His brother’s words didn’t amuse him in the slightest, yet he expected him to not greet him with a hello, but some kind of witty remark. The younger Aubert had a rather different sense of humour to Lucan, so instead he chose to the let the greeting go over his head and turn his attention to a more formal one. “Oh Hello Griff, great to see you too” he smirked, turning around with Heidi still moving slightly to get comfortable. She’d complained about being put down for so long in her crib that Lucan had even considered the fact that she’d inherited Camila’s art of protest on certain matters. She certainly wasn’t taking anything lying down – and quite literally – so Lucan had given up and given into Heidi’s demands. Great, so it began. Soon she would be wrapped around his little finger. Then again, it wasn’t too hard to say no.
"She's beautiful. Obviously got her looks from our side."
Lucan gave a small chuckle, “Well…it isn’t hard to.” Heidi had finally given up complaining and had settled down to sleep again. “Do you want to hold her? She’s been quite a madam this last hour or so.” Plus, Griff was far better at holding a baby than he was. When he’d first held Heidi, he thought that she would break in two. She was incredibly tiny – smaller than he had expected her to be – and so delicate that he found his arms turning to jelly.
“Father’s annoyed, he was rooting on a boy” he smirked, for once his father had been speechless, so Allard had told him. “Apparently Uncle said that he didn’t talk to anyone for hours, so I guess I’ve done something right for myself.” Just not in his father’s eyes, but he didn’t care. Nothing else mattered anymore but the tiny little girl now in his brother’s arms.

They sat and drank quietly, the events seemed to have shaken them both up – whereas before they would been at one another’s throats, making comments which would eventually lead to a war of words. The only war Lucan could consider acceptable in his mind. Yet the imprisonment had changed them both. It had made Lucan all the more stronger and determined, and Cait? Well…it had shut her up somewhat, but she was not speaking out and starting an argument at any given moment.
The fire was eventually lit after she said that she was a little cold, before Luc would’ve told her to stop fussing, but now things were different. He hoped that they could be friends, or at least try to be. “I’m…I’m me…” he said rather pathetically in answer to an earlier question about his wellbeing. “Part of me wishes that I was dead and then I remember who I have here…” Lucan didn’t do heart to hearts usually, but seeing as they had both been in this together he could be sure that Cait would understand.
He sat back in his chair a little more, “I want us to start over again…let us at least try to put our differences aside and be friends?” The ball was in her court now, it was best to let the lady decide these things. If she didn’t want anything more to do with him then so be it, but at least he could say that he tried.

Caitrin knew enough to know not to ask him questions, and with Lucan’s current state he wasn’t in any mood to answer them. He smiled at Heidi as she made herself comfortable again in her Aunt’s arms. Esmae looking at her cousin with awe. Lucan smiled, “She’s resting at the moment, I just checked on her a moment ago, she certainly needs it.” Cam had taken it upon herself to bring up their child Caitrin style; no wet nurse and she had made that clear from the beginning. Lucan had let his wife do what she wanted, knowing full well that she would win any argument. It had certainly allowed her bonding time with Heidi that she would never have had with a wet nurse.
Lucan was glad that Cam was catching up with some sleep; it had given him a chance to be with his daughter and to work out the ups and downs of fatherhood for himself. He must have learnt something new about Heidi every day since she had been born, and he knew there was a lot more to come. “Here…” he smiled and took Heidi from Caitrin, “Let’s not have your arms drop off” and with that he settled the tiny girl back into her crib, gently pulling the blanket back over her as he had done earlier. He spent a few moments looking at her to check she was ok, before turning his attentions back to his sister in law.
“So…when is my brother going to show his face then? It feels like months since I’ve seen him at all.”

