"I should like to visit her before she goes if she is feeling up to it,"
Merlin looked up at her from where he was sitting down. He gave her a small smile. “She’d like that – thank you Morgana”. Everyone had been so kind and helpful when his mother had turned up. Gwen had nursed her, Gauis had practically gone and nearly gave his own life in exchange for hers, and now Morgana wanted to visit her. “Everyone’s been really kind” he started, “I really appreciate it”.
As he expected, Morgana didn’t take the offer of a chair. She didn’t seem the type to sit down and have a heart to heart. Yet she was now telling him of her dreams, or rather – visions. Merlin felt sorry for her. He knew exactly what it felt like – to be scared of who you were and what possible consequences there could be. He’d only starting accepting his powers for their advantageous uses when he first arrived in Camelot. Gauis had been a big impact as to how he used and looked at magic. The magic book was his lifeline. It was making him stronger and aware of just how much of its contents he could put to use.
Merlin looked at her sadly, “It must be hard, having dreams that scare you”. He wanted so much to put her mind at ease, but he knew what could happen if he said too much. Gauis had warned him about the potential dangers. “But they are just dreams Morgana – scary or not, they won’t harm you”.
What else could he say? He couldn’t exactly give her a massive hug – for one she’d completely freak out just as much as if he told her that she was a seer.

He noticed her blushing. It was quite sweet actually. Either she was highly embarrassed or the sight of him covered in fruit and vegetables was incredibly irresistible. Thankfully it wasn’t either of these, and it was just the fact that she apparently couldn’t cook. “Im sure your cooking isn’t that bad – well…anything is better compared to the stuff that Gauis has been giving me” he smirked. On his first night there, Gauis had produced some kind of congealed browny green stuff that was meant to be soup. Well…if that was soup then Merlin wondered what on earth people in Camelot lived on. Surprisingly Aliyaha shook his hand when he produced it. “Sorry…im kind of covered” he told her, wiping it as clean as it could become on his shirt.
“Surely you couldn’t have done something bad to earn that name,”
Merlin smirked knowingly, “I met Prince Arthur”
She must not really know her way around as well as he thought. She didn’t know where the physician’s quarters were, but then again – he supposed that was normal. She was a serving girl so she didn’t really have any reason to access there. He raised his brows at the fact that she’d been in the prat’s chambers. “And what did you find? Voodoo dolls? Torture instruments?” For Merlin to say that he hated Prince Arthur was an understatement. Oh well, at least Gwen had thought he was the hero.
He smiled weakly at the mention of her parents being dead. “Im sorry…”. To lose both of them at just twelve was hard enough than losing one. Merlin knew all too well what it was like to only have one parent. He’d never known his father. His mother never spoke of him. So Merlin chose not to ask too many questions. He was happy enough with it just being him and his mother – and she’d brought him up well. He hadn’t wanted to leave Ealdor and her on her own, but the time came when he hadn’t really had a choice. Besides – Hunith was only doing what was best for him.
“Where do you work in the castle?”
“Oh…err I don’t really have a job.” He shrugged, “I just run errands for Gauis and help him out”.

“Do you know why you are here Merlin? And do you know who I am?”
Merlin’s gaze fell on Nimueh once again. She appeared to have her guard up if Merlin could sense her own lack of judgement any better. He slowly shook his head, giving a small laugh of disbelief. “What do you take me for Nimueh? Im not the idiot who you chocked to death”. Yes, he remembered that part, where he’d been a disgustingly innocent and righteous servant who had ventured with only one desire. To kill her. Of course he knew why he was here now.
He slowly made his way towards her, “You’re not doubting yourself now are you?” he asked calmly and looked at her a little worried. “After all, you are the one who called for the otherworld to bring me back.” he stated.
He picked up the cup of life that was resting on top of the crypt and examined it, eyes flickering to Nimueh and back down at the cup itself. He held it up to examine it a little more. It was a curious and powerful object to say the least. “Strange, isn’t it? How one moment I couldn’t hate you anymore for killing a friend, and yet now I find myself thanking you for it”. Merlin looked back over his shoulder to where the body of the man was still laying. “I remember him – vaguely…” he began, but found himself saying nothing more.
Merlin held out the cup for Nimueh to take, “You might be wanting to save this for another occasion – just incase”.

