I think the episode was predominantly about Arthur's willingness to do whatever it took to save Guinevère from Morgana's powers; though I'd have loved to see the scene they for some reason chose not to show where Merlin revealed the truth to Arthur about Guinevère being under a spell of some sort or other!
On the plus, welcome back, Arthur!
Merlin; You are so very in line with my thoughts right now! The acting was amazing, kickass Merlin ALWAYS makes me do the happy dance; and I was so happy to see Mordred do something for once, rather than just sit in the background twiddling his thumbs!!!

The druid's eyes crinkled into confusion as Merlin spoke, denying the past, denying the truth. He had not, in truth, expected the warlock to be so unrepentant. No matter what Merlin had done, Mordred had always thought of the man as honourable. And now.... well. Perhaps the Knights had been right all along to cast Merlin out after the fall of their King.
Taking a slow breath, Mordred turned, a small light appearing in the middle of the room. "Merlin... come with me." He spoke, his voice heavy with sadness. He stepped towards the light, which flickered a little, before a creaking sound revealed the opening of a door. Beyond that door, Mordred knew, Merlin would find the answers to his questions. But whether or not the warlock would follow was another matter entirely. He was so distrusting of Mordred, so certain of his own part, that Mordred feared he would never accept the path he had laid for himself. He turned his head, to meet Merlin's eyes. "Please, Merlin. I promise you no harm will come to you."

The young Knight smiled at the Lady's advice, inclining his head. "You seem to know far more of these ways than I, my Lady, and I thank you for your advice; I will try to keep to it."
Mordred listened in interest as the Lady explained her connection to Arthur, nodding, with a slight smile. "It seems strange to think of the King as anything but the great King he is now," he admitted softly, glancing over at the blonde, before returning his gaze to Nora. "In all truthfulness, my Lady, it is something I am still getting used to." He paused. "I am grateful to his majesty for his kindness and am honoured by his decison to Knight me, but I do wonder if he has seen something within me that perhaps is not there..." he trailed off, shaking his head. "Forgive me, for I speak out of turn."

The druid held back a curse to the Gods as he was pulled from his hiding spot by the unknown traveller's guards, and brought before her. Bowing his head in respect, he hoped the gesture would prove worth hsi while, and that she would let him go, eventually. In a soft voice, Mordred spoke. "My Lady, please forgive me for startling you. I am a traveller, on my way to Camelot." he was not exactly being honest, but to speak Morgana's name so close to Camelot was most likely to ask for death, something that Mordred was less than keen to meet just yet.
After a moment, the druid boy slid one foot forward, into a kneel, hoping the gesture would be enough to suade the woman he meant no ill intentions. "I mean you no harm, Lady. I saw your guard and hid, for I know that strangers are not always welcome in these lands. I did not wish to cause distress.

Mordred moved to stand next to the warlock, his gaze full of sympathy and mourning. A gentle hand rested upon Merlin's shoulder, as the druid took in the measure of Merlin's confusion and desperation. With all his heart, the druid wished that what the warlock was asking were possible. But Merlin should know by now, that with history, there was no way to change things. Even magic could not change the past, no matter how one might want to try.
He stepped forward, looking into Merlin's eyes. "I understand your confusion, Merlin. I understand your pain. I wish, more than anything, that there were some way we could change what has passed here, and bring back the King... but you of all people should know that there is no way to tamper with the past. What is done is done."

I am so glad we finally got an explanation as to how the dragon got the way she did, and it makes me happy to know that it wasn't Morgana mistreating her! My mind is in a haze of confusement over the episode though; there seem to have been a few very random scenes in there that had no particular point, which isn't like the series at all!! I wonder, did they have a guest writer on there? That being said, Colin's acting was amazing!