Allard turned to Caitrin as his nephew abruptly left the room. He gave a small sigh and as Caitrin asked if Lucan was ok, Allard smiled pitifully and nodded. “I think he would’ve liked a mother around, someone to tell him everything is going to be ok, you know Lucan, he’s a worrier and there is only so much that I can say before it all falls of deaf ears.” He explained, “He usually gets like this if Amice is mentioned, hence why we rarely speak of her unless Lucan chooses to freely – and that is rare…” Allard paused, “Amice would have loved Heidi though, she was always so set upon marriage and children, she loved children and when Lucan came along she just adored him.” Allard explained, obviously Amice had not been mentioned by Lucan to her. “Anyway…Lucan is every inch his mother, so there is no doubt that Little Lady Aubert here will have those qualities too.”
Lucan returned after ten minutes or so. He’d needed a stiff drink to actually get his head together. He couldn’t let Caitrin see him like this, nor Esmae. He didn’t want them to see that side of him ever. That was for him and him alone. “You ok my lad?” Allard had slapped a supportive hand on his back when he walked back in. “When am I not?” Lucan flashed a false smile.
“If you’ll excuse me, I should really ask Thomas to prepare my things, I travel back to Glouchedon tomorrow, so I would like to actually have a smooth journey.” Allard said, bowed his head towards Cait and patted Luc’s back lightly. “I’ll let you know, I was told it would not be long now, best prepare my lad….” He whispered into Lucan’s ear and left Caitrin and Lucan alone again.
The Knight turned back to his sister in law. “I hope Heidi wasn’t fussing too much while I was gone…” he broke the silence that he could sense.

Lucan could already see so much of Camila in his daughter; it was like a smaller version. His Uncle had also made an appearance back in Camelot to visit the new arrival. “Your father will be fine without me for a day or so, the estate won’t fall to pieces I can assure you, just as I did him.” Allard had spoken that morning. Lucan certainly owed his uncle far too much. “Ah but Esmae was more well behaved” he smirked at Caitrin’s comment. Not that Heidi wasn’t but getting into some sort of routine would take a while for them all to adjust.
Allard seemed to have overheard the comment about Rouland as he passed the room and had now stopped in to say hello to Cait and Esmae. “The curious case of Rouland de Archer and the missing bottle of wine, I’ll be sure to tip him off should he question its wareabouts” He smiled at Cait and then gave Lucan a wink, “Hopefully he won’t kill my nephew before he becomes Duke? I would quite like to return home knowing that my hard work had paid off, not to arrange a funeral.” At this Lucan groaned and ran a hand down his face. “Rest assured Uncle, I’ve been told I’m able to get myself out of the trickiest of situations – Rouland should be an easy one.” He gave Cait a grin.
Both Allard and Lucan listened to Cait explaining how everybody was. “Seems like he’s keeping Griff on his toes then” Luc chuckled on learning that Rouland had kept him from seeing Heidi. “I’m glad to hear that Griff’s enjoying it just as much as Rouland.” Allard gave a small snort at this.
Heidi seemed content for a while until she began to stir in Caitrin’s arms. “She’s a gem isn’t she?” Allard grinned at the baby, who was now making a fuss, “Amice would have adored her, completely adored her – she always had her way with children.” He now appeared in a daze, remembering his late sister. Lucan could sense this, he missed his mother, especially now – he had wondered what she would have been like with Heidi.
“If you’ll excuse me for a few moments, Cait – are you ok with Heidi for a minute or so? I won’t be too long, I just need…I left my drink in the solar.” Lucan excused himself, needing to have just a few moments to compose himself.

Within the couple of minutes that had gone past, Lucan had somehow forgotten that Cait was making her way to meet them. So caught up in his daughter, he almost jumped at the sound of his sister in law’s words of just how beautiful Heidi was. He turned around and smiled at her, walking over with Heidi so that Caitrin and a newly appeared Esmae could take a look at the baby.
“She is, isn’t she?” he grinned, not taking his eyes from Heidi, “She’s just….perfect.” He crouched down to Esmae’s level so as she could get a good look at Heidi. “Here you go Ezzy, This is Heidi” he introduced his niece to her new cousin. Esmae looked at the baby curiously and then to Lucan, who winked and slowly rose up to standing level again.
“Thanks for coming” he smiled at Cait; “Now…I can see you’re dying to hold her” he grinned and passed Heidi to her.
“We have this for her, well; one bit is for you and Cam.”
"I think you've got Cam's measurements wrong" He smirked as he looked at the little dress that she'd brought. "However im sure that Heidi would certainly sleep well with a little wine..." he gave Cait a kiss on her cheek, "Thankyou."
Lucan had chuckled to himself on spying the bottle, only Cait would be brave enough to steal some of a Rouland’s supply. “Come here Esmae” he held out his arms to the little girl who ran into them. He lifted her up into a cuddle. “Have you been helping your mother look after Alfie?” Esmae gave a small nod. “Now that’s what I like to hear.” He gave her a kiss and put her down again.
“How is everyone anyway?” he turned back to Caitrin, “I feel like the last week or so has gone past in a bubble”.