Swirls of colour flickered around the darkness. A high pitched scream replaced silence. Hushed and evil like whispers spoke to him in the darkness. His time was now, and he would rise again. That was what they told him. With his strength combined and magic far more powerful to him than before, he would be the creator of a new world, a new Albion. A new era. He would have a purpose. No destinies. No lives to protect. This was it. This was for his purpose – a call of destiny that only belonged to him. The swirls around him began to take hold, as though they were lifting him up, engulfing him in all their glory. With a final flash of light, everything went dark once more.
Merlin’s eyes snapped open. The first thing he saw was just how magnificent the darkest of clouds could look on a wonderful dismal day. It set the mood just perfectly. He slowly got to his feet, his eyes finally coming to rest on the woman who stood before him. His expression was one that could be mistaken for a glare. The evilest of glares for that matter – and it was.
Without any word to her he looked to the sky, his eyes flashing red. A clap of thunder and a flash of lightening tore through the clouds - as a result, the rain began to pour down on the pair of them. Satisfied with his work (although not showing it) he looked back to Nimueh. It was then his gaze fell upon the old man lying by the stone crypt. He slowly made his way over and crouched down beside the body, pulling the arm so he could see exactly who it was.
He remembered this man. He remembered his face. The name escaped him though. He must have done something wrong in order for him to die at the hands on Nimueh. Merlin gave a small smirk at this. How very wrong he had been to become involved with her. He pushed the body back and rose to his feet again, not giving the lifeless form a second look.

The invisible powerful grip was now pushing into his throat was making him even weaker than he felt already. No matter how much he didn’t want to admit – Merlin knew that he wouldn’t get out of this one. The blow that the fireball had caused had already caused some internal damage so it seemed. It was hopeless, he wasnt strong enough. He tried to speak but couldn’t as the grip on his throat tightened, Nimueh’s words still echoing all around him.
“No!” he managed to rasp out and tried to get to his feet, something was keeping him down though. He clutched his throat to try and pull the sensation away, but no matter how hard he tried, he could now see his surroundings swirling around him.
He had to stay awake, he had to try and be strong. For Arthur and for Camelot. The dragon failed to mention what would happen should he or Arthur die with their destiny uncompleted.
Merlin slowly felt everything leaving him. The image of Nimueh above him becoming more and more blurred. “No…” he breathed as his hands began to slip away from the clutch he had on his throat.
With his body feeling heavier than before all Merlin felt like he wanted to do now was close his eyes and sleep. It seemed his eyelids were winning the battle of trying to make him shut them. His body now felt heavy. Merlin’s eyes flickered from Nimueh and focused on the sky instead.
Look at the sky….Look at the sky….Look at the sky. He needed to stay focused on that one thing. Not on the witch. Never the witch.
But soon enough, even the clearest blue was replaced with the darkest of nights.

Freshen up? No there was no time. Merlin had to make sure that Arthur didn’t get into any trouble out there. The idea of going hunting while Morgana’s minions were looking for them was madness in itself.
“I’ll hunt, you stay here – you’re tired” Merlin told him, noting the wry expression on Arthur’s face. He didn’t care if he was going against orders. He had to let Arthur rest and take his mind off of everything he’d just witnessed. It wasn’t going to be easy.
Merlin put down the bag he’d brought with the things he needed in them. The vial that the fisher king had given him being one. Now was the time that he would need to use it. He just had to make sure that no one was around to see it, or to see him try and make sense of how to use it’s power. He sat down and looked at Arthur. “I know it’s not much, but…im sorry Arthur – really….I am”
Merlin had no idea why he was apologising. It most certainly wasn’t on Morgana’s behalf. It was more the fact that they’d had to leave people behind. He had no idea what Morgana would do to them, but she wouldn’t go lightly on them that was certain. They needed to take back the castle for their own, and fast.