The druid nodded, with a smile. "Chidhood is a gift we should all treasure; and yet none of us seem to until it is over. I can well understand your feelings," He tried to assure. With a grin, Mordred acknowledged the truth in her words. "I am glad; I think your children might not thank you to leave you with me, I fear I am not quite the best at handling youngsters."
He paused as she spoke of Arthur, his gaze curious and his mind wondering. How much information could he press her for? He still knew so little of the King; so much was myth, and more than that, secrecy.... yet Mordred longed for nothing more than to get to know the man who had honoured him so by first saving his life all those years ago, and then Knighting him. At her comment about Mordred's opionion, however, the smile faltered a little. "I hold prejudice against no man," he said honestly. "If that man or woman or child is honourable and kind to friend and stranger alike, then what should give me, a mere nobody, the right to judge them? My Lady, I feel that we are, all of us, judged by our actions, not our homelands."
"My Lady, I think you are teasing me," Mordred stated, but there was laughter in his words, and he smiled a little, to let her know that he was not serious, that she had not offended him somehow. "But yes, it is more than alright, I thank you." HE paused. "Would you mind if I asked you how long you have known the King?"

"It is the shadow of Camelot." Mordred's voice spoke quietly, his voice full of regret and sadness. "It has lurked in the shadows since the King was killed, Merlin. And now that you have returned, it will hang about you like a cloak hangs about a wise man." The druid's gaze was filled with nothing but sympathy as he watched Merlin, wondering whether the warlock would ever truly accept what he had done. It had taken Mordred long enough to believe that Merlin could be responsible for such a crime... but how could Merlin face his own fate?
He felt a shudder run through him at the sound of those words of magic being uttered, relieved - a little- when nothing seemed to happen. So... what he had heard was true. "After the King was set to rest, you vowed you would never use magic again." He stated quietly. "You said that you had betrayed your oath, betrayed Camelot and yourself. You wanted nothing to do with magic. Do you not remember, Merlin? You went to the Higher Powers and begged them to recend your powers. They warned you the action could not be undone... still you begged. It seems your prayer has come to light, after all."
The Knight stepped forward, pressing a kind hand to Merlin's shoulder. "Please Merlin. Come. Let us talk. Let me show you that my words are nothing but the truth."

I completely agree with you, Cait!!! The Gwen/Morgana thing is so similiar to the Morgana/Morgause thing, with Gwen taking Morgana's place during that whole plotline! LIke you say, the writers dont' bother to tell us why or how this has happened - except in having Elyan die - but they just assume we'll jump on the band wagon, so to speak! I feel sorry for Arthur - is this how it's going to be for him throughout the show? And what happens when - or if - he finds out about Guinevère? I can see the poor guy being devistated. (I felt sorry for that stablehand too!)
I will say, though, it's nice to see Gwen actually doing something this last episode, rather than just floating around... but I'm still not happy with what she's doing!
Sir Leon.... URGH. Like you say, Cait, it really did seem fake, and though I've said it before, to me it felt like they were just using Leon as a handy character who could tell Guinevère this crazy idea of her ruling if Arthur died (I really did not like how Leon wrote Arthur off so quickly!). Emrys was perfect!!!{/i]!.
YES to being annoyed at the lack of Mordred in this series!!! I think I said in other threads, but it seems to me that they are very much only using Mordred when they want him to make some sort of impact - it's very annoying to say the least!! And very odd, considering at the start of his being knighted, Arthur seemed very fond of the boy (even Guienvere remarked on it!), and Mordred is just being pushed aside... I totally agree that it feels like Morgana is running the show though!
And Merlin, completely agreeing with you!!! They have really bonded over the last years - the years that we've seen of them, and the ones we haven't! - you can tell by the way they interact with each other. They are like Morgana and Arthur were in season one and two, but a lot stronger! I'd say they were brothers in every sense of the word bar blood...