Little Heidi Aubert was certainly Lucan’s new found love. Perfect eyes, just like her mother’s – tiny little fingernails and a small pout upon her lips as she slept soundly. Lucan found that he just could not stop staring at her. No clues as to just how loved she was by both mother and father, nor of the world that slowly passed around her. A vulnerable child; and she was theirs. Their own daughter. Lucan certainly couldn’t have felt any more love than he did now.
Occasionally she’d make the odd movement, a small gurgle and yet did not wake. Precious moments like this were ones that would be with him forever. Watching over her, he couldn’t take the smile off his face. He wondered whether every father felt like this – a constant longing of wanting to spend every waking moment by their baby’s side.
Lucan pulled the blanket back over the small sleeping form; obviously it had slipped down earlier from where she may have kicked it or moved. A gentle tap at the door signalled that Thomas was behind him. Lucan turned to the servant who now occupied the doorway. “I’m sorry to disturb you – but Lady Caitrin had arrived…” he said, looking over at the crib apologetically as Heidi began to cry. Luc picked her up and hushed her, “It’s alright Thomas – send her in.”
With that, the servant left, leaving Lucan to calm Heidi down, clearly annoyed by the interruption to her sleep. How could she have heard that anyway? It astounded Lucan just as to how much she could sleep through and how much she couldn’t. He kissed her head gently. “Now Heidi, you’ve got to be on your best behaviour for Aunt Caitrin – I doubt she’ll be impressed”.
Eventually Heidi stopped and snuggled herself down again. “That’s better” he whispered to her, kissing her again. He would certainly be able to get used to moments like this.

Lucan gave a small chuckle, it really wouldn’t surprise him in mini versions of Gwaine began to turn up over the years, after all – his friend certainly loved him women and his ale, but perhaps not in that order. “I’ll be sure to keep my eyes peeled, that way I can be sure to steer clear” he smirked. At the mention of Cait, Luc nodded – not wanting to go into too many details. Cait had confided in him some days ago, confirming Lucan’s suspicions of just what had gone on. He of course was still reeling with anger that such a man like Pip could get away with the ultimate betrayal to a woman. Especially one as a strong as Cait, and now she appeared just as weak and vulnerable than he had ever seen her. Lucan wished he could do something to make her feel better – running Pip though was all too easy and as much satisfaction as he may get from replaying the scene over and over in his head, Lucan couldn’t deny that it wouldn’t be enough, and would never be enough to compensate.
“She is” he finally spoke, “So yet another Aubert in Camelot” The child was still an Aubert no matter what blood.
Lucan gave a small chuckle, it wouldn’t surprise him if Camila began to complain about just how fat she was getting. “With her emotional state, I think if any one dared put such a comment to her, she’d rip them apart.” Talking to Gwaine about this kind of thing was easy; he began to wonder why he hadn’t done it sooner.
It was then he realised, along with Gwaine’s blank expression that his friend knew nothing of the future plans that lay ahead for his family. Lucan felt as though he was betraying himself as well as all his friends. Leaving them for something that he knew he had to do, but somehow it felt so wrong at the same time.
“Things are…well they’re all up in the air at the moment.” He managed to say, “My father isn’t well at all, he hasn’t been for some time – and if he dies…well…that means I’d have to leave Camelot and go…home…” Home. Calling Glouchedon ‘home’ seemed blank, almost vacant. For the majority of his life he’d always called ‘home’ Camelot. To now refer to his former home as that didn’t quite measure up.
Luc ran a hand through his hair, “You know, I always thought I would have it easy, come to Camelot, make a life for myself and never have to go back to my father again – I thought that he would just forget about me, turn his attentions to Griff and that would be it. I guess sometimes you can have too much of a good thing.”