Merlin was a little surprised when she asked how his mother was recovering. He opened his mouth to speak, but nothing came out for a while. “She’s well…thank you” he finally managed to find the right words, “getting better everyday so it seems”
“I'm sorry I didn't get the chance to come and see her,"
“You had Arthur to worry about” Merlin shook it off, “my mother just had something that apparently can suddenly just appear. Gauis says that no one knows why, but we went out looking for herbs that he needed to make the remedy. Thankfully we came back just in time” he lied. He wasn’t about to tell her that he was off frying Nimueh with a lightening bolt on the isle of the blessed. “All she needs now is rest and then she can go back home again”.
Morgana appeared to seem even more awkward around him. “Morgana…” he began, “Why have you really come to see me? Because im pretty sure it isn’t to check on my mother”. He was almost certain it wasn’t about that, but the thought was nice enough, “this is about the questing beast isn’t it?” he didn’t need to ask to know – after all he’d been the one to take her back inside when she ran out to Arthur.
Merlin pulled up two chairs and sat on one, gesturing for Morgana to sit on the other. “Now… are you going to tell me what’s really wrong?”

“You think I would join forces with selffish and cruel magic? Never”
There was no way he’d join her. she could ask him a thousand, even a million times and each time the answer would be ‘no’. He had a destiny to lead – Arthur to protect. He would make Arthur king! Not her. All that Nimueh would do was use her magic to turn everyone against eachother. Nimueh wouldn’t even see the light of day once he had his way. She’d killed Gauis. That wasn’t what Merlin had agreed with her on, she was meant to have taken his life in exchange for his mother’s! Now Gauis had paid the price. And for what? This was a vicuous circle that always ended up backfiring on Merlin. He wasn’t leaving this island until Gauis was brought back to him. safe and well.
He watched her – she was conjuring up yet another fireball to throw at him. he’d managed to dodge one, but didn’t know how long it would be until he was struck down. Merlin knew he had to be strong. Just seeing Gauis’ lifeless body on the floor made the anger build up inside of him.
That was when it hit him. the fireball that she’d sent cascading through the air and into his chest! He was knocked to the ground like a lifeless weight. His chest felt like it was on fire, the burning sensation seering through him. he struggled for breath as the burning grew more promentant.
“Pity” he heard her words echo
Merlin looked up and saw her face that was slowly becoming fuzzy. No – he wasn’t about to die on Arthur. He wouldn’t – he couldn’t! he was going to make him king, carry on his destiny for goodness sake!
“Together we could have ruled the world”
Merlin wasn’t going to go down without a fight. He made sure that she wouldn’t have the last say on this matter. He managed to conjur up some words, making sure that they would be the last she heard. They came tumbling from his mouth like a panting venoumous rasp.
“The day I join you…will be the day I die”

Despite Gauis’ warnings, Merlin wasn’t going to give up on the girl. She wasn’t there to be sold – nor was it right to keep her caged up like an animal when she’d done nothing wrong. Creeping past Gauis, who was quietly snoring away in bed, Merlin headed back out into the city – avoiding the guards who were on the night duty, and hiding in the shadows. He’d become so good at creeping around the city at night; it was easy to do now.
He peeked round the corner of a house and saw the cage still unattended outside The Rising Sun. Quietly he made his way over to the cage, looking around to see if anyone (mostly the bounty hunter) was watching or had noticed him. Thankfully all was quiet. He looked through the bars and saw the girl looking back at him.
“Tospringe” he held his hand over the cage’s lock and murmered. Immediately the lock burst open allowing Merlin to climb into the cage.
He grabbed her wrists, exposing the cuffs that were keeping her chained into the cage. “It’s alright, I’ll get you out of here” he smiled and looked down at the cuffs. “Unspanne thas maegth!”he hissed and immediately the cuffs broke off of the girls wrists.
Merlin jumped out of the cage. “Come on” he looked back and urged her to follow.

