would not put Brynn in any kind of danger.

Alex had seen Camelot in worse situations. However it was funny, that none seemed worse at the current time. He could say that having a dragon destroying Camelot was the worst thing possible, but having a dragon reigning over Camelot seemed just as bad. Alex was also sure that the moment Brynn had been injured, he had felt as hopeless and afraid as he had ever felt. This including the time he was faceing an undead skeleton. As Alex threw the bolt across the kitchen and held some cloths to the wound, his focus was as steady as a rock. Even if the rest of his emotions were fraying and unraveling.
Brynns cursing was almost enough of a shock to pull him from his reveries. He had always known Brynn was no soft spoken slip of a girl, but he had certainly never heard her speak the way she did now. If anything it made Alex prouder of her. He also wouldn't mind if those curses came true. Never a violent person, Alex didn't think he had ever thought about killing anything. However, it was hard not to imagine pouring boiling water over their current monarch's head. But no matter how much Alex believed she deserved it, he knew it was not in him to kill. Perhaps maime a bit, but never kill.
Alex placed Brynn's hand over the cloth so that he could retrieve the boiling water. He soaked a few strands of bandage in the water and laid them out to cool. Returning to Brynn He took over holding the cloth. He faced her and leaned against the counter heavily. "Thank the heavens your all right..." He breathed out. Alex did not think he could ever go through this again, but with the way things were he could not see avoiding such situations.
"Let us agree, that we never want to do this again." He joked weakly. His eyes were half lidded as he smiled slightly. Relief was so evident on his features that for a moment his worry was gone. Brynn was going to be ok and there was no present danger at the time. This was a very much needed break from the crazy happenings all around them. Alex made a note to himself that he would not be going to anymore public events while their current Queen was in power. Even if they weren't optional. Somehow getting shot with crossbows was a bit far from the normal welcomed festivities.

Alex did not think he could bear Brynn's cries of pain. If there was a way to take the pain from her onto himself Alex knew he would not hesitate a single moment. Every time she made a noise of agony, Alex found himself gripping her waist a bit tighter, but he always managed to be careful to not cause any more discomfort. The blood was barely getting through the makeshift bandage which was a good sign, but it still did nothing to spare Alex's nerves as he finally got Brynn into the kitchens.
Thankfully there seemed to be nobody there as they entered. Alex was sure they were all either in the towns with their families or watching the chaos outside. He would not be surprised to know that they all had found places to hide after the events that happened in the courtyard. A queen who shot at her subjects could not be trusted to treat her servants well at all. Alex could not wait for the day the pretender who sat on the thrown fell. When she did, you could bet Alex would want to help at least a bit.
Alex had noticed that at one point Brynn had slipped into unconciousness. At first it was a relief to know she might not be in as much pain that way, but Alex also worried it might indicate a larger problem. However, she regained conciousness near the kitchens and Alex almost sighed a bit in relief. Instead, Alex moved her to a low table and lifted her onto it. He kept one arm around her waist untill he was sure she would not fall and he lowered her gently onto the table. Alex turned to grab a few bandages from a pantry immediatly to the left of the table and returned to Brynn in moments.
"Don't worry, you're ok now. I know it must hurt, but just know that I won't ever let anything happen to you." He said to her softly as he moved away for a brief second to put some water on the still burning fire, o that it would boil. He didn't want to leave a chance that her wound would get infected. He returned to Brynn's side to wait until the water was ready and he could let it cool. He took a small look under the makeshift bandage and saw that his original assesment was right and that it was a relatively minor wound. He knew however the difficult part was going to be removing the bolt that was still there. Alex almost couldn't do it.
"I am so sorry but this is going to hurt. You just look at me and hold my hand, alright?" He said and let his left hand graps Brynn's. He reached with his right hand and took hold of the corssbow bolt. He hesitated slightly and looked to Brynn. He was glad to know the wound was smooth and he felt the bolt come out easily, but he could not imagine how it felt.

Perhaps what pained Alex the most was that, after his father's death, he only nightmares had always been about losing his mother or his little sister Lita. After his step-father came into the picture, the nightmares had stopped. For a while Alex had not thought that he had to worry for his family so much. Now it was as if the world had decided to play a joke on him that was not even remotely funny. The ones he had worried over for so long were not the ones that he had needed to fear for. Lita might be safe, but he was still about to lose a sister.
Gwen's words helped Alex a bit, but it was only a shallow comfort. It was still an ugly reminder that he could do nothing to help but hope. Alex felt a bitter resentment toward the king and towards the whole kingdom as a whole in that moment. During the great Dragon attacks Alex had seen Gwen doing her best to help the injured people of Camelot, and now they abandoned her. How quickly those you trust seemed to ready to fail you. Alex did his best to hide the feelings from his expression and tried to give a reassuring smile. It could not have looked like much of a smile, and most likely came out as a bit of a frown.
"If I stopped making a fool of myself in front of Brynn then anything is possible." Alex said with an attempt at his usual humour. It fell a bit flat. His voice shook slightly and he still felt the threat of tears right above his lower eye lashes.
"This time tommorrow we can laugh over the dishes. I even promise I won't juggle them this time." He said. This time a sad smile managed to grace his features momentarily. He felt a tear leak but made no move to wipe it off. Alex also felt his hands slip off the bars to rest on his knees where the knelt into the ground. He knew he must look a bit of a mess in his disheveled state, but he doubted anyone would dare to speak to him when he left. Perhaps out of sympathy, or perhaps because they knew they would recieve no jovial answer as per usual, and that was to chilling an idea to contemplate.