It was going to be a long process. The mass clean-up of Camelot, the bloodshed of the innocent that would stain the minds and lives of everyone. All at the hand of a woman who Lucan would have bowed down to with no hatred, once upon a time. Morgana had changed, now after a short but brutal reign; he was helping to look for her after she had vanished into thin air once again. They’d split up, some in groups or in pairs. Lucan had taken to going it alone. He had searched various parts of the castle and now only had the vaults below to look. Should she be down there, he wanted to make sure that no one else would die at her hand. If he did, then it didn’t matter so much. That was his duty, not the innocent people of Camelot.
Lucan passed the great hall, where still the rubble was being cleared. The spot on which Morgana had apparently been knelt had shown no trace of her. This had sparked the wide search of both the castle and city. So far, there was nothing. “It’s gonna take a while to clean up this mess.” Sir Yvain sighed, stopping his own search along with a couple of other men. “We’ll find her, even if it takes us years….we’ll find her.” Lucan told him as he watched. He wasn’t the only one who was determined to find Morgana; everyone else was thinking the same.
Turning away from the hall, Lucan continued up the corridor to head outside.

He had no idea what to expect from a pregnant woman. He’d never even been in the same room as one before, well….Cait was an exception, but to deal with their problems – that would be fun…not. He knew that one moment Cam would look at him as though he was breakfast, and the next she would be crying and telling him that this was not a good idea. He knew that much about the mood swings that were to be expected, but nothing else.
Rest was an understatement. He gladly welcomed it when he had the chance, but there would be no rest when he eventually took over from his father. “I’ll be fine” Luc smiled a little sleepily, “Besides, I want to stay awake and actually spend some time with my wife…I feel guilty for leaving you after your birthday.”
He’d cursed to himself when he’d heard that they would be riding out a day after Cam’s birthday. He hadn’t told her until that evening and there had been some words exchanged – she was only looking out for him, but he had warned her before they had married, that life would be like this. Luc had given her enough chances to back out, but she’d stuck by him, and he couldn’t have loved her any more than he already did.
She’d been taking sleeping drafts? Lucan studied the bottle carefully. “These are safe aren’t they?” he asked, a little unsure. He’d never had cause to take a sleeping tonic in his life. “It won’t harm the baby?” Thank goodness she was going to stop taking them; he didn’t want to take any chances.

Lucan snorted at Gwaine’s comment, “With the amount of women you’ve charmed, im surprised you don’t have a few of your own.” A small smirk had now crossed his expression, “and you can’t blame me for having a beast of a brother.”
He threw himself down on the grass and sat there, taking a well-deserved swing of water from his pouch. “I haven’t really told anyone about it, so I wouldn’t be offended” he laughed, “You know how much stick I would get from everyone.” And that much was true. He was sure that his brothers in arms would make his life hell with constant jokes and whatnot. That was the spirit of them all; they knew how to laugh even in the direst of times.
“I guess I’m just a little worried that’s all, there’s so much change that will be happening in the next few months that it’s a wonder how I’ll cope as well as Camila.” Leaving Camelot would be a big change for them both, and with Cam’s current state he didn’t want to risk her health, no matter how much Glouchedon needed him.

CRUNCH!
Ouch… now he really should be concentrating, now daydreaming his life away. Should he be on the battlefield he wouldn’t be spending his time thinking of sunshine and daisies. Now Gwaine had the upper hand and Lucan was in pain because of it. He threw his own helmet to the ground and ran a hand through his hair, Gwaine now asking about whether his old age was getting to him. Pah! He wasn’t that old, well…he was in comparison to Gwaine, Percival and others, but now entirely over the hill.
“Sorry” he threw his sword to one side “I didn’t see…” Not seeing would result in death had the matter been more serious, not seeing was being careless, and being careless was not his duty. “I’m not that old…” he finally realised the slight jibe aimed at him earlier. Many others would think he was considering Camila’s age. “Besides I can take you down quicker any other time….”
Gwaine was close to his family, since he’d been knighted Lucan had found that he gelled more to Gwaine, not that the others were not his friends or brothers, Gwaine just had a mannerism to him that Lucan could trust a little more. “Camila’s with child…” he announced as the pair went to take a breather for five minutes. “I guess my mind is a little elsewhere right now…”