Oh Merlin, I don't know. Here?! He's a prince! This is not even close to the living he is used to. He might not be the bully he was a year ago, but . . . . I . . . . I don't think this would be a good idea. . . . "
Merlin knew that would be the answer – no matter how much he could beg, Gwen wasn’t going to back down on this one. He scratched the back of his neck and gave a small fake sigh. “Oh well, I tried” he began and headed for the door, “ I guess I’ll just have to tell Arthur that it was a stupid idea that he should enter a tournament to earn some respect for who he actually is, and not just because he’s the prince but oh well” he shrugged and opened the door. “He was looking forward to coming here as well” he bit his lip knowingly. That was a lie. Arthur would have to like staying at Gwen’s or lump it. “Being amongst the people and proving to himself that he could do this…guess a man just has to keep his dreams and reality separate” he shrugged it off.
Yes he was going to play the guilt card. Gwen was his last and only resort. She had seemed hesitant in saying no, so Merlin knew he’d have to twist and turn until she gave in.
“Thanks anyway Gwen” he smiled disappointingly and walked out of the door, closing it behind him. Oh yes. He was such a good actor he’d even convinced himself that he was gutted she’d refused.
Now to give her time
As began to walk to the castle he smiled cheekily to himself. He knew what she would do next.
“Five…four…three…two…one…” he counted down to himself

Merlin said nothing. Could he tell Lancelot that Arthur was in love with Gwen but wouldn’t admit it? The Prince seemed to not know his own feelings himself let alone do something about them.
“What about you?” Merlin asked, avoiding the question, “Do you have feelings for Gwen?”
Gwen seemed to be the attraction of many men at the moment. Merlin had seen her face when Arthur said Morgana had begged him to look for her. She looked crushed, angry, in disbelief. Merlin knew that Gwen wasn’t stupid, and that she was most defiantly torn at this point. Her expression when she looked at Lancelot during their escape seemed to be a genuine one. He’d seen it, so had Arthur – that was most likely why Arthur had fibbed. He just didn’t know what he wanted.
One question remained though; did Gwen have the same feelings for Arthur as he for her? Earlier everything seemed to have been spoken for, but Merlin wasn’t entirely convinced. He was more confused than anything. He leant against the tree trunk and waited for Lancelot to reply. If Lancelot did admit his feelings then what? Would he return to Camelot? Or would he leave? It all rested on two possible answers. Yes or No.

"Well that's Arthur. Always wanting to be the center of attention and taking up everybody's time,"
“You have no idea” Merlin chuckled and shook his head. He continued to work around Morgana. She had come here for something so it was best not to appear on high alert all the time, “he certainly makes sure that I take up most of his”.
"I wanted to say thank you to you and Gaius," he looked up from mopping the floor and frowned, "For saving Arthur's life,"
Oh. So that was what this was about. Merlin propped the mop up against the bench. “I didn’t do anything, Gauis is the one who tried all the remedies. I just…well, I just watched” he shrugged. Yes. He’d watched. He’d fought. He’d won. Technically it was Nimueh’s life that had compensated for Arthur’s. At least he wouldn’t have to worry about her trying to kill Arthur or anyone else anymore.
Morgana looked embarrassed. This made Merlin feel even more concerned, “Are you…are you sure you’re ok?” he asked. "I don't have to explain how worried about him I was," she replied.
Merlin knew all too well about how worried she had been. She’d frantically run out into the sqaure as they were about to ride out to kill the questing beast. She fought against Arthur not to go. Merlin had literally had to drag her from Arthur and back inside the castle. He knew that she’d seen the vision of him being attacked by the beast in her dreams. “He is alive…” he began, paused for a moment and then finished his sentence off, “that’s all that matters – it could have been far worse had Gauis not found the right cure”.