"Then I believe we shall be alright, for I have learned quite well when to stop speaking." Alex replied with a small smile. He was glad that even in this dark hour they could still find it inside of themselves to uphold their banter. It said far more of them then any fake assurances would. It let Alex know that there was still hope, despite the seemingly overwhelming odds. He could take comfort knowing that no matter what was happening, Brynn would still be there with him.
Alex knew that this fight was different and that many believed all might be lost, but Alex had been around long enough to know that there was always a light to guide Camelot out of peril. Alex knew that somewhere out there Arthur was still alive. That alone gave him hope. While there were still people like Arthur and like the others who bravely fought for Camelot, there would always be a way to a better future. Alex could never bring himself to believe in no win scenarios. It was not in his nature to give up, even when the battle seemed already lost.
"If I am helping even a little, I am accomplishing my goal." He said into Brynn's hair as he held her close to him. For some reason Brynn always smeeled like a breath of fresh spring air, even when they were indoors. It was a comforting scent that made Alex smile slightly. When Brynn spoke of her father, Alex nodded and again pulled back to look at her. His eyes were defiant and his voice was filled with certainty when he spoke. "Your father is one of the bravest men I know. I am confident he will return." Alex smiled and then pulled Brynn back into a hug. He felt himself put every ounce of his being into praying that Brynn's father would be alright. Alex found himself slightly surprised to feel small tears gather and linger at the corners of his eyes. He let them fall without a sound.

Alex did not believe he was as modest as the Prince said he was, but he did not say anything. Alex had never been good at recieving praise of any kind, and he also recognized the fact that he did not give himself very much credit. However, he would find time to reflect inwardly later. For now he had only the people of Camelot in his focus. His families faces were always at the surface of his thoughts, and Alex knew he was most likely pale with worry.
When the Prince thanked him by name, Alex was taken aback. He did nothing but stare in the brief moment after the words were spoken, and immediatly after he realized he was stareing he felt himself redden slightly. Alex knew he was acting silly, but to have the next king of Camelot wanting to shake his hand was not something Alex had ever seen happening. He raised his own hand to take the Prince's, and suddenly realized why so many people would fight for the man in front of him. Perhaps Alex was being over-dramatic, as was his way, but he knew that if ever there was a king he would die for, it was the one in front of him.
"Your welcome Sire." Alex replied after the Prince gave another thank you. Alex had always had a way with words, but they abandoned him at the current time and he settled for a simple thing to say. He blinked twice so that he would not seem as if he was still stareing, but it most likely did not help as he still felt as if the shock and slight awe on his face must be visible for miles.
Alex felt himself settle slightly as he let the shock roll off him. It was slightly odd how in a few moments conversation, Alex could be thrown for such a loop. He found that if he just accepted it for the strange occurence it was then it had a bit less of an effect on him. Now Alex was simply embarrassed for being so awkward through out the whole last exange. He had just never imagined ever being thanked personally by someone of such a high rank, and as almost an equal. Forget trying to tell his family about this, they probably wouldn't even believe him.

Alex found himself pleasently surprised when Gwen finished wrapping his wound. It did not hurt as he had thought it would. He let himself smile gratefully at Gwen before picking up his shirt. Alex fingered the rip down the side and merely folded the shirt and set it on his lap. It was a bit to damaged to wear, and had a bit of blood on it. Alex could only imagine walking home to his family wearing it. His mother would either fret at him or attempt to kill him for ruining the shirt. In honesty Alex was not sure which reaction would make him more uncomfortable.
"I knocked it over, but it had started to get up. Thought we were pretty doomed untill it just collapsed back in on itself. Like a puppet whose strings were cut." Alex said to the Prince. He gave a small chuckle and subconciously realised he was most likely still in slight shock from the events. He also realised that he had forgotten to add Sire to his sentence, but was to tired to correct his mistake. He figured it might not be so noticable when Gwen was currently about to wrap Arthur's hand. He doubted any small misstep he made would register with the Prince at the moment.
Stretching slightly, he found the bandage firmly in place and not as restrictive as he assumed it would be. He could not raise the arm on his injured side all the way up due to the wrapping, but it wouldn't hinder him in most things. Alex figured it was a small price to pay for fighting the seemingly living dead. In fact, he was still surprised he still had all his extremities. Just another thing to be thankful for, he guessed.

Alex simply laughed at Brynn's joke about being back by midnight. Although, he was pretty sure he could say the same thing quite seriously about himself. If he was not back in time for the evening shift at his step-father's bakery, he was sure his mother might actually find a way to bake him into one of the pies. Alex found himself hoping it would be an apple pie, for at least he would be stuck inside his favorite.
When the girl's spoke of who they wanted to root for Alex smiled along with the question. He knew he would most likely do what he always did and not root for anyone in particular. He figured the winner was almost guarenteed and that he didn't have any personal-ties to any of the competitors anyway.
His thoughts on the subject were interupted as Brynn leaned towards Gwen and he felt her brush against him softly. Alex was sure that the world could have felt his heart stop just as he did. However the moment seemed to end too quickly and he was left sturggling to catch up with what was said. The words Brynn had spoken took a few extra seconds to sink in, and when they did the feeling of breathlessness was replaced by a slight burning that was uncomfortably like jealousy.
Who knew that all along he should not have been worrying about other servants, but knights! Alex did not know this Sir Kolby, but he suddenly felt a rush of dislike for the man. At first he contemplated confronting the other man, but then threw that idea away upon realizing he would end up most likely in small pieces that would make his mother's task of putting him into a pie much simpler. Instead he settled on inwardly rooting against the knight during the fights. "Well I guess good luck to him then." Alex said with a bright fake smile sitting on his face. If thoughts could actually harm people, it would not be surprising if the knight in question was unable to compete at all in that moment.