So his suspicions had been proved. Lucan was angry, how on earth could this have happened? His fists tightened as Caitrin continued explaining her ordeal, and by the time she had finished, he was pretty sure that he would rip the arm off of the chair at any moment. “If I ever find him, I’ll kill him…” his words came out through gritted teeth. How could any man barge into a home and put a woman through all of that? “I swear I’ll kill him…” and he would. Lucan calmed himself down finally and passed Cait something to dry her eyes. “I knew you wouldn’t have done that to Griff, I know you all too well.”
Dying. Yes his father truly was, and it was only so long before he would have to take his place, something that he wasn’t exactly looking forward to. “Yes…” he answered her flatly, he knew there should be more emotion but he couldn’t muster any right now. However fantastic or not, the sheer reality was that it would be a complete nightmare. “My father has prepared me for this day since I was born - I feel I should know what to expect, I do know, but at the same time I can’t help but feel that it’s all going to be a shambles.” He told her, “Being a Knight is all I feel I really know, I’ve been in Camelot for so many years that I’ve almost forgotten what Glouchedon looks like.” He paused, “I’m debating whether to tell Griff, he probably wouldn’t care – he and father have never been close, but he needs to know either way…”
He smiled as he watched Arthur fussing around his mother. Lucan hoped to see his son doing the same to Camila one day. For now, all they could do was wait to see what the future would hold.

She had no one to turn to, no one at all – and Luc couldn’t imagine how Cait was feeling right now, but it was a cry for help. No one else would know, she hadn’t confided in his brother nor Camila or anyone. He wondered why on earth she’d choose to pour her heart out to him? Then he remembered. They were family. “Alright…” he finally said softly, “I’m listening, you can tell me anything…”
On the subject of leaving Camelot he smiled to himself weakly. “My father is dying….” He began; he may as well just come out with it now. He hadn’t told Griff, and he hadn’t even told Camila – she would only worry for him and that was the last thing he needed. “Soon I’ll have to give up my knighthood and go back to Glouchedon with Camila. I’d have to leave everyone I know and care for here…It just…it just doesn’t feel right.” Lucan paused, “He only has a short time left, my Uncle has told me that much…anyway that’s enough of my current problems”
He didn’t think that there was any doubt that their child would be spoilt by Cait and Griff; he was smiling at the thought. He spoiled Esmae and Arthur too much than he should, but they were first children born to the family for years. “Not too much I hope” he laughed, “I want him or her to grow up knowing that people have to work for what they really want.” That was true, and he knew that very well.

Lucan didn’t know how Camila’s parents would react when they would finally tell them that she was with child. Obviously they would be just as concerned as he was, her mother especially. He could see his wife’s face changing in the mirror as he washed up. “Are you ok?” he turned to her after pulling on his tunic, “you look a little peaky?” Bring the back of his hand to her forehead she didn’t see hot, just a little flushed in the cheeks.
He hoped that she didn’t want them to go to her parents that afternoon, all he wanted to do was sleep, and the mention of his father almost made him want to throw himself out of the window. “That wouldn’t be necessary…” he told her, knowing full well that visiting his father would only cause a rift and he would be reminded constantly that Camila would let him down as a wife if she didn’t give him a son. “This is a time that I don’t exactly wish to see him, besides he’s growing weaker, and I know that it would be strenuous on all of us.” If there was one thing that Lucan didn’t want, then it was Camila stressing over nothing. “I’ll send a message to him this evening.”
Planting a small kiss on her forehead, he noted that vial that she was toying with a frowned. “What’s this?” he asked taking it out of her hands and turning it over in his own. Was it for the baby? Was she ill and hadn’t told him? He was worrying now.