Merlin smiled lightly as the young girl blabbed on about how she wasn’t very good at cooking. She took the basket from him. “You’re probably a better cook than I am” he grinned. Aliyaha? A very unusual name. He held out his hand for her to shake, “and im covered in rotten fruit and vegetables” he quickly put his hand back down, “Im Merlin, sometimes I go by the name of ‘idiot’ too”. Ali looked a little shy, especially as now he could see her cheeks burning. “sorry” he apologised, “I don’t mean to embarrass you”.
“I just came to the castle and still learning my way around,”
Merlin smiled, “I arrived here a couple of days ago. Already ive managed to get myself thrown in the stocks” he told her, although from his attire she could most likely see that. “I live with Gauis, up in the physicians quarters?” he wondered whether she knew where it was.
He saw her looking up at the sky and then frowned again, “are you alright? You look a bit…dazed?” was that the right word? “I could carry that back for you if you like? Make up for walking straight into you” he offered and looked at the basket that she was holding.

"The prince might be able to replace an employee but I could never replace a friend! Gaius could never replace your role in his life!"
Merlin sat down and fiddled with one of the vials that Gauis had left on his bench. “You’re sweet Gwen…really – thank you for your concern” he started, “but I still go by what I said, even if I died tomorrow then I’ll admit it would be a blessing”. He had a lot on his shoulders; Gauis knew that even if Gwen didn’t. Merlin felt for once that he was weak – he didn’t know whether it was still the last of the poison working it’s way out of his system or if he was just feeling like giving up on the whole ‘Save Arthur’ scenario. "You might feel replaceable, Merlin; but please know you are far from it."
Merlin bit his lip and got up, “I’d better get to work, there’s a lot to be done, and this place doesn’t clean itself” he now knew the definition of hard work, even if it hit him in the face. There was a lot to be done; he needed to regain his strength. What use was a destiny with a weak protector?
He looked a little surprised when Gwen told him that Morgana had let her come to him. He gave a small snort, “I pretty much doubt that Morgana would appreciate cleaning Gauis’ leech tank for me” she seemed to prim to get her hands dirty. “And no…Gwen…I need to do this – it’s not as easy as you think it is”. He had no idea why he was becoming so defensive; usually he would have appreciated help. “But I know you’re not going to let this lie – so…you’re more than free to help me, if you want. But really I don’t need to rest”.
Merlin was a little surprised to have confirmation that Arthur had gone against Uther’s orders to help him. Yes, he’d helped Arthur out of that cave. He’d sent that light to keep him from falling to his death, but he didn’t think it was real. He thought he had been dreaming. “Arthur?” he frowned, “Prince Arthur?” He knew he’d heard right, “the prat that calls me an idiot and uses me as an attack dummy in training?” he paused and gave her a crazy look, "we are talking about the same Arthur here aren't we?"

Before he knew it, there was a shoe flying towards him. Merlin ducked as it soared over his head and hit the door with a ‘thud’. He turned back to gave a wiggled his brows. He wasn’t going to throw a shoe at the prince. Instead he looked around, finding some dirty laundry and launching it in Arthur’s direction.
Merlin said nothing about the whole Vivian situation. It was best to just give Arthur the silent treatment and annoy him. “Mhmmm” he said eventually.
Then came Gwen. Merlin listened as Arthur said that the subject of his marriage to Elena had been mentioned. Well, at least he wasn’t keeping her in the dark about it. "But it's not that easy to just marry Guinevère. And I fear, this union with Elena will . . . hurt her."
Merlin looked up, his brows knitted together. He could see the pain in Arthur’s face – hear it in his voice. He leant across the table, even though the prince was still sat on the bed, Merlin wanted him to know that he had his trust. “You need to stop this marriage from going ahead.” He began. That would be the hard part, “you and Gwen…you share feelings for one another that you and Elena could never have – if you really love Gwen then we really need to stop this marriage before all three of you end up with a life of misery” he finished. “One day…Gwen will be your Queen, you and I both know what you’re capable of once you become king. Make that one of your priorities, make her realise that with both your situations, you’re more than prepared to wait until the time is right, and until you have the power to make both of you happy, without hurting others”.
Strong words? Merlin didn’t think so, but Arthur needed all the advice he could get right now. Even thought Merlin knew bugger all about Marriage and happiness, he knew more about the feelings of others and how they could potentially be put right.