Mordred's eyes stayed upon the warlock as the other backed away, his own gaze serene, yet clear in its grief. A tiny flicker of compasson for Merlin - lasting no more than a second - and then it was gone. Mordred had learned that compassion was a fickle friend... and he would not be fooled a second time by Merlin, for it was clear now where the warlock's intentions lay.
"It has already happened," He spoke softly, his voice a heavy mixture of grief, tinged with still a little fear. "Do you not feel it, Merlin? Do you not feel the grief echoed in every wall of Camelot? Do you not see the tattered state of the Castle - of these very chambers? Do you not wonder why there is no light, no hope, no laughter?" The druid paused, taking a slow breath as he regarded Merlin. "I see why you would not wish to believe it. No one thought you would do such a thing, Merlin. We all strove to prove your innocence right up until the moment you confessed everything." He shook his head. "But they say that seeing is believing..." He paused, stepping forward a little, toward Merlin. "I can proove the truth to you Merlin... I can show you. If you let me."
The druid stepped forward, and pressed a gentle, compassionate hand to Merlin's shoulder, his eyes speaking of nothing but truth and kindness, though the fear still lingered. "Come, Merlin. I promise you, I mean you no harm. I never have."

I agree, he was far too casual, and it really irked me!!!! Like you say, it's almost as if the writers have forgotton their own characters, which really doesn't make sense! You may be right in that Leon was a means to an end in telling Gwen what they needed her to be told but even so... (did that sentence make sense?)
We saw a brief glimpse of how Arthur might react if it were Merlin in season 4 - but I've a feeling his reaction would be even stronger now, after everything that's happened!

SO happy I wasn't the only one!! With me it was the fact that he seemed so willing to admit that Arthur was on the brink of death. Considering how his character and Arthur are supposed to have grown up together, I would have thought he'd be among those telling Gwen not to give up hope rather than suggesting that she take the crown for herself!!
It was extrordinarily powerful!!! I have to wonder how the cast dealt with that scene when they saw it was coming up, and after it was filmed. Because... urgh... it was just amazing!!! Like you said, it does give us a sort of glimpse into how he would react if Arthur actually did die... which considering how close the two are, is not surprising! I fear Arthur would be almost the same if it were Merlin at death's door!

Yes! Exactly!!! Im very curious to now watch the next episode (LOL) to see what happens!!!! But then I am most weeks!
I agree - their bond is so strong now, there is no way that Arthur would think Merlin capable of anything evil or wrong; and even if Merlin did do something, like you say, I think Arthur would do everything in his power to clear his friend's name. They seem more like brothers than friends (which reminds me... was I the only one annoyed with Sir Leon??)
Hmm, I think you might be right on that one!! Knowing how desperate Morgana is for the throne, she might try it though, thinking she has more power with Gwen under her control, but I'm not sure how much power she has!
I agree, it really showed how Colin has matured with his character, and it brought a greater depth to Merlin. That last bit really did have me near tears!

Hmm, it's possible I suppose. Though it's nice to see Gwen being something other than the good little wife with little opinion (sorry, but she's been bugging me this past series!), I do not like the way her "evilness" was executed at all. It almost seems to me as though the writers are swapping her for Morgana - in season 3, they had Morgana trying consistantly to kill Arthur... and now they're using Gwen. Admittedly, if Arthur ever finds out, the betrayal will be huge... and I'm being mean, but I really want that to happen. I loved that Arthur cleared Merlin's name the minute he was well again though!!! And yes, I agree!!! I think Gwen'll be doing her best to get rid of Merlin; especially considering the look she was giving him at the end of that episode!!!! I wonder if she'd try to turn Arthur against him?
OMG, me too!! That poor guy!!! I liked how Merlin went to talk to him though...

I have no idea what confused me, Merlin!!! I just know that at the end of the episode, something didn't quite sit right with me, and I've no idea what...!!! I know it wasn't anything to do with the plot, or the actors, so I'm at a loss!
One of my favourite lines:
Merlin: I prefer Gwen's clothes Arthur: I'm going to try my hardest to forget you ever said that.....