Lucan had horrible thoughts of what had possibly happened, but he’d taken to leading Cait onto a different path of thinking. He wasn’t going to say his theory and upset her so instead he shook his head at her question. “No…but since our discussion I’ve had a feeling, but didn’t want to dwell on it – it would only upset you.” He said, “I don’t think of you badly or any differently regardless of what happened. If you or Griff need anything at all, and I mean anything, then just say and I’ll do what I can.” She needed to know that someone had her back.
He laughed lightly of the thought of taking them to training practice. “By the way everything is going at the moment; I doubt very much that it will happen…” He said this with some kind of sadness in his voice. He was going to have to give up his job sooner or later and it pained him. It had always been a large part of his life – his mother had been born in Camelot and if he had to leave it would be like losing her as well as his father. Lucan stood up and walked to the window so that Cait couldn’t see his pained expression. He didn’t want a sympathy vote and she was in a far worse state than him.
“Don’t worry Cait, you’ll find out sooner or later, but that’s enough on the matter – anyway you look like you need another drink” he turned on his heel and walked over to the table to pour them both another drink.

He’d invited Caitrin round, even if she did hate his guts he needed to know that she was ok after their imprisonment in the dungeons. He wasn’t just going to get back on track and not ask about her welfare. Lucan had seemed to have taken a leaf out of Rouland’s book and poured some wine for them both.
“I know we’ve had our differences, and that you don’t think very highly of me, but I invited you here just to check that you were ok.” He told her, “The dungeons aren’t exactly the homeliest of places…” Ribs ached vaguely as a reminder of how far Morgana almost went.
“Here…” he passed her the cup for her to take.
Settling himself in a chair, Lucan toyed with his wine for a while, the dark crimson reminding him of their ordeal. Everything seemed to be a reminder now, but he was working on expelling everything from his mind that was conjured up. If he could do that, he could do anything. He hadn’t seen Camila since the events that had happened. He knew she was alive and had written to her father about an important matter that had played on his mind, ever since he’d been down in that darn dungeon. Cam could have been used as bait for him, Morgana had known just how much she meant to him, and now he planned to make Camila herself see that.

He felt sorry for Cait, truly he did. If it had been before they’d made their peace with one another then he wouldn’t have felt any pity for her actions at all – but now? She was his dear sister in law who had made one mistake that could be the cost of all she had. It was a 50/50 balance and one that no one could determine until the child was born.
“Cait…” he said softly, “we all make mistakes, I’ve made loads and it always works out better in the end no matter how much hurt or happiness you have.” He hushed Arthur some more, smirking slightly at Cait’s comment. “Knowing me, my own children wouldn’t have a moment from my sight” he sighed.
Lucan wasn’t about to tell Cait how scared he was. Of everything. It wasn’t in his nature – for Lucan to feel a tiny bit of fear wasn’t unusual, but to feel it this amount? The last time he’d felt it as much as this was the night he’d met Camila. Had his father drummed the same sentence into Griff? “Not as much as he did with me – I think he thought I’d marry far sooner than anticipated, I can’t say I blame him for making up for lost time.” He shrugged.
It didn’t surprise him that Cait was interested in his plans should anything happen. He smiled lightly and tapped his nose. “All in good time Cait, but what I will say is that not only with Camila and the baby be taken care of, but you, Griff and the children shall also be too…you have my word on that.”

Lucan wasn’t surprised at how content his wife now seemed, now that he was back at home. He knew that she would have worried herself at every given moment. “Haven’t you even seen Cait or Griff?” he frowned. His brother was only nearby at the de Archer Estate; surely she would have spent time with them?
He couldn’t imagine his wife being bored. She was so energetic that even he couldn’t keep up with what she was doing. She was either out for a walk or overseeing things in the house. He just let her go about her own business – Camila was a woman who did as she pleased and had no one stand in her way. Lucan just kept himself to himself, working or shutting himself away in the private study where he’d write his uncle more than his father.
They headed inside and upstairs where Luc could finally take his chainmail off. “Have you heard from your parents?” he asked, pulling his tunic off and splashing some water from the nearby basin onto his face. Now that felt good. He replaced the tunic for a new one and rearranged his hair after putting it on. He looked like he’d been dragged through a hedge backwards. It was first time he’d looked into a mirror for some weeks and now he saw the extent. The dark circles under his eyes were enough to show for it, but he’d most certainly sleep well tonight.