Merlin gave an inward groan at the fact that he still had to be Arthur’s attack dummy. It would be just like the fight in the marketplace again, only this time with weapons on both sides. "And if I kill you in the process, then oh well,"
“Please…do – im sure it would have it advantages for both of us” Merlin muttered in reply to this. Right now he would rather be six feet under than have to scrub the Prince’s socks everyday.
He couldn’t help but smirk slightly at the prince’s reaction to his earlier question about Gwen. “Oh right, I just thought being a prat and all, you didn’t care for anyone lower down in rank than you” he mused. This was partially referring to Arthur’s old servant Morris. Oh how he would give anything to give him back his old job. How had he even stuck with it?! Surely the words ‘Arthur’ and ‘fun’ didn’t even exist in the same sentence.
Ah yes, the throne room. He would have to stand there. Well he could do that. easy peasy. Oh well, at least he wouldn’t have to talk to Arthur. Arthur didn’t like Merlin talk and Merlin didn’t like asking all these questions. “Purely because you’re a chore for me yourself” Merlin muttered to himself. He didn’t care if Arthur heard – he was a piece of work, and Merlin knew it would be a while before he managed to master the art of serving him where both parties were happy with the arrangement.

He could hear the warning bell sounding out now, just as he’d finished. Obviously that was going to happen. He and Arthur carried on running anyway. He wondered what the Prince was thinking at this moment. Having been betrayed by the sister who he just found out that he shared blood with was the top one, but he also knew that Arthur would be thinking of ways to try and help Gwen and the knights to escape Morgana’s clutches.
"We're almost there," he heard Arthur call as the bells still rang loud and clear.
“I’VE GOT A STITCH!!” Merlin called, panting slightly as he felt himself began to slow down more. No – keep running, keep alive. Keep Arthur alive. Finally! The cave, as he stopped coming to the entrance, Arthur shoved him inside before following. Merlin turned to him. “Do you think they saw us come this way?” he asked as he regained his breath. Perhaps, Arthur’s back was now against the cave wall – sword at the ready to strike should any guard happen to appear.
“Arthur!” he hissed as the prince gave orders for him to stay there while he slowly headed outside again. Merlin headed to where Arthur had been standing before, his back up against the cave wall, waiting.
He hoped that the sounds he could hear outside were not the ones of guards. If they were then Arthur would be calling for him right now. "The others are here,”
Merlin almost jumped a mile as Arthur appeared again and confirmed that Gwaine, Elyan and Gauis had made it there safely. He gave a small sigh of relief. “Now what?” he asked Arthur who was busy putting his sword back in his sheath.

Something wasn’t right here. If she hadn’t come for her sleeping draft then what did she want? Morgana never usually came to Gauis unless something was wrong or that she’d had another bad dream. Merlin wanted so much to enlighten her about her powers, but he knew he couldn’t. it was far to dangerous, especially for a woman in her position. If Uther ever found out then Merlin had bad thoughts about what he would do.
“D-did you have another dream?” he asked, and then realised that was a total violation of her privacy. “Sorry, Gauis told me about some of the nightmares that you’ve been having lately.” Yes…nightmares…
"I wanted to make sure you and Gaius were alright,"
Oh?
Merlin frowned, “We’re fine”. he began
Did she know something? What if she’d seen them? Did she know about Nimueh and the Isle of the Blessed showdown? Had she somehow seen it in her visions? This wasn’t good.
